good morning, south bay. >>s is "abc 7 mornings." welcome to wednesday, august 15th. it is 5:00 a.m. >> never more than seven minutes away from your accuweather forecast. meteorologist drew tuma in for mike nicco. hi, drew. >> good morning. we're trackingromteetredidon c s time yesterday. visibility is down to seven miles, but this time yesterday we were down to one mile. not as foggy as it was yesterday morning. outside, a live look from our exploratorium camera. gray skies overhead, a lot of us waking up to cloud cover. like yesterday the cloud cover coast. by 4:00 we will see sunnier skies prevailing away from the coast, but it is cool for august with 70s and 80s away from the coast. we do have a traffic alert with

alexis. here's more on that. >> we sure do. involving a pedestrian. we did get word from chp this is a fatality. that investigation continues on northbound 101 around sfo. that crash happened right around millbrae avenue and for about 15 minutes we had a full closure, all lanes were blocked. they were able to open up the two left lanes. the two right lanes are closed. we have a crew on the way to the scene. hopefully we'll have more information once matt keller arrives. you can stick to el camino real or 280, another option if you're trying to get to sfo this morning. plan on a few delays or a little longer trip if you have to take a detour. everyone else still fairly quiet this morning. a look at drive times coming up next. >> thank you. new details on a deadly workplace accident last week in san francisco involving a worker at muni's west portal station. >> it seems there are questions swirling around the contractor's safety record.

abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo is live at the construction site with the allegations. >> reporter: jessica, reggie, records obtained by the san francisco examiner revealed the contractor who hired the man skilled at construction site friday did not disclose its long list of previous workplaceplng . it was last friday when a temporary steel beam fell on 51-year-old patrick ricketts working construction inside the 100-year-old twin peaks tunnel. he was hired by shimmick construction. back in november 2017 shimmick construction and another partner answered no when an sf mta questionnaire asked whether either had been cited for serious or willful violations by osha in the last ten years. according to "the examiner" the company had been linked to 50 workplace violations including

six citation to the 2016 death of a forklift worker in california. right now it's still too early to determine whether shimmick construction was in compliance with safety and health standards when that beam fell on the worker on friday, but we're digging into this for you and staying on top of it this morning. for now i'm live along west portal avenue, amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. now a live desk update. >> from abc 7 news. >> just coming in, new information on the suspect arrested outside parliament in london after the attack there yesterday. british media outlets have identified him. police arrested the 29-year-old uk national on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. they say he intentionally crashed into security barriers near parliament yesterday hurting three people. new video shows the tow truck removing the car from the crash site overnight. investigators have since raided several properties in england for evidence. we're learning more about a

potential global atm bank heist. we first told you about this fbi warning yesterday morning. now can derail their efforts. >> reporter: a massive threat against financial institutions around the world. the fbi now warning about the possibility of cyber criminals carrying out a scene using mallway to access personal bank card information. >> the bank has to do things from their site to upgrade their firewalls, upgrade their policies of dealing with transactions. >> reporter: these atm cashouts are more likely to happen at small to medium sized institutions because the cyber criminals believe the security measures aren't as strong. fraudulent copies of debit and credit cards are created by sending the stolen data to the masterminds who transfer it on to a reusable card with a magnetic stripe. >> once they are into the system they go to the administrative account and remove any kind of limitations. whatever in the bank at that time they can just cash that and they do it at a predetermined time all over the world.

>> reporter: the fbi declined to go into greater detail about the warning, but said in a statement, the fbi routinely advises private industry of various cyber threat indicators observed during the course of our investigations. this data is provided in order to help systems administrators guard against the actions of persistent criminals. despite the threat, officials at technology credit union in san jose are confident their systems are good to go. >> it is quite common in the financial industry to get alerts like these and whenever we do, we automatically trigger to our failsafe possession where we increase our monitoring and height our alert system to make sure we are covered. >> reporter: experts say change your password or pin number in the coming days and also think that the attack could happen on a saturday, which is when smaller banks tend to be closed for the weekend. reporting in san jose, i'm chris win, abc 7 news.

to the latest on the wildfires. >> people in glen county forced out of their homes because of the mendocino complex fire. the larger of the two fires continues to push northeast. glen county sheriff issued mandatory evacuations yesterday from take county and colusa ends to the national forest. a large section of the forest is closed off. areas east of the forest are under an evacuation advisory. we're learning more about the firefighter killed on the front lines of the mendocino complex. matthew burchet died from an injury he suffered the day before. details have notnee b news of his death has devastated the small town of draper which is 20 miles south of salt lake city. >> the chief came to draper city fire department in may of this year. prior to that he worked for the unified fire authority for the past 20 years. the chief leaves behind a wife and a handsome young son.

he was 42 years old. >> burchet was one of 40 utah firefighters from seven agencies deployed to the fires burning across california. good news on the ferguson fire as tourists are allowed back into the yosemite valley. it was closed for nearly three weeks because of smoke from the fire. fire officials hope to have it fully contained today but it is still burning near el portal road, an extension of highway 140. look at how devastating the three major northern california fires have been. these are the totals from the mendocino complex, ferguson and carr fires near redding. in total they've caused 11 deaths. according to cal fire, 1,370 homes are destroyed, the major in the redding area. the fires have burned 662,000 acres, more than alameda county, san jose, and san francisco combined. >> really puts it into

perspective. you know what, after coming off of a record warm july month, the past week cooler air has filtered into california helping firefighters and their efforts there. temperature wise, san jose unified, you're going back to school. low 60s in the south bay. light jacket, take it with you as you head out the door. 50s to low 60s. take a look at the rest of the bay area. cloud cover certainly with a lot of us this morning. 7:00 in the morning as we go hour by hour, time out the marine layer, thick in a lot of spots. by 10:00, 11:00 in the morning a majority of the region is breaking out for sunshine, the only exception, san francisco, coastline, east bay hayward still dealing with the patchy fog. by 1:00 away from the coast, the sunshine is dominating our sky. the bigger picture, the area of low pressure keeping us on the comfortable side today. that cooler air is over us, but it does keep the marine layer for longer during our morning hours. what we're watching, though, this area of high pressure will

begin to move westward over the next couple days and that will begin to warm up temperatures, especially as we head into the weekend. today it will be breezy along the coastline. your three-day forecast, look today, it's comfortable. if you liked yesterday, you're going to love today. 70s and 80s widespread away from the coast. as we get into thursday and especially into friday, as you move away from the coast you can see those numbers really warm up pretty rapidly and by friday in the inland east bay we're back into the heat once again with our hottest spots in the mid if not upper 90s. a traffic alert we want to tell you about. here's alexis. >> good morning. i checked in with matt keller as well. he is arriving to the scene around sfo. northbound 101 near millbrae. a fatal crash about an hour ago, a couple minutes after 4:00 a.m. a vehicle hit a pedestrian and the pedestrian did not survive. investigation is under way. we had a full closure ofrtound

with sunshine later today. >> thanks, drew. a team that founded the dating ap tinder is suing the owners for $2 billion. they say iac interactive corp and match group deliberately undervalued tinder to cheat them out of money they were owed. the founders claim they valued tinder at $3 billion. they found it's worth more than $10 billion. iac issued a statement calling the suit meritless and went on to say that the founders may not like the fact that tinder has experienced success following their departures, but sour grapes alone do not a lawsuit make. a long-time san francisco bar and live music venue is going silent. the hemlock tavern will soon be turned into housing. the venue first opened in 2001 s are soaking up the last suds before the bar is demolished an

of its first year of the system off to a good start. the celebration is from 10:00 to 3:00 on saturday at the hamilton station. they will have live music, food trucks, kids activities and giveaways. in napa the grape harvest is under way. workers for mum winery wl out at first light to pick grapes used to make its wines. this video is from past harvests. growers agree 2018 has been a fantastic growing year thanks to evensend becau the vines made a strong recovery after last year's october wildfires. the vines went into dormancy right after the fires, but made a full recovery. try to copy in and out and the fasts food chain may send you a cease and desist letter. a brewery in san francisco posted a picture of its new beer on instagram.

but i'm not seeing them anymore either. a quick check of the bay bridge toll plaza looking good still and no metering lights yet. that should be happening any minute now. >> thank you. today's "gma" first look rescuers saved a young couple in wyoming that ended up trapped in an ice cave almost two days. >> in this morning's "gma" first look it was supposed to be a birthday celebration for adventure loving couple jessica and spencer. they were in the wyoming darby ice caves. >> a lot of ice. very cool. the walls sparkled because there's so much ice. >> you can see from the video what the inside of the cave looks like. dark and freezing, surrounded by ice and water. the pair who are experienced climbers suddenly found themselves lost and stranded. >> she dug out and just an inch and a half maybe, just enough to get me to wiggle through. >> the caves so dark they were disoriented and then hypothermia began to set in and the couple

exploratorium camera, overcast skies right now in san francisco, so we have that gray morning early on. sunshine first prevails inland by noon and then into the afternoon away from the coast. we all see the sunshine. it is cool once again for august standards. 70s and 80s once you get away from the water. we want to alert you to traffic issues. here's more with alexis. >> one significant one this morning. a traffic alert still in effect. this all started a little bit after 4:00 this morning. initial calls into chp was that a vehicle hit something in the roadway and it turns out that was a pedestrian and that person did not survive. fatality investigation is under way on northbound 101 before millbrae avenue. we defl hi have some delays. they were able to reopen a couple lanes. i would say your backup is a little over two miles at this point. you can use el camino real or 280. either look okay right now. plan on a little extra time trying to make it for an early flight this morning. abc 7 news reporter matt keller just arriving to the scene. matt, i know you were in the backup there.

looks like you're just arriving. what can you tell us? >> yeah. it took us about 20 minutes to get from the backup, the backup started about a mile away from millbrae avenue. let me show you what it looks like from my point of view looking out my windshield. you can see that traffic is being diverted into two lanes here. so the far left two lanes are open. the far right two lanes and the millbrae avenue exit ramp is closed. so you got to be careful when coming up on this. you're not going to be able to go too fast when you arrive here on the scene because the chp does have those two lanes blocked off this morning. obviously a tragic incident out here. a crash involving a pedestrian. that pedestrian was killed in this crash and the chp will be out here investigating. they have a tow truck coming out here as well to take away at least one vehicle. obviously they're dealing with that and trying to get that cleared up. if you can avoid this area do that. of course we're around sfo so that can cause problems. we're trying to get to the

airport. it will cause problems for everybody on the morning commute here on northbound 101. back to you in the studio. >> thanks for the update. developing news now from the south bay, san jose police are searching for the driver who smashed into a car and a home. police were called to a house on angie avenue and south jackson street just before 11:00 p.m. when officers got there they found two cars smashed together in the driveway. one had a considerable damage. it's unclear if the home has any structural damage. whoever caused the crash ran from the scene before police got there. now a live desk update. >> the death toll for the collapse of a highway bridge in italy has gone up to 39 this morning. rescuers are still searching for any survivors. and this is a live look at the scene in genoa. you can see the massessive pile of rubble that search teams are still going through. i want to show you new drone video from the scene, you can see the mess left behind when the bridge collapsed over the river in the port city.

apart yesterday afternoon after being hit by lightning. new video of rescuers pulling a victim from the rubble. up to 35 vehicles fell nearly 180 feet to the ground. 16 people were hurt. 12 of those have critical injuries. there are still two people missing. construction was under way on the bridge, but investigators say they still don't know the exact cause of the collapse. family answered fred -- and friends of two young men killed in an accident held a vigil in walnut creek last night. 17-year-old dakarai fagorala and his friend 18-year-old john walizada were killed sunday morning. it happens as they drove back to antioch sunday after partying in san francisco. the car careening off of a freeway flyover in walnut creek >> i am overwhelmed and blessed to see the impact these young

men had on the lives of all these kids. >> the driver of the car 18-year-old ramya ramey is facing felony dui charges. the group of friends recently graduated from deer valley high school. two female passengers in the car survived and were badly injured and they are still in the hospital. we know the name of the officer in critical condition after crashing his patrol car near the port of oakland. 22-year-old jordan wingate graduated from the department's police academy last year. officer wingate collided with another car early monday morning as he responded to a call. his patrol car then hit a semi truck. officer wingate was trapped inside. he had to be extricated. no one else was hurt. sonoma supervisors want to revamp the county's fire deployment and asking taxpayer to foot the bill. supervisors approved a plan to a statns.e s they're asking voters to approve a lf cent sa that would raise nearly $42 million annually.

that would cover the estimated cost of the plan changes. a report out of sacramento says the state has burned through more than half of its annual fire fighting budget and we're only two months into the new fiscal year. wildfires this year have burned three times more land than what burned in all of 2017. governor brown says firefighters will get all the resources they need even if that means we have to dip into the state's surplus. because of the high fire danger east bay parks have temporarily banned open flames. abc 7 news was at lake temscal where warning signs are posted so they say no smoking, no wood or charcoal barbecues, no camp fires. gasoline powered generators also banned. visitors will be allowed to pro. we know why southwest grounded dozens of fghas lts the airline had to re-check how heavy the planes were. the chicago business journal
