appreciate their service. >> my dad was a fire chief. and so i've had great respect for firefighters and police officers for many, many years. i mean, family gatherings, an alarm would go off and they leave because that's what they're dedicated to do. >> reporter: and now to the live with sky 7, as we continue talking about matty burchett. he was killed when a tree fell on him. he was not the only person to suffer. there were three firefighters from near fresno who were also injured in that same incident. this is six firefighters who have died in california this year. it is an enormous sacrifice. friends tell us, he was very professional, a master of his craft. others described him as the man who kept everyone else safe, which is ironic, considering what we're looking at here

today. they're about to load him onto that c-130 transport plane to fly him home to utah. the family has asked that we don't speak with them, give them their moment of privacy. we'll have more later as this develops. live in santa rosa, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. >> solemn afternoon. thank you very much. this afternoon, firefighters are making progress on the wildfires burning across the state. the mendocino complex of the ranch and river fires have burned 363,000 acres. the river fire is 100% contained. but the ranch fire is only 64% contained. crews contained the ferguson fire this the holy fire is 72% contained. the fresno fire department posted video of its crews protecting home threatened by the ranch fire. you can see how close the fire

is to buildings, the largest fire in california history is threatening more than a thousand structures. it has already the departmen and urban development has formally awarded $99 milli coun. the grants will go toward communities affected by the 2017 north bay wildfires. congressman jared huffman praised the funding as a much needed source of relief for people working to rebuild their lives and homes. larry esquivel was terminated yesterday, the city says, due to a personnel matter, no other details have been released. tracie is in -- he was the former san jose police chief. retired in 2015. tracie selected him to be the city's new police chief in october of 2015. new developments in the case surrounding the murder of keith green. suspects were back in court today. lee, not taking any of our

questions. abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo was in the courtroom? >> reporter: leaving the courthouse wednesday morning, tiffany lee took no questions. she's being charged in the 2016 murder of keith green, her ex-boyfriend, in april 2016 green vanished after meeting with lee about a child custody issue. his body was later found in a sonoma county field with a bullet wound through his neck. shortly after, s.w.a.t. teams raided lee's hillsboro mansion finding enough evidence to arrest lee and her boyfriend. he pleaded no contest. in february he cut a deal with the san mateo district attorney's office that could lead to prosecutors potentially dropping the murder charge against him in exchange for his truthful testimony against lee and byott. lee is the only one out on bail

after having posted property and cash worth nearly $70 million. the case will be delayed from september until sometime next lee will be back in court at 8:30 august 29th for that setting hearing. outside of the haul of justice in redwood city, amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. a pedestrian was hit and killed near sfo this morning. officials say the pedestrian was hit by a vehicle on northbound 101 just after 4:00 this morning. it's not clear why that pedestrian was on the highway. at one point all north bbound lanes were shut down. the pedestrian's identity has not been released. the cds is warning of new measles cases across the country and right here in the bay area. >> 107 people from 21 states have reported having measles, this comes after a midyear report released by the centers for disease control and prevention shows we could be in

in honolulu, around 67 degrees. the ocean is experiencing marine heat waves, lasting anywhere from a few days to several weeks. a business exodus, the rising cost of living is causing more and more companies to leave the bay area. >> companies like crave, bechtel and jamba juice. the north face is joining in. >> vic lee joins us live with details. vic? >> reporter: well, the north face is simply one of many companies here in the bay area mving operations out of state. the vf corporation which owns the north face says that it's separating two of its independent businesses which it owns, the north face is one of them, that's the one that's moving to denver. there's no telling at this point because there are so few details if there will be any layoffs. the north face's headquarters are here at bay farm. they're owned by vf.

the mayor of alameda was caught by surprise. >> i didn't hear from our city staff first. i heard it from an employee there. >> reporter: at the campus here, the north face, founded in san francisco half a century ago, vf's global innovation center, and jans port, they'll move to denver by 2020. it could mean the loss of 650 jobs here. darrian louie. >> they give their desired management the first option to relocate. and then they'll look at what they want to do with the rest of the employees. they're not mentioning anything right now. >> reporter: some alameda residents were not surprised. >> well, they can get cheaper labor somewhere else, no question about that. >> from a business perspective, it makes sense. >> reporter: especially since colorado reportedly offered the company $27 million in incentives. there was no way alameda could compete. >> we're a city of about 80,000. we're not denver.

the dow jones today dropped on words of -- >> if you're scraping together for a house or save for college or retirement, what do you do? >> michael finney is here to explore. >> it's always a question. the dow jones keeps trading at a very narrow band, but still manages to have significant props like the 300 point drop today. to help us understand what's going on, we have theo schwabacher, a morgan stanley financial adviser. let's start with the morning's drop, 300 points here the beginning, came back up to 130 some points. what happened? >> i think people overreacted. >> to what? >> to what's going on in turkey, there was a little fear trade there initially that was a hangover from friday. and we saw, you know, 40% down in the currency in turkey. it came back up about 6% today. and, of course, the numbers that came in for the cpi were pretty

good. and, you know, the market's been in a trading range for a while. the contagion, if you will, from turkey is what people are concerned about. with the trade wars going on it really nets out to about a billion dollars with u.s. still making money on whatever turkey tries to do to us. they're their 34th trading country in the world. it's like going through what we've been through in the past with brexit, italy and greece, they're important countries, but really the contagion is in europe, with the banks over there, not the united states. >> so turkey, their currency dropped 40% in value last friday, right? >> it's been over the entire year. >> but it kind of hit that threshold on friday. so today they were trading off concerns that it was going to somehow affect us here. as you pointed out, that's a billion dollars, not that big a deal. does t show skitt tas been the

most unloved market rally in the history, you know, everybody wants to find things wrong with everything. the fact of the matter is, things are actually pretty good. nobody wants to admit it. when we look at the wages that have increased, all the jobs. >> that just started happening. >> that's right. >> we stayed way low way long. >> for at least nine years. and so they finally started to come up. but you're also looking at surpluses that we're seeing, and certainly, you know, we're creating jobs. we need people -- we need people with expertise, which we don't have. that's the biggest problem we've got right now, finding people to fill those jobs. >> so why is such a -- this small band that seems to go up about 500 points, drops back down, i mean why there? >> well, you know, we had a pretty big year last year. people forget what kind of returns we've had. >> oh, i remember. >> yeah. so, you know, we started out the year, it was up about 8%, and then it dropped down, went flat. and we're up a little bit right now this summer.

but, you know, all in, we're looking for, you know, single digit returns this year. and people shouldn't panic. they need to be cautious and calm. and be consistent about how they invest their money. you get in trouble when you panic. and you know, i'll bet warren buffet's out there buying things today. you should have a list of companies you might like to own at a fair reasonable price. >> he bought a bunch of apple last week or the week before. that's how he's buying. >> he's looking for cash flow, and they've got it. >> theo, thank you very much. >> thank you. >> i don't know if i feel calmer or not, but thank you. >> thank you very much. as the new school year gets under way, vacation might not be at the top of mind. >> taking time off can be good for you and your employer. rebec rebeccaja has the details. >> reporter: we're overworked and uercaoned. last y americans
