good morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm maggie rulli in for diane macedo. investigators looking into the fatal crash of that stolen airliner have retrieved the flight recorder. the secret white house tapes. omarosa has released a recording of her firing. she claims she taped it in the situation room and felt threatened by the white house chief of staff and says there's plenty more where that came from. paul manafort's trial entering a third and possibly final week. he's charged with 18 banking and tax crimes.

a frightening series of aerial acrobatics. many people watching in astonishment before it crashed. >> the fbi takes the lead in the investigation into how and why richard russell went on the joy ride. here is clayton sandell. >> reporter: we're learning more about the rogue pilot and his joyride in a stolen airliner. >> oh, my god, oh, my god. is he okay? >> reporter: his alarming aerobatics. no ordinary air show. >> holy [ bleep ], holy [ bleep ]. >> reporter: at the controls, 29-year-old richard russell, a member of the airlines' ground crew, commandeering the plane, surrounded by fighter jets ready to shoot him down as controllers tried to talk him down. >> all right, rich, let's try to land that plane safely. >> i don't want to. i was kind of hoping that was

going to be it. >> reporter: the flight ended in a fiery crash. authorities say russell passed multiple background checks to work at horizon but did not have a pilot's license. >> commercial aircraft are complex machines, so i don't know how he achieved the experience that he did. >> reporter: russell was married, he worked for horizon three and a half years, posting about it on youtube. >> i'm a ground service agent. that means i lift a lot of bags. >> reporter: his neighbor spoke to him hours before his fatal flight and says he seemed well-adjusted. >> he wasn't a bad person. he's a loving, kind person. very nice. sad and shock. >> reporter: but authorities say russell was suicidal. he told controllers he was a broken man. >> i've got a lot of people that care about me, it's going to disappoint them. i would like to apologize to each and every one of them. just a broken guy. got a few screws loose, i guess. >> reporter: the ones who cared

about him the most, his family, issuing this statement. >> we are stunned and heartbroken. bebo was a loving son and good friend. >> reporter: and airline officials say he was allowed to be around airplanes as part of his job but they are taking a look at whether security procedures a need to be changed. clayton sandell, abc nows, seattle. >> nobody knew he had these sort of situations before friday. now to the tense standoff outside the white house. one year after the deadly violence in charlottesville, virginia, on one side, jason kessler and members of the unite the right rally. on the other, hundreds of protesters calling for an end to white supremacists and neo-naziism and racism. in the middle, police trying to prevent a repeat of last year's violence. here's abc's david wright. >> reporter: at the president's doorstep, a backlash that's been

brewing for months. one year after the unite the right protest in charlottesville, some of the same protesters tried to organize an encore, billing it as a civil rights rally for white people. >> i'm focussing on white people, because we don't have civil rights advocates. >> reporter: but they met with fierce resistance. but 2:00 p.m., it was clear the counterprotesters were out in numbers. >> we are not going to stand for hatred and fascism in america. >> reporter: do you think this is going to get violent? >> no, if anybody's going to get violent, it's probably going to be the right. >> the only violence will be in self-defense. >> reporter: multiple agencies trying to keep things calm. the unite the right group arriving by subway. a crowd there to greet them and not in a friendly way. this massive crowd is all people

who are either counterprotesters or police. they far outnumber the protesters themselves. in lafayette park, barricades and a buffer zone kept the two sides far apart. the president in bedminster tweeted that the riots in charlottesville a year ago resulted in senseless death and division. we must come together as a nation. i condemn all types of racism and acts of violence. peace to all americans. at the podium, the organizer of this event. >> i'm not a white nationalist. i've never claimed to be a white nationalist, okay? i'm okay with sharing this country with people from around the world. but if you bring in too many people at once, you're not the same country anymore. that's why a lot of white people feel aggrieved.

>> reporter: thankfully, no real violence. at the end of the day, mother nature intervened. the skies opened up and the crowd has now started to disburse. clearly the police were determined to avoid the mistakes of charlottesville, their focus all day long, keeping the two sides separate and keeping the clashes to a minimum. david wright, washington. keith ellison is denying allegations of domestic abuse as he faces an election tomorrow. he's accused of dragging his ex-girlfriend off a bed while yelling obscenities and sending angry text messages. the woman and her son say there's a tape of the incident. ellison insists there's no tape because it never happened. after six terms in congress he's running for minnesota attorney general. republicans are scrambling to replace chris collins after he gave up his bid for reelection following an indictment for insider trading. he planned to serve out his time and is looking forward to clearing his name.

you saw david out there in the rain in lafayette park in d.c. there's another round of severe weather today. the radar map showing overnight storms stretching from norfolk, virginia to western new york state. severe flooding in parts of the west. these cars were submerged in floodwaters in new jersey. troubled waters creating hazards as well across the country. here's abc's rob marciano. >> reporter: dangerous thunderstorms, soaking the east. millions from florida to new england getting hit again. up to five inches of rain soaking parts of new jersey on saturday, turning this highway into a rushing river. >> oh, my god! those cars are completely under water. >> reporter: the raging floodwaters sweeping away a line of cashes from this dealership. stranding a bride from her

sifting through pieces of plane wreckage. the last stop on a deadly joyride. >> [ bleep ] is he doing over here? >> reporter: the key question, how did richard russell, an airline groundworker with no known pilot's license steal a plane from one of the nation's busiest airports. >> holy [ bleep ] holy [ bleep ]. >> reporter: doing barrel rolls and steep dives. >> there were some maneuvers that were done that were incredible maneuvers. >> reporter: russell, a 29-year-old horizon airlines employee says he doesn't need help flying. >> i've played video games before, so i know what i'm doing a little bit. >> reporter: suggesting russell may have taught himself, using an inexpensive flight simulator. >> today the sad fact is you don't have to go to a terrorist camp to learn how to build a bomb or go to flight school to learn to fly an airplane. >> reporter: he was not a terrorist. >> just a broken guy, got a few

screws loose i guess. >> reporter: but the idea of a stolen airliner in post 9/11 era is showing a hole in the security system. >> it shows what lessons need to be learned and measures need to be changed. >> reporter: a devastating shock to the people who knew him. >> he was a faithful husband, a loving son and a good friend. >> reporter: government security experts tell us, the system isn't designed to catch people like russell who appear to have a clean record. the question is, are there mental health warning signs that family and friends may have missed. clayton sandell, abc news, seattle. >> very troubling video there. we're going to move on to severe flooding slamming parts of the country. take a look at the radar. at least 27 people were rescued from flooding waters in south texas. some were stuck on their stranded cars or in trees and had to be rescued by helicopters.

>> extreme flooding caused a mess in massachusetts. we'll go to paul williams for more. >> good morning, kendis, maggie. showers and thunderstorms abundant from d.c. to portland. it's a two-headed monster. tuesday it continues along the entire eastern seaboard. we are expecting monday through wednesday heavy thunderstorms from st. louis, kansas city, chicago. southwest, normal desert heat and for the northwest hot as well. but guess what, because of all the fires, we have reduced air quality, lower visibility. hazy skies from portland, grand junction, sacramento and l.a. and more scattered showers in the center part of the country. staying out west, a break in the weather is helping firefighters battling the historic wildfires in california.
