amazinge cro sp to check ou the spectacular new sales force transit center before it officially opens tomorrow. i'm dion lim. thanks for joining us. >> i'm eric thomas. the bay area getting its first look at a new transit hub that could change the way we commute. >> the public got a chance to see san francisco's sales force transit center up close. cornell bernard is live in the city looking at some of the pictures it looks like everyone showed up to see it. >> reporter: yeah, guys. an amazing showing today. in fact, the crowds were so huge

here at the new sales force transit center, police had to limit access to the lobby areas and the roof deck due to overcrowding. safe to say those who did get a look were pretty impressed. the wait is over. the long lines of people who wanted to be the first to get a glimpse inside the new sales force transit center. a few first impressions. >> it's really beautiful. >> i'm really excited. i think it's going to make getting back and forth from the city a lot easier. >> it's been a long time coming. but i think it's well worth it. >> reporter: hours after the public open house began, check out the huge crowds which showed up. the $2.26 billion transit center is impressive. 1 million square feet four levels above ground, connecting commuters with the bay area. a commute game changer for lisa. >> i don't live super close to bart in oakland, so there's a lot of buss that go closer to my house. i'll probably use that now. >> this is going to work for you? >> yeah.

>> reporter: folks were grabbing pictures on the center's cable stay bridge which will allow transit buses to fly over downtown's notorious traffic snarls. >> people are going to cross over six busy streets of traffic during congested hours and never come a street if they come from the east bay, ac transit, or one of the other bus operators. ♪ >> reporter: the crown jewel might be the five-acre rooftop park, a place to hang out and take in the skyline views of the >> it's amazing. it's more than a transportation hub, on it a place where people can gather and it's been a great day so far. >> reporter: talk about letting the sun shine in, one of the coolest features is the steel oculus, a giant skylight which br sunshine and light four stories down. the transit center took eight years to build and commuters endured a lot of traffic headaches. >> it's nice after so many years, construction's finally over. >> reporter: here's a fact, the

sales force transit center is 1,400 feet long. we're told if it stood upright it would be the largest building in san francisco. the first transit buses start rolling through the transit center on a limited sunday schedule tomorrow morning. full service for the monday morning commute. a quick look at the agencies that will offer bus service at the sales force transit center. ac transit, amtrak, greyhound, muni, and west cab will all have hubs. para transit as well. cal train and high speed rail may eventually add service there. a construction worker died after getting hit by a steel beam in san francisco. abc 7 news was at the west portal muni tunnel site where the accident happened. the mayor's office says construction on the project has been halted and cal osha, along with the san francisco police department, are investigating. update on the wildfire in the fairfield area. >> one home did burn in the

blaze in the paradise valley area. the forehas scorched 1,000 acres and it's 65% contained. extra crews are out there to make sure the fire doesn't flare back up. all evacuation orders are lifted, no one was hurt. the cause is under investigation. fire crews keep making headway on the largest wildfire incident in state history. the mendocino complexion. the ranch fire, the larger of the two fires, is 58% contained. it's charred over 276,000 acres and destroyed more than 100 homes. containment is up to 92% on the river fire. cal fire expects to have the mendocino complex fully cop takened by september 1st. a drone giving us a new view of the defer station in redding from the carr fire. it has become one of the most destructive fires in california history wiping out more than 1,000 homes. containment is 55%. firefighters are worried because there's a red flag warning until 11:00 p.m. that means it could be hot and windy which are prime conditions

to feed the flames. the holy fire in orange and riverside counties, containment has jumped from 5% to 29%. the fire has burned more than 21,000 acres and is threatening scores of homes in riverside county. a man has been arrested and accused of deliberately setting that fire. several vacaville streets were shut down this morning while law enforcement agencies escorted the body of chp motorcycle officer kirk grist to vaca hills travel funeral home. the 46-year-old 19-year chp veteran was killed in fairfield when a pickup truck veered off the road, hitting grist and the car he'd pulled over on i-80. the vacaville reporter posted this video of the procession on its facebook page. you can see the dozens of grist fellow officers driving by law enforcement and civilians standing at attention, some wiping away tears. there is a memorial fund set up for officers grist through the chp's credit union.

steal the plane around 7:30 p.m. >> i just want to do a couple maneuvers, see what it can do. >> last night's event is going to push us to learn what we can from this tragedy so that we can assure this does not happen again. >> reporter: fighter jets scrambling from portland to intercept the plane while people on the ground recorded the alarming aerobatics. >> he was able to take the aircraft and get it airborne. we do know he was in communication with air traffic control. >> reporter: air traffic controllers guiding him away from populated areas, hoping to help him land. >> i wouldn't know how to land it, i wasn't really planning on blanding it. >> no prior training. he was not a pilot. he wanted one last hurrah before ending his life. >> reporter: the plane crashes on a small island. >> i've got a lot of people that care about me. it's going to disappoint them to hear that i did this. i would like to apologize to each and every one of them. >> reporter: russell did not survive the fiery crash.

>> so sad and bizarre. two rest of theed in charlottesville, virginia, as the city remembers the events of last year. a group marched through the downtown area earlier today to remember heather heyer, killed during a violent clash between protesters in what was billed as the unite the right rally. heyer was with counter protesters when she was hit by a car. an ohio man has been charged in her death. there are security checkpoints and a heavy police presence in charlottesville this weekend. he's one of the bay area's most famous athletes. barry bonds smashed all kinds of records during his time with the giants. the tribute going on tonight for the slugger. and we are hitting the water. the big competition today for hundreds of bay area swimmers. i'm meteorologist drew tuma. soaked in sunshine with a live look outside at san jose in the south bay. we'll take a look at our sunday in the accuweather forecast ahead.

happening now, the san francisco giants with the salvation army golden state division helping more than 1,200 low-income students get ready for the school year. abc news was in san francisco at the salvation army community center where kids and families picked up backpacks, school supplies and books for free. each year the salvation army partners with the city's library, fire department, and school district to proprovide underserved students the essentials. >> these families come from a place where it's tough to stretch money for school supplies. so it really is a blessing for

so you can breathe easy the next 24 hours. the winds right now, take a look, it is breezy along the coast. 28. the current gust in san francisco. 24 in fair field. half moon bay gusting to 20 miles an hour. the sea breeze, the coast is cool. 60s for half moon bay and san francisco. to the north and inland especially, we are sizzling at this hour. well into the 90s. in fact, close to 100 right now in brentwood. a hot 90 in santa rosa. warm in the south bay at this hour, 83. 87 fremont. along the shoreline mid to low 70s. the call from accuweather the next 12 hours mark reason layer going to be very compressed. what that means, limited is any fog across the coast and through san francisco. a lot of us will have plenty of stars out there and clear skies which is great news. because we have one of the best meteor showers all year happening in our sky overnight

this is one he'll remember. three-putting for par on 17. he is 8 under, 4 off the lead. yesterday's leader gary woodland was 1 over, but he still tied for third thanks to a birdie on 14. adam scott shot the low round 5 under, he's alone in second at 10 under par as he birdies 17. koepka with bogeys on 14 and 15, but saves himself with his par putt on 16. he then birdies 17. he is your leader at 12 under par. he finishes the day 4 under. scott in second, jon rahm, rickie fowler, and woodland in third. tiger woods in the hunt tied for sixth place. just win, baby. that's what the raiders did in their opener against the lions. head coach jon gruden is not exactly celebrating. the raiders beat the lions 16-10 last night. it was gruden's first gate back in 10 years as head coach. the raiders made big plays but mistakes. right here, marshawn lynch peed
