too. we're looking at san jose 287. it's right now the north bay, the east bay have moderate air quality. not quite to poor yet. it's the santa clara valley that has the worst. tracey, we still have this never ending air quality warning and for today our highest fire danger is up in the mountains north of los angeles, but a new fire weather watch has just been issued for parts of the bay air coming up. >> okay. that's what it looks like on mike's maps. let's zoom in to the streets of the east bay to see what this looks like there. amy hollyfield. >> reporter: this morning it was cool, it felt okay. there was a breeze but the warmer it gets, the worse it feels. the air feels thicker. the quality is declining. it makes you realize if you're

going to work out today, maybe you should sit this one out. the view from drone view 7 shows you what experts are worried about and what you may be feeling down on the ground. >> the air's not too good. i feel something, i smell something. >> i definitely feel it. it drives me crazy. you feel it in your lungs and eyes. it's just depressing. it really is. >> this is a combination of smog from cars and smoke from the fires. it caused authorities to declare a spare the air day today. we consulted with a doctor for advice on how to handle these uncomfortable conditions. >> try to stay indoors as much as possible. people with air-conditioning should put their air-conditioning on to recycle. keep the windows and doors closed. if you have to be out and be active, you want to do activities early in the morning. >> reporter: janet rhodes was out this morning. she says she definitely wants to be inside this afternoon. >> didn't notice that it looked smokey yesterday and today. i'm not really feeling it right

now, because it's still early morning and it's cool out and that's when i take my walks. >> reporter: the experts tell us you really should just skip your outdoor workout today. >> this isn't real exercise. it's an easy walk with the dog, i try and do everything in the morning and just stay inside in the afternoon when it's really bad. >> reporter: if you are going out this afternoon, not a bad idea to grab one of these, make sure you cover your nose and your mouth, especially for the elderly, children and those with lung conditions. those are the most vulnerable in these conditions. live in la fee yet, abc 7 news. >> thank you. we could see more of the spare the air days this summer because we learned that the men den sinno complex is going to take weeks to put out. more firefighters deployed now than at any other time in the state's history and my colleague from abc 7 mornings has new information. jess? >> the state's resources are on empty. we've had to ask 17 other states for help and even international

crews have stepped in. we did get new numbers within just the last few hours. the mendocino complex fires have burned more than 300,000 acres combined. the complex is made up of two fires, the ranch and river fires. the larger fire, the ranch fire now 46% contained. the river fires 81% contained. cal fire doesn't expect full containment until at least september 1st. the complex fires as you mentioned, reggie, now considered the largest fire event in state history. meanwhile up north in trinity counties, firefighters still battling the carr fire. they're having a tough time making progress. it's now burjed more than 173,000 acres. 47% contained. the riverside and orange county border it's burned 3,300 acres of land in the cleveland national forest, its 5%

contained this morning and the holy fire broke out monday afternoon. it has really exploded out of control since then. it's really stretched firefighting resources to the limit. one cabin has gone up in flames. several camp grounds have been evacuated. no homes in lake elsinore that's the closest city to where that's burning, no homes have been evacuated. as we watch all of these fires burning in the state, things can change at a moment's notice. it's already been a record setting wildfire season. fires really seem to be moving faster than firefighters can handle at this point and we are strapped thin. i'm jessica castro, abc 7 news back to you. >> thank you. we're working so hard and we're sending out push alerts and a closer look at why some experts say these wildfires are becoming so devastating. you can get customized alerts to your phone by downloading the app. we have developing news out of a new york hospital where two people are dead. authorities say there's been a

shooting at a hospital north of new york city but that the incident was contain today a single room and there is no ongoing threat. this happened on winchester medical center this morning. officials say the two had some sort of family relation and the authorities are treating this as an apparent murder/suicide. now on to politics. republicans are growing concerned about the midterm elections. voters in five states went to the polls yesterday and in ohio's 12th congressional district, that race was too close to call. to give this some context, in 2016, the republican incumbent won by more than 35 points. emily raul as more on that race. >> the race is still too close to call but republican troy balderson is claiming victory. >> very honored for the opportunity to represent the voters of the 12th congressional district. >> reporter: it should have been an easy win in a solidly

republican area. president trump won ohio's 12th by double digits in 2016 but with tightening polls, the president was forced to come to the suburban columbus district to campaign for balderson. >> i'd like to thank president trump -- >> reporter: the president tweeting today after my speech on saturday night there was a big turn for the better. now troy wins a great victory during a very tough time of the year for voting. but democrat danny o'connor is not conceding. >> can you believe how close this is? we are in a tight ballgame and you made this possible. >> reporter: balderson and o'connor are fight to go fill the remaining months of the current representatives termand will be on the ballot again in november. and in another race with a late presidential endorsement, kris kobach has a narrow lead over jeff collier in the kansas

governor's race. a gop win harder in november. kansas legislator laura kelly won the democratic primary. in ohio there are still more than 8,000 uncounted votes between provisional and absentee ballots that could be enough for o'connor to tip the scale and force a recount but we won't know for at least ten days. emily rao. a new york congressman is denying charges he used inside information to make stock trades. federal prosecutors indicted republican christopher collins on charges that include conspiracy and wire fraud. prosecutors say collins tried to find out early about the results of tests by a biotech company. he sits on the board of that company which is developed a drug intended to treat multiple sclerosis. the man wanted for a double stabbing is in jail this morning. u.s. marshalls took 27-year-old solomon espenoza into custody

yesterday. one of the victims was cut on the arm and the other cut on the face. jury deliberations are under way in the case against weed killer monsanto. 37-year-old dwayne lee johnson filed the civil suit against the pesticide manufacturer. he worked for a school district as the integrative pest manager. a large part of his job was spraying roundup weed killer. johnson's attorney say after two and a half years of spraying it, he was diagnosed with cancer. the evidence shows its product is not responsible says monsanto. driving in san francisco can be a nightmare. now there's a new website to help you get around. babies need more than just blankets and diapers. we'll take you to the first breast milk driver. changes coming guys test out some powerful speakers. >> this is so

is. >> >> . we have new details this morning on musk's plan to buyout tesla, board members are now reviewing that proposal. six board members say musk introduced the $72 billion bid last week. we first told you at mid-day yesterday that musk announced he has the funding to buy tesla's shares at $420 each. shares initially rose 11% on that announcement and they fell slightly this morning. we are learning today about a type of medical donation that is probably new for a lot of you. you know obviously how blood drives work, imagine that but

instead a drive for breast milk. here's more on that with amanda? >> reporter: i'm told that supplies are at an all-time low for these breast milk donations but the demand for the donor milk is at an all-time high. this isn't your typical blood drive or donation collection. the need is for something not everyone can supply, breast milk. >> i'm always referring moms to donate as much as they can for our milk bank. we need that milk for our babies. >> she's expecting her fourth and fifth children. as a mother she understands the potential for complications. and it's parents who suffer those kplikss who will benefit from these breast milk donation. >> we always have born. >> reporter: it's the tiniest humans who suffer without the help.

one to two pound babies also known as mike crow preemies. they can't tolerate any other food source and we're trying so hard to get those moms to breast feed and sometimes when the babies are born too early, the milk just doesn't come in on time. >> reporter: that's when her organization pumps up their effort. it's the only nonprofit milk bank in california servicing nicus across the state that require donor milk for babies. we're in san jose where it's easy to see the haze from those fires in northern california. the stress from those fires can definitely impact lactation for those northern california nursing mothers and this is just another reason why these donations are so important. we're at 3030 alan rock avenue in san jose. the donation drive will run until about noon. i'm reporting live here in san jose. >> interesting point about the

and just in today, some good news from lake county. a few of these mandatory evacuations in place because of the mendocino complex wildfire have now been reduced to an evacuation advisory. so here are the affected communities. upper lake, nice, lucerne, glenn

haven and clear lake oaks. residents in those areas can now return home. highway 20 is now open to all traffic. announcer: now your accurate weather forecast. what you need to be aware if you're going back home. i put the outlying -- the latest outline right there. you can see from the complex fire right on top of where we're going to have the heightened fire danger, the fire weather watch that starts at 2:00 tomorrow afternoon and goes through at least 11:00 saturday and that's also the carr fire you see right there to the west of redding. this entire area's going to see an increase in winds and the humidity's going to drop. temperatures will drop but that's not the main threat. it's going to be that wind. here's the latest right now. the ranch fire, temperatures pretty good. about 78. it's calm in the valleys. you go up about 2,800 feet in the river fire you can see winds coming out of the northwest starting to gusts up to 15 miles per hour and that's going to increase. the low clouds you can see them

spilling over the east bay hills mixing in with the smoke and once the cloud stops spilling over, look at the smoke come right back in its absence and that's why all of us have moderate air quality right now in places like walnut creek and the east bay could have poor air quality this afternoon. cooler and cleaner air is going to arrive this weekend especially by sunday. if you're heading out, as you head out into the periphery. we go to brentwood, 68, 70 as you head toward fremont, 74 in san jose and 57 in san francisco. let's talk about being outside today. if you're exercising, it's almost too late if you want to exercise outside as the air continues to deteriorate. if you go to the beaches, limited breezes and same thing over the bay but that's also why the air quality's dropping because we don't have that rush of cool air that we've had the last couple of days off the ocean. where the temperature today will be 64 in tampa bay. mid80s in the south bay.

up around the fires, 1100 in lake port. going to the game tonight. jewish heritage night. you have to have a special tickets for it. dodgers and the a's. first pitch at 7:05. temperatures going to be warmer this afternoon, especially inland than they were yesterday but as we head toward the overnight hours will cool down into the low and upper 50s. look at the radar. off the big island, picking up. hektder. the eye is 190 miles away from land and its going to head south as a category three. winds could be up around 74 miles per hour. we could also have waves up to 15 to 20 feet in some isolated areas of flooding. thankfully the islands will miss a direct hit. it's going to be hottest tomorrow. the heat will hang on above average levels friday and saturday. you can see that cooler air coming in for sunday, monday and tuesday. >> my sister was worried about

it. she's on the big island. >> she's going to get some rain and wind but hopefully nothing damaging. >> they're used to the rain. movie buffs listen up. those changes include adding a new best popular film and also presenting some awards during commercial breaks on tv. that's in an effort to keep the oscars run time at three hours. the moves were approved by the academy last night and just announced a short time ago starting in 2020, the oscars will also be several weeks earlier. the academy hasn't said what constitutes a popular film, but trust me the twitterverse is talking about it today. also a milestone made in hawaii, the new movie already playing in select theaers.

with pg&e in the sierras. and i'm an arborist since the onset of the drought, more than 129 million trees have died in california. pg&e prunes and removes over a million trees every year to ensure that hazardous trees can't impact power lines. and since the onset of the drought we've doubled our efforts. i grew up in the forests out in this area and honestly it's heartbreaking to see all these trees dying. what guides me is ensuring that the public is going to be safer and that these forests can be sustained and enjoyed by the community in the future.

history made last night. this is the debut of a movie where all the lead roles are played by asian actors. it's a romantic comedy called, "crazy rich asians" it's the first major movie in 25 years to feature a predominant asian cast. it's just the start of a movement for more inclusion in hollywood. >> it's all the feels in the

world except for sadness. it really is. it's just every emotion. >> there are so many other asian and mags american artists out there who are so talented and want to be seen and heard and the fact that i get to be apart of this cast is such of such tremendous talent, i feel so lucky. >> the director john chu grew up working in a restaurant chef chu's. you're looking at a herd of 1,200 very thirtiy cows swarming a water truck in southeast australia. the video was shot in may and it vividly depicts the serious drought they're having down under. most of the outback hasn't seen rain in the fast few months. in just half an hour a luxury hotel in san francisco will hold a sweet benefit. the palace hotel is serving root beer floats. all the proceeds go to the children's hospital.
