fire. >> wayne freedman was there for the emotional procession. >> reporter: we're on airport drive near kaiser air where this long procession, more than a mile long procession, has just arrived with the casket within the last two minutes. take a look at this. it's most impressive. no sirens, just lights, flags, people saluting, a testimony and a tribute to this 42-year-old firefighter who all people in this drive knew him as an exceptional man. they say he was matty to his friends. he was 42 years old, from utah, leaves behind a wife and a 6-year-old son. let's listen, first, tomofpl whe at they're here. >> we should recognize him as family for their ultimate sacrifice. >> these firefighters leave their families for weeks at a time, and they come here to lay their lives on the line, and we

appreciate their service. >> my dad was a fire chief. and so i've had great respect for firefighters and police officers for many, many years. i mean, family gatherings, an alarm would go off and they leave because that's what they're dedicated to do. >> reporter: and now to the live with sky 7, as we continue talking about matty burchett. he was killed when a tree fell on him. he was not the only person to suffer. there were three firefighters from near fresno who were also injured in that same incident. this is six firefighters who have died in california this year. it is an enormous sacrifice. friends tell us, he was very professional, a master of his craft. others described him as the man who kept everyone else safe, which is ironic, considering what we're looking at here

today. they're about to load him onto that c-130 transport plane to fly him home to utah. the family has asked that we don't speak with them, give them their moment of privacy. we'll have more later as this develops. live in santa rosa, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. >> solemn afternoon. thank you very much. this afternoon, firefighters are making progress on the wildfires burning across the state. the mendocino complex of the ranch and river fires have burned 363,000 acres. the river fire is 100% contained. but the ranch fire is only 64% contained. crews contained the ferguson fire this the holy fire is 72% contained. the fresno fire department posted video of its crews protecting home threatened by the ranch fire. you can see how close the fire

is to buildings, the largest fire in california history is threatening more than a thousand structures. it has already the departmen and urban development has formally awarded $99 milli coun. the grants will go toward communities affected by the 2017 north bay wildfires. congressman jared huffman praised the funding as a much needed source of relief for people working to rebuild their lives and homes. larry esquivel was terminated yesterday, the city says, due to a personnel matter, no other details have been released. tracie is in -- he was the former san jose police chief. retired in 2015. tracie selected him to be the city's new police chief in october of 2015. new developments in the case surrounding the murder of keith green. suspects were back in court today. lee, not taking any of our

questions. abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo was in the courtroom? >> reporter: leaving the courthouse wednesday morning, tiffany lee took no questions. she's being charged in the 2016 murder of keith green, her ex-boyfriend, in april 2016 green vanished after meeting with lee about a child custody issue. his body was later found in a sonoma county field with a bullet wound through his neck. shortly after, s.w.a.t. teams raided lee's hillsboro mansion finding enough evidence to arrest lee and her boyfriend. he pleaded no contest. in february he cut a deal with the san mateo district attorney's office that could lead to prosecutors potentially dropping the murder charge against him in exchange for his truthful testimony against lee and byott. lee is the only one out on bail

after having posted property and cash worth nearly $70 million. the case will be delayed from september until sometime next lee will be back in court at 8:30 august 29th for that setting hearing. outside of the haul of justice in redwood city, amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. a pedestrian was hit and killed near sfo this morning. officials say the pedestrian was hit by a vehicle on northbound 101 just after 4:00 this morning. it's not clear why that pedestrian was on the highway. at one point all north bbound lanes were shut down. the pedestrian's identity has not been released. the cds is warning of new measles cases across the country and right here in the bay area. >> 107 people from 21 states have reported having measles, this comes after a midyear report released by the centers for disease control and prevention shows we could be in

for a rough year. >> chris nguyen is live with more. >> reporter: the disease itself can be deadly, especially for those who haven't been vaccinated. in san jose, the first day of school brings a lot of excitement, but also a sense of anxiety for those who hope kids don't become ill because of another classmate. this year's measles cases are on track to surpass last year's total. officials with the san jose unified school district say parents can relax a little bit. >> it is very, very rare to see measles in schools partially because we are kill gent in getting the immunizations and making sure people are immunized against measles. roughghing anding.thugju, thecd at least 107 people in 21 states, including california, have come down with the measles.

in honolulu, around 67 degrees. the ocean is experiencing marine heat waves, lasting anywhere from a few days to several weeks. a business exodus, the rising cost of living is causing more and more companies to leave the bay area. >> companies like crave, bechtel and jamba juice. the north face is joining in. >> vic lee joins us live with details. vic? >> reporter: well, the north face is simply one of many companies here in the bay area mving operations out of state. the vf corporation which owns the north face says that it's separating two of its independent businesses which it owns, the north face is one of them, that's the one that's moving to denver. there's no telling at this point because there are so few details if there will be any layoffs. the north face's headquarters are here at bay farm. they're owned by vf.

the mayor of alameda was caught by surprise. >> i didn't hear from our city staff first. i heard it from an employee there. >> reporter: at the campus here, the north face, founded in san francisco half a century ago, vf's global innovation center, and jans port, they'll move to denver by 2020. it could mean the loss of 650 jobs here. darrian louie. >> they give their desired management the first option to relocate. and then they'll look at what they want to do with the rest of the employees. they're not mentioning anything right now. >> reporter: some alameda residents were not surprised. >> well, they can get cheaper labor somewhere else, no question about that. >> from a business perspective, it makes sense. >> reporter: especially since colorado reportedly offered the company $27 million in incentives. there was no way alameda could compete. >> we're a city of about 80,000. we're not denver.

>> reporter: the north face is just the latest bay area business looking for greener pastures. j jamba juice moved from i other . oracle's new campus in austin, texas will be as large as ten football fields. facebook will have a $1 billion data center in fort worth. the north face campus most likely will not remain empty. >> already the biotech industry is coming over to the east bay. they're running out of room in san francisco. and south san francisco area. >> reporter: well, we asked a number of employees here if they would comment, if they would respond to this development. all of them told us they were not authorized to talk. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> not surprising there, vic. thank you. we know the bay area's bad roads can cost us. now we know exactly how much.

worried my guys are going to get traded and we've seen this happen before and they're still reluctant to come out. what's your direct plea to them? >> our focus is having a great team that we keep together and build into this new ballpark we will open in 2023. the ballpark allows us to make sure we can retain our talent for many years to come. keep the team together and have players who can be here six, seven, eight, nine, ten years. >> that would be awesome. you are on record as having said that by the end of this calendar year the a's will select a site for the future stadium, whether it's here or someplace else. there's only a few months left in 2018. are you still sticking to that timeline? >> we're working very closely with the city, the port, the county. we have two final sites here at the coliseum and howard terminal. we hope to have an economic deal in place by the end of the year. we're on track for that. >> dave, it's always a pleasure seeing you.

natural rhythm. shall we talk weather? >> i'd love that. as the getting warmer, or will later in the week. live doppler 7. at the moment we've got a little bit of low cloudness at the coast. this is basically a sunny day from coast to inland right now. temperature readings, 66 in san francisco, 64 in half moon bay, low 70s around the bay shoreline. the warmest readings inland are upper 70s to low 80s. it is windy once again. surprise, surprise. we have gusts to 28 miles per hour at fairfield, 26 in san francisco, 21 at novato, 22 in mountain view. all around the region we have this windy pattern. beautiful view from the rooftop camera. the trees along the embarcadero are blowing in the breeze. low clouds overnight and possibly some spotty early morning drizzle. slightly warmer tomorrow and the warming will continue into the weekend with temperatures climbing rather high inland. but first, a look at our forecast animation, overnight, the low clouds and fog pushing locally out over the bay, not

much of an inland push tonight. early tomorrow morning the morning commute beginning, a few patches of fog away from the coastline. but most of it will be at the coast and over the bay and it will pull back to the coastline and away from the coastline during parts of the day tomorrow. so it will be a sunny, and slightly warmer day tomorrow. overnight lows generally mid to upper 50s, a very familiar pattern we've seen overnight for a couple weeks now. highs tomorrow will range from about 60 at the coast to low to mid-70s around the bay. not much of a warmup along the coast. inland, high temperatures upper 80s. inland, east bay, north bay, highs of 85. santa rosa. 95 ukiah. morgan hill will top out at about 90 degrees. here's the seven-day forecast. the jump in temperatures on friday, inland areas mid-90s. upper 70s around the bay. it gets warmer on saturday, upper 90s to near 100 in some

"the new york times" reports the sec is looking into musk's tweet that sent shares fluctuating. a subpoena is considered one of the first steps of a formal inquiry, the statement musk had funding secured may have violated an sec rule saying public statements made by company executives must be true. twitter is now suspending the account of alex jones for a week. twitter says jones tweeted a link to a video calling for supporters to get their battle rifles ready against media and

others. that tweet does violate twitter's rules against inciting violence. last week, twitter defended its decision not to suspend jones saying he did not break any company rules. that decision caused an online backlash, especially since facebook, apple, youtube and spotify suspended jones for using hate speech. aerosmith is ready to hit the stage again. today the band announced they'll take on residency at the park theater in las vegas next april. they will play 18 shows in what's being called aerosmith deuces are wild. tickets range from $75 all the way to $750. going on sale august 24th. the announcement comes a week after lady gaga announced he'll be taking up residency at the same theater in december. possible new emojis for 2019. the uni code consortium, it

live where you live, this is abc 7 news. here are the stories making headlines today at 4:30. a procession this afternoon in ukiah. for a firefighter from utah killed while battling the mendocino complex fire. mark burchett was killed by a tree while fighting the fire. and some breaking news to get to, the chp has arrested someone for a crash that killed an officer during a traffic stop on i-80 friday morning in fairfield. officer kirk griss was killed along the driver he pulled over. another driver hit them. we'll have an update on the investigation in about an hour,

we'll bring it to you here at 6:00. to the east bay, a california bird rescue group is inundated with injured, starving water birds. international bird rescue has treated more than 100 sick birds this year. leslie brinkley will have more at 5:00 p.m. a day of closing arguments in the case of paul manafort, a man is on trial accused of financial crimes, including bank fraud and failing to pay taxes on millions of dollars sheltered overseas. abc news reporter kenneth molten reports from the courthouse in alexandria, virginia. >> reporter: dion, paul manafort's fate will be in the hands of the jury starting tomorrow morning. during closing arguments inside this courthouse, defense claims manafort is the victim, while prosecutors say he was the boss, responsible for defrauding banks

and the government. >> what needs to happen for you to win? >> reporter: the defense team outside the federal courthouse appearing confident the government hasn't proven its case. he's facing the possibility of life in prison. if convicted for financial crimes that allegedly supported his lavish lifestyle. during closing arguments the defense pointing the finger squarely at manafort's longtime business associate rick gates who's cooperating with special counsel robert mueller's team. after he pled guilty to lying to the feds. gates testified he helped manafort hid millions of dollars in offshore accounts. but manafort's lawyers say gates anything to get a lighter sentence. yesterday manafort's lawyers rested without calling one witness in his defense. >> what do you say to those who would say this makes your client look guilty? >> we live in the united states of america, and you're presumed innocent until proven guilty. >> reporter: prosecutors spent the morning in front of the jury painting manafort as a liar who committed bank fraud and failed to report at least $16 million

in income to the irs. the government says the money was from work in the ukraine. but there was barely any reference to the trump campaign during this trial. again, jury deliberations are expected to start first thing tomorrow morning, dion. reporting live here outside the federal courthouse in alexandria, virginia. much more ahead, kenneth, many thanks to you. developing now, president trump is revoking the security clearance of former cia director john brennan. white house press secretary sarah huckabee sanders made the announcement today reading a statement from the president. brennan served in the obama administration, and has been critical of president trump's actions. sanders said the president's decision was based on brennan's, quote, erratic conduct and behavior. >> mr. brennan has a history that calls into question his objectivity and credibility. >> it's an attempt to distract the american public from those items that this white house faces on a daily basis.

>> in a tweet brennan responded he believes this is an effort to suppress freedom of speech and punish critics. the search continues now for people under the bubble of the collapsed bridge in italy. >> 39 people have been killed. >> one man said he only had minor injuries because his car fell between concrete blocks and formed a shield to protect him. >> reporter: it was yesterday in the early morning traffic when a huge section of this bridge suddenly collapsed, taking dozens of cars and trucks down with it. one lucky truck driver in shock managing to slam on his brakes meters away from the edge. at least 39 people have died, dozens injured, many still receiving treatment in the hospital. it was supposed to be a day of celebration. today is one of italy's biggest national holidays, but no one here in genoa is celebrating. the interior minister vows that whoever is responsible will face

justice. the engineers raised the alarm on this bridge, recommending demolition two years ago. this remains a rescue operation. officials have told us that one side of the river bank has been searched. the other side being looked at this morning. many people here still hoping for some happy news. julia mcfarland, abc news, genoa. we are now learning the name of the man accused of crashing and running down people outside of parliament yesterday in london. british media outlets are identifying the suspect as 29-year-old sali cotter. he's a british citizen of sudanese origin. investigators have raided several properties in central england for evidence. this was the fourth vehicle attack in britain in 18 months. school is back in session at mar stoneman douglas high school in parkland, florida. students returned six months after the shooting that killed 17 people on valentine's day.

the dow jones today dropped on words of -- >> if you're scraping together for a house or save for college or retirement, what do you do? >> michael finney is here to explore. >> it's always a question. the dow jones keeps trading at a very narrow band, but still manages to have significant props like the 300 point drop today. to help us understand what's going on, we have theo schwabacher, a morgan stanley financial adviser. let's start with the morning's drop, 300 points here the beginning, came back up to 130 some points. what happened? >> i think people overreacted. >> to what? >> to what's going on in turkey, there was a little fear trade there initially that was a hangover from friday. and we saw, you know, 40% down in the currency in turkey. it came back up about 6% today. and, of course, the numbers that came in for the cpi were pretty

good. and, you know, the market's been in a trading range for a while. the contagion, if you will, from turkey is what people are concerned about. with the trade wars going on it really nets out to about a billion dollars with u.s. still making money on whatever turkey tries to do to us. they're their 34th trading country in the world. it's like going through what we've been through in the past with brexit, italy and greece, they're important countries, but really the contagion is in europe, with the banks over there, not the united states. >> so turkey, their currency dropped 40% in value last friday, right? >> it's been over the entire year. >> but it kind of hit that threshold on friday. so today they were trading off concerns that it was going to somehow affect us here. as you pointed out, that's a billion dollars, not that big a deal. does t show skitt tas been the

most unloved market rally in the history, you know, everybody wants to find things wrong with everything. the fact of the matter is, things are actually pretty good. nobody wants to admit it. when we look at the wages that have increased, all the jobs. >> that just started happening. >> that's right. >> we stayed way low way long. >> for at least nine years. and so they finally started to come up. but you're also looking at surpluses that we're seeing, and certainly, you know, we're creating jobs. we need people -- we need people with expertise, which we don't have. that's the biggest problem we've got right now, finding people to fill those jobs. >> so why is such a -- this small band that seems to go up about 500 points, drops back down, i mean why there? >> well, you know, we had a pretty big year last year. people forget what kind of returns we've had. >> oh, i remember. >> yeah. so, you know, we started out the year, it was up about 8%, and then it dropped down, went flat. and we're up a little bit right now this summer.
