as a victim in this and that i'm a victim and a witness. >> reporter: those are the words the judge had a problem with. they were part of a 21 page statement he wrote to probation officers. >> this is not about you but, you know, if you take anything out of context, you can twist it around and make it about me. this statement was about everything. >> reporter: the plea deal was for almetta to get nine years in jail while co-defendant would get 6 but alameda county judge james cramer stunned the courtroom friday by rejecting the deal. he said he didn't take adequate responsibility for the unsafe conditions that led to the 2016 fire in which 36 people died. almetta said the judge's decision was horrible. >> my wife wanted to die. it's not fair. >> his attorney has indicated he'll seek to move a possible trial to another county. legal analyst steven clark says

half mile of lines. the lines sparked a small grass fire. they worked to restore service in the area. the driver of the car was not hurt. an oakland police officer is in critical condition last night after crashing early this morning. he was responding to a suspicious person call when his patrol car hit another car and then careened into a parked semitruck. the officer had to be extricated from his vehicle. opd has not said much about the officer section september that he's fairly knew to the force and the son of a lieutenant. a mother says she has forgiven the driver of a car that crashed into her son and his friend. they went off the side of highway 24 on the ramp to 680 and landed below. his mother says she is devastated for all the families

it was just crazy. >> reporter: a total of 67 pets in the fire's path including this python. many of the animals were loaded on to crates and placed in cars. as the flames got closer officer stone realized time was running out and put some dogs into her patrol car. >> i had nowhere to put the dogs. they seemed happy to be with me so we went to work and started evacuating houses for a few hours until i could get them back to the spca. >> it scorched 2,000 acres and burned one home in fairfield friday afternoon. nearby residents have been dropping off supplies throughout the day. cleanup could take days. no animals were injured and all are back at the shelter. some in the process of being adopted. >> we'll probably end up with a total of 12 too 15 animals that are with their rescuers. >> officer stone is one of those rescuers considering adopting a furry pet, a happy ending to a

before crashing into the woods. in utah a man took a plane before crashing it into his home killing only himself. >> the whole house, oh, my gosh. >> reporter: investigators in utah now trying to figure out why 47-year-old dewayne yau allegedly stole a plane from the company he works for and deliberately crashed it into his own home with family members inside. officials say on sunday he was booked on domestic violence charges and booked on bail then two hours later they got the call. >> house is fully involved. >> reporter: yau died in the crash. his wife and child were able to escape. yau's daughter processing what happened. >> i'm still in disbelief. >> another bizarre plane crash. >> i played video games before so i -- i know what i'm doing a

little bit. >> reporter: authorities say richard russell, a baggage bagge handler stole a plane and took it on a 75 minute joyride before crashing. >> just a broken guy, got a few screws loose i guess never really knew it until now. >> reporter: he didn't have a pilot's license and no known experience flying. the fbi says he has no ties to terrorism. airport authorities say he passed federal background checks, even extra security measures at that airport. authorities now reviewing the recovered data recorders from that plane hoping it will provide insight into how russell was able to steal an airplane at one of the nation's busiest airports. disaster was averted tonight in santa cruz following the grounding of a commercial fishing boat. the coast guard reports that crews successfully pumped all remaining 720 gallons of fuel from the boat before it could leak into the ocean.

this is near natural bridges state park. the vessel got stuck yesterday and started to break apart. they spilled an estimate of 200 gallons of diesel. the lafayette council is trying to save the theater. an oakland developer wants to create more parking spots to expand a neighbor parking complex. the city proposed to transfer some of the land to preserve the theater. a decision hasn't been reached. a former corporate couple decided, you no he what, we are giving up our careers. >> now they are pursuing their dream of traveling the world. kelly and ben lutz sold their home so they could spend the next year traveling with their 18 month old daughter. >> we knew we weren't happy with our day-to-day routine in san francisco. why are we wishing away every single day of the week to get to the weekends.
