worse. for us we're waking up mid to upper 50s, up to the north bay, hazy sunshine and just slightly warmer inland today than it was yesterday. here's alexis. >> good morning, mike. do want to head back to the south bay. i have a little more clarity on the backup for northbound 101. we have two crashes close to each other. the first one northbound 101 at story road. that has been there for about 45 minutes. two vehicles involved. sounds minor but that's blocking the left lane. beyond that at mckey road another crash and another lane blocked there. you are stop and go for about four or five miles. surface streets may be a better bet until they can get those cleared. we have a lot of haze already in walnut creek and southbound 680 starting to fill in around treat boulevard. looks like a first responder there. i will keep an eye on that. next traffic update at 6:10. >> thank you. firefighters are struggling to make headway on the mendocino complex. the ranch and river fires combined have burned morthan

292,000 acres as of this morning. >> containment the same as yesterday, 20% for the ranch fire, 78% for the river fire. cal fire says the complex fires won't be fully contained until september. 75 homes have been destroyed. one belonged to a youth football coach. andy hamill says his parents' home sat in between the two fires. he and his parents evacuated safely, but now they will have to start from scratch. >> go look at manufactured homes, do you rebuild your house? where is the money going to come from? it's stressful for them. >> hamill says this isn't the first time the family has dealt with this. the same house burned down 25 years ago. back then he helped the contractor build it again. extended family members set up a gofundme to help the hamills. the mendocino complex fires are creating bad air quality around the area. >> there is a spare the y.

amy hollyfield is live in walnut creek with tips on how to stay safe. >> reporter: hi, jessica. i am here to give everyone permission to hit the snooze button and skip the outdoor workout this morning. take a look at the smoke that has moved into the bay area and lingering here, giving us bad air quality, really impacting the east and north bay areas the most. the advice is to stay inside. put your air conditioning on recycle. if you have to be outside, do it right now early in the morning. today you have permission to take it easy. >> the idea is you want to cover your nose and mouth completely with this mask as you're breathing. it's not the same as staying indoors and avoiding exposure, but you will see these masks especially in eire areas. an effect on e also says he's

was abducted by someone she knows. a reward fund set up for her safe return has raised more than $300,000. this morning, hundreds of children remain separated from their families at the border. only on abc 7 news, bay area volunteers who recently traveled to mcallen, texas, are sharing their experiences. some of these volunteers joined congresswoman jackie speier on a trip in june and then made a second trip on their own in july. last night they gathered at the congresswoman's home to talk about their experiences. usf professor hernandez helped families transition from i.c.e. detention to life with the sponsor family. >> children themselves describe it as this cage for the most vicious of animals in their country, and the children are being housed there. they are separated from their parents. >> the fact that they have made two trips, while it's remarkable, is not enough. >> volunteers hope to travel back to the border in november.

lighter breezes on our beaches. playing on the bay no small craft advisory today. we'll take a look at the heat wave coming up in the accuweather seven-day forecast. good morning. i want to head out to where we did have a sig alert about an hour ago. point ray station area, some trees took out some power lines this morning. we had a fire there. they're working on cleaning it up. it is no longer a sig alert because they have one direction back open and alternating lanes are getting by. near sir francis drake boulevard, one-way traffic control in effect. a lot of fog this morning as mike mentioned, although we are looking okay in san rafael. we have the dense fog advisory once you make it down to golden gate bridge. a crash in concord on highway 4 slowing you down. thank you. new at 6:00 a.m., businesses selling weed in san francisco may soon be required to hire disadvantaged workers. it's through a program called city grow. city grow would train the workers for jobs in the cannabis industry.

"abc 7 mornings." >> all news. >> the manhunt continues for the person who shot and killed a man on the bay bridge monday morning. we know the victim is 31-year-old daryl stinetter, jr., of texas. he leaves behind two boys, one is a newborn. his father tells "abc 7 mornings" that his son was in san francisco working the music scene as a manager and promoter. the two other people hurt were stinetter's colleague and a cameraman. daryl's father learned about the shooting through social media and called the medical examiner's office to see if it was true. >> he said yeah, i can tell you his height. gave me markings on his body. i knew that was my son. >> investigators say the shots came from a silver or gray sedan or small suv. an advocacy group warning parents your child's crayons may

have dangerous chemicals. >> a report cites a public research interest group and says playschool brand crayons tested positive for asbestos. the group wants retailers to pull the crayons from schools and on-line shops. if kids inhale or eat them that could lead to problems like lung cancer. hasbro is playschool's parent company and it says an investigation is under way. never heard of this until this morning but a new york family is finding out the hard way they don't actually own their dog. they're leasing it. with pure bred and designer dogs fetching thousands of dollars, some pet stores and breeders are offering a lease option like what you might do with a car. instead of paying $1200 up front for her dog, a new york woman financing the dog. she paid $145 a month for two years, but now she's balking at paying the lender the final payment of $338. if she doesn't pay, her dog

would have to be returned at the end of the lease, just like a car. >> they have their money, so there's no reason to take my dog. max is our family. i don't want him going anywhere. >> the pet store called shake a paw tells abc news they plan to make the final payment to the leasing company so the woman can keep her dog. the federal trade commission issued a warning spelling out what is required of sellers using pet leases. several states have banned them including california. might be a good time to say the spca and other rescues would love to see you adopt one of their dogs and you don't need to lease it. >> absolutely. fun fact, bears like to eat food. another fun fact, they will find food even if you think it's safe in your car. check out this surveillance video. a bear smells food from the car, stands up, opens the door. the bear digs around a little bit before climbing out with a bag of food in its mouth. there it goes.

visibility has improved a little bit. three miles at half moon bay. that's about it. you may drive into the clouds as you hit our higher elevations. watch out there. may be mist in there enough that it coats the windshield. other than that, the commute this morning, most of us look like this. in san rafael where it's not foggy, lighter breeze today. thankfully during this potential record-setting fire season, we've had the sea breeze. it's kept the smoke above us or away from us. that's not going to be the case today as the lighter breeze will allow some of the smoke to work down to the ground. low clouds, fog and mist tonight and cooler as we head through the weekend. mid 90s in morgan hill and gilroy. a little warmer at the coast today even though the clouds hang around, low to mid 60s. san francisco upper 60s. north bay mid to upper 80s. near the fires 100 again. calm weather along the shoreline, mid to upper 70s.

still running the air conditioner. hottest tomorrow, the heat will hold on away from the coast friday and saturday and all of us back to average sunday, monday, tuesday. have a good one. good morning, mike. we have had several crashes this morning. i want to take you to highway 4 now if you're trying to get into the concord area. we have delays but things are improving. westbound 4 near port chicago highway. three vehicle collision. two sedans and a semi were involved in a crash blocking the right lane, but chp arrived and they were able to push that off to the shoulder. heavy back into the pittsburgh area, seven miles an hour and 16 miles an hour approaching the scene. hopefully that will start to loosen in a little bit. bay bridge camera, traffic coming into san francisco, mike mentioned this, i personally had to flip my wipers on when i came in this morning. we have mist and drizzle out there along with lower visibility. quick check of drive times, westbound tracy to be castro valley, 1 hour and 5 minutes.

8th. >> here is meteorologist mike nicco. >> hi, guys. little cloudy this morning. the gray covering all of our neighborhoods on live doppler 7. watch out for fog around petaluma and santa rosa. i have picked out the roof camera because look at the flags on the ferry building. they're not moving. that is not good because the sea breeze has been keeping us in clean air while most of the state has been suffering from the smoke. without that sea breeze, spare the air today. we're going to have poor air quality. heading out right now, temperatures in the mid to upper 50s, stay in the 50s at the coast except for around 2:00, low to mid 60s. mid 70s around the bay. 90s inland. fire dangers are increasing across the straigh across the state. >> i want to head to the south bay where we had a couple trouble spots. two separate crashes close to each other. northbound 101 the first one at story road, and the other one at mckey road. did get confirmation from chp both are off on the shoulder. that backup is really starting

to unwind. a check of the bay bridge toll plaza metering lights for almost an 5:29 the official time today. as mike mentioned it is a spare the air day. if you can carpool or use mass transit that is highly recommended. next traffic update coming up at 6:40. cal fire says it will be another three and a half weeks before firefighters have the mendocino complex wildfires under control. >> full containment of the ranch and river fires won't happen until september 1st at the earliest. the larger ranch fire is 20% contained. that is down from 30% on monday. and the smaller river fire is 78% contained. evacuated neighbors say firefighters are doing an incredible job. >> at points 100 feet high. >> the combined fires have grown to 292,000 acres. to give you perspective on their

size take a look here at this map. the mendocino complex fires would cover a large portion of the bay area. >> new video of a firenado of the holy fire in southern california. this is similar to what we saw in redding. crews are making slow progress against this fire. >> it's burned 3300 acres of land in the cleveland national forest and 5% contained this morning. this is a live picture of what it looks like. lake elsinore, the closest city to where this fire is burning, it's burning on the edge of the orange county and riverside county line and exploded out of control. as you know i have some folks that live there in the area. it's very -- there are homes there in that area, but where it's burning right now it's further from the populated areas of orange county so that's a little bit of good news and relief. very popular hiking trails in that area. really kind of sad to see all this wildlife there going up in flames.

it is really stretching fire fighting resources to the brink, to the limit. >> we have an order for 600 total personnel firefighters. we're at 300 right now. we are so drawn down in the state our resources will be coming from further and further. >> as we saw the man talking you can see the campground behind him. there has been one cabin gone up in flames already. there are several hiking trails in the area. several campgrounds have been evacuated. no homes are threatened in lake elsinore. that is the closest city to the fire. several campgrounds have been evacuated and no homes threatened in the nearby orange county area or riverside so that is a bit of relief for some of the residents in that area. >> we will watch it and the other fires burning across the state. stay with abc 7 news for the most up to date wildfire maps, go to our website abc7news.com. now on to developing news on

the persistent long lines at the dmv. this morning state lawmakers are continuing to push for an audit of the agency. >> abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo is live for us in san jose. amanda? >> reporter: reggie, jessica, if you haven't had had to deal with wait times chances are you've heard about them. some people have waited up to eight hours for service at the dmv. we know that agency blames the new need for real i.d. cards, which require an in person visit. however lawmakers want to know why arrangements weren't made to deal with the expected visitor traffic prior to that federal mandate. assemblyman patterson is presenting an audit request at 9:00 a.m., demanding accountability for what he says is a deeply mismanaged agency. we visited the san jose driver licensing processing center where the agency introduced another option to reduce wait times. it's an automated kiosk to help customers check in. >> i don't see many people using them. i think because many people don't know how to use computers

or something, but it didn't seem to help. >> reporter: the agency's director hopes the kiosks, more employees and longer hours and text notifications will bring down wait times. the dmv expects better service times in mid september, but for now we wait. live in san jose, amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. >> thank you. happening today, jury deliberations are set to begin in the case against weed killer manufacturer monsanto. closing arguments wrapped up in the san francisco superior courtroom yesterday. that's the video you're seeing here. 37-year-old dwyane lee johnson filed the civil suit against the pesticide manufacturer. he worked for a school district as the integrative pest manager. a large part of his job spraying roundup weed killer. his attorneys say after two and a half years of spraying the pesticide 30 times a year, he was diagnosed with nonhodgkins

the middle of the night with no support, no resources, with no transportation, is a harmful practice. >> if we shut down release operations for continuous periods of time, the -- we would be holding people over incarceration times and we would get sued. >> the sheriff's office says st. louis's death was an isolated case. the man wanted for a double stabbing at the macarthur bart station is in jail. u.s. marshals took solomon espinosa into custody yesterday. he was wanted in connection with an attack on a richmond bart train on friday. one of the victims cut on the arm and the other on the face. voters around the country wept to the polls tuesday for races that could offer us a glimpse of what to expect in november's midterm elections. in ohio's 12th congressional district, republican troy balderson is ahead of democrat danny o'connor by 1,754 votes with 100% of precincts reporting. but with provisional ballots yet

apart from merging. i think that's a little closer than it has been, but that is wow, didn't notice that before. let's talk about conditions. it's very calm over the ranch fire and temperature about 58. 82% relative humidity. winds are picking up a lit bill, coming out of the northwest at 10 miles per hour. notice 73 degrees in the rh, 32%. at about 2800 feet. here's the sad story and it's going to put people on edge once again, as fire conditions are going to increase not only across that area, but also near the carr fire and pretty much the entire northern part of the central valley. a fire weather watch that means conditions could be favorable for fast-spreading fires starting at 2:00 tomorrow afternoon through 11:00 saturday evening. no break there. find out about what's going on on the roads. mike, a spare thr day too. poor air quality, if you can carpool or use mass transit that is definitely recommended.

want to head up to the point ray station area where we had a sig alert earlier this morning. state route 1 was fully closed just south of sir francis drake boulevard, due to downed trees and took out power lines as well. they have the roadway partially reopened. the sig alert has been canceled. they're doing one withway traffic control and still waiting for a tree crew to do the removal there. not fully clear but at least able to get through likely with a bit of a delay that situation. drive times improve here. westbound 580, tracy to dublin, 51 minutes. we were in the red under an hour and that has slipped into the yellow. not good news for westbound 4. antioch to concord, earlier crash before port chicago highway is gone. just hearing about a now crash near railroad. in the red at 54 minutes. more on that shortly. southbound 101, san rafael to san francisco fog along the route but still in the green at 16 minutes. you have the mission, sonoma, and now the east cut. how san francisco's new transbay

fire weather watch. the mendocino complex fire. you can see all around that the heightened fire conditions that start tomorrow through saturday. our biggest concern is the mountains north of l.a. thankfully sparsely populated by high fire danger through about the evening hours, about 10:00. here we have poor air quality knocking on our door. discovery bay in tracy, and then spreads all the way through the san joaquin valley. that's going to continue for another couple weeks. here's a warning avoid spending too much time outdoors. the mendocino complex fires are creating bad air all over the bay area. >> spare the air today and abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live in walnut creek with tips on how to stay safe. amy? >> reporter: hi, jessica. if you have one of these today is the day you want to put it on and cover both the nose and mouth or better yet, stay inside today if you can. here is a look at why. we just got some bad air quality right now.

amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> i guess that's the only upside, amy. thank you. we know north beach, soma and the mission in san francisco, but where and what is east cut? well, that is the new name for an area covering rincon hill, part of south beach and 30 blocks surrounding the transbay terminal. they've been announcing this about a year now, but it's kind of now getting settled into the language. banners proclaim the east cut pays homage to history mentioning the gold rush and old coffee manufacturers in the neighborhood. a community benefit district made up of 4500 property owners, businesses and residents came up with the name. >> a historic reference to the second street cut, which was a leveling of the highest point to allow goods and services to move easier to and from the water. >> on its website the east cut is described as one of san francisco's most forward thinking and hospitable neighborhoods. if you live or work in san francisco, you have a new
