miles. these flames have raced up this hillside. check out how close they are to this home. they are massive. we've got a number of planes in the area. air tankers swooping in dropping streaks of fire retardant. firefighters making a stand against the approaching inferno and people spraying down their homes before they're forced to leave. >> got to get out. >> reporter: the 10,000-acre wildfire 5% contained. the sheer power of the blaze terrifying residents. >> this is the first time i've been anywhere i've heard the fire. it's rough. >> reporter: this morning, the threat is still very real. these flames are continuing to bear down on homes in this community as the man who allegedly started the fire is facing six felonies including arson. robin. >> seeing those flame, all right, will, thank you. now to new protests over the national anthem.takinghe field

du as the music began. abc's paula faris is here with more. good morning, paula. >> reporter: good morning. 24 of the 32 nfl teams were in action last night. granted, it was just the first preseason game but we did see several player demonstrations during the national anthem. president trump tweeting the nfl players are at it again taking a knee when they should be standing proudly for the national anthem. he tweeted stand proudly for your national anthem or be suspended without pay. in miami, kenny stills taking a knee while defensive safety robert quinn raises his fist in the air right there. and philadelphia eagles safety malcolm jenkins also raised a fist during the national anthem. now, the nfl said on thursday it will not discipline players for any protests during the national anthem while it attempts to reach a resolution with the nfl players association over its anthem policy which they're working on right now. the league reiterated for now the anthem will continue to be played before every game and all

player and personnel on the field at that time are expected to stand during the presentation of the flag and performance of the anthem. personnel who do not wish to do so can choose to remain in the locker room. the teams are also working on their own individual policies, hopefully they get it done before the season starts which is four weeks from yesterday. >> but if you have a league policy and have a team policy that don't go together -- >> right. >> -- there is no policy. >> well, and the jets' acting owner said if there is an nfl policy, the players being suspended or fined, he will pay for it. all to be determined. >> a lot of owners stepping up there. we'll see what happens, paula, as the season gets closer. >> four weeks from yesterday the season starts. i know you're ready. >> i am ready. the space force, that new branch of the military, the trump administration wants to create it by 2020. let's head to martha raddatz and, martha, they've already started working on a logo for merchandise. >> reporter: they sure have. the trump campaign is working on logos.

no sooner did vice president pence roll out the plans for a space force than the campaign reached out to supporters to choose their favorite space force logo. the intention, to sell merchandise to support trump/pence in 2020. the merchandise could well be popular, but a space force is a long way from becoming reality. in fact it would take an act of congress to create a new branch of the service. but donald trump has been enthusia enthusia enthusiastically advocating for this space force and the pentagon is now figuring out exactly what that would take and how that would work, amy. >> okay, martha. i mean, logos aside, we should point out there are real threats

in space that could disrupt military operations, even daily life. >> reporter: absolutely. the u.s. has a vast array of military intelligence communication satellites that provide everything from gps on our phones to tracking missiles and ships and those could, indeed, be vulnerable and china and russia are making advances in anti-satellite technology, but the pentagon is already tracking that threat and has a space command under the air force with 30,000 personnel working to keep our space assets safe, but president trump wants that to be its own new force and the pentagon is requesting another $8 billion to do it, amy. >> it sounds like there is a lot more to come on this. martha, thank you. michael. >> thank you, amy. this morning, the president's in-laws are officially u.s. citizens. first lady melania trump sponsoring her parents who took the citizenship oath thursday in manhattan. our white house correspondent tara palmeri has more. >> reporter: president trump's in-laws slipping in and out of the manhattan federal building where they took the oath of u.s. citizenship. sources tell abc news that first lady melania trump sponsored her slovenian born parents, viktor and amalija knavs.

conference never happened. for "good morning america," tara palmeri, abc news, washington. that news about the first lady's parents gaining u.s. citizenship coming as the trump administration faces a firestorm over another immigration issue. a federal judge threatening to hold the attorney general jeff sessions in contempt of court after finding out that a migrant woman and her daughter who were seeking asylum were put on a plane to el salvador while their appeal was pending. the judge ordered their plane turned around, family is back in the usa for now. the latest strange twist in the russia investigation. the woman once called the manhattan madam by some media outlets and notorious for running an escort service is expected to testify this morning before special counsel robert mueller's grand jury in washington. abc's david wright has much more

on all of this. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, amy. this is an unusual witness for the mueller grand jury but kristin davis is no stranger to political scandal. she ran the business that famously ended the political career of an ambitious new york state governor. she was known as the manhattan madam, her business billed discreetly to high-powered clients as davis investments. >> it's investment in your fun, in your happiness. >> reporter: a prostitution conglomerate with nearly 10,000 clients, among them client number 9, new york state's attorney general and later governor, eliot spitzer who spent $15,000 on prostitutes. when the scandal broke in 2008, spitzer was forced to resign and davis went briefly to jail. >> kristin davis is a brilliant woman, a friend of mine, someone who has made mistakes and has paid her debt to society. >> reporter: president trump's adviser roger stone is an old friend, an employer of her, so

close that stone is god father to davis' 2-year-old son. now stone is under investigation in connection with the russia probe and the special counsel wants the grand jury to hear from davis. >> she knows of no russian collusion or wikileaks collaboration or any other illegal activity on my part in connection with the presidential election or otherwise and she's going to talk to the prosecutors voluntarily. >> reporter: now, davis had an informal meeting with mueller's team last wednesday and now this expected grand jury appearance today. sources tell abc news that mueller's team has been pushing her and others about possible connections between roger stone and wikileaks, which was one of the conduits for those democratic emails hacked by the russians. robin. >> all right, david, thank you. now to a state of emergency declared in virginia as we approach the one-year mark of that violent white nationalist protest in charlottesville last year where a counter protester

heather heyer was killed. there are now fears about what could happen again this weekend and eva pilgrim has the latest. >> reporter: white nationalists are planning unite the white rallies around the country marking the one-year anniversary of their deadly event in charlottesville. [ chanting you will not replace us ] these images of men marching on the university of virginia's campus shook the country. the group converged in charlottesville protesting plans to remove the statue of robert e. lee. [ chanting white lives matter ] the tension building during that weekend. the violence only escalating. chaos in the streets as demonstrators clashed with counterprotesters. turning the streets of charlottesville into a battle zone and then panic and chaos. a car plowing through a crowd of people leaving bystanders searching for their loved ones. >> no! i need my sister! >> reporter: one person, 32-year-old heather heyer, was killed. this morning the alleged driver,

james alex fields is still behind bars now facing charges for murder and committing a hate crime. heather's mom says she sometimes comes to the crash scene. >> i often go down there on my own in the evening sometimes or just to stop and read the messages that people have left and kind of absorb heather's energy. >> reporter: this weekend rallies are planned across the country, d.c. and charlottesville both under a state of emergency. the largest rally planned for sunday in our nation's capital. >> we know that we have people coming to our city for the sole purpose of spewing hate. it didn't make sense last year and it doesn't make sense now. >> reporter: and there are plans in place both here in charlottesville and in d.c. to deal with those protesters. you can see the memorial set up here in charlottesville in memory of the woman who died. in d.c., they've actually decided that with or without a carry permit you cannot carry a gun near those protest sites.

police there saying if you are seen with a gun in those areas, you will be arrested. robin. >> hopefully this time the police will step in and, of course, we're thinking of heather heyer's family this morning. thank you very much. michael. now to a college basketball coach in custody this morning accused of punching a new york tourist who hit his head on the sidewalk and later died. wake forest assistant coach jamill jones is now facing charges and abc's t.j. holmes has the story. >> reporter: an ncaa basketball coach is facing assault charges. >> no comment. >> reporter: after police say he threw a deadly punch sunday in an alleged misunderstanding about an uber ride. police say the man seen in this surveillance video is wake forest assistant coach jamill jones getting out of his suv moments after investigators say 35-year-old sandor szabo knocked on jones' window thinking it was his uber driver.

according to prosecutors jones followed him and allegedly knocked him down with one punch. szabo hit his head on the concrete, lo c police say jones drove away. szabo lived in florida but was in new york to attend a wedding. he was taken to a hospital in critical condition where he died two days later. >> really nice guy and everyone here is just stunned and shocked and we don't know what to say. >> reporter: on thursday, four days after the alleged incident the coach turned himself in to new york authorities. >> the jones family sends their deepest condolences and sympathies to the szabo family. >> reporter: wake forest university tells abc news they are aware of this matter and we are gathering information. the could was -- the coach was in court. he's pleaded not guilty. he was released on his own recognizance but, again, it all stemmed from an incident. many of us do it all the time. you approach a different car on the street looking for your uber driver. we don't know what happened after that but that sparked this whole incident and a man a now

dead. >> thinking of the family. thanks. now to a possible hate crime in california. all caught on camera. two teens seen beating an elderly man, one of the teens then revealed to be the son of a police chief. abc's marcus moore is in los angeles with that story and, marcus, the chief wrote an open letter saying he's disgusted. >> amy, he said he's disgusted and hurt. really an extraordinary moment. the police chief pouring out his heart in this emotional letter to the public after his son's arrest and he has seen the same video of this vicious attack that you are about to watch. it seems to start with two suspects appearing to confront 71-year-old sahib natt as he walks beside a park. then out of nowhere a punishing kick. before it's over one comes back to kick the elderly sick man while he's still on the ground even appearing to spit on him before leaving. >> everybody is scared. me, all my old guys, we're scared a lot. >> reporter: they're facing charges of robbery, elder abuse and assault with a deadly weapon

but the victim's family says it was a hate crime. >> that is a hate crime. when they spit, that is a hate crime. >> reporter: then that stunning revelation. neighboring union city police chief darryl mcallister helping authorities identify his own 18-year-old son tyrone as a suspect in the brutal attack later writing on facebook words can barely describe how embarrassed, dejected and hurt he and his family are feeling right now. adding my stomach has been churning since the moment i learned this news. the chief also wrote that violence and hatred is not what they have taught their children saying that intolerance for others is not in their vocabulary, let alone their values. tyrone mcallister is expected in court later this morning. aik -- amy. >> all right, pretty incredible that he spoke up and spoke out even though that was his own son. >> did what was righ >> michael. we're going to turn to a sweet moment you have to see to believe. take a look. a real seal, yep, training with the navy s.e.a.l.s.

filed civil lawsuits. one also sued for sexual harassment. the matter settled out of court. >> that i was ever involved in a conflict that resulted in a lawsuit is something that i really regret. i had never had any complaints like that made about me before in my life and it was -- it was really embarrassing and i didn't know how to handle it and i didn't agree with everything that was -- the way that i was being described but i wanted to try to make it right and so we made it right in the way that was asked at the time, put it behind us and move on with our lives. >> reporter: affleck won best actor in 2017 for "manchester by the sea," but with the allegations against him surfacing he opted out of presenting the best actress awards at the oscars this year. >> i think it was the right thing to do. just given everything that was going on in our culture at the moment. but i think that just bigger picture that, you know, and in this business women have underrepresented and underpaid and objectified and diminished and humiliated and belittled in a bazillion ways and just

gio benitez is here with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, so many of you talking about this on social media right now. that 16-year-old girl says it was her friend who pushed her off that bridge. now we're learning that friend is an adult. there are questions this morning over whether she should be criminally charged for pushing her off. this morning, the girl seen in this video being pushed off a bridge and into the water 60 feet below is now speaking out from her hospital bed. >> so she was counting down but i didn't think of anything of it and i was like, no, like don't count down. i won't go if you count down. i'm not ready. >> reporter: the video now shared around the world shows 16-year-old jordan being pushed off the bridge after the teen balked after jumping. she says it was her friend. >> after i was pushed in i think i might have fainted midair. i don't really remember the fall, but then i remember falling into the water. >> reporter: the teen ending up with four broken ribs and punctured lungs.

in the hospital thursday holgerson describing what was going through her mind. >> in the air i was trying to push myself forward so i could be like straight up and down so that my feet hit first but that didn't really work. >> reporter: holgerson's mother now saying the friend who pushed her is an adult and should have known better. >> she should turn herself in and realize what she did wrong. this is not okay. she could have killed my daughter. >> this could have been horrible. she could have died. when you fall three times your height, 50% of people will die. that's usually 25 feet. >> reporter: now many wondering if there will be charges brought against the young woman who pushed the high school junior. >> the investigation has to determine why did she push her? did she have some other motivation, particularly to hurt the young girl or was this, again, just some kind of mistake? >> reporter: and police are now telling us they are investigating this. but they won't say whether they are pursuing charges. meanwhile we learned the teen was released from the hospital and at home resting with her family. >> when you watch that video you could actually hear her hitting the water.

with kate upton, he hit a really dark time in his life and instead of leaving she saved him. they're the golden couple who seem to have it all. justin verlander the superstar world series-winning pitcher for the houston astros married to kate upton, one of the most famous models in the world but this morning verlander is revealing to bleacher report that the sunny surface the world saw was not the complete truth saying upton was instrumental in me not, like, jumping off a bridge. i was depressed and kind of just upset at the world. that's because just as they were starting their relationship verlander started suffering a series of injuries first more injuries to his groin, his abdominal muscles and hip muscles. as verlander describes it he was a hot mess and as his body deteriorated so did his game. fans booed him off the field and social media became a relentless stream of vitriol with people

saying maybe get to rehab and get back on the hill. you know that's what you're getting paid for. at 31 he thought his career was over but upton was no stranger to criticism. she too had been a lightning rod for critics attacked on social media for being fat, upton said when someone attacked me i knew i was living my life a healthy way. those comments mean nothing. she taught verlander the importance of knowing your own body and persuaded him to see a new doctor and verlander says she pulled him through. she was someone i could talk to. base dli -- basically a therapist. somebody i could trust with worries about my career, worries about can i make it, worries about what i'm going through to get back. upton says it was all about instincts. as a woman you learn to always question everything everyone is telling you. my industry, my perspective of things, we can't depend on anyone. everything is our responsibility. now back on top of his game, verlander says simply about his wife, she was what i needed. with those hardships behind them justin and kate are now taking on a new adventure, the couple announced just last month they are now expecting their first child. >> very excited about that.

blood pressure directly translates to risk of heart attack, stroke and death. that's what the study looked at. what they found is people with high sodium intakeeir ri stroke decreased their risk of heart attack and death with the highest amounts. again, this is going to be fraught with a lot of controversy. we hear lower sodium all the time. >> you can read this as you want and people will say do i need more salt? >> not so fast. i want to explain why. there's something called a j-shaped curve and not "j" for jennifer. what study after study has found is people over here who take no or little sodium in their diet and people over here who eat very high amounts of sodium have the highest risk of death, stroke and heart attack. people in this middle area, they're fine. so, again, where that number is, whether it's 1,500 milligrams a

day which is what the american heart association recommends or 2,000 or 3,000, which, by the way, we'respns ron. this is not a lot of salt and most of it, as you know is packed into our food without us knowing. >> i know. i'm always surprised when i look at the packaging. i didn't realize how much was in there. >> so in terms of food -- >> here's my recommendations, okay, because people will hear it and be confused. if you have congestive heart failure or kidney disease, absolutely you need to speak to your doctor and if possible a nutritionist about sodium in your diet. all other people, read those labels. look at the sodium in everything you're eating. you'll be surprised how high it is. try spices on your food instead of sodium. eating out ask for sauces and dressings on the side and use with discretion. the last thing, this is the we never hear about it but

returned. the seller retailer looked a l . let's box it back up and sell it at a discount. manufacturer refurbished means they inspected it and might have replaced a part and then they often will give you a full year warranty. so that is a lot safer. >> big difference. >> a lot safer. >> so what tech products should you buy refurbished and how much can you save? >> you can save quite a significant amount, so let's look at phones to start with because that's a great thing to buy. remember, we're talking about buying for students. they'll crack that screen so fast. >> from experience, i know that with my kids, yeah. >> always. so, what you want to do is let's talk about the iphone first. we have an iphone 7. it retails for $549 but you can get it refurbished from apple with a new battery and a year warranty for $499. that's 50 bucks off. about 10%. that's pretty good. if you're willing to take the gamble and buy a seller refurb

math. >> you're doing good with it. >> roughly 115 bucks off. so what's great about this is that your kid is going to ding this up anyway in their backpacks. so if it has a couple of scuff mark, no big deal. and the other thing is that, you know, you might not be able to get the exact specifications you want, but close enough and you got big savings. >> the scuff marks add character. >> that's right. >> that's what that is. now, what should you be cautious about buying refurbished? >> well, if this tv doesn't give you an indication, holy cow, look at the crack on this thing. we don't know if it happened in transit to the park or in transit from the seller. that's the point. big huge tvs in big boxes going back and forth when somebody sends it back, more opportunity to break in the box. >> this is the going back to school segment, sending your kid back to school like a boss.
