good morning, bay area. let's get up and get going. >> this is abc 7 mornings. >> good morning. it is august 11th. i'm kate larson in for chris nguyen today. we have meteorologist frances dinglasan in for lisa arjen. i've been saying it all morning, but we have good news. >> we have good air quality and gorgeous weather ahead. here's a look at live doppler 7 and lots of clear skies, and clouds along the peninsula coast and here is a good shot of the go bridge. it's looking clear out there right now. sunrise at 6:21. temperatures in the 50s and 60s. the breeze will peck ick up thi afternoon andithimproved air quality expect cooler temperatures inland and upper 70s at the coast and upper 50s and lots of sunshine.

sun sets at 8:07. we have a great weekend ahead and i'll let you know about some temperature drops coming up in the seven-day forecast. kate? >> thanks, frances. >> police in richmond are investigating some sort of incident involving multiple cars. it happened last night around 10:00 on 13th street. it is not totally clear what happened. several evidence markers are on the ground as officer investigate the scene. we have the police department for the details. a mechanic who stole an empty lave alaska airlines jet is dead. the large turboprop plane was doing stunts. officials say a horizon airline ground employee who was suicidal stole the plane. norad responded with f-15 fighter jets. the plane started to nosedive and crashed off an island on pugit sound. the horizon air line coo shared this statement.

residents of paradise valley retirement community making the best of a scary time. >> we were sitting down to have dinner and then they told us to evacuate and we just sat in the auditorium down there until they told us to come here. >> not far away, flames from this ferocious grass fire were still on the move. >> cal fire says one structure was lost and it's still unknown if it was a home. one neighborhood in vacaville was also under evacuation orders and that order has been lifted and it is still unknown how this fire started. in fairfield, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> as the first evacuations were ordered for that fire. weigh sent out an alert, doin load the abc 7 news app and push alerts. 46-year-old officer kirk griess was killed during a traffic stop on interstate 80 in fairfield yesterday. abc 7 news anchor eric thomas has that story. >> a solemn procession ofolic

motorcle led tartheodf e fallene solano county coroner's office. kirk griess, a former marine, spent 19 years with the highway patrol, 16 working out of the fairfield office. >> today is a tough day. it's a tough day for the california highway patrol. >> dispatchers began getting frantic calls from minu manuel campos parkway. a chp motor officer that was hit by a vehicle while he was on a traffic stop. >> indeed, griess had pulled over the driver of a saturn and moments later disaster. >> for unknown reasons the driver of a three-quarter ton pickup left the main portion of ou struck officer lled on to the griess. >> chp in progress on chp officer at this time. copy. cpr in progress on chp officer. >> griess wasn't breathing and

both he and the driver were rushed to north bay m where bot pronounced dead. immediately chp officers and their law enforcement colleagues rushed in to give their condolences to grieving officers and family. ? he was the ultimate public servant. he loved what he did and he loved being a chp officer and loved being a chp motor officer and he'll be dearly missed. >> a 49-year-old man from vallejo. officer griess was said to be active in his community and schools and leaves behind a wife and three children. in fairfield, eric thomas, abc 7 news. >> that's so tough. show your support for the chp and the fallen officer through had facebook badge that we created with the abc 7 facebook page and you can share it that way. a construction worker was seriously injured on the job in san francisco. abc 7 news was there when emergency crews responded to the

westportal muni tunnel job yesterday after a steel beam hit a worker. it happened at 5:00 p.m. and work had to be stopped. the worker was transported to san francisco general with serious injuries. >> community groups hope a proposed plan in one of the neighborhoods will employ local residents for terns of thousands of jobs. >> the central plan will create 8,000 more homes and more than 33,000 jobs over the next 20 years. those jobs include security guards, custodians, engineers and the board of supervisors will discuss the proposal next month when it returns from summer recess. happening today the public can get its first look inside san francisco's new sales force transit center as officials get readyir bvi. one, yay! congratulations, everybody! >> yesterday san francisco dignitaries took part in an official ribbon cutting ceremony and mayor london breed says she

omarosa manigault newman. she is rep called president trump a racist, misogynist and bigot. the white house is accusing her of false attacks. here's abc news reporter david wright. >> tonight, the trump administration is slamming a new book by former white house adviser and celebrity apprentice contestant omarosa manigault-newman. >> omarosa has to go. you're fired. o cf1 o >> long since fired from both posts, omarosa now describes trump as a racist, misogynist and bigot, according to "the washington post" which received an advanced cope of the book "unhinged." it's sad that a disgruntled former white house employee is trying to profit off these false attacks and even worse, that the media would now give her a platform. omarosa was the highest ranking african-american to serve on the white house staff. since then she's dished about her experience on "big brother".

conway's husband who is half filipino. the allegation is not credible and indeed is ridiculous. david wright, abc news. now an accuweather update from abc 7 mornings. >> good morning, i'm meteorologist frances dinglasan and we are waking up to clear skies around the bay area and live doppler 7 and the satellite image along the peninsula coast right now, and i want to show you and pull out a little bit what's going on. we have post tropical storm john. this is going to drive some high-level clouds into the bay area over the next couple of days and also we have the trough moving in and that will cool temperatures down a little bit tomorrow. the red flag warning in effect until tonight, 11:00. we could see gusty conditions, up to 30 miles per hour. again, this is for the areas clear and the lake county and surrounding areas like the carr fire and the redding area and humidity in the afternoon and even though the gusts will dry down and we'll still see hot and

dry conditions throughout the week. this live shot from the east bay hills shows haze out there, but air quality has much improved through the weekend and in fact, it will be good today and tomorrow and that's going to be good air quality throughout the bay area from the north bay to santa clara valley and check out this pretty shot as well from the tower in san francisco. temperatures have been really mild this morning and in san francisco, oakland, 57 and half moon bay at 50 degrees and this time we're looking from our rooftop camera towards the bay bridge and it's pretty calm right now and it will pick up this afternoon and that's what will keep things cool especially at the beaches and napa 61 and in the 60s right now. and our forecast animation shows we could still see some clouds move in during the 7:00 hour, but it will pull back very quickly into the afternoon and we'll see lots of clear skies,

plenty of sunshine even into the evening and we'll start to see some clouds move in again, but clear in san francisco. highs today will range from 60s at the coast to low 90s inland. so look for a high of 61 in half moon bay and san rafael, and santa rosa, 88 near the fires and lake port, 97 and fremont comfortable at 78 degrees and san jose, nice and warm, 83 degrees and we'll see low 90s through concord, antioch, livermore and morgan hill. if you are headed to outside lands today you'll get sunshine earlier and mostly sunny by noon and brighter skies throughout the afternoon and still breezy this afternoon and temperatures will be dropping pretty quickly in the evening hours and i'll still grab a jacket and you will need one in san francisco. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast and slightly cooler temperatures with lots of sunshine and a little bit of clouds along the coast, but

he's saying about the whole ordeal. see you soon. >> medical services are about to expand dramatically in san francisco's mission district. sutter health is about to open its st. louis hospital which will be renamed mission bernell campus later this month. it includes new private maternity rooms with the tubs as well as high-tech innovations and it will also mean a jump in available emergency room beds for patients in and around the mission. we're a community hospital and we have a very busy emergency department. our emergency department at this campus has 16 bays and it's about four times the size of our current emergency department. the community will absolutely love it. >> the hospital says it expects to coordinate with zuckerberg, san francisco general to handle er overloads on their busy days and sutter is alsong ready to open another new hospital on van nes avenue in san francisco, as well. it's hard to imagine that a child could be affected by

arthritis, but it turns out that thousands of kids suffer with this painful illness every single day. fortunately, they can talk about their condition with others just like them at camp arroyo. it's a free summer camp provided by the taylor family foundation. abc 7 news anchor cheryl jennings has the story from livermore. >> what do you think, ladies? >> therapy dogs like charlie bring so much joy to these girls and boys. you wouldn't know it to look at their smiling faces, but they live with debilitating disorders that affect their immune systems including arthritis. they're shocking. the disorders affect nearly 300,000 children under the age of 16 in the united states. nd 11.ildren i >> i've had mine since i was 2. >> what is it like to have an auto immune disease. >> well, times it's hard because not a lot of your family and thf us have the same issues so it's

really fun. >> i jumped on a swing set and then i sprained my knee and then it kept hurting and it was more than an injury. >> sometimes when you're sick your joints attack themselves and it makes it hard to move and do stuff. >> wherever you have it it just hurts. i used to have it in my ankles and now i have it in my knees, my fingers and my back. >> i have juvenile arthritis which is like kind of something in the joint which it can swell up sometimes, and i have it in my knees and my ankles. >> what do you have to do to manage your condition? >> i take weekly shots which i'm picking enbrel right ♪ ♪ >> the kids don't let their it comes to camp activities. they're here with the program called camp milagros which has been around for 17 years and some of those original campers are now back as junior

counselors. >> it is really nice to be able to connect with the kids because i've been in their shoes. i know exactly what it's like to go to school and have to explain to teachers that you're suffering from a chronic illness. i remember my second year at camp milagros. my foot was super swollen and now i'm up moving with the kids and stuff and i wouldn't be able to be in this position if it weren't for the help of the doctors. >> camp milagros always has a medical team at camp who volunteer their time including a pediatric rheumatologist with lucille hospital stanford. >> they have medications, sometimes injections and you know, they aren't comfortable or parents aren't comfortable sending their kids to a camp where they might not have oversight. >> i use it as an opportunity to remind themha are just regular kids and their arthritis is a small piece of their pie and they can do anything and everything other kids do.

>> the camp is free and provided by the taylor family foundation which was founded by elaine taylor to help children with life-threatening and life-altering conditions and the foundation can use help all year round. >> donations, cash donations because that's how we fund the program, but beyond that there's in-kind donations so it could be anything from food or beverages or toys. >> reporter: the kids here at arthritis camp are making wonderful memories and some of those memories last all year and some a lifetime, but the one important lesson they learn is that everybody here is treated with kindness and respect. >> everybody here is really nice and everybody here -- i feel like we're all just like a group of friends and family. >> okay, put it down now. cheryl jennings, abc 7 news. >> so great those kids have a place to go. the kids told cheryl that sometimes they do get bullied, you can check sheryl's facebook

is part of a bigger picture. that bigger picture is statewide mutual aid. california years ago realized the need to work together. teamwork is important to protect the community, but we have to do it the right way. we have a working knowledge and we can reduce the impacts of a small disaster, but we need the help of experts. pg&e is an integral part of our emergency response team. they are the industry expert with utilities. whether it is a gas leak or a wire down, just having someone there that deals with this every day is pretty comforting. we each bring something to the table that is unique and that is a specialty. with all of us working together we can keep all these emergencies small. and the fact that we can bring it together and effectively work together is pretty special. they bring their knowledge, their tools and equipment and the proficiency to get the job done. and the whole time i have been in the fire service, pg&e's been there, too. whatever we need whenever we need it. i do count on pg&e to keep our firefighters safe. that's why we ask for their help.

good morning, north bay. let's get up and get going. this is abc 7 mornings. welcome back. i hope you're having a great start to your saturday. we're going to start this half hour with a look at the weather and we've got meteorologist frances dinglasan in for lisa arjen this morning. we've got good news and also changes on the way. >> yeah. right now we're expecting a gorgeous weekend and then we have temperatures dropping midweek. i'll tell you about that in my next report. here's a look at live doppler 7 and we have clear conditions and clear skies over the bay area and check out this gorgeous shot. walnut creek, we can see the sunrise. there are some high-level clouds out there. that is from post tropical storm john and we'll see some high-level clouds over the next couple of days and here's your accuweather 12-hour day planner and during the 7:00 hour,

sunrise just rose. temperatures will be in the 50s and 60s. the afternoon, sea breeze will pick up and that's bringing us improved air quality today and tomorrow and slightly cooler temperatures and inland in the low 90s around the bay and upper 70s around the coast and sun sets at 8:07 with mostly clear conditions and i'll tell you about the cooldown coming up. kate? >> thanks, frances. we have developing news out of solano county. fire crews worked overnight to contain a fast-moving fire out of fairfield. the nelson fire broke out before 5:00 on cherry glen road yesterday. that's near interstate 80. at one point two neighborhoods were evacuated and as of last night all of those evacuation orders were lifted and one structure was lost in the fire and as of the last update from cal fire, the fire burned about 1,000 acres. in southern california, the holy fire in the cleveland national forest is exploding in size and it is now more than

19,000 acres and just 10% contained. crews rushing to keep it from reaching neighborhoods near lake elsinore. yesterday the man accused of starting the fire made his first court appearance. after refusing to come out of his cell on thursday, forrest gordon clark stood before a judge in a bizarre appearance that included several outbursts. >> arson, aggravated arson -- >> that's a lie! >> these are just allegations, sir. >> and correct. >> his bail was set at $1 million. >> there is progress being made on the ferguson fire which is allowing the national park, yosemite national park to re-open part of yosemite valley this tuesday. all main roads into yosemite including highway 140 wille ept which is. 41 wl remain closed to the valley floor for at least another week. now a san francisco jury has

awarded a terminally ill bay area man $289 million from mo monsanto, the company that makes the weed killer round up. arma dates reports it may impact hundreds of similar cases across the country. >> dewayne johnson became overwhelmed with emotion after the jury made its decision. >> i am glad to be here to help after i learned about round up and glyphosate. >> he regularly used round up while working as a grounds keeper for the benicia district. he was diagnosed with non-hodgkins lymphoma. >> did you find with clear evidence that monsanto acted with malice and oppression. >> hundreds of suits targeting round up may now proceed to trial. >> you did something wrong and now you have to pay, and i cannot say how important this case is. >> monsantoruling.

and right now, live doppler 7 and the satellite image showing us lots of clear skies around the bay area and that's very different and as you can see some clouds off the coast, let me show you what's going on in serb la circulation in the next hours. we have tropical storm john will kick up highway-level clouds over the next few days and we also have this trough of low pressure and that's increasing the sea breeze and marine layer and that's why temperatures will come down just a little bit. here is a live shot from the east bay hills and look at how clear it is and these are the mid-level and high-level clouds that post tropical storm john. with the sea breeze it will also improve air quality and it's going to be even better this weekend and we have good air quality from the north bay throughout the bay area down to santa clara valley for the next couple of days and wre outd the golden gate bridge and we see it across the

>> reporter: sierra leone is a poor west african nation that has been beset by civil war and natural disasters. three out of four people live on less than a dollar a day. young people with disabilities are left to live on the streets with no chance to education. thousands of miles away in san jose, abdul provided the inspiration to change that. he was 6 when we first met him as he went through physical therapy after a serious auto accident. his father wanted to pay forward the kindness he and abdul received. so a foundation in abdul's name was created five years ago to help similar children in his father's native sierra leone. >> it would take $150 to pay for one child for an entire school year, inclusive book, texts, uniform and transportation. >> he started with 25 children. he's now paying school expenses for 62. he hopes the number will reach 100. abdul is proud of the contributors. >> they have a big, big heart
