everyone except at the beaches. it will be breezy this afternoon, and that onshore flow helps to bring temperatures down a little bit from yesterday. but conditions will be similar. inland areas in the low 90s around the bay, upper 70s. and 60s at the coast. the sun sets at 8:05. clouds move in overnight. and we have cooler conditions in store coming up, carolyn. >> thank you, frances. developing news in walnut creek where two people are dead. three others are in critical condition following an accident on highway 24. it happened just before 4:00 this morning. the highway patrol says a honda civic veered off the highway and landed on the street below. two 28-year-old men were pronounced dead at the scene. three 18-year-old women including the driver suffered minor or rather major injuries. officers have arrested the driver on multiple counts of felony manslaughter and felony

dui. alcohol is also blamed for a fatal overnight accident on interstate 880 in oakland just about 2:30 this morning near the 66th avenue exit. chp says two cars were involved. officers say one driver has been arrested for dui. this is his fourth such arrest, they say. and he was driving on a suspended license. a pilot and his passenger are safe this morning after landing on an east bay highway, bringing traffic to a standstill. dash cam video obtained by abc 7 news overnight shows the plane landing on interstate 580 in unincorporated ogi supposed to land at the hayward executive airport. abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo has more. >> reporter: here is something you don't see every day. in unincorporated san leandro,

it's crazy to see something like this. >> to see a plane land on the freeway like th it's incredible. >> reporter: at 6:46 saturday afternoon, a man and a woman who was his passenger made an emergency landing just before the 164th avenue exit. the pilot told chp the fuel line snapped and caused the plane to lose pressure. >> it was like, boom. a car was going out of gas or something. then it hit the ground. and all i could do was just run and scream and say, a plane is on our freeway. >> reporter: chp sergeant michael novosel said he's never seen anything like it. the airline released footage of the plane in the lanes. >> it's the first in my career. >> reporter: the two inside the plane walked away without any injuries and no one was hurt. there was no damage to surrounding structures including the freeway or the plane. of course the saturday evening

commute through ashland was snarled as crews worked to remove the aircraft from the interstate. >> you can have all the traffic you want in the world, as long as nobody gets hurt. and, you know, that's about it. >> reporter: the investigation into exactly what forced that emergency landing is still under way. it's just a miracle that everyone walked away without a scratch. in hayward, i'm amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. developing news on the theft of a plane at seattle's pareair. we're hearing for the first time from the baggage handler's family who say there is shock at what he did. investigators say richard russell is the horizon air employee who stole the aircraft and later crashed it, killing himself. one of his friends read a statement from the family. the family said beebo, russell's nickname, was warm, kind, and gentle. >> we are devastated by these events and jesus is truly the only one holding this family together right now. without him, we would be

hopeless. as the voice recordings show, beebo's intent was not to harm anyone. he was right in saying there are so many people who have loved him. >> federal investigators say russell did not have a pilot's license. they're trying to determine how he gained access to the plane. experts say the incident will likely prompt a major review of airport security measures. united airlines is apologizing to passengers for flight delays it blames on a problem with one of its computer systems. abc 7 news was inside terminal 3 at san francisco international airport yesterday, where passengers were waiting for word on when their flights would leave. some delays were several hours long. sfo happens to be a major hub for united. the airline says a slowdown of the system that provides information to pilots before their flights depart caused that issue. >> wk isumg on thewin

ac transit sent out photos of its first buses arriving this morning. muni, west cat links, amtrak, and greyhound buses will also be using that center. yesterday, so many people went to see this new place that police had to get involved to keep everyone safe. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard has a look. >> reporter: police turned some people away, limiting access to the new salesforce transit center's public open house, after huge crowds showed up. this was what we saw, a sea of curious spectators wanting to get their first look at the new center. >> it connects sf to the bay. i can tell there's been a lot of investment. this is a really big deal, i'm impressed. >> reporter: the $2.26 billion transit center is impressive. 1 million square feet, four levels above ground, connecting commuters with the bay area. a commute game changer for lisa. >> i don't live super close to b.a.r.t. in oakland. i'll probably choose to use that

you can also look up information like where to find your bus and what else is open at the center. janet jackson will be headlining the closing day of th outside lands music festival in san francisco. the three-day event has been another major hit with popular music groups like florence and the machine. ♪ abc 7 news was at golden gate park where some 200,000 people took part in the 11th annual event, offering eight stages of simultaneous live music from different genres. >> everybody is just out here to have a good time and enjoy three days and put everything aside in life. not politics or anything like that, just come out and have a good time and listen to good music. >> and as far as miss jackson, well, janet posted on twitter that she is f meychging concertn their lots. the money they raise will go towards supporting their school

programs. slightly cooler weather expected today. here is live doppler 7 and the satellite image. we've got some more cloud cover all along the coast right now, but lots of clear skies and priority sunshine expected later on for inland areas. a live shot of the golden gate bridge, you see the low clouds and the marine layer. it will help cool us down and bring us good air quality all around the bay area, north bay down to santa clara valley. in addition to that, we have higher containment of the fires and the stronger onshore breeze. as we look at pier 39, a live shot of the sea lions basking in the sunshine. it's 60 degrees in san francisco, oakland 64. san jose 68. morgan hill warmer at 72. half moon bay pretty chilly with limited visibility down to one mile due to the fog, 55 degrees there. looking from san rafael, blue skies. santa rosa, 63, as well as napa.

fairfield, temperatures climb, 69 degrees. 70 degrees in livermore. throughout the day, this afternoon it will clear inland. look at all those clouds, just still sticking along the peninsula coast from san francisco as you make your way down. it will clear later on in santa cruz, they'll get some sunshine as well. overnight, if you're planning to see the perseid meteor showers, stay away from the coast and away from city lights, because the fog will move back in across san francisco and into parts of the east bay. highs today are just a little bit cooler compared to yesterday. some spots holding fairly steady. we'll see clouds at the coast again, lots of sunshine inland, even hazy conditions of course due to some of the wildfires in parts of the north bay and interior valleys. look for a nice 88 degrees in santa rose is a -- santa rosa.

warmest inland spots in low 90s. if you're heading to outside lands, grab a jacket. temperatures will climb to the mid-60s. it will be breezy this afternoon. the sea breeze will drive temperatures down. by the end of the concert it will be chilly, 56 degrees. overnight lows will be in the 50s tonight with lots of fog spilling in from the coast. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. a breezy afternoon, but temperatures still warm inland. low 90s. around the bay, really comfortable, upper 70s. at the coast, cool, in the 60s. tomorrow morning we start off with some fog again and sunshine. but temperatures will continue to drop into the middle of the week, where we'll be below average. then high pressure builds will warm back up. we'll see a summer spread, and we'll be possibly near 100 degrees again next weekend, so hot inland. no, really. i'm glad it's a little bit

the virus has been found in two dead birds and in several mosquitoes. west nile virus typically peaks in august and september according to health officials. four of the nine bay area counties have reported west nile virus activity this year. next month, climate experts from all over the world will dscend here on the bay area for the action climate summit. right now, visitors to san francisco's exploratorium can get a jump on that summit with a special exhibit that includes a tour of a high tech research ship. here is abc 7 news anchor dan ashley. >> reporter: for much of the year, the research ship "rubin lasker" thi wk it's docke at the exploratorium. there's intense interest in the crew's work. >> everybody is paying attention to the climate, changing oceans,

>> announcer: good morning east bay. let's get up and get going. this is "abc 7 mornings." welcome back, everyone. we're starting this half hour with a look at the weather with our meteorologist frances dinglasan in for lisa. >> hi, carolyn, good morning, everybody. clouds are already pulling back to the coast. here is live doppler 7 and the satellite image. we've got coastal clouds in parts of the north bay and along the peninsula, even parts of the bay as well. you can see it in this live shot from emeryville looking toward san francisco. clear skies will prevail for the rest of us. this morning, we're dealing with the coastal clouds in the next hour. temperatures in the 50s and 60s. lots of sunshine this afternoon. but it will be breezy, about 10 to 25 miles per hour. and inland areas are going to be a little bit cooler compared to yesterday. so low 90s for you there, around the bay 70s, really comfortable. at the coast, in the 60s. the sun sets at 8:05. the fog will move back in. the cooling trend continues. i'll let you now for how long, coming up, carolyn. >> frances, thank you.

a pilot and his passenger are safe this morning after landing on an east bay highway. dash cam video shows the plane landing last night on interstate 580 in ashland, that's in unincorporated san leandro. the plane was originally supposed to land at the hayward executive airport. the pilot told the chp the fuel line snapped and caused the plane to lose pressure. you can hear just how calm he was from air traffic audio. >> we've got an engine issue here. we're probably going to try to get off of the road. i'm not familiar with the roads here but i'm going to choose one and i'll let you know. >> wow. both the pilot and his passenger walked away without any injuries. there was also no damage to surrounding structures. you heard the pilot was calm, but neighbors described the bizarre landing. >> it was like, boom, like a car was going out of gas or something. then it hit the ground. and all i could do was just run

and scream and say, a plane is on our freeway. >> the investigation into what exactly forced that emergency landing is now w to developing news about that airline employee who stole a plane from seattle. officials say 29-year-old richard russell did not have a pilot's license but did have clearance to be in secure areas of the airport. abc 7 news reporter clayton sandell has more. >> reporter: this morning we're learning more about that rogue pilot and his joyride in a stolen airliner. >> oh, my god, oh, my god. is he okay? >> reporter: his alarmingary owe batt -- alarming aerobaticsaerobatet common died comm commandeered the plane.

>> i don't want to, i was kind of hoping that was going to be it. >> reporter: the flight ended in a fiery crash. authorities say russell passed multiple background checks to work at horizon but not not have a pilot's license. a neighbor spoke to him hours before his final flight and said he seemed well-adjusted. >> he wasn't a bad person. he's a loving, kind person, very nice. sad and shocking. >> reporter: authorities say russell was suicidal. >> there's a lot of people that care about me and it's going to disappoint them that i did this. i would like to apologize to each and every one of them. just a broken guy, got a few screws loose, i guess. >> reporter: his family issuing this statement overnight. >> we are stunned and heartbroken. beebo was a warm, compassionate man. he was a faithful husband, a loving son and a good friend. >> reporter: airline officials say of course russell was allowed to be around airplanes

as part of his job. but they say they are taking a look at whether security procedures need to be changing. clayton sandell, abc news, seattle. a highway patrol officer was killed in a crash on interstate 80 80. he died on friday. the officer was a 19-year veteran of the department. some vacaville streets were shut down yesterday as law enforcement officers escorted his body to the funeral home. evacuations. the nelson fire burned 2,100 acres and destroyed a home in paradise valley since it began friday. all evacuation orders have now been lifted. crews are still watching for any flare-ups. the largest wildfire in state history, the mendocino complex, has burned more than 328,000 acres. it's now 67% contained. the carr fire that tore through areas of redding has scorched nearly 191,000 acres. it's now 57% contained. near yosemite, the ferguson fire is 82% contained. it's burned almost 96,000 acres. yosemite valley is expected to reopen to visitors on tuesday. president trump lashed out at one of his favorite targets, the media, during an event hosting a group of bikers at his golf course in new jersey. >> does everybody like the press?

keep the original name just for historical purposes. >> reporter: banners proclaiming the east cut pay homage to history, mentioning the gold rsh and old coffee manufacturers in the neighborhood. >> i'm fine with it. >> do they allow the residents around here to vote on it? how did they decide? >> reporter: actually a community benefit district made up of about 4,500 property owners, business, and residential, came up with the name. andrew robinson is executive director. >> the city doesn't actually get involved in the naming of neighborhoods, but they're organic and derived from the community. >> reporter: it's described as one of san francisco's most forward thinking and hospitable neighborhoods. but here's the question: what does "east cut" mean? >> i don't really know. >> it's a historic reference to the second street cut, which was a leveling of what then was

now to new developments in the search for missing college student mollie tibbetts. the reward for information to find her has risen to more than $330,000, thanks to over 200 individual donors. tibbetts is a 20-year-old college student in iowa. but she spent part of her childhood in oakland. she was reported missing over three weeks ago. last seen going for a jog. investigators have not named any suspects. nasa has launched a mission to get closer than it's ever been to the sun, after a 24-hour delay the mission launched early this morning. >> three, two, one, zero. liftoff of the might delta iv

but lots of clearing everywhere else. we'll see plenty of sunshine later on. in san francisco, we still see some of the low clouds pushing in. san francisco is currently 60, oakland 64. heininland, looking out towards mt. diablo, clear and sunny and it will warm up again today. santa rosa, already 67 right now. in fact concord is 70 degrees. so today is going to be much like yesterday. but that onshore flow will continue to cool temperatures a few degrees. look for a high of 86 in san jose with plenty of sunshine. mid-90s as well through morgan hill and gilroy. on the lower part of the peninsula, a great day to head to the menlo charity horse show in atherton. upper 70s with plenty of sunshine. if you're heading to the beaches, grab a jacket. sweater weather there, it's going to be cloudy and cool with that sea breeze picking up in the afternoon. sunset district, 64.

da daly city, 63. lots of 80s in the north bay. petalu petaluma, 84. napa, 86. farther north we'll still see hazy skies due to the wildfires. in the east bay, t-shirt and shorts weather, comfortable, 70s for most everyone. berkeley, 74. fremont warmer as we head south, 80 degrees. interior valleys will see low 90s today with some hazy conditions the farther east you are like in brentwood. 90 in walnut creek and in san ramon. i want to tell you what you can expect from the week ahead. in livermore, average highs 88. we're above average. temperatures will drop monday. tuesday and wednesday will likely be the coolest days, as onshore flow increases. high pressure builds inland. then we'll have an offshore flow, allowing temperatures to warm up with the land breeze. by next weekend we could be near 100 degrees in some of our warmest locations.

the salvation army is helping more than inco f the new school year. abc 7 news was in san francisco at th salvation army community center, where kids and their families picked up backpacks and filled them with schl supplies and books, all for free. the salvation army partners with the city's library, fire department, and school district to provide underserved students classroom essentials. >> these families come from a place where it's tough for them to stretch money for even little things like school supplies. and so it really is a blessing
