poor air quality. the south bay. we're looking at 101 and 880. we have good to moderate air, but as the day unfolds and more of that smoke works its way down to where we're breathing it's our east bay valleys and the santa clara valley that could have the poor air quality all of us under that spare the air umbrella. here's the way the day breaks down. in my 12-hour planner, mid to upper 50s, same at 7:00. near 60 at the coast. 70 to 80 around the bay and inland and mid 70s to 90 at 4:00 and back into the 69 to 81 degree range by 7:00. hazy sunshine. it's going to look pretty murky today. >> that being said, it is a spare the air day today as well. if you can carpool and use mass transit that is highly recommended. we are looking live at the bay bridge toll plaza right now. backup in the cash lanes has thinned out on either side of the toll plaza. this is the sweet spot of the morning where we don't have delays because the metering lights aren't on. we'll enjoy that form in

a rollover crash. eastbound state route 24, not blocking the main line but the off ramp is blocked. emergency crews at the scene waiting for the tow truck to arrive. next traffic update at 5:10. firefighters are struggling to make headway on the mendocino complex. the ranch and river fires combined have burned more than 292,000 acres as of this morning. >> containment remains the same as yesterday morning, 20% for the larger ranch fire and 78% for the river fire. cal fire says the complex fires won't be fully contained until september. at least 75 homes have been destroyed. one home belonged to a youth football coach from west sacramento. andy hamill says his parents' home sat in between the two fires. he and his parents evacuated safely, but now they will have to start from scratch. >> go look at manufactured homes, do you rebuild your house? where is the money going to come from? it's stressful for them. >> hamill says this isn't the

first time the family has dealt. he had helped the contractor build it back up. extended family members set up a gofundme to help the hamills. the mendocino complex fires are creating bad air quality around the area. >> there is a spare the air day. amy hollyfield is live with tips on how to stay safe. >> hi, jessica. if you have one of these today is the day to put it on. make sure you cover both your nose and your mouth or better yet, just stay inside. here's a look at why. the air quality is just not great right now in the bay area. it's especially affecting the east bay and north bay. experts are blaming smoke from the fires but also smog from all of our cars. it is a spare the air day. carpooling or public transportation is encouraged as we try to improve our air quality. you need to take steps to protect yourself, especially the

can do to mitigate what's happened. >> on sunday the president tweeted that the wildfires are, quote, made much worse by bad environmental laws and that water is foolishly being diverted into the pacific ocean. cal fire replied saying, there is no water shortage and that climate change is what is making these fires worse. >> we are sending out push alerts on major fire updates including a closer look at why some climatologists say they are becoming so devastating. get alerts downloading the abc 7 news app and enable push alerts. hundreds of children remain separated from their phafamiliet the border. >> congresswoman jackie speier invited men and women to share their experiences and reporter kate larson spoke to the group at the congresswoman's home. >> the children themselves describe it as this cage for the most vicious of animals in their

country, and the children are being housed there. >> reporter: bell linda hernandez is describing conversations she had with children seeking asylum at the border in texas two weeks ago. >> numerous, numerous human rights violations that we heard. >> reporter: she and a group of bay area volunteers helped central american refugee families transition to i.c.e. detention to life with a sponsor family while they wait for a court date. 572 children remain in u.s. custody, including 410 whose parents have been deported without them. >> they're coming to our country seeking asylum, which is not a crime, but they're treated like prisoners, criminals. >> reporter: lily went to texas with hernandez, but the first time she went to the border was with a group of women from san mateo county who accompanied jackie speier in june. >> congresswoman speier invited the group to share their experiences in mcallen. the hope is that information will improve the situation for families at the border. >> they will continue to be the

observers there because this administration has no compunction about violating the laws, ignoring the laws in this country. we can't let that happen. >> reporter: the group of bay area volunteers hopes to travel back to the border in november. kate larson, abc 7 news. the city of sunnyvale may put the brakes on a scheduled increase in its $15 an hour minimum wage so other cities can catch up. some council members want to maintain regional consistency, expressing concern that other cities may cheaper than sunnyvale. the council will decide next month to allow that wage increase to take effect. let's head up to the mendocino complex fires. the ranch fire to the north, the river fire to the south. in between you've got clear lake. one of the buffers between those two. good conditions this morning, at

least on the ranch fire. it's 59 degrees and 79% relative humidity. no winds. light wind to about 7 in the river fire. that's a change from the last couple of nights. it is warmer at 72 and the relative humidity is already dry at 39%. temperatures are going to flirt with 100 today, tomorrow and then mid 90s from friday all the way to tuesday. no break there, at least not from the heat. back here at home, wish we could send some of this up there. low to mid 50s around san francisco right now, with 53 downtown, same temperature in san leandro. we've got 59 in santa clara. saratoga 56. american canyon dress for 57 if you're heading out right now. a look from the exploratorium camera at pier 15. you can see the mist and drizzle hanging in the air. if you're going to exercise the air quality is fine now, but it's going to get worse as we head throughout the day. beaches, lighter breezes today and going to be on the bay, no need to worry about choppy conditions or breezy conditions. there is no finally small craft

advisory. we'll take a look at the heat coming up in the accuweather seven-day forecast and see if it lasts through the weekend. good morning, mike. we have had a handful of issues this morning, including a sig alert. if you're trying to get into or out of the point ray station, unfortunately state route 1 is closed south of sir francis drake and shoreline highway there. they're saying it should be less than an hour now. this is due to downed power lines. they are working on getting that cleared. we also had a fire due to this and you're seeing white on the maps here. that is our visibility layer. quick check of the south bay, not seeing visibility issues here and light volume at 101 and 880 even on the inbound side. next update at 5:20. the manhunt continues for the person who shot and killed a man on the bay bridge monday morning. we know the victim is 31-year-old daryl stinetter jr. of texas and leaves behind two

boys. his father tells abc 7 news his son was in san francisco working the music scene as a manager and promoter. the two other people hurt were stinetter's colleague and a cameraman. daryl's father said he learned about the shooting through sonoma and then called the medical examiner's office to see if it was true. >> he said yeah, i can tell you his height. gave me some stuff, you know, markings on his body. i knew right then it was my son. >> investigators say the shots came from a silver or gray sedan or small suv. have you ever heard of a pet store repossessing a dog? details behind a very bizarre story involving leasing an animal. there's a massive new creation to try to clean u great pacific garbage patch that's being put together in the bay area. take a look at this video serving as a lesson to anyone who plans on vacationing in tahoe. abc 7 the only place

the nevada lab took this video monday night and that's not what we mean by the golden state. that's pretty, but nasty. that smoke is going to hang around. unfortunately the fire danger is going to increase starting at 2:00 tomorrow through at least 11:00 saturday evening. it does include mendocino county, also the carr fire. just about the entire northern half of the central valley. the fire danger is going to be increasing. we'll talk more about that and the heat coming our way in the accuweather seven-day forecast. this dog is now being treated after he was found burned from the mendocino complex wildfireses. the injured dog walked up to a neighbor who made a bed for the canine and the neighbor cared for the dog even though he watched his own house burn to the ground earlier in the day. a volunteer with the norcal livestock evacuation filmed the video and brought back medical supplies and food for the dog. the man who lost his house didn't want anything. there are 16,000 fire

personnel fighting wildfires across california. the alameda fire department paid tribute on facebook yesterday. it shows a cal strike team made up of alameda county, hayward and freemont firefighters and we thank them for their work. >> i read there are more firefighters working these fires in california than we've ever seen in the state. it's astounding. it's still not enough. >> it has been a historic wildfire season already and so early still. a lot of work still to be done. >> that's true. an advocacy group warning parents your child's crayons may have dangerous chemicals. a report cites the public research group that says playschool brand crayons tested positive for asbestos. if kids inhale or eat them, the group says they can lead to serious problems like lung cancer. hasbro is playschool's parent's

company and says an investigation is under way. a contraption assembled in the bay area is going to try to clean up the gray pacific garbage patch. it came from a 23-year-old dutch theacleanup pjects consists of about2,000 feet of pipes that float on the water and act like a strainer. there's netting below that's supposed to help corral all that trash. it is scheduled to sail next month. into today's "gma" first look, a family on new york's long island is finding out the hard way they don't own their beloved golden retriever and their pet could be repossessed. >> in this morning's "gma" first look some pet stores and breeders are offering an option in states like new york that allow you to take your pet home right away with a lease, and that's what danielle did when she got her golden retriever max at the pet store. this is a document she signed which states the terms of the lease. she acknowledges she didn't read

sunday and we'll hold that for monday and tuesday. checking out the roads this morning a handful of incidents. it was a rollover crash on eastbound state route 24 at alcalanes road. the transition and off ramp blocked. the transition lanes there are now back open. i believe that off ramp is partially blocked. working on getting that vehicle in the correct position and still no word on the driver. this was reported as an abandoned vehicle. the driver left somewhere. hopefully everybody is okay. richmond side of the richmond-san rafael bridge starting to fill in slowly but light volumes on westbound 580. a spare the air day today. if you can use it that's recommended or carpool this morning. 45 bart trains in service. normal service should be a calm day on the water if you're taking san francisco bay ferry. all around the bay people got together to meet other members of their community and take part in national night out.

abc 7 news was in oakland where neighbors had a street party on madison street with a sole purpose of making connections. >> communities are better when everyone knows each other. >> with all changes, with changes in diversity in community, it's important to meet your neighbors, to say hi, shop local with them. >> somhing to make us learn that we can trust east other. and get along. have fun as well. >> in oakland, police officers were there too and made the rounds at some events where they did a lot of listening, hoping to build bridges with the community. abc 7 news was in san jose where hundreds enjoyed national night out at the farm park. the neighborhood's police captain believes it can build trust between citizens and officer. >> our job is to be one with the community and help them solve crimes, help them help themselves in their neighborhood. getting neighbors to meet

neighbors they never met before. >> it was a lot of fun. the young kids got to enjoy getting their faces painted. older kids were thrilled terg a car300 feet off a road in marin county. another driver saw what happened and called for help. the other driver pointed rescuers to the wrecked car dangling in a tree in deep foliage. firefighters worked for an hour to free that man yesterday. rescuers then carried him to alpine dam where a waiting chp chopper rushed him to a trauma center. he has major, but nonlife-threatening injuries. history at a hollywood premier, debut of a movie where all the lead roles are played by asian actors. the romantic comedy "crazy rich asians" the first major studio movie since "the joy luck club" 25 years ago to feature a predominantly asian cast in a contemporary story line. this is just the start of a

scene. an update coming up in ten minutes. >> thank you. cal fire says it will be another three and a half weeks before firefighters have the mendocino complex wildfires under control. >> full containment of the ranch and river fires won't happen until september 1st at the earliest. the ranch fire is down from 30% on monday. the smaller river fire is 78% contained. evacuated neighbors that are coming home say the firefighters have been doing an incredible job. >> at points, 100 feet high back there like an oven coming towards us. >> the back is burnt and the sides over here, but they stuck it out and saved our park. >> the combined fires have grown to 292,000 acres. to give you perspective on their size take a look here at this map. the mendocino complex fires would cover most of the bay area. >> we are getting new video of a

firenado from the holy fire in southern california. this is similar to what we saw in redding. crews are making slow progress against this fire. it's burned 3300 acres of land. the holy fire broke out monday afternoon near the orange and riverside county line and exploded out of control. it has stretched fire fighting resources to the limit. >> we have an order for 600 firefighters and we're at 300 right now. we are so drawn down in the state our resources will be coming from further and further. ordinarily if this was the only fire we would have 600 people here yesterday. >> at least one cabin has gone up in flames. several campgrounds in the area are evacuated. no homes are threatened in lake elsinore, the closest city to the fire. stay with "abc 7 mornings" as we continue tracking these wildfires. you can find the most up to date fire maps on our website, abc7news.com.

on to developing news on the persistent long lines at the dmv and this morning state lawmakers continue to push for an audit of the agency. >> amanda del castillo is live for us in san amanda? obviously, we're having problems there with our video. as reggie stayed we're having difficulty there with amanda. on to this story, happening today, jury deliberations set to begin in the case against weed killer manufacturer monsanto. closing arguments wrapped up in the san francisco superior courtroom yesterday. 37-year-old dwyane lee johnson filed the civil suit against the

pesticide manufacturer. he worked for a school district as the pest manager. a large part of his job was spraying roundup weed killer. johnson's attorneys say after two and a half years of spraying the pesticide 30 times a year he he was diagnosed with nonhodgkins lymphoma. >> i want monsanto to be punished for what they done and if it requires one big case to change their conduct to put a warning on the label, then absolutely. >> the message from that evidence is clear and it's that this cancer was not caused by ranger pro. >> the trial has been precedent setting as it is the first of thousands of similar lawsuits. plaintiffs seeking more than $39 million in compensatory damages and $373 million in punitive damages. family and friends say night releases from santa rita jail led to the death of a young

woman. a state senator is considering introducing a measure to stop the practice. 28-year-old jessica st. louis walked out at 1:25 a.m. saturday, july 28th. her body was found around 5:30 at the dublin bart station, dead from what officials say appears to be a drug overdose. >> we are demanding that this practice of releasing people in the middle of the night with no support, no resources, with no transportation, is a harmful practice. >> if we shut down release operations for continuous periods of time, the -- we would be holding people over incarceration times and we would get sued. >> the sheriff's office says st. louis's death was an isolated case. the man wanted for a double stabbing at the macarthur bart station is in jail. u.s. marshals took solomon espinosa into custody yesterday. he was wanted in connection with an attack on a richmond bart train on friday. one of the victims cut on the arm and the other on the face.

you are never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. let's take a look at what's going on. we'll start right there in walnut creek creek. one of the areas that could have some poor air quality later today. i just checked the latest readings and everybody is good to moderate so far, so if you want to get out and exercise now is one of the better times to do it. santa clara valley, you could have poor air quality today. our other big story of the day, the fire concerns are heightened once again around the mendocino complex fire, the carr fire, pretty much the northern half of the central valley and it starts tomorrow at 2:00 in the afternoon and goes until saturday at 11:00 in the evening. fire weather watch means conditions could be conducive for rapidly spreading fires. this will probably be upgraded to a red flag warning tomorrow. 52 at daly city to about 58 in menlo park. most of us around 53 to 55 on

the peninsula. a lot of mid to upper 50s throughout. 60 in concord and 70 in the hills in los gatos. the san mateo bridge, let's talk about driving today, a few foggy spots and mist out there the closer to the coast and around petaluma towards santa rosa. ferry ride, nice today, even though it won't look nice, it will feel better as there's no small craft advisory. the fact that we don't have a se breeze is one of the reasons we have the spare the air and some of the smoke that was hovering over us all day yesterday is going to filter to our neighborhood. breathe easy today and take mass transit. >> or carpool. either one is going to help things out quite a bit this morning. for folks who are just about to head out and hit the roads we had a sig alert in point ray station area. a full closure of state route 1 south of sir francis drake boulevard and shoreline highway. a little better news. they did cancel the sig alert and are working on getting this cleared. it was downed tree, took down power lines. we had a fire due to this as well.

all of tesla's stock at $420 per share. the buyout would cost nearly $72 billion. drug store giant cvs planning to offer a nationwide service sort of like a virtual doctor to treat easy to dying know sicknesses. the app will cost $59 a month and provide you with advice concerning flus, colds, and the like. because cvs is close to acquiring health insurance firm aetna the company says insurance coverage on the app will be available in the coming months. a controversial radio show host and conspiracy theorist will not be suspended from twitter. now twitter's ceo jack dorsey is explaining why and says alex jones who believes the sandy hook massacre was a hoax, wasn't suspended because he has not violated twitter's policy. dorsey says twitter will hold jones to the same standard it
