first we want to get to those unrelenting wildfires out west. take a look at this firenado from the holy fire in california. there are at least 18 major fires burning this morning and firefighters all the way from new zealand have flown in to help. >> all around the globe. here's what we know right now. more than 600,000 acres have been destroyed by the fire so far this year. more than 2,000 structures destroyed and at least nine people killed. abc's will carr is on the scene for us there with the latest. good morning, will. >> reporter: good morning, robin. these crews are about to join the 14,000 firefighters on the front lines here in california. there's been an ominous glow on the skyline throughout the course of the night. with so many fires raging, resources are stretched thin. fast-moving wildfires raging and burning out of control overnight. >> it just burns really hot and fast. >> reporter: the mendocino complex fire now nearly the size of los angeles, 450 square miles burning for a 12th day. the fires scorching terrain

turning land into a hellscape. >> mother nature is undefeated. >> reporter: over 11,000 structures threatened. more than six dozen homes destroyed. you can see the stones on the wall of this house charred. then you can see -- check this out. this is pieces of the roof, now just rubble. 17 wildfires burning across the golden state. over 600,000 acres and more than 2,000 homes and structures destroyed. >> it's devastating. >> reporter: the holy fire now burning for a third day. only 5% contained threatening communities nearby. >> there's 10,000 people that are evacuated. >> reporter: this firenado captured churning through the mountains overnight. firefighters on the front lines stretched thin. many working 24-hour shifts. check out this time-lapsed video. plumes of smoke and ash exploding into the sky. and we have seen these fires turn fatal. at least nine people have died here in california and it seems like we say this week after week but this is still a young fire

season. the worst fire last year started burning in december. michael. >> all right, thank you so much, will. i'm sure we can't wait for the season to get over with. those massive flames, they're being fueled by triple-digit temperatures and we're seeing heat like that here on the east coast. it feels like 100 degrees. let's go to ginger to find out is there any relief on the way, ginger? >> there is some relief for some of us, and i'll get to that. really this ridge in the west is so strong, michael. that's the one we're watching. seattle, for example, had their eighth 90-plus degree day and they usually get three on average. today they'll go for nine, tomorrow potentially ten and that's only happened twice in their recent history. portland and salem and the excessive heat warning all the way to the desert southwest, it's not just the heat but it's the wind that's going to kick up today. gusts to 35 miles per hour. the relative humidity as low as 5%. this is a longstanding problem,

that drought years ago caused that fuel and that dry fuel is really expanding these fires quickly, george. >> ginger, thanks very much. we move to politics. lots of results coming in overnight from high stakes primaries in several states. the big prize a house seat in ohio so close the official result has not been called. but president trump and the republicans are claiming victory. let's bring in our chief white house correspondent jon karl. jon, the gop may squeak out a win in ohio, but the fact that it's this close, a real warning sign for republicans come november. >> reporter: it sure is, george, and the republican candidate in ohio will probably eke out a narrow victory but the closeness of this race in such a solidly republican district is a signal of the big problems ahead for republicans. with a lead of less than a single percentage point, troy balderson is declaring victory. >> i'd like to thank president trump. >> reporter: president trump is also declaring victory and claiming credit but with a razor thin lead and provisional ballots yet to be counted, a

recount is still a possibility. democrat danny o'connor isn't conceding, and whoever wins, the two will have a rematch in november. >> we are in a tie ball game. we're not stopping now. tomorrow we rest, and then we keep fighting through to november. >> reporter: this race should have been an easy republican victory. the district is about as solidly republican as they come. president trump won there by 11 points in 2016, and in the last house race, the republican incumbent won by more than 35 points. in fact, a democrat has won here only once since the 1930s. republicans dumped millions of dollars into the race and president trump came to ohio over the weekend to give republican balderson a boost. after my speech saturday night, the president tweeted, there was a big turn for the better. now troy wins a great victory during a very tough time of year for voting. during that speech, the

president predicted that widely expected democratic victories in november won't materialize. >> so, why would that be a blue wave? i think it could be a red wave. i tell you what, really, i think it should be a red wave. >> reporter: the unexpectedly close race in ohio is just the latest sign of trouble for republicans. democrat conor lamb winning a special election earlier this year in a solidly republican pennsylvania district, and democrat doug jones winning the senate seat last year in a solidly republican alabama. in another hotly contested race, there's still no victory in the kansas republican primary for governor. president trump made a late endorsement of controversial candidate kris kobach, a hard right, staunchly anti-immigration candidate who chaired president trump's disbanded commission on voter fraud. many republicans think he is just too conservative to win the general election. he is a fantastic guy who loves his state and our country, trump tweeted monday.

he will be a great governor and has my full and total endorsement. that twitter boost was not enough to easily push kobach over the line. with more votes to count he is neck and neck with his opponent, the sitting republican governor of kansas, jeff colyer. the president hopes to blunt any democratic enthusiasm by campaigning nonstop in the fall. but democrats pointing to the president's unpopularity in many of the competitive districts in this election cycle, and they say they would like to see the president out there as much as possible. george. >> both sides looking to that. jon, thanks so much. we move to a day of testimony in the trial of president trump's campaign chair, paul manafort. the prosecution's star witness, manafort's long-time close friend and colleague, rick gates, was pummelled by the defense under cross-examination and will be back on the stand today and abc's david wright is with the president in bedminster, new jersey with the details. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, george. it was a grueling day on the stand for rick gates.

he is the government's star witness in this case but the defense did its best to pummel his credibility. in his second day on the witness stand rick gates testified that he helped his former boss, paul manafort, hide millions of dollars from the irs in offshore accounts and that months after manafort left the trump campaign, he reached out to gates who stayed on seeking an administration job for steven kalk that allegedly loaned manafort millions based on false information. the defense tried to paint gates as an unreliable witness who would say anything for a lighter sentence after pleading guilty to lying to the feds. the defense asks, after all the lies you've told, do you expect this jury to believe you? gates responded, i do. adding, i'm here to tell the truth, i'm here to take responsibility. under cross-examination gates admitted to an affair with a mistress in london using money

embezzled from manafort and the defense asked if there's another rick gates, a secret rick gates in london. gates said his wife was aware of the affair. manafort who was gates' boss and mentor for years has pled not guilty to all charges including bank fraud and lying to the irs, alleged financial crimes unrelated to manafort's work for the trump campaign. gates is expected back on the witness stand today for another few hours of cross-examination. after that the government will get a chance to redirect. the prosecution could rest its case as early as this week. george. >> david wright, thanks very much. robin. george, now to the manhunt under way in new jersey for a gunman who ambushed two police officers in their car overnight. both officers taken to the hospital. linsey davis is in camden, new jersey, with the latest. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning, robin. it happened just a few blocks away from here around 8:30 last night. police say that the suspect

approached the officers and then opened fire before fleeing the scene possibly in a white van. both of the detectives were then brought here to cooper hospital for treatment. overnight, two new jersey police officers ambushed. >> all units pto broadway and mount vernon. there's a cop show the. >> reporter: their attacker is now on the loose. an urgent manhunt is under way this morning for the man who opened fire on those two detectives waiting in their car at a red light. >> a male walked up and began opening fire. we have anywhere between 10 and 25 rounds that were fired at the officers. >> reporter: one detective was shot twice in the arm. the other shot in the hand. both are expected to recover. officials say the detectives who were in plain clothes were targeted, ironically on national night out, a night aimed at improving relations between police and their communities. >> unfortunately, on a night when we're supposed to be celebrating safety two of our detectives were engaged as victims. >> reporter: but tensions are at an all-time high as shootings

targeting officers are on a four-year rise. communities frustrated by a string of unarmed black men and teens killed by police but these two camden detectives are expected to survive that surprise attack. >> we have a rapidly unfolding investigation to identify and to apprehend the perpetrators that were responsible. >> reporter: according to police, one of the officers did manage to fire back, but it's still unclear if the suspect was hit. we're told both the male and female detectives sustained nonlife-threatening injuries, michael. >> thank you so much, linsey. now to multiple shark scares across the east coast. a young girl recovering from an attack in north carolina and take a look at this scary scene off cape cod. see right there. a great white leaping out of the water and abc's victor oquendo has the latest. >> reporter: good morning, michael. shark attacks happen more often in the summer because more people are coming to the beach, but scientists say there's another factor at play here and that's earth's rising

temperatures and these sharks are searching for cooler waters. >> this is 911. >> hi, i'm on bald head island access 42 and a girl just got bit by a shark. >> a girl just got what? i'm soy. >> bit by a shark. >> reporter: the 911 calls came in one after another, a young girl bitten by a shark on a north carolina beach. >> you could see she was bleeding pretty badly and then a lot of people came and helped her. >> reporter: a surf instructor heard the girl's screams from the shallow waters off a sandbar when a shark bit her right leg. her dad quickly carried her to safety. thankfully she'll be okay. we've seen an uptick in shark attacks over the last ten years and scientists say climate change could be helping drive the surge. >> as ocean temperatures keep rising and sharks distribute themselves to higher and higher latitudes, you'll get encounters at places where you seldom had them before. >> reporter: in cape cod, surfers scrambling to the shore after witnesses say a shark maneuvered through a group of

people while hunting a seal seen bloodied and floating moments later. nobody was hurt. just north of that same beach, this close encounter showing a large great white shark just feet away from an unsuspecting paddleboarder who had no idea the predator was so close. some beaches not taking any chances closed for swimming because of great white sightings. >> whoa. >> reporter: like this one, a shark leaping towards a researcher in cape cod just this week. that researcher getting a little more than he bargained for when he tried to tag that shark. there is something else to watch out for. the water up north is often murkier than we have in florida making sharks harder to spot creating potentially dangerous situations. robin. >> all to keep in mind. thank you. now to the backlash that is brewing over a wnba team forced to forfeit after they decided not to play a game due to health and safety concerns. the las vegas aces experiencing flight troubles spending 25

hours traveling and then they get to the game. it's set to tip off four hours later. they decided not to play. abc's ryan smith is here with the story. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the aces were dealt two losses tuesday on the court to atlanta last night and again with the wnba's forfeit ruling. the first in its 22-year history. while the league cited difficulties in rescheduling the game, the aces players are standing by their decision to sit down. >> total domination. >> reporter: the superstars of the nba taking flight on the court. >> curry drives inside! >> reporter: and flying private during their busy season. this morning, basketball fans are calling foul saying there's a double standard for the women's league versus the men's league after a travel snafu forced the aces to forfeit a game. the nba contract prevents teams from playing the same day that they cross two time zones.

t the wnba has no such provision. after a travel snafu, the women were forced to forfeit the game. they were flying to washington d.c. but a series of delays and cancellations meant they didn't take off until 1:00 in the morning. the team finally arriving at their d.c. hotel around 4:00 p.m. the next day. more than 25 hours after their travel nightmare began and only four hours before tip-off. the aces deciding as a team not to play, citing the hours spent in airports and airlines in cramped quarters and having not slept in a bed since wednesday night, apologizing to fans, but saying that taking the court would put us at too great a risk for injury. on tuesday, the league announcing the team would be assessed a forfeit and loss for missing the game. the decision drawing outrage. >> it certainly was troublesome for the players. they would love to be getting the perks that the men get.

unfortunately, women's sports just aren't there yet. >> reporter: aces head coach says he's disappointed with the league's decision but adding that the team's focus is to win as much as possible to make the playoffs. that forfeit puts them in jeopardy with just a handful of games left to play. >> it was breast cancer awareness night for the mystics so they had a big crowd. they had to refund the tickets and offer as a good will tickets to another game. >> it's a tough situation. i hope they find a way to change this in the future. >> yeah, that would be good. >> thank you so much, ryan. now we go to something you don't see every day, cows. we don't see them every day but we don't see them helping fight crime. take a look at this police chopper video. that herd you see right there helping corral a suspect who allegedly stole an suv and then made a run for it. the cows were there to help out. take a listen. >> large group of cows is following her. for a good visual. looks like they may attack her. >> it looked like they may

attack her but what they did do, they pursued her across the field leading her right to law enforcement where she was taken into custody. seems like she was probably happy to see the cops and get away from the cows. >> holy cow. >> holy cow, that's a good one. i like that. >> sounds like one of our producers. a good visual. >> exactly. >> now we've got to go back to ginger. we've got some strong storms coming across the east. >> yes. again, i don't know if you saw this from yesterday, last night really. the lightning over manhattan and surrounding it. three people were struck by lightning in queens. when you have thunder rolling you got to get inside. that's the lesson we learned. there's a cold front approaching today so you will see more in the way of storms, not just in new york city but from the mid-atlantic to the northeast.

disappearance. now we're seeing mollie tibbetts' magnetic personality and hearing her voice. her family and friends posting these private home videos eager to keep the search alive. this morning, an intimate look at a playful mollie tibbetts, that infectious personality friends describe on full display in these newly surfaced home videos. this one taken just one day before the university of iowa student disappeared. >> worked in your life and used you and made you stronger through those obstacles. what your testimony is, is showing everyone the strength that god has given you. >> reporter: her family also posting this deeply personal video to social media. mollie speaking about faith and prayer in 2016. >> in that moment i kind of knew that was god's way of showing me that the power of prayer really was something and it was something that came into my life. >> reporter: the 20-year-old last seen jogging july 18th 7:30 p.m. investigators say she was wearing a pink sports top, shorts and running shoes.

"missing" posters still going up all over the small farming town of about 1500 people. >> we're treating this as a missing persons investigation and we're trying to find mollie and that continues to be our focus. >> reporter: despite community searches through nine-foot-tall cornfields, hundreds of tips and interviews, mollie's where abouts remain a mystery. her father sending out an emotional plea to anyone who might have his daughter. >> listen to mollie. put an end to this. you're in a little bit of trouble now. don't make it worse. >> and the reward for information leading to mollie's safe return now topping $300,000. that's a new record according to crimestoppers. the organization saying they received more than 660 tips which they are passing along to law enforcement. >> hopefully something in there will help. >> and those donations. so many people coming together, more than 180 individual donations, people trying to help out. >> they are. whit, thank you.

we move on to surprising information for pet lovers from a new york family who found out the hard way they don't actually own their dog. they're leasing it. now it could be repossessed. abc's eva pilgrim here with the story. i confess, i didn't even know there was such a thing as pet leasing. >> financing a pet, it is a thing in the excitement of bringing home a new pup. some are signing a lease only to be surprised later they don't own their furry friend. this morning, a warning to read before you sign. how much is that doggie in the window now depends on how you're paying for it and even then you may not actually own the dog. >> they have their money. no reason to take my dog. >> reporter: pure bred or designer pets are fetches thousands of dollars, so some pet stores and breeders are offering a new option in states like new york that allow it. take your furry friend home right away even if you don't have all the cash up front with a lease, like a car. >> you're so sweet, yes, you are.

>> reporter: and that's what danielle cittadino did when she got her golden retriever max at a long island pet store. this is the document she signed which states the terms of the lease. although she acknowledges the store owner discussed it with her, she says she didn't read it closely at the time. the federal trade commission issuing a warning last month spelling out what is required of sellers using lease agreements for pets. several states have already banned it. in new york where danielle lives, the new york state legislature to end puppy leasing. governor cuomo would have to sign it to make it law. instead of paying $1200 up front for max she says she paid $145.19 on time for two years. but now she is balking at paying the lender a final payment of $308.37 and is faced with losing max. if she doesn't pay, her dog would have to be returned at the end of the lease just like a car. >> max is our family. i don't want him going anywhere.

we we are back now with that new twist in the divorce battle between angelina jolie and brad pitt. in a new court filing jolie is alleging mr. pitt has failed to pay any meaningful child support for a year and a half. abc's paula faris is here with more. good morning, paula. >> good morning, everyone. brad pitt's camp is vehemently denying this latest claim. it's just the latest in an ugly and very contentious divorce battle that began almost two years ago. >> satisfied? >> not for years. >> reporter: their on-screen chemistry at one time earning them the status as hollywood's biggest power couple.

but this morning, it's angelina jolie and brad pitt's bitter divorce and custody battle that's grabbing headlines. on tuesday jolie filing public court documents asking a judge to dissolve her marriage to pitt and accusing the actor of not paying meaningful child support since their separation back in 2016, adding that jolie intends to file for the establishment of a retroactive child support order. a spokesperson for angelina jolie claims the recent filing was to provide closure to the former couple's marriage and that it will allow her and brad to recommit as devoted co-parents to their children. >> what angelina jolie's lawyers have done is basically said, hey, judge, we need your help and we are bringing this case to your attention. so far this whole case has been riddled with issues of custody and this filing is alerting the court that there is going to be an issue of finances as well. >> reporter: a source close to pitt telling abc news overnight brad has fulfilled his financial

first that extreme heat that is now hitting triple digits fueling massive wildfires. fire watches and warnings are now in effect. that as the east coast is suffering from scorching temperatures too. ginger, what's in the future of those western wildfires? >> temperatures getting even hotter, robin, all the way up to vancouver in canada. look at this. this is the holy fire from southern california. that is a fire whirl. this happens when the intense heat from the fire rises up and relatively cooler air rushes in. you get a rotation and that is just one of the dangers that we add to so many others. this is the mendocino complex fire. you've heard of this because it is now the state of california's largest wildfire on record which goes back to 1932, by the way. here's what's happening. that big ridge is really strong and it's going to only intensify the heat. seattle, for example, had their eighth 90-plus degree day of the season. they usually have three. they'll get at least two more this week. that will make ten. that's only happened two other times in their history.

so pretty intense heat. all the way down into death valley, las vegas, really excessive heat warnings and will get gustier. a lot of red flag warnings have gusts up to 35. relatively humidity up to 5%. here along the east coast, we're hot too. south carolina to massachusetts, heat advisories. robin and george. >> tough forecast. we move on to politics right now and the results from high-stakes primaries coming in overnight and from that key special election in ohio. that house election, too close to officially call but republicans and president trump claiming victory. i want to go back to our chief white house correspondent jon karl for the latest. they may claim victory but the fact it's this close is a warning sign for republicans. >> reporter: oh, no question, george. troy balderson, the republican candidate, does have a narrow lead. he will probably win ultimately, but the closeness of this race in such a solidly republican district is a real sign of trouble for republicans going ahead. this is a district that president trump carried by 11 points in 2016.

the previous republican incumbent in the last house race won by more than 35 points. in fact, george, if you go all the way back to 1938 the democrats have only won in this district once, so this should have been a layup for republicans and now it is a virtual tie. they may ultimately win, but, again, the closeness a real sign of trouble. there's another hotly contested race, too close to call this morning. that's in the republican governor's primary in the state of kansas. president trump made a late endorsement of a very controversial candidate kris kobach, you see him there. he is a staunch conservative, hard-line anti-immigration and chaired the president's now disbanded commission on voter fraud. that race is now neck and neck, too close to call. the other candidate is the sitting republican governor jeff colyer who has the support of most of the other republican establishment figures, just not the president. >> okay, jon karl, thanks very much. michael. >> thank you, george. now take a look at what

that's about $510 per household so becky worley is here to show us how to save some money. hey, becky. >> that number is staggering, michael. it doesn't include clothes and laptops but a lot is supplies which got me wondering, the dollar store started advertising big for back to school. so where should you shop? the big box store, the internet, the dollar store? well, where are the savings? meet the maxwells from san carlos, california. three kids, sam in high school and the twins, luke and will in middle school. they're helping us answer a burning back to school question, where to shop? big box, online or dollar store. for a challenge we use actual lists of mandated supplies. standard binders and pencils, of course, but the list also includes staples like cleaning supplies and tissues that schools now ask parents to provide. 20 items on these lists, they're exactly the same. you are headed to the big box store and you guys are headed to the dollar store. go.

meanwhile sam and i shop the same list online. andrea and will are doing well at the big box store. >> we need four more items. >> reporter: lots of choices and sale items. mark and luke make quick work in the dollar store. >> pencils, pens. >> reporter: everything is really a dollar. and they stocked up for back to school. >> add it to the cart. >> reporter: online shopping is fast and easy and we get everything on the list and done in minutes. when the shoppers come home we compared the actual haul. now, let's talk price and availability. our online shopping netted 20 out of 20 items but the final cost, we got all 20 things for $162. our big box shoppers were next. >> we got 19 of the 20 items, we spent $105. >> reporter: but the dollar store team had a very different tally. >> we got 16 of the 20 items and we spent a total of $33.38. >> reporter: that's a $72

and the captain of the night, i started talking to him and thought this guy -- i used to run some boats myself when i was a kid and he's the most important human being on the seas honestly. i mean it's bigger than military ships. it's the largest thing created bur man that moves. and he runs it. so in the middle of the night we're getting a little -- too much wind blowing up and he says, you're having some trouble. he has sort of a weird nordic accent. he is an old viking, i suppose. and he said, well, if you like, i can turn the ship and we can slow down a little bit for awhile. i said, don't you have someplace to be. it's all right, i'm the captain. >> it's good to be the captain. >> angle the ship. the wind went away. it was all quite extraordinary. you know, i'm very impressed with guys like that. >> power. left at the altar. >> right. my character, harry left her life when she was about 5 years old. and wants to rekindle a relationship for several reasons but he thinks it's time and thinks he'll choose this day, her wedding day because he's been keeping track of her on the internet to reacquaint themselves. and she gets left at the altar and then they end up on this cruise together because that was the honeymoon cruise and so, oh, there's a lot of sort of traditional jokes that proceed from that but it's a really fun relationship and she was great to work with. she is really professional and focused and shows up to work because she wants to get home and enjoy her life as well. that's how i feel so it was a great time and forgive my hairiness. i'm growing it out for another role. >> you want to see a little bit of it? >> hi.

>> and maria will help us out. what kind of take-out do we have today? >> barbecue pork. oh, my. and what is our second delivery? >> oh, my goodness, buttermilk chicken. >> buttermilk chicken. >> amazing. >> let's go to the kitchen. according to seamless, these are two of the top ten foods people order over the summer so start with the buttermilk fried chicken. >> people loved fried chicken and love it brought to the house but it can be cumbersome. a little hard to do. >> seems like it would be hard to do. what can we do? >> starting with what kind of chicken, instead of using big bone in chicken we use boneless skinless breasts and cooks much faster and evenly. we won't just bread it and fry it but brine it in pickle juice. so then we'll go right into that

buttermilk and egg mixture to make this the glue, hence the buttermilk. this is not any kind of breading. this is a mixture of almond flour, parmesan cheese and italian spices. >> why almond flour. >> following a gluten-free diet, this is much healthier. now you can definitely fry this in hot oil, get it crispy, beautiful. a version right there or put it on a wire rack baking sheet and cook it 30, 40 minutes at 350, comes out perfect. then how do we make it intull gent? >> jazz it up. >> this is butter. hot sauce and maple syrup. >> ooh. >> and then we'll drizzle that. give it kind of a wing vibe plus a buttery, hot heat vibe and put a little bit of that on there and that's easy to do and cooks up in 30 minutes. if you do it on the pan fry method you're done in 30 minutes. we have audience members, though, who are back there and they're trying it.

so what do you think so far? >> looks great. >> looks great? eat it. >> i didn't come here to say looks great. for breakfast. >> now we'll do pulled pork, right, barbecued pork. starting with a big shoulder. you got to smoke it for 14 hours. who has that time? me and you were both athletes. not me, more of a -- by athlete i mean i did high school theater, so what we do is rub some -- these are blade pork chops, ask your butcher for them. smaller version of a pork shoulder. a lot of fat. we'll rub it going into a pan that we rendered some bacon fat in there. and we'll sear it up, crisp it up. bacon fat will give us our smoky element. here we have it. now we have it ready to go in a pyrex dish here. pour our favorite barbecue sauce to help thin it out and bake it. >> for how long? >> no smoker or grill. until it's tender.

bring that number down. deborah roberts here with the details. >> an important one. this is a heartbreaking statistic. we've often reported on these tragic accidents. experts say the majority of these accidental shootings happen in the home with parents unaware that their children have had access to their guns. with that in mind, this new video is hoping to sound an alarm. >> hey, dad. do we have a gun? >> reporter: it's the chilling psa you won't forget. a loving dad with a gun in the home. >> anyway, i need it to protect you, your sister and mom. >> from what? >> from bad guys like on tv. >> but what about the eight kids who get shot every day by mistake. their dad is probably thinking they were safe too. >> reporter: his revealing a stunning statistic. on average eight children a day accide accidentally injured or killed by guns. stories often making the headlines. >> authorities say this 4-year-old boy accidentally shot his 2-year-old cousin. >> reporter: investigators say the boy found the loaded handgun in his mother's purse.

>> reporter: the tragic loss of young lives prompted this new national campaign by the brady center to prevent gun violence with the hopes of ending what they call family fire. >> we want this country to give a name to these incidents that happen every single day and are too often called accidents. >> reporter: they insist the new message isn't about the right to own a gun but about saving children. in fact, the nra itself has expressed concerning about the dangers of unsecured guns on its website cautioning about safe storage. >> everyone wants to keep our kids safe and so this is decidedly not political. >> reporter: improperly stored weapons, a big problem. >> more alarming is that 4.6 million children in this country live in homes with loaded and unlocked guns. so, this campaign is really aimed to raise awareness of that fact. >> reporter: so how best to protect your family? the nra recommends storing guns so they're not accessible to unauthorized persons and the

brady center says keeping guns locked and unloaded reduces family fire risk by 70%. some health officials are seeing it as an urgent problem. according to the children's hospital of philadelphia, more than 76% of first and second graders actually know where the family gun is and 36% say they've handled it, george, without their parents' knowledge correcting what their parents think. >> you get into something important. the nra and brady center have been on different sides. this is something everyone can agree on. >> everybody can. it's about saving the lives of (sound of footsteps) (sound of car door opening) (car door closes) (sound of engine starting)
