metering lights on early, at 5:22 for that. that's really an early start for you, and things are backed up into the maze. of course, carpool lanes are cruising through without issues. a quick check of b.a.r.t. i have good news here as well. an earlier equipment problem. that has cleared. normal service is resuming. still, a 20-minute delay between colma and daly city, and east bay direction, whatever that equipment problem on the track was, they have figured that out. we'll look at drive times coming up next. now breaking news from the abc 7 live desk. >> we're staying on top of breaking news from italy. 11 people confirmed dead after a highway bridge collapsed in genoa. these are stunning live pictures coming into our newsroom. you can see the sheer devastation there. also, want to show you some video showing the scene just a few minutes ago. 20 cars and trucks said to be involved in this collapse. people have been extricated from their vehicles. and sniffer dogs are being used in the rubble to look for any

injured victims that may still be in that mess. here's another picture from the scene showing the dramatic situation right now. this was posted on twitter by the local emergency services in genoa. you can see a truck perched at the end of the surviving bridge section. we're going to have updates for you on this breaking story throughout the morning on abc7news.com and also using the abc 7 news app. a new warning from the fbi this morning about the next time you use an atm. they are bracing for a sophisticated attack that could steal large sums of money. >> we're being told banks worldwide are vulnerable. abc 7 news reporter amanda live in san jose this morning to explain how banks can keep your money safe. amanda. >> jessica, reggie, the fbi is asking banks to review and revamp its security proetocols. this could mean a few extra steps as you access your accounts in the next few days. hackers are targeting money

machines in an atm cash out. hackers will get account information and create fake atm cards and use those cards to hack into bank systems and steal millions of dollars from customers. a cybersecurity blog uncovered the threat last week. it reports this is a worldwide threat that can result in taking large amount of cash with the stolen information. ia want to monitor account activity in the next few days. the fbi is asking banks to consider implementing strong password requirements and two-factor verification using a physical or digital token when possible. for withdrawals. beyond that, the bureau is suggesting banks also monitor activity across the board. i'm live in san jose this morning, abc 7 news. thanks, amanamanda. >> derrick almena, the man now set to go to trial in the deadly ghostship fire is speaking for

the first time since a judge rejected a plea deal he made with prosecutors. he spoke to abc 7 news from the jail in dublin. he said he was stunned on friday when judge james kramer dismissed a deal that would have resulted in a nine-year jail sentence and ordered almena and co-defendant max harris to instead stand trial. the judge said almena didn't show remorse for the fire that killed 36 people. almena says the judge took parts of his written statement out of context. >> you can twist it around and make it seem about me. this statement was about everything. i have been remorseful from the moment this happened. >> almena's attorney says a new deal is possible. if the case does go to trial, he has indicated he's going to seek to move it to another county. that case will be back in court on friday. abc 7 news will be there. you can look back at all of our stories about this tragedy on our app. tensions are growing this morning in the south bay between google and people in san jose. city officials say google is

listening to input as it develops plans for a mega development downtown, but critics say they're not being heard. >> we will not be erased. we will not be displaced. rally at city hall yesterday. police barred many of them from attending a public advisory meeting about the development because they said the room was at capacity. protesters fear the development near the s.a.p. center and cal train station would displace residents. google would not break ground, though, for another seven years. neighbors say, though, the plan already driving up housing costs. >> my neighbor is getting kicked out today, so i get that they have their own timeline, but we're already experiencing it. >> city council expected to make a decision in december. investigators in contra costa county trying to find out more about a woman whose body was found in a canal in bay

point. 25-year-old of pittsburg was last seen july 16th. then deputies discovered her body july 20th near pacifica avenue. an autopsy will help determine how she died. investigators are asking people to come forward with any details about what happened. a mother says she has forgiven the driver of a car who crashed in walnut creek, killing her son and also his friend. >> 17-year-old dukari along with 18-year-old john died when their car went off the side of highway 24 and landed below. his mother says she's devastated for all of the families involved. >> i send love, peace, and hope for the parents to get through this. i have no ill feelings or anger towards the driver. >> the driver, ramya ramey, and two other young women, suffered serious injuries. police arrested ramey on charges of felony manslaughter and dui.

>> another bay area bike shop has been hit by thieves. the bikery at 23rd and international in east oakland was broken into some time over the weekend. the store says about 35 bikes, parts, and the cash register till were stolen. the bikery wrote on its facebook page that it plans to step up security. and this theft came just days after box dog bikes in san francisco's mission district was also broken into. and thieves stole about $40,000 worth of bikes there. police have not said yet if these two crimes are connected. new at 6:00, taking on the vaping industry. the change the government is considering to keep our kids from becoming addicted. and buses rolling through the new salesforce transit center, but riders have noticed something is missing. places to sit. and the reason is a sign of the times in san francisco. and a lot of students heading back to school later on this morning. take a look at this. afternoon highs for dublin

two stolen planes, two deadly crashes. on friday, an employee at seattle's sea-tac airport took a passenger plan and crashed it in the woods. that's the aftermath you see there. then investigators say a pilot in utah stole a plan from work and deliberately crashed into his home. both of these incident raised questions about airport security this morning. investigators say the utah pilot, 47-year-old duane youd bailed out of jail sunday. early in morning, he crashed a plane into his home. he died, his wife and daughter escaped. a neighbor called 911 when he saw the plane going down. >> got lower and lower. i said oh, my gosh. ilities going to hit the mountain. it's getting lower. all of a sudden, a huge ball of orange fire. >> authorities in seattle are still reviewing data recordings

from friday's crash involving a baggage handler for horizon air. sea-tac authorities say richard russell passed federal background checks and extra security measures at the airport. the fbi considering restricting or even banning flavored e-cigarette liquids that appeal to teenagers. teen vaping is at an all-time high. nearly 12% of high school students say they have used e-cigarettes within the past month. last week, health groups sued the fda for delaying the products like juul. they increase their risk of nicotine addiction. >> the new sales' force transit center is open in san francisco. yesterday, we had live coverage of the first weekday morning xut. many people have noticed there are no seats inside the center's main entryway. according to the san francisco examiner, one of the project's architects said one reason is to prevent homeless people from sleeping there, although a

project spokesperson says sleeping in the transit center is not allowed, but that it is a separate issue from where and how many seats are inside. new at 6:00, alaska airlines passengers could soon have a new place to relax at sfo. according to the business journal, sfo is working with the airline to build a new lounge in terminal two. alaska air officials are want commenting yet, but the lounge would be part of new construction on top of the current terminal two building. the new space would also house a cafeteria, observation deck and administrative offices. >> wow. curious what that observation deck would look like. >> that would be cool. because obviously, virgin has been folding into alaska air. a lot of former virgin customers have been wanting a new lounge. so perhaps this is happening. >> very cool in terminal two. that's one of the nicer ones. ruly beautiful. let's talk about airport delays. nothing quite yet, but i'll likely see some in the next few minutes. we have some dense fog out there. walnut creek, a live look. you can see the low cloud cover,

the fog early on. as you take a look at visibility across the region, the thickest fog right now, where you would expect it, right along the coast. half moon bay, visibility down to one mile. even some patchy dense fog at this hour in santa rosa. down to two miles. highs later on today, a lot of sunshine in the south bay, going to 81 in san jose. about 77, that high later on in sunnyvale. along the peninsula, redwood city, a bright afternoon. much cloudier and cooler once you hit the coast along the peninsula, only 57 for pacifica. a lot of cloud cover right now in san francisco. a little sunshine downtown later on by 1:00, 2:00 in the afternoon. cool in daly city, cloudy, a high of 57. into the nrth bay later on today, sunnier skies, 81 for sonoma. 90 in cloverdale. into the east bay, upper 60s to mid 70s after morning cloud cover. we'll see brighter skies. about 69 in oakland. 71, castro valley. and inland, pretty comfortable for this time of year. no 90s to talk about.

it's low and mid 80s later on today. the accuweather seven-day forecast, planning the next seven days for you, cool for august today. that continues for tomorrow as well. but warmer air moves in here by the end of the week, and then you look at the weekend. especially on saturday. away from the coast, it is warm to hot for a lot of us. okay, let's take a look at the roads. how are we doing? >> we're doing okay. overall, one major issues and that cleared. no sig alerts. hoping we can keep it that way for the rest of the morning commute. we're looking at heavy traffic on westbound 94 between pittsburg and the bay point area. down to 13 miles per hour, 23 miles per hour. that's pretty typical. no collisions around the route but you're stop and go for around six miles. bay bridge toll plaza also congested this morning and those metering lights on very early, almost an hour ago, 5:22, the official time. so unless you're using the carpool lanes, you'll have to wait through the backup into the maze. some improving news here for b.a.r.t. down to a ten-minute delay between colma and daly city, and

these bears feeding on salmon. at one point, the man even turns his back to take a selfie. live stream viewers spotted him and reported him to officials. park visitors are required by law to be at least 50 yards from bears while they're feeding. >> these individuals to be on the ground in this area, it could have gone south very quickly. these are wild bears, and they will behave as bears do. >> could have ended badly, and this man and two others now facing criminal charges of reckless endangerment and harassing wildlife. homeowners in areas of recent wildfires may have a more difficult time finding fire insurance, and if they do find it, they're going to have to pay more. this according to the state department of insurance. california insurance commissioner david jones says he expects more insurance companies to opt out on renewing policies or to simply stop writing homeowners policies in the areas with the highest fire risk. he also expects rate increases

to be classified from safe to high risk. >> a new report says five new towers could be built along one booming san francisco block. this will now forever change our skyline. here's a look at google street view of howard street near 1st. this is just a block from the newly opened salesforce transitt center we have been talking about. the development wave is now spreading south. take a look at all of these projects that are approved or at least proposed along howard street. this according to the san francisco chronicle. among the biggest plans, a proposal to build the city's fourth tallest tower at 800 feet. that would be located at 542 through 550 howard street. i just walked that corridor the other day. and it's just construction, construction, construction everywhere you go. ow i do.ou know why. >> next at 6:30, the firefighters who went above and beyond to care for a baby deer in the middle of a raging wildfire. >> a news out of london where police are investigating a possible terror attack after someone drove a car through barriers at parliament.

to dublin, no blocking, just that typical crawl. southbound 680, in the yellow at 22. earlier crash at andrade is off on the shoulder, and northbound 85 between 1 01 and kupecuperti the green at 17 minutes. >> now back to the breaking news we have been following all morning from italy. a highway bridge collapse in genoa. this is a live picture. you can see, it's just missing a poorgz of the bridge. we just received an update in the past 15 minutes. that death toll continues to go up this morning. 22 people are now confirmed dead. that's up from 11 earlier. the situation obviously very serious right now. we know at least eight more people are hurt, but that number could also go up. sniffer dogs are at the scene right now combing through the wreckage. and check out this new aerial video that we have showing the scene. the disaster occurred on a major highway that connects italy to france and some vacation resorts. stay with abc7news.com and our app for updates on the story throughout the day.

>> and from our live desk this morning, developing news out of london where police are investigating a car crash outside parliament as an act of terrorism. i want to show you a live look now at what's going on outside parliament building. we don't have that live picture for you, but i can tell you that right now, officers are swarming the area. look at this video from a little while back. they have blocked off streets around the parliament building. it's in the heart of london. police arrested the driver at the scene. several people were injured when the car plowed into security barriers this morning. they are all expected to survive. police say the counterterrorism unit is now leading this investigation. and you may remember last year, another driver in london sped into crowds on the westminster bridge, killing four people. that's not far from this morning's attack. he stabbed and killed a police officer before he was shot outside parliament last year. this morning, we're now hearing from derrick almena, the

master tenant of the ghostship warehouse, set to face a trial after a judge rejected his plea deal. his staern wants to move his trial to a different county. matt keller is live at santa rita jail with a story you'll see only on 7. >> reggie, almena spoke to us via video hookup at santa rita jail. he told us the judge's decision was horrifying. >> crippled with hate and ridicule. those that will never recognize my family as a victim in this and that i'm a victim and a witness. >> those were the words almena said judge james kramer had a problem with. the plea deal was for him to get nine years in jail while co-defendant max harris would get six in exchange for no contest pleas for involuntary manslaughter, but kramer stunned the courtroom by rejecting the deal. he said almena did not take adequate responsibility for the unsafe conditions that led to the 2016 fire in which 36 people

counties and the firefighter was air lifting to the hospital suffering an injury. he died at the hospital. cal fire says the firefighter was from utah. this is the first death related to the mendocino complex. wildfire season is taking a toll on california wildlife, leaving animals dehydrated and heat exhausted. they posted this picture on twitt twitter. firefighters caring for a baby deer. they gave her water and helped her back on her feet. the holy fire in southern california has burned nearly 23,000 acres. >> oakland police expected to release the name today of an officer seriously injured in a crash yesterday. he was responding to a call near the port of oakland early yesterday morning when his patrol car hit another car. the patrol car then veered into a parked semitruck. the officer had to be extricated from the vehicle. he remains in critical condition this the department says the officer is fairly new to the force and

is the son of a lieutenant. last month, a dog was found dead in this backpack. now a $5,000 reward being offered for any information leading to an arrest and conviction of the person responsible. the dog was an 8-month-old chihuahua mix, found on july 27th at todd and stony point roads. an examination revealed the dog had been strangled to death. >> a san jose firefighter is recovering from a dog bite he suffered while trying to rescue the canine from a burning house. the fire started at a house on raven's place way. the flames spread to a house next door. both houses heavily damaged. the firefighters injury is not considered injury. >> the lafayette city council is reviewing a proposal to save a historic theater. the park theater closed in 2001. it's one of the last remaining single screen theaters in the state. an oakland developer wants to create more parking spots to expand a neighboring apartment complex. a community group has proposed transferring some of the

theater's land to the dwemer in exchange for preserving the theater. a decision has not been reached. >> this morning, president trump taking his feud with former aide omarosa manigualt newman even further. he tweeted this alarming tweet about an hour ago. saying, quote, when you give a crazed, crying lowlife a break and give her a job at the white house, i guess it just didn't work out. good work by general kelly for quickly firing that dog. now, manigault newman had recently released several audio recordings, including one with the president where he said no one had told him she had been fired. manigault newman's new tell-all book on her time in the white house is out today. the white house says the book is riddled with lies and false accusations. so far, no response from omarosa this morning on that very sharp tweet that president trump sent out earlier. and time now, 6:38 a.m. and accuweather, a live look from our golden gate bridge

across the globe. amanda is in san jose to explain how banks are planning to keep all of our money safe. aman amanda. >> yeah, jessica, reggie. the global fraud scheme is dubbed the atm cash-out, and crooks are looking to do just that. according to the fbi, here's how it will work. hackers will get account information. they will then create fake atm cards to hack into bank systems and steal millions of dollars from customer accounts. the warning was recently uncovered by the cybersecurity website krebs on security. you'll definitely want to monitor your accounts in the next few days. the fbi is asking u.s. and international banks to review and revamp security including implementing strong password requirements and two-factor validation using either a physical or digital token when possible. we know that the fbi is warning banks around the world that this operation could take effect in just the next few days. so something to keep in mind as

you visit an atm. reporting live in san jose, abc 7 news. >> amanda, thank you. investigators in iowa have launched a new website asking for tips that will lead them to mollie tibbetts. she's the iowa college student with bay area ties who has been missing for nearly a month now. officials are still trying to find anyone who may have seen tibbetts in the area where she went running on july 18th. investigators say they're looking into all possibilities. >> it is possible that mollie came in contact with someone who has caused her harm. this person may not necessarily be a member of our community but likely has some familiarity with the area. >> the reward to find tibbetts is now more than $366,000. tibbetts grew up in the east bay before moving to iowa. celebrities and fans are offering prayers and well wishes to aretha franklin who we're now learning is in hospice care at her home. last night in franklin's hometown of detroit, beyonce and
