let's get far away from that and go now to the children who were flying halfway across the country when their plane was diverted. we've been following these kids, apparently, they were sent to another city. >> and the parents were never notified when their kids were being shuffled around. here's steve osunsami. >> reporter: their parents are furious. 9-year-old carter gray and his 7-year-old sister etta were flying as unaccompanied minors on frontier airlines in july. mom was waiting for hours at the airport. stormy weather was keeping flights from landing. shortly after midnight, the 9-year-old using another kid's phone messages his father that they are stuck in atlanta where the plane was diverted. still no word from frontier. >> i think i was starting to boil over after every minute going by. >> reporter: at 4:23 a.m. the

attorneys have responded to the special counsel's latest requests for an interview. they are looking to narrow the scope and omit any questions about obstruction. here is jonathan karl. >> reporter: it's a move that sets up a potential constitutional showdown between the president and robert mueller. president trump's lawyers rejected the special counsel's request for an in-person interview on a range of subjects including possible obstruction of justice by the president. sources familiar with the negotiations tell abc news, the president's lawyers told mueller's team that he is willing to consider, quote, appropriate written questions but is not inclined to answer questions related to obstruction of justice. it's a counteroffer unlikely to satisfy mueller. and the president's lead attorney called on mueller to wrap up his investigation before the start of the fall campaign. >> it's about time that it ends, and i hope the special counsel is as sensitive to it as we are. we do not want to run into the november elections.

individual and as the president. >> reporter: it's anybody's guess over how long this back and forth over an interview can go on. but a subpoena from the special counsel is a distinct possibility. in fact, the president's legal team is already preparing to fight a subpoena on the belief that one could well be coming. jonathan karl, abc news, the white house. the trump administration is hitting russia with new sanctions. this follows the poisoning of former russian double agent and his daughter in britain. they had previously condemned the attack. russia has denied any role in the poisonings. the sanctions go into effect later this month. california continues to battle through what could be the worst wildfire season in the state's histy. the blistering heat in the west isn't helping matters at all. there are red flag warnings north of san francisco. and death valley is at 120 today.

let's get far away from that and go now to the children who were flying halfway across the country when their plane was diverted. we've been following these kids, apparently, they were sent to another city. >> and the parents were never notified when their kids were being shuffled around. here's steve osunsami. >> reporter: their parents are furious. 9-year-old carter gray and his 7-year-old sister etta were flying as unaccompanied minors on frontier airlines in july. mom was waiting for hours at the airport. stormy weather was keeping flights from landing. shortly after midnight, the 9-year-old using another kid's phone messages his father that they are stuck in atlanta where the plane was diverted. still no word from frontier. >> i think i was starting to boil over after every minute going by. >> reporter: at 4:23 a.m. the kids text that they're in a
