gray shading on your screen. it's an overcast start for a lot of us. outside the exploratorium camera atop pier 15 showing you that cloudy sky over the bay bridge. your 12-hour planner will take you through your day on wednesday, gray start for a lot of us. by noon we have the sunshine first prevailing inland and then by 4:00 in the afternoon, most of us see sunshine but once again it is cool for august standards. temperatures similar today as they were yesterday. we do have a traffic alert. here's alexis with more. >> i want to take you back to the sfo area. this is a crash that we've been tracking since about 4:00 this morning. a deadly collision involving a pedestrian before you get to millbrae avenue. this is a sig alert. we got an update from chp that now just the far right lane is blocked along with the exit ramp to millbrae avenue. for some time there we had all lanes blocked that lasted about 15 minutes and then a couple lanes closed and looks like they are pushing this further over to the side. 11 miles an hour approaching the

scene. 4 miles an hour in one of those rare spots where there is an alternate that you can take. el camino real or 280 if you are heading to an early flight cut over and use 380 and head southbound on 101 to get to sfo. in the meantime, though, that investigation continues and abc 7 news reporter matt keller on the scene for us. what can you tell us? >> hi, alexis. yeah, a big backup on northbound 101, but the good news in the past five minutes they did open up a third lane here. people are able to go a little faster here on northbound 101 this morning. the slow lane and millbrae exit ramp are blocked off. a tragedy out here. the coroner is expected here in the next 15 minutes or so. this crash happened at about 4:00 this morning. chp told me it appears the person was just walking on the highway when they were hit by a vehicle. they died at the scene. the chp says they have not arrested the driver. it appears to be an accident. they're hoping to have 101 reopened by 7:00 a.m. or earlier. we have a tow truck out here at

the scene. it looks like they are towing away the vehicle involved in this crash. they are continuing their investigation this morning. reporting live in millbrae, matt keller, abc 7 news. new details on a deadly workplace accident last week in san francisco involving a worker at muni's west portal station. >> it seems there are questions about the contractor's safety record. abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo is live at the construction site with those allegations. amanda? >> reggie, jessica, the contractor involved in friday's deadly workplace accident that happened at this construction site has a history of safety violations and issues that were never reported to the city. that's according to the "san francisco examiner" the paper found shimmick construction had been linked to almost 50 workplace safety violations over the last ten years. that's 5-0. however "the examiner" reports in 2017 shimmick construction and their current partner

answered no when an sfmta questionnaire asked if they had been cited for serious or willful violations. a spokesman told the paper shimmick construction represented they met the requirements to prequalify for the bid but last friday when a temporary steel beam fell on 51-year-old patrick ricketts working construction inside the 100-year-old twin peaks tunnel. now osha is still investigating exactly what happened on friday. we know that ricketts' funeral is expected next week. reporting live from the west portal station, amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. now a live desk update. >> from abc 7 mornings. the suspect arrested yesterday outside parliament in london. british media outlets have identified him as salih khater. police arrested the 29-year-old uk national on suspicion of

preparing a terrorist act and say he intentionally crashed into security barriers near parliament yesterday hurting three people. this new video shows the tow truck removing the car from the crash site overnight. investigators have raided several properties in central england for evidence. now to the latest on the northern california wildfires. people in glenn county forced out of their homes because of the mendocino complex fire. the larger of the two fires continues to push northeast. glenn county sheriff issued mandatory evacuations yesterday from the lake county and colouisa lines. all the way to the eastern edge of the mendocino national forest. a large section of the forest is now closed off. areas east of the forest are under an evacuation advisory. we are now learning more about the firefighter killed on the front lines of the mendocino complex. battalion chief matthew burchet from utah died suffered the day before. he had been a firefighter for 20

years, well liked in the community and leaves behind a wife and young son. we do have good news on the ferguson fire. tourists are allowed back into yosemite valley. it was closed for nearly three weeks because of smoke from the fire. fire officials hope to have it fully contained today but right now it is still burning near el portal road. look at how devastating the three major northern california fires have been. these are totals from the mendocino complex, the ferguson, and the carr fire. that's the one burning near redding. in total they have caused 11 deaths and akofrgccording to cae 1,370 homes are destroyed, the majority are in the redding area. the fires have burned 662,000 acres. that is more than alameda county, san jose, and san francisco combined. developing news out of san francisco, where this morning a man is recovering after getting shot in the mission district. police responded to shotwell and

we will see how long the investigation takes with the coroner. matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you. developing news from the south bay, san jose police are searching for the driver who smashed into a car and then into this home. police were called to a house on angie avenue in south jackson street just before 11:00 p.m. when officers got there they found two cars smashed together in the driveway and one of them had a considerable damage. it's unclear right now if the home suffered structural damage. whoever caused the crash ran from the scene before police got there. now an abc 7 news live desk update. >> the death toll from the collapse of a highway bridge in italy has gone up to 39 this morning. rescuers are still searching up to 39 this morning. for survivors. a live look here in genoa. see the massive pile of rubble that search teams are going through. i want to show you new drone video from the scene, you can see the mess left behind when the bridge collapsed over the river. witnesses say the bridge fell

apart yesterday afternoon after being hit by lightning. new video of rescuers pulling a victim from rubble. up to 35 vehicles fell nearly 180 feet to the ground. 16 people were hurt. 12 of those have critical injuries. construction was under way on the bridge, but investigators say they still don't know the exact cause of the collapse. family and friends of two young men whose lives were cut short in an accident held a vigil in walnut creek last night. 17-year-old dakarai fagorala and his friend 18-year-old john walizada were killed in a car crash sunday morning. it happened as they drove back to antioch sunday morning after partying in san francisco. the car careened off of a freeway flyover in walnut creek. the mother of dakarai was there at that vigil. >> i am very overwhelmed and at the same time blessed to see the impact these young men had on the lives of all these kids.

the lives of all these kids. >> the driver of the car 18-year-old ramya ramey is facing dui charges. two passengers survived and were injured and remain in the hospital. we know the name of the officer in critical condition after crashing his patrol car near the port of oakland. 22-year-old jordan wingate graduated from the department's police academy just last year. officer wingate collided with another car early monday morning as he responded to a call. his patrol car then hit a semi truck. officer wingate was trapped inside. he had to be extricated. no one else was hurt. sonoma supervisors want to revamp the county's fire deployment and asking taxpayers to foot the bill. supervisors approved a plan to consolidate 39 fire agencies and increase the number of staff stations. they're asking voters to approve

a half cent sales tax next year that would raise nearly $42 million annually. that would just about cover the annual estimated cost of the plan changes. a report out of sacramento says the state has burned through more than half its annual fire fighting budget and we're only two months into the new fiscal year. wildfires this year have burned three times more land than what burned in all of 2017. governor brown says firefighters will get all the resources they need even if that means dipping into the state's sur plays. because of the high fire anger east bay parks have temporarily banned open flames. abc 7 news was at lake temscal where warning signs are posted and they say no smoking, no wood or charcoal barbecues, no camp fires. gasoline powered generators also banned. visitors will be allowed to use gas or propane fueled stoves. we know why southwest grounded dozens of flights last week. the airline had to re-check how heavy the planes were.
