inches of rain falling just since midnight in eastern pennsylvania. >> reporter: summer soaker. >> it was like a tsunami. >> oh, my goodness. picking up car after car at a new jersey dealership. sending them down a swollen creek, slamming one after another into a bridge. >> they're filled with mud, rocks. >> this is unbelievable. >> reporter: 5 inches of rain falling fast in west caldwell, new jersey. >> oh, my god, those cars are completely under water. >> reporter: at jfk airport here in new york, a fountain erupts inside the airport. north of boston in lynn, massachusetts, drivers forced to abandon their cars after more than 8 inches of rain fell. in jackson, mississippi, 3 inches of rain in just 45 minutes left streets and neighborhoods swamped. in texas, more than two dozen people rescued after a foot of rain, all of this near san antonio where helicopters were

air lifting life jackets to stranded tourists visiting chalk bluff park. you saw the flash flood warnings. how much longer do we have? about a day and a half. binghamton, national weather service just put out a warning that they're going to have the potential for flash flooding. you can see anywhere from three to four inches of rain could fall in some of these pockets. just a quick look of what's happening on the other side of the stalled front, another low. western texas picking up more. eastern oklahoma and northern arkansas also. so flash flooding in many parts of the country. robin? >> all right. ginger, thank you very much. david? the battle between the white house and omarosa manigault newman. the president firing back at omarosa, calling her a, quote, low-life over sensational claims she's making in interviews and in her new book. she's released audio from the moment she says she was fired. secretly recorded inside the white house.

tom llamas is here with us. >> reporter: and good morning to you. she's on a book tour, but it's feeling like omarosa the revenge tour. we're learning on the day she was fired, omarosa walked into one of the most secure and sensitive areas of the white house ready to record. >> reporter: this morning omarosa releasing more secret recordings, this time a phone call she says from the president the day after she was fired. nbc airing the audio. >> omarosa, what's going on? i just saw on the news that you're thinking about leaving. what happened? >> general kelly -- general kelly came to me and said that you guys wanted me to leave. >> no. nobody even told me about it. nobody. you know they run a big operation but i didn't know it. i didn't know that. >> yeah. >> damn it. i don't love you leaving at all. >> reporter: omarosa drawing the wrath of the white house after admitting she also secretly recorded chief of staff john kelly inside the situation room as he was firing her. >> i think it's important to understand that if we make this a friendly departure we can all

be -- you know, you can look at your time here in the white house as a year of service to the nation. and you can go on without any type of difficulty in the future relative to your reputation. >> reporter: omarosa says that's proof she was threatened to keep quiet. the white house says the recording is proof she has no character or integrity. press secretary sarah sanders says the very idea a staff member would sneak a recording device into the white house situation room shows a blatant disregard for our national security. >> if i didn't have these recordings, no one in america would believe me. no one. >> reporter: and, she says there are more alleged recordings at issue. including one she now says she heard. in her new book "unhinged" omarosa claims three people told her about a recording of the president using the "n" word on "the apprentice" set. but she wrote that she never heard it herself. the existence of any such tape has never been proven. but now, the former white house adviser claims she heard it.

>> once i heard it for myself, it was confirmed what i feared the most, that he is truly a racist. >> reporter: omarosa said by the time she heard it, the book could not be updated. she also claims the trump re-election campaign offered her this consulting contract obtained by "the washington post," which promised $15,000 a month in compensation. but she describes it as a hush agreement. the nondisclosure agreement states she could not demean or disparage publicly in any form or through any media the campaign or mr. trump. >> low life, she's a low life. >> reporter: on the campaign trail and even after she was fired, omarosa was a fierce defender of the president. >> i would never sit nor work for someone who i believe to be a racist. >> reporter: for her part,

omarosa is taking some blame for standing by the president's side after he made racially insensitive comments. >> in fact, i had a blind spot when it came to donald trump. i wanted to see the best in him and obviously i failed miserably. >> reporter: the trump campaign is also firing back saying omarosa is now in the business of pedaling propaganda to sell books. the white house has called all of those allegations including the use of the "n" word lies and false allegations. david. >> thank you, tom. we'll dig down deeper with dan abrams. this is in the situation room. it's one of the most secure rooms if not the most secure in the white house. did she violate the law? >> she violated protocols. she violated rules. she may have been a national security threat. and yet, she may not have violated the law. the reason is because, number one, the information she released, at least on the kelly tape, is not classified information. it was just her being fired. and number two, washington, d.c. is a one-party

consent state meaning only one of the two people need to consent in order to make a recording which is what she did. i don't see, at least based on this tape, how what she did is illegal even though it was wrong and a violation of rules. >> it's funny. you and i were saying, it's remarkably clear, the audio on this tape, as well. she says she has many other conversations. is there anything the white house can do to halt these from being made public too. >> i think you have to think about not where the recordings were made but what is on the recordings. i think that's where they potentially could go after her. i think they may try to overclassify now. they may try to classify any conversations with omarosa. >> can they do that? >> well look, you're allowed to classify. that's up to them in terms of what gets classified and what doesn't. there are arguments all the time over classification. they can try now to classify conversations that happened with omarosa so that if she does release future conversations then they can go after her. then they can say, that's classified information. and as a result, that's a violation of the law.

whether it's the right or wrong thing to do is a separate question. when they say they're going to go after her, that's the best i can think of in terms of what they have. >> still startling to think about a conversation being recorded in the situation room. >> oh, i mean, startling. just because it may not be a violation of the law doesn't mean that it's not unbelievable that it actually happened. >> all right, dan abrams with us this morning. thanks, dan. michael? >> thank you, david. now to the dueling demonstrations in the nation's capital. a small group of extremists staging a so-called whites civil rights rally across from the white house, this coming just one year after those deadly demonstrations in charlottesville. they were vastly outnumbered by counter-protesters. david wright has the story. >> reporter: one year after charlottesville is very different scene in the nation's capitol. legions of counter-protesters swarmed the city united against the right. >> i think this is the chance we

have to really show that we as a nation are against racism, bigotry and hatred. >> reporter: some of them masking up for a possible street fight. but unite the right, the group that organized the violent tiki torch march in charlottesville one year ago, failed to gather significant numbers of marchers this year. >> there were a lot of people who were at last year's rally who are very scared this year. they felt like last year, they came to express their point of view. they were attacked. when they fought back they were overly prosecuted. >> reporter: fewer than two dozen of them turned up on the day. as they boarded the subway to ride into town, the police escorts forced them to leave their flag poles behind. lest they be used as cudgels. when they emerged in d.c., a big crowd was there to greet them, and not in a friendly way. this massive crowd is all people who are either counter-protesters or police and

they far outnumber the protestors themselves. in charlottesville a much more peaceful scene than last year. four people were arrested but no fights among the protestors. the mother of heather heyer, the woman killed last year, spoke out. >> my daughter had a mission. it's my job to complete that mission. >> thank you to david wright for bringing us that story. robin. now to the desperate search for a missing teenager in phoenix. 19-year-old kiera bergman was last seen more than a week ago. marcus moore has the latest. >> reporter: robin, good morning. that urgent search is underway for the 19-year-old who was last seen august 4th after leaving her job. bring kiera home is the hashtag being used on social media this morning to raise awareness in this growing search for a beloved teenager. >> everybody out there that has been praying for my daughter to come home and praying for our

family, we are so thankful. we're so overwhelmed. >> reporter: worried friends and family say they have not seen or heard from 19-year-old kiera bergman in more than a week. last seen in her phoenix apartment. her mother deeply concerned for her daughter's safety. she said being out of touch for this long is not like her. >> for her to leave her purse with her wallet and i.d. there at the apartment, that's not normal. that's why i feel there's something not right here. >> reporter: the missing teen originally from san diego moving to phoenix with her boyfriend in march. this morning, police have not identified any suspects. they're asking for the public's help. >> communication with family stopped. that's concerning not only for the family but the investigators. >> i miss my sister and want her to come home. >> reporter: the community holding a vigil leaving flowers at her doorstep and praying for her safe return. >> it's not a vigil for a memorial. it's more of a vigil for hope,

hope that we are going to find her and we are going to bring her home. >> reporter: but you still get a sense of the anguish there. what is so concerning for bergman's family is again, her wallet and i.d. were all left behind in her phoenix-area apartment. but she is nowhere to be found this morning. her family says this is completely out of character for her. robin, they're so worried she's in real danger. they want her home right away. >> absolutely. hopefully she'll be found safe and sound very soon, marcus. just a reminder of all the people who are missing around the country. marcus, thank you. >> thanks, robin. we turn to the uproar around a police beating in baltimore. the police officer seen in this video repeatedly punching a man on the street suspended after the tape surfaced online. the officer has resigned. the police department saying the officer involved in yesterday's incident is no longer with the bpd. the second officer remains on administrative duties. baltimore police say desean mcgrier was known to the officer who can be seen punching mcgrier

in the head and body. all the charges against mcgrier were dropped. we turn to a powerful moment in chicago. the priest who survived that plane crash in mexico where everyone made it out alive, returning to his parish to celebrate his first mass joined by fellow survivors. erielle reshef is here with this story. he said surviving wasn't the only miracle that day. >> reporter: that's right. father esequiel sanchez said the real miracle is how many people risked their lives to save others from the fiery wreckage. the self-described bionic priest bringing together survivors from that crash. a frightening accident that would ultimately become a test of faith. this aeromexico flight crashed during takeoff, strong wind gusts and hail hammering the aircraft. then suddenly everything went dark. miraculously all 99 passengers and 4 crew members escaped, including this man. >> what could you see out of the window?

>> nothing. >> reporter: father esequiel sanchez, one of the 65 americans on board. as he lay in the hospital recovering from several arm fractures in the days after the crash, he jokingly called himself a bionic priest. >> i've become the bionic padre. >> the bionic padre. >> reporter: this weekend he had a happy homecoming where he gave a mass and spoke about the true miracle that occurred that day. survivors rushing back to the plane to help those injured. >> i, as well as other brothers and sisters, were inside that crash. we could have easily ran away as fast as they could. but there were other brothers and sisters inside the plane that went back to help others get out. >> reporter: at the end of the service seven other survivors from the accident invited to join reverend sanchez for a special blessing. that mass was standing room only. father sanchez says he hopes the accident has helped open people's hearts to the possibility that true miracles

>> you hadn't seen that? >> i hadn't seen that. >> it was good stuff. >> stick with me. >> get your sports news from david muir. thanks guys. we have major security concerns after a member of the grounds crew managed to steal a plane from an airport in seattle taking it for a joy ride and then crashing it. the data recorder has been recovered. clayton sandell has the latest for us. good morning, clayton. >> reporter: good morning, robin. truly a bizarre story. investigators hoping those flight recorders offer new clues into how a man with no pilot's license was able to steal an airpo airplane at one of the nation's busiest airports. authorities say richard russell part of the ground crew for horizon air took control of the q-400. >> are you sure he won't hit us? >> reporter: taking to the air, russell performing dangerous stunts, diving nose first, even

flipping upside down. military jets scrambled as people on the ground looked on in horror. >> oh, my god. is he okay? >> reporter: at one point plunging nearly into the water. but then -- >> i was like he's going to crash. what's happening? it was really scary. then all of a sudden it came back up. >> reporter: on the radio russell seemed giddy at times chatting with calm air traffic controllers. >> have you been to the olympics? these guys are gorgeous, holy smokes. i want to do a couple maneuvers before i put her down. >> reporter: telling the crew on the ground he didn't need help flying. >> i played video games. i know what i'm doing. i know how to put the landing gear down. >> reporter: russell never gave much thought about how he would land the plane. >> i wouldn't know how to land it. i wasn't really planning on landing it. >> reporter: with no pilot's license and no known experience piloting, questions about how he could take off and fly a plane like this.

>> there were some maneuvers that were done that were incredible maneuvers with the aircraft. >> reporter: from the sky glimpses of remorse. >> i have a lot of people who care about me. it's going to disappoint them to hear that i did this. i would like to apologize to each and every one of them. >> reporter: the fbi says russell had no ties to terrorism. the airlines says he worked at the airport for three and a half years, even posting humorous videos about his work on seoul. >> look at all those bags. >> reporter: as well as travel pictures with his wife. >> just a broken guy. got a few screws loose, i guess. never knew it until now. >> reporter: a stolen airliner in a post 9/11 era prompting a hard new look at potential security loopholes. >> it could be easy for somebody with an airline employee badge to slip in unnoticed. >> reporter: russell's tragic

joy ride ending in a fiery crash on a remote island 25 miles from the airport. his family stunned and devastated. >> we are stunned and heart broken. he was a warm compassionate man, a faithful husband, a loving son and a good friend. >> reporter: government security experts tell us that the system is not set up to catch a man like russell who apparently passed multiple background checks and had a clean record. the question now is, were there mental health warning signs that were missed. robin. >> clayton, thank you. incredibly sad. joining us now retired colonel steve ganyard. how easy is it to take a plane like this? >> robin, apparently it's not as hard as you might think. an airplane isn't like a car where you have a key and put a key in the ignition and

turn it on and everything works. the door may be locked but most airplanes don't have a lock on the door. if you get to the door, you can get to the cockpit. it's understanding how to start the airplane. that was the difference here. he spent time in a simulator. he had spent time obviously sitting in that cockpit. he knew what he was doing only so far as what he could learn in a book or a computer program. >> what about background checks and mental health screenings of the airport employees? >> to take it down to a baggage handler level, that's probably not very practical. we've seen at least i think four crashes in the last few years where pilots have committed suicide by flying their airplanes into the ground. the pilots go through annual flight physicals and their mental health is screened then. if we can't stop it with pilots, if you have a trusted employee around the airplane who keeps these demons to themselves and has a plan, there's not much we can do. >> what about bigger jetliners? what's the likelihood of someone

doing that with a bigger plane? >> i think it would be harder, robin. this is a fairly simple airplane. the q-400 is a good airplane but it's not that complex. it's easier to start and easier to not get noticed. if it was a 747, that would be obviously a lot harder. this was an airplane that nobody was going to notice moving around on the ramp, where this guy whose job was to be in that airplane, be around that airplane, never raised any suspicions. >> thank you for your insight, steve. david. >> getting a plane in a post 9/11 world is crazy. thanks, robin. we turn to the political candidate in florida facing serious questions about her past, accused of faking her college degree. gio benitez is here with the photo and the clues you found. >> thank you, david. the primaries in florida are two weeks away. now this photo is at the center of this race. melissa howard claiming she has a bachelor of science in marketing. the university saying that

it's basically natural family planning, which is not new, with a new age approach. the woman has to check her basal body temperature every single morning. there's a slight bump in temperature when a woman ovulates. after several months when she inputs more information in the app, you can predict when the woman would be fertile and when she should use protection. not new in its theory. very new in its application. >> i'm glad you pointed that out. how effective sit, jen? >> that's the thing, robin. let's look at the efficacy of some of the popular methods of contracepti contraception. failure rate with condom 17%. the birth control pill, 9%. this app claims 6.5%. the iud is the most effective other than abstinence which is not really a method. so, again, with these methods, people need to understand a

failure can occur. and so a woman, and a couple, should have an idea what she and they would do if they develop an unintended pregnancy. >> what are the benefits compared to the other methods? >> there are some benefits. number one there may be a cost savings. so it could be about $79 a year. there are other cost issues to consider when a woman thinks of other methods. it can be easier. that's also subjective. and for women who are sensitive to hormonal side effects, there are no side effects with this. those could be some benefits. >> and on the flip side, what do you say, the cons. >> the biggest one robin, there is no protection against sexually transmitted infections here. we talk about the risk of an unintended pregnancy. you have to check your temperature daily and there could be mechanical or technical failure, but good option. >> i love how you've put a button it.

cooking tips for college students. chef lisa le lee lee lee lee the author of "100 days of real food on a budget," she's here with dinners you can make in your dorm room. we have a panel of college students, our interns, with us. and i have to ask you guys a question. who would spend $10 on a meal? yeah? who would spend over $10 on meal? lisa, you are right on time. we need you. we need you. we're going to show you how to spend a lot less money. moona has a envelope there. she's going to reach into the envelope. what do you have? >> $2.56. i can afford that. >> you can afford a meal for $2.56? >> of course. >> and lisa, for you, the challenge, what are you making? >> we're making the easiest spinach lasagna. it's supereasy. it's only six ingredients.

and heavy cream and fresh sage leaves. season that with a little salt and pepper. you don't need the tongs. i'm putting the butter in the pan. okay. that will be your serving. i'm going to use these tongs. we'll coat it in the flour. then you cook it in the pan with the apples until the pork chops are all the way done. no longer pink in the middle. then you take the pork chops out and start to make your sauce. you put water and apple juice in here and let it boil down and thicken. and then, this is what you're going to have. you want to put in the heavy cream. you want to add the pork chops back in. >> and voila. >> it makes a beautiful sauce. >> college students, take a bite. what do you think? >> great. >> what if you don't like apples? >> you can put carrots in there
