>> announcer: live where you live, this is abc7 news. >> this sight stunned drivers on an east bay highway and brought traffic tonight to a stand still in unincorporated san leandro. >> it even surprised first responders. thanks for joining us. i'm dion lim. >> i'm eric thomas. we begin with news out of alameda county. >> abc7 news reporter is live at the hayward executive airport where the aircraft was originally spu posed to land. >> amanda, the interstate landing even surprised chp officers. >> reporter: eric, dion, it is something you do not expect to see on the side of the road. we are told by the chp that the pilot was planning on landing here from lake tahoe. we're just about 5 miles from where that plane landed. here's something you don't see every day. a small plane on the shoulder of westbound interstate 580 in ash

land, an unincorporated san leandro. >> it's crazy to see something like this. it's unbelievable. i mean, to see something that happens like this where you see a plane land on the freeway like this, it's incredible. >> reporter: at 6:46 saturday afternoon a man and a woman who was his passenger made an emergency landing just before the 164th avenue exit. the pilot told the chp the fuel line snapped and caused the plane to lose pressure. neighbors tell abc7 news they heard just that before witnessing the bizarre landing. >> it was like, boom, like a car was going out of gas or something. then it hit the ground and all i could do was just run and scream and say, a plane is on our freeway. >> reporter: chp sergeant michael nova cell said he's never seen anything like it. the agency released this aerial footage of the aircraft near the right lanes. >> not every day. it's a first in my career. i've seen it throughout the state, but first i know of in the bay area.

>> reporter: the two inside the plane walked away without any injuries and no one was hurt. there was also no damage to surrounding structures, including the freeway or the plane. but, of course, the saturday evening commute through ash land was snarled as crews worked to remove the aircraft from the interstate. >> you can have all the traffic you want in the world as long as nobody gets hurt, you know. that's about it. >> reporter: the investigation into what exactly caused and forced that emergency landing continues tonight. it's still just a miracle that everyone walked away without a scratch. i'm live in high ward tonight, amanda del castillo, abc7 news. >> thank you very much. seattle's airport, we heard for the first time from the family who say they are in shock. the horizon air employee who stole the aircraft and later crashed it is dead. one of his friends read a statement from the family saying, bibo, that's russell's nickname, was warm, kind and

right now. >> reporter: at the controls, 29-year-old richard russell a horizon airlines baggage handler, he passed background checks and had worked for horizon 3 1/2 years, even posting about his job on youtube. >> i'm a ground service agent. that means i lift a lot of bags. >> reporter: f-15 fighters scramble from portland, flying faster than the speed of sound, intercepting russell south of seattle. they are prepared to shoot him down as controllers try to talk him down. >> all right, rich, let's try and land that airplane safely and not hurt anybody on the ground. >> i don't know, man. i don't know. i don't want to. i was kind of hoping that was going to be it. >> reporter: 75 minutes after take off, the plane crashes into flames on a small island. russell is killed. >> there are a lot of people that care about me, and it's going to disappoint them that i did this. i would like to apologize to each and every one of them. >> reporter: commercial airplanes do not have door locks or ignition keys. experts say they can be easily

started using a checklist. but tonight there are big questions about how russell was able to learn just enough to get that plane off the ground and why. the pierce county sheriff described russell as suicidal. the fbi said this does not appear to be terrorism, but it is a big red flag for aviation security. however, the airline says it's still too early to talk about whether security procedures need to be beefed up. clayton sandell, abc news, seattle. >> united airlines passengers faced delays for several hours today due to a problem with one of its computer systems. abc7 news was inside terminal 3 at san francisco international airport. that's where customers learned if their flights would be late and how united would help them. sfo happens to bepi alots begh . >> we have new details now following an accident that killed a construction worker in san francisco. crews will resume work to upgrade muni's twin peaks tunnel. abc7 news was at muni's westportal station after a steel

beam fell on a worker inside the tunnel. officials immediately shutdown the job site. he was rushed to a trauma center. he worked for an oakland based company. both san francisco police and cal osha are investigating yesterday's tragedy. >> crews are making good progress in their battle against a wildfire in the fairfield area. crews have now stopped the fires forward progress. flames destroyed a home in paradise valley and 1,000 acres. all eye vak wags orders have been liftd. the largest wildfire in state history mendocino complex has burned more than 320,000 acres and is 67% contaund. it tore through areas of redding and scorched nearly 191,000 acres and is now 57% contained. near yosemite, the ferguson fire is up to 82% containment and just more than 95,500 acres.

chase, make more of what's yours. so many people came to see san francisco's new sales force transit center today. that police had to get involved to keep everyone safe. a free public party lasted for four hours. starting tomorrow, ac transit, muni, west cat links, amtrak and greyhound buses will use this as the new transbay terminal. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard has a look. >> reporter: police turned some people away, limiting access to the new sales force transit centers public open house after a huge crowd showed up. the doors opened at 11:00 a.m. and by noon this was what we saw. a sea of curious spectators wanting to get their first look at the new center. >> it connects sf to the bay, i can tell there's a lot of investment. this is a big deal. i'm impressed. >> reporter: the $2.26 billion

they saw near san leandro tonight. a small plane landed safely along westbound 580 near the 161st avenue. no one was hurt. >> the man accused of stealing and crashing a plane in seattle spoke out tonight. he was described as warm, kind and gentle. russell had access to planes as part of being a baggage handler for the regional carrier horizon air. >> crowds packed the public grand opening of the sales force transit center in downtown san francisco. at one point police had to turn visitors away. commuter buses from several agencies will start using the center tomorrow. many people also enjoyed their first look at the massive rooftop park. security is tight and police are already on alert in preparation for rallies and possible violence tomorrow in charlottesville, virginia and in washington, d.c. sunday marks the one-year anniversary of a violent

clash -- crash that kill heather heyer. abc news reporter heather hernandez has the story. >> reporter: tight security in charlottesville, virginia on saturday. the governor declaring a state of emergency hoping to avoid a repeat of last year when protests turned deadly. police blocking off streets, mobilizing hundreds of officers preparing for sunday's events. jason kessler, one of the organizers of last year's unite the right event, said he is not a racist. calling himself a civil rights advocate for white people. >> white people are about to become a minority in both the united states and europe. i think we are facing epidemic levels of anti-white discrimination. >> reporter: this year the unite in lafayette park in front of the white house on sunday. president trump criticized for his response to the violence last year. today tweeting, the riots in charlottesville a year ago resulted in senseless death and division. we must come together as a nation. i condemn all types of racism and acts of violence.

shoreline. some warmer spots as you move away from the coast like concord, antioch, even san jose will kind of hold in the low 60s the next 12 hours. but nice viewing conditions tonight. one of the best meteor showers all year happened this weekend. the percy meteor shower is underway. so if you look towards the northeastern horizon, you can see up to 50 meteors an hour. and the best viewing is pretty much over the next five hours or so. so you want to move away from city lights if you can. make your eyes adjust to the darkness. takes about 20 minutes in. you should see a couple of meteors across the night sky. it will be nice to see that, even early tomorrow morning. highs sunday afternoon will be breezy once again. 10 to 20 miles an hour. 67 the high in san francisco, about 92, though, in livermore. 86 in san jose and santa rosa about 88 degrees. the beach forecast looking pretty nice. sunnier skies in the afternoon, but that u.v. index is running very high. santa cruz really comfortable at 72. ocean water temperature sitting
