this state program call or visit two and a half weeks after police say a man stabbed and killed nia wilson at a b.a.r.t. station the b.a.r.t. board meet this morning to consider a plan. the safety plan being presented right now to b.a.r.t. board members is in direct response not just to nia wilson's murder but to a number of violent attacks in the past few weeks. amy hollyfield has been watching the meeting in oakland. >> reporter: the general manager told the board that the b.a.r.t. system needs to be safer, that she knows that and she says she has a plan. she is presenting it to the

board right now. this meeting starting at 9:00 this morning. it is full. it appears there is a lot of interest on thisds t will cost million. she has added police to trains. she's having them working on their day offs and overtime. she wants to improve the train's surveillance cameras, wants to update them, wants to add video screens showing realtime images at the stations. she wants to show call boxes. she does want to calm any concerns out there about privacy. she says privacy is critically important to her, so she emphasized what they will not be doing. >> we will not be introducing any surveillance systems that will collect any personal

identifiable information. this is about systems and crowds. second we are not introducing a facial recognition technology today as the technology is unproven in a transit environment. >> show me how spending this much money on further criminalizing the b.a.r.t. system is going to help our people, right? because it test test out. the stats aren't there. you can't show me stats that demonstrate the things you're trying to do actually lead to public safety because they don't. >> reporter: a couple of speakers did express concern about the cost and really pushed b.a.r.t. to help reach out to the community for help. the board will likely have a long discussion about these proposal, a vote on on whether to move forward on some of these ideas could come today. >> amy, thanks for the update. and we turn now to the northern california wildfires and we have some sad news to report. another firefighter has died in connection to the carr fire.

this morning we learned a heavy equipment operator assign today the fire was killed in a traffic crash. two other firefighters have also died fighting the carr now to the latest on the mendocino complex fires. the river fire is now 84% contained. combined this is the largest wildfire in state history at more than 300,000 acres. some evacuees were allowed back home yesterday but many still arrived at evacatievacatievacevn

this is new video just into the abc 7 newsroom this morning. a look at just how close the fire is now getting to homes. >> reporter: it is raining ash. the holy fire continuing to burn behind me. you can see the sky is filled with smoke and just the past couple of minutes you can see itten the ridge line behind me. take a look at this window right here. you can see that it is painted red now. now over the past 4 hours fire crews doing everything they can to protect this community. and it comes as authorities tell us those flames were started on purpose. a suspect now behind bars charged with arson. we spoke with some of the people who live in this community. they told us they are furious someone would ignite this fire on purpose and put their lives

missing iowa college student with bay area ties. the man who may have been the last person to see molly tibbetts is now speaking to bay area news. he saw her jogging past his home at 9:00 p.m. the night before she was reported missing. and he says that wasn't the first time he saw her running several times a week. >> she jogged down the street, and up the hill and thought nothing of it until i heard somebody was missing and it hit me i haven't seen that runner since then. >> law enforcement will not comment on riley or any other potential witnesses. investigators say they've received nearly 800 tips about this case. the reward is now up to $313,000. the son of a union city police chief was part of a brutal beating of a sick man. surveillance video shows two men

which is perfect for the volunteers out here. a lot of kids from the area as well as some of our own colleagues helping out. what they're doing behind me they're trying to clear this stuff away. they're trying to get this out because it's an invasive plant species. they want to protect our native plants here in san francisco to continue to have those kinds of plants, our native plants grow, that's part of the work they're doing. and it's part of the program funded through $1.5 million the disney company awarded nation would to several different programs. and it's local ones like this that benefit. 24 local ninth and tenth grade students along with abc 7 volunteers helped cleanup the bay park. olivia is one of san francisco's program designed to connect teenagers with wildlife in their

communities. the kids are interviewed, selected for the program even earning a small stipend. and they do a variety of cleanup projects in their neighborhoods. today they're picking up trash. >> so items like this, gum wrappers, stuff like that. >> reporter: and clearing brush away from the trail. funding for today's work comes from the disney abc meet me in the park grant. $20,000, where does that money go? >> it's important for us to be able to facilitate projects citywide and purchase tools for the youth, materials and identifying vests you see today to let people know we have people out working. >> reporter: today's work isn't easy so olivia has this advice the next time you visit. >> just be mindful of your surroundings. >> reporter: and the kids are not only helping to make the park more beautiful by getting

plans for a new separate u.s. space course. vice president pence says it's needed to ensure heightened competition. this morning the parent of two kids are furious after they say frontier airlines made their young son and daughter spend the night in a hotel. the father says the airline never called to tell him that his 9 and 7-year-old stayed in that hotel with four other unaccompanied minors and one female airline employee. this happened after the kid's flight to orlando got diverted to atlanta. the father says the airline never asked for permission to put the kids in a hotel. >> it was very infuriating and very outraged. i think both jennifer and i would have drove to atlanta. >> frontier airlines dispute the

better air quality. the sky is actually just a little bit clearer than it was this time yesterday. let's take a look from walnut creek and we'll show you one of those areas that could have poor air quality later on. this one is going to be good. we checked that before we allowed everybody to come out here and do some manual labor. what they're doing is amazing. wul nut creek to the south bay that's probably where we're going to have our poorest air quality. ful uone of those most sensitive to the air because of the smoke and fires created to our north then just stay inside one more day and run the air conditioner. we've got another concern i want to talk about and also it pertains to those fires once again. and unfortunately those winds are going to pick up starting at 2:00 this afternoon. and we've got quite a few days until 11:00 saturday evening.

so that entire time, it's going to be a bit more stressful for those folks. let's talk about our forecast overall by taking a look at the highlights. east bay camera and you can see the haze out there. but not quite as much as it was yesterday. the temperatures will start roll back tomorrow and we'll be back to average by sunday with some cleaner air then. if you're thinking about going out today just be aware of the fact we do have the potential for poor air quality. so try to do stuff outside early or try not to burn anything as we head deeper into the forecast. 60s at the cost, 70s san francisco, 80s inlands until you get to the north bay and deep into the south bay. if you're going to game tonight we're going to have jerry garcia
