by 4:00, it's a breezy afternoon, but it's comfortable. 70s and 80s. download the accuweather app, check the temperatures any time as you're out and about. let's see how we're doing on the roads. >> good morning. we do have a sig alert in sonoma county this morning, so lakeville highway, a full closure unfortunately due to a crash. this is involving a dirt hauler that flipped over just north of state route 37, but a full closure is in effect of lakeville highway between state route 37 and 116. you can stick to 121 or the 101 corridor. we still have no estimate for when that roadway will reopen and still no word on injuries to that driver either. everyone else, fairly quiet this morning. we'll head to the central valley coming up next. a new warning from the fbi about the next time uuse an atm machine. >> they're bracing for a sophisticated attack on banks across the world. and abc 7 news reporting amanda dell case tillio in san jose with how banks plan to keep your

money safe. >> i want to first begin with exactly what the operation entailed. we know the global fraud scheme is dubbed the atm cash out, and crooks are looking to do just that. according to the fbi, here's how the operation will work. essentially, hackers will get account information, they will then create a bunch of fake atm cards and use them to hack into bank systems and steal millions of dollars from customer accounts. it can enable a large scale theft of funds from atms around the world. it was recently uncovered. it found almost all atm cash out operations had been launched on weekends usually after banks begin closing for business on saturday. you want to monitor your accounts in the next few days. the fbi is asking u.s. and international banks to review and ramp up security, including verification using a physical or

digital token when possible for withdrawals. the fbi is warning banks across the world that this operation could take place in the next few days. i'm live in san jose tonight -- this morning, i should say. abc 7 news. >> thank you. only on 7, derrick almena, the man now set to go to trial in the deadly ghostship fire is speaking for the first time since a judge rejected a plea deal he made with prosecutes. he spoke to abc 7 news from the jail in dublin. he said he was stunned when the judge dismissed a deal that would have resulted in a nine-year jail sentence and ordered almena and co-defendant max harris to stand trial. the judge said almena didn't show remorse for the fire that killed 36 people. almena said the judge took parts of his written statement out of context. >> twisted it around and made it seem about me. this statement was about everything. i have been remorseful from the moment this happened. >> almena's attorney said a new

from attending the public advisory meeting because they said the room was at capacity. google said the development would be 6 to 8 million square feet and include office, residential space. >> what is google doing to insure that san jose residents don't get displaced by their new complex. >> google is listening to the community input along with the city, and they expressed early on their intention to be part of some of the solutions. >> google wants to come here, they have to be a good neighbor. >> maria is on the advisory committee and works for silicon valley rising which looks at how tech development impacts working class people. >> we want google, tech to grow and flourish here, but it has to be with us. >> no one from google is listening to us here. >> jeremy taylor lives one mile from the station. he says the mere anticipation of google's development, which likely wouldn't break ground for another seven years, is driving housing costs up in his neighborhood. >> my neighbor is getting kicked out today, so i get that they

have their own timeline, but we're already experiencing it. >> san jose is still in the early planning stages of all this. city council is on track to make a decision about the sale of about $70 million in public property in early december. google says they wouldn't break ground, though, until 2025. in the meantime, they're ready to work with the community. in san jose, kate larson, abc 7 news. this morning, investigators in contry costa county trying to find out more about a woman whose body was found in a canal in bay point. the 25-year-old of pittsburg was last seen july 16th. deputies recovered her body july 20th near driftwood drive and pacifica avenue. an autopsy will help determine how she died. investigators are asking people to come forward with any details about what happened. a mother says she has forgiven the driver of a car that crashed in walnut creek killing her son and his friend. >> 17-year-old dekari along with 18-year-old john died when their car went off the side of highway

24 and landed his mother said she's devastated for all of the families involved. >> i send love, peace, and hope for the parents to get through this. i have no ill feelings or anger towards the driver. >> the driver, ramya ramey, and two other young women suffered serious injuries. she was arrested on suspicion of felony manslaughter and dui. >> about a dozen customers remain without a car crashed into a power pole last night. chp closed part of danville boulevard. pg&e expects to turn the power back on in about an hour. the driver of the car was not hurt. and good morning. it's 5:07 a.m. we do have issues with that fog out there this morning. live doppler 7 showing you the visibility in miles. where you see 10, that's great.

seattle's seatac airport took a passenger jet and crashed it in the woods. yesterday, investigators say a pilot in utah stole a plane from work and deliberately crashed it into his own home. both of these incidents raised questions about airport security. the utah pilot, 47-year-old dwayne yaod bailed out of jail on sunday after being accused of domestic violence. he died, his wife and daughter escaped. a narkt says he called 911 when he saw the plane go down. >> lower and lower. i said, oh, my gosh. it's going to hit the mountain. it's getting lower. you could see it getting lower. all of a sudden a huge ball of orange fire. >> in seattle, authorities are still reviewing data recordings from friday's crash involving a baggageler for horizon air. sea-tac authorities said richard russell had passed background checks and extra security measures at the airport.

>> in gma's first look, it's happened again. a visitor to a national park getting a lot closer to dangerous wild animals than he should have. >> in this morning's gma first look, a scene right out of a nature film. a group of wild brown bears in alaska's national park fishing for salmon. then watch as a man suddenly appears, inching dangerously close to the unsuspecting bears. he reaches into his pocket, pulls out a camera, and starts snapping shots of the bears. he even turns his back to them to take a selfie. then, still not satisfied, he wadz even closer to the bears to take more photos. but while that man was watching the bears, an online audience was watching him on a streaming nature web cam, and those viewers alerted park officials who tracked him down. >> bears are very territorial, and they're focused on their fishing activities. and having people in that area is extremely unsafe. >> coming up add 7:00 a.m.,

we'll have more on this incident. with your gma first look, i'm diane macedo, abc news, new york. >> homeowners in areas of recent firefighters may have a more difficult time finding fire insurance. if they do, they'll have to pay more. >> california insurance commissioner david jones says he expects more insurance companies to opt out on renewing policies or to simply stop writing homeowners policies in areas with the highest fire risk. he also anticipated rate increases in parts of the state to be reclassified from safe to high risk. a southern california homeowner got a special house call after firefighters saved his home from the holy fire. frank says he evacuated his home in corona. he watched as firefighters battled the flames through an app connected with his security came cameras. then he got a notification that someone was ringing the video doorbell. >> your house is safe. >> i really appreciate that. thank you so much. >> are you guys doing okay

wherever you're at? >> yeah, we're over here at my aunt's house in irvine. we're okay. >> i told him, you know, thank you. we love you. we love you guys, man. >> we love you guys, man. stay safe. >> what a sweet thing to do. the holy fire has burned nearly 23,000 acres. it's 59% contained. crews have managed to safely remove hundreds of gallons of fuel from a commercial fishing boat that ran aground in santa cruz. >> this boat got stuck sunday and started to break apart, spilling about 200 gallons of diesel into the ocean. this is near natural bridges state park. the coast guard says it successfully pumped the rest of the fuel from the boat. at least 620 gallons. >> a new report says five new towers could be built on one booming san francisco block. here's a view, just a block from the newly opened salesforce transit center. it turns out the development wave is now spreading south.

according to the san francisco chronicle, five towers are approved or proposed along howard street. the latest one filed last week called for a 350-foot-tall building at 543 howard street. also a 44-story project with housing and offices at 540 howard. and three other projects are also in the works at 555 and 524 howard street. also plan to build the city's fourth tallest tower. it would be located at 542 through 550 howard street. >> the oakland a's are one of the hottest teams in baseball, but they're having trouble drawing fans. after last night's win, third baseman matt chapman urged oakland to come out and watch the team. >> all the fans and support we could get, we would really appreciate it. i wish we could get more people out here. we're fun to watch. >> the a's are holding on to the second american league wild card spot, but they have the third lowest attendance in baseball this year. the paid attendance for last night's game, 10,000 fans.

put that in perspective, the struggling giants drew 41,000 fans for their last home game. come on, go out and support them. >> no kidding. come on. >> doesn't seem fair. >> okay, coming soon, a new water park that is fun for the whole family. >> the sf gate reports great wolf lodge will open its first northern california location in mante manteca. construction on the 95,000 square foot water park will begin later this year. there will be slides, pools, and raft rides for all ages. also at the resort will be a 45,000 square foot family entertainment center with a ropes course, an arcade, and miniature golf. the great wolf lodge expected to open in 2020. and i feel a family trip for us all happening. in 2020. >> none of us actually has children, but we can act like them, i guess. >> i was thinking we were a family. >> yeah, sure. we'll go with that. >> lazy river. give me one any time, a wave pool, give me one any time. i'm here for it.

>> anything lazy, i'm good. >> you got us into it. let's talk about the weather. we have issues with fog. we have been talking about this all morning. along the coast and in the north bay. live doppler 7 showing you a fair amount of cloud cover overhead. visibility at half moon bay down to one mile at this hour. pockets of dense fog greeting some of us. right now, temperature wise, good morning, san francisco. 56. hop over to oakland at 59. san jose at 60. pretty uniform temperatures in the mid 50s to low 60s. a light jacket certainly needed. hour by hour, let's time it out for you. 7:00 this morning, you can see a fair amount of fog, low cloud cover from san francisco, over to oakland, san leandro. even along the coast. by 10:00, fog over san francisco, still fog over oakland, but that cloud cover pulling back into the afternoon. away from the coast today, pretty much a sunny sky. st some peeks and pokes in the afternoon. that cloud cover pretty thick today. cool in san francisco today, 63. much warmer in concord, 85 your

high. that's pretty comfortable for this time of year. no 80s inland today. 90s, rather. 81 in san jose today. 82 in santa rosa later on today. and oakland, pretty comfortable with a high of 69 degrees. the accuweather seven-day forecast, plan the next seven days for you. cool numbers for august through wednesday. then a warming trend will take over late in the week, and by the weekend, saturday, it does turn hot inland once again. all right, that's the weather. how are we on the roads this morning? >> doing okay with one exception. we do have a sig alert in sonoma county early this morning. actually it started around 2:00 a.m. dirt hauler flipped over and that dirt is all over the roadway. also the truck is leaking diesel, and they're still working on cleaning this up, about 3 1/2 hours later. a full closure of lakeville highway between state route 37 and state route 116. pretty major cut through, but fortunately, an area where there are some alternate. you can use 121 between the big bend and sears point area or

stick to 101, wide open in either direction right now. still no estimate on when that will reopen but keeping a close eye on that. also a quick look at the east bay commute. walnut creek, southbound 680, light volume and that's pretty much how all of our cameras are looking right now. next traffic update before 5:30. colleagues and loved ones remembering chp officer kirk grisz yesterday at the chp academy in west sacramento. he died friday in fairfield when a pickup truck veered off the road, hitting him and the car he had pulled over. he was 46 years old. another bay area bike shop has been hit by thieves. >> the bikery at 23rd and international in east oakland was broken into some time over the weekend. the store says about 35 bikes, parts, and cash register till were stolen. the bikery wrote on its facebook page that it plans to step up security.

the theft came just days after box dog bikes was broken into. thieves stole about $40,000 worth of bikes there. police have not said if the two crimes are connected. the 49ers don't play until saturday, but they've been battling with an opponent off the field. and it's the city of santa clara. >> now the city is calling out om after the city won a two-year legal fight over the team's rent at levi's stadium. in a ruling announced over the weekend, an arbiter denies the request to have their rent reduced by $4.25 million a year. instead, the arbiter increased the team's rent by $260,000 to nearly $25 million a year. mayor lisa gilmore called on the niners to release documents used in the arbitration. >> if there really is to be honesty and transparency, we are asking them to release the confidentiality agreement for the documents of the arbitration so we can really show the public

it's 5:25. here are the seven things to know before you go. number one, a possible act of terrorism in london. police arrested a driver who they say crashed outside parliament on purpose. several people were hurt in this attack. number two, ghostship defendant derrick almena spoke exclusively to abc 7 newses. he said a judge took part of a statement out of context when rejecting his plea deal. his attorney now wants to move the possible trial out of alameda county. >> number three, a war of words between omarosa and president trump continuing this morning. and in a new tweet this morning, president trump calling the former white house aide a, quote, crazed, crying, lowlife and also, quote, a dog. no response yet from omarosa. >> number four, a serious warning about a possible attack on atms. the fbi is telling banks to beef up security. saying cyber criminals are

in a sailboat if you're watching us this morning. thanks for joining us. >> yeah, not a great morning out there to be on the water, but it will get better through the day. we'll see gradual clearing. fog, we want to height lite that because that's the biggest concern. visibility is down to a mile. where you see 10, that's great. you have great visibility. along the coast and in the north bay, santa rosa, you're down to three miles. cloud cover over san francisco, your 12-hour day planner, coastal drizzle, a lot of clouds. gradual clearing through the morning, and by the afternoon, most spots seeing sunny skies. probably the only exception, san francisco. you're stuck in the clouds for much of the day, but a comfortable day. 70s and 80s in our warmest spots. let's get a check of the roads with alexis. >> early start here for the bay bridge commute. those metering lights on at 5:22. so yeah, unless you're using the carpool lanes, you'll have to sit through a bit of a stack-up. that's starting to back up into the maze this morning. no further delays once you make it past the metering lights into san francisco.

westbound 580, bridge looks great at 6 minutes. westbound across san mateo, just 13. and westbound 84 across the dumbarton bridge, only coming in at a 10-minute drive. we have a sig alert in sonoma. we'll head back there next. >> breaking news from the abc 7 live desk. >> stunning new pictures from italy, so look at this. this is genoa. 11 people are confirmed dead after a highway bridge collapsed. five others are now said to be injured and in serious condition. it's still early, put it looks like it's about 20 cars and trucks involved in this collapse. >> some people have been extricated from the vehicles. sniffer dogs now looking at that rubble, trying to get some of those injured victims out of that area. here's another live look there at the crash scene. heavy equipment being brought in to lift pieces of the bridge up. obviously, a major scene right now. 200 firefighters responding to this accident. and we're going to keep an eye on this. we'll have breaking news updates throughout the newscast as we get them.

also from our live desk this morning, some developing news out of london where police are investigating a car crash outside parliament. they're investigating it as an act of terrorism. and they say the driver who was arrested is not cooperating at this point. appears the crash was a deliberate act. officers swarming the area. they have blocked off streets around the building which is in the heart of london. several people were injured when the car plows into security barriers earlier this morning. they're all expected to be okay, to survive. police say the counterterrorism unit is now leading this investigation. you may also remember last year another driver in london sped into crowds on westminster bridge, killing four people. he stabbed and killed a police officer before he was shot outside parliament. so they're on high alert this morning, reggie. >> only on 7, derrick almena, the master 10 nlt of the ghostship warehouse is speaking out for the first time since a judge rejecting his plea deal last week. he and his co-defendant are

likely to face a trial and attorneys want it moved. matt keller live for us in dublin with more on that. matt. >> good morning, reggie. almena was emotional when he spoke to us here at santa rita jail via a video hookup. he's still upset after the judge rejected his plea deal. >> this is not about you, but you know, if you take anything out of context, you can twist it around and make it seem about me. this statement was about everything. >> almena wrote a 21-page statement to probation officers including a part where he said he's a victim and a witness. those are the words he believed the judge had a problem with. plea deal was for him to get nine years in jail while max harris would get six in exchange for no contest pleas of involuntary manslaughter. kramer rejected the deal on friday saying the ghostship's master tenant did not take adequate responsibility for the unsafe conditions that led to the 2016 fire in which 36 people died. almena says the judge's decision

this is the first death related to the mendocino complex. >> and the wildfire season is taking a toll on california wildlife. >> leaving animals dehydrated and heat exhausted. the cleveland national forest post these photos on twitter. we apologize for the wrong video here. firefighters assigned to the holy fire cared for a baby deer, and we're going to try to get you those photos throughout our newscast when we're able to. >> okay, oakland police expected to release the name today of the officer seriously injured in a rash. he was responding to a call near the port of oakland yesterday morning when his patrol car hit another car. that's the video you were just seeing. the patrol car then veered into a parked semi truck. the officer had to be extricated from his vehicle. he does remain in critical condition this morning. no one else was hurt in the crash. the departmen s son of a lieute. last month, a dead in this backpack, and a

$5,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible. the dog was an 8-month-old chihuahua mix. it was found on july 27th at stony point road. an examination revealed the dog had been strangling to death. >> a san jose firefighter is recovering from a dog bite that he suffered while trying to rescue the dog from a burning house. the fire started at a home on raven's place way just before 8:00 last night. the flames spread to a home next door. both houses were heavily damaged. the firefighter's injury is not considered serious. lafayette city council is reviewing a proposal to save an historic theater. the park theater closed in 2001 and is one of the last remaining single screen theaters in the state an oakland developer wants to create more parking spots to expand a neighboring apartment complex. a community group has proposed transferring some of the theater's land to a developer in exchange for preserving the theater. a decision has not yet been reached. >> this morning, president trump

79, that high in san diego. so today, got cloud cover. nice and comfortable in the afternoon. so weather is doing well. how about the roads this morning? are we doing okay? >> we have one trouble spot in particular here. so the same one we have been talking about this morning. this is in sonoma. we had a crash overnight, happened about 2:00 a.m. a truck hauling dirt flipped over on lakeville highway. a full closure all directions. all lanes are blocked of lakeville highway between state route 37 and state route 116. i'm not seeing any significant delays yet. unfortunately, there are some detours. it's not often we have a crash in an area where there is another option here, but 121 is fine. and 101, nice and light in both direction between pet aa and novato. either of those are decent options right now. if my clicker will cooperate, i want to talk about an issue with b.a.r.t. up to a 20-minute delay between

this morning, we are hearing from one of the brave officers who captured this very dramatic video of animals being rescued from a shelter in vacaville. >> this is nothing short of heroic, and tis happened in the nelson fire last week. officer carly stone is seen in the video running to grab cats and dogs. she said it was chaotic, between the flames coming down the hill and the helicopters circling the area, a total of 67 pets were in the fire's path, including, look at this, a python. of the aniad on crates and placed in cars. as the flames got closer, officer stone realized time was running out. she put some of the dogs in her own patrol car. >> i had nowhere to put the dogs, they seemed happy to be with me. we just went to work and started evacuating houses until i could get them to the spca. >> all of the animals went back to the shelter. some are now in the process of being adopted. officer stone is now considering

friday. and here we go again. by saturday, it's hot inland, even around the bay. we're in the 80s before the heat will moderate for the second half of the weekend. all right, that's the weather. let's get a check of the roads. how are we doing? >> all right in most areas, although we're already really stacked up at the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights on very early today, about 5:22. so everyone except the carpoolers are having to wait through the metering lights to get into san francisco this morning. flipping over to our traffic maps, we're actually looking much, much better on eastbound 580. we have lanes scheduled to be closed between greenville road and 205 until about 11:00 for grinding and paving work. looks like they may have wrapped up early because checking out the speeds, last time, it was about 15 miles per hour. up to 16 miles per hour now, and we're back in the green. not so much though for the westbound side of the roadway. westbound 205, about 7 miles per hour, and 15 miles per hour once you make it to 580. also have a high wind advisory for altamont pass and a few areas with dense fog advisories. we definitely have some thick spots out there.

jessica. >> thank you. a group of security researchers say they have exposed a security threat on amazon's echo smart speakers. the team in china says it was quite an elaborate process. they swapped out parts of the device and were able to use the modified echo to hack into over devices. wired reports the researchers notified amazon of the hack and the company says devices have been automatically updated with a patch. the researchers are now concerned that there may be other echo vulnerabilities that have not yet been exposed. the a's will now offer scholarships to peralta community college students. that's the same college that broke off discussions about a stadium last year. they established a $100,000 endowment to provide four scholarships a year to provide scholars for four colleges. the a's wanted to build a new stadium near laney college, but the peralta board of trustees decided not to move forward with the negotiations.
