get me out of the water, shark, shark. >> witnesses describing the horror and the two recent nursing graduates that jumped into action. baby boom. the nine nurses who work in the same unit at one hospital. all expecting. and which watt are you? football star j.j. watt handed his brother's jersey to sign. so what did he write? good thursday morning. i'm maggie rulli in for diane macedo. >> i'm kendis gibson. we begin with the bre overnight in the disappearance of a pregnant woman and her two young daughters, her husband, chris watt, who tearfully pleaded for his family's return was arrested hours after a television appearance. abc's clayton sandell with the latest. >> reporter: this morning, a colorado man is in custody, reportedly confessing to murdering his family, according to abc affiliate denver 7.

christopher watts allegedly telling investigators he would lead them to the bodies of his wife -- 33-year-old shanann watts. >> hey, everybody. say hi. >> reporter: and their daughters, celeste, 3, and bella, 4. >> we're working round the chock on the case. we will not rest until we have the answer we're looking for. >> reporter: in a tv interview tuesday, watts admitted before the disappearance, he and shanann had heated words. >> we had an emotional conversation. i'll leave it at that. >> reporter: he says he last saw his family 5:00 a.m. on monday. when he left their frederick, colorado, home for work. >> if you're out there, just come back. if somebody has her, just please bring her back. >> reporter: friend nickole utoff says she got worried when shanann, who is 15 weeks pregnant, missed a doctor's appointment and wouldn't respond to texts.

>> i'm just concerned. if you're hearing this, or you're out there, please, please, let somebody know you're okay. >> reporter: her friends tell us her phone, keys, and walt were found here at the family home. the local police here now getting help from the fbi. clayton sandell, abc news, frederick, colorado. >> we expect to learn more about the case at a news conference later today. and now to the other big news that we're following. the former cia director john brennan is calling president trump's decision to revoke his security clearance abuse of power aimed at his critics. >> brennan is vowing to keep speaking out. the white house has named others who may be targeted as well. this morning, the president is linking the unprecedented move to the russia investigation. abc's arlette saenz is following all of this for us from washington. good morning, arlette. >> reporter: good morning, maggie and kendis. former cia director john brennan says he won't be silenced by the president's move. he warns this could send a chilling message to former and current intelligence and national security officials. president trump is yanking the security clearance of one of his fiercest critics.

former cia director john brennan after days of fallout over omarosa's tell-all book. press secretary sarah sanders turned to a statement from the president. citing brennan's quote wild outbursts on the internet. and erratic conduct as reason for the move. >> mr. brennan's line and recent conduct characterized by his increasingly frenzied commentary is wholly inconsistent with access to the nation's most closely held secrets. >> reporter: brennan reacted on msnbc. >> i've seen this type of behavior and actions on the part of foreign tyrants and despots. i never ever thought i would see it here in the united states. >> reporter: brennan, a lifelong intelligence official from the obama and bush administrations, as become one of the president's harshest critics. he's not the president's only targets. the white house rattled off a list of other trump critics who could also lose their security clearance. >> james clapper. james comey. michael hayden. sally yates.

susan rice. andrew mccabe. peter strzok, lisa page, and bruce orr. >> reporter: the president told "the wall street journal" i don't trust many of those people on that list. i think that they're very due police us to. i think that they're not good people. >> those people are being singled out smacks of nixon-ian types of practices. trying to silence anyone who is willing to criticize this president. >> reporter: in the same interview, the president seemed to draw a direct connection between his decision and the russia investigation. saying brennan is one of those he holds responsible for the probe. he says his move was something that had to be done. kendis and maggie? >> it changes the narrative of what was happening in the last week. thank you. the president in the meantime is slamming governor andrew cuomo after the governor took a jab at the trump campaign slogan saying america was never that great. his comments came days after president trump told an upstate new york crowd that cuomo once told him quote i'll never run for president against you.

the governor's office says cuomo believes that america has not yet reached his maximum potential. but that was after he blasted the trump administration. >> we're not going to make america great again. it was never that great. [ cheers and applause ] we have not reached greatness. we will reach greatness when every american is fully engaged. >> president trump responded to this saying that cuomo was having a total meltdown. jury deliberations are set to begin today in the trial of former trump campaign chairman paul manafort. testing the ability of special counsel robert muler to make charges stick. in closing arguments, prosecutors told the jury that witnesses and documents show manafort lied about hiding millions of dollars and lied to banks to secure loans. the defense continued to attack the star witness. meethe burden of proof.t officials art what c

airport. many in arlington, virginia. video posted to social media shows the terminal there is in the dark. emergency power was available to air traffic control and airport security. passengers had trouble getting on to and off of planes because the jetways are run by electricity. the power has been restored -- was restored after about an hour and a half. italy's prime minister has declared a state of emergency for the region where the highway bridge collapsed. searchers worked through the night looking for more bodies. at least 38 people were killed. an unknown number are missing. this shows the bridge before the collapse. and then after. investigators will check if the privately operated bridge was properly maintained. residents near the bridge have been evacuated in case more of it coming down. time now for a look at your weather for this morning. ♪

well, two storm systems could cause problems today across the middle of the country. one brings heavy rain and possible flash flooding to the ohio valley and great lakes. there will also be veer storms in the plains. and those could include strong winds, large hail, and a possible tornado. you can see evansville in the heart of it. checking today's temperatures, plenty of readings in the 80s and 90s. 91 in new york city. 88 in kansas city and denver. some zbln what cooler in the west. ♪ and coming up, when we could see the first apple car. also ahead, breaking overnight, a mass overdose at a city's park. more than 70 people taken to the hospital. what drug do police say they were taking? and the bizarre crash. how did two cars end up slamming into a home?

it's bad enough when one car crashes into your house. but how about two of them? that's what happened to this home in glendale, arizona. police say an 18-year-old man passed out behind the wheel of a volvo and slammed into a white suv, sending both vehicles into the same house. no one was at home at the time. no one was seriously injured. now look at this. two united passenger jets are grounded this morning after one clips the wing of the other at chicago's o'hare airport. one of the jets was pushing back from the gate when it hit a jet parked at another nearby gate. no one was injured.

both pne damaged. >> police in connecticut are warning that a bad batch of synthetic marijuana has caused more than 70 overdoses since early yesterday morning. emergency crews have been treating most of those overdoses in and around a popular park near yale university. they believe the synthetic marijuana, or k-2 is laced with fentanyl. is -- so far, police have arrested one man that they believe is connected to the cases. georgia police are defending the use of a stun gun on an 87-year-old grandmother. syrian-born martha albashara is still recovering. she was tasered while walking toward officers with a steak knife she was using dandelions. police say she did not obey orders to stop and the stun gun was the lowest level of force they could have used. the honda odyssey rates as the top tested minivan. that and the chrysler pacifica both scored solid overall ratings. all according to the insurance institute for highway safety.

massachusetts beachgoer recovering from a shark attack. >> witnesses say the man was about 30 yards from the shore when the shark attacked. chaos on the beach in cape cod. a man swimming off the shores coming face to face with what eyewitnesses describe as a huge shark. >> you hear yelling, get me out of the water. get me out of the water. shark, shark. >> reporter: the victim, a 61-year-old man, suffering puncture wounds to the torso and legs. lucky for the victim, some recent nursing school graduates were also nearby. >> no one was with him. so we kind of didn't think it was a big deal. when we got closer, we realized he was attacked by a shk. needed immediate medical care. >> we grabbed all the towels we could. tried to put them on. stop the bleeding. >> reporter: this photo shows beachgoers and paramedics

carrying the stretcher up the dunes. >> someone had called an ambulance. help was on the way. >> reporter: a booming seal population is a magnet for great white sharks. this would be the first of its kind in massachusetts in six years. several shark sightings reported in the area in recent days. at least two great whites spotted 100 yards off the shore. >> whoa! >> reporter: and this was the scene off the coast of cape cod just last week when a great white jumped out of the water. lunging at this scientist. >> did you see that? >> yeah, we did see that. meantime, a shark expert says the shark may have mistaken that man for a seal or another animal. the beach is still closed today. a hiker is alive after going missing on mount st. helens for six days. matthew matheny of ohio is reportedly hospitalized in good condition this morning. after a dramatic rescue from the side of the mountain. some 40 people were involved in the search for matheny after he didn't return from a hike. he told his parents he got lost.

he survived by eating berries and get this, bees. a massachusetts mom says she had just moments to grab her two kids before their toy car burst into flames. michelle kline said they had take an couple of spins around the cul-de-sac when she saw smoke coming from their toy jeep. she quickly unbuckled them. within seconds, the car was engulfed, burning until it was destroyed. >> that was the scary thing. how fast it went from just a little smoke to a full-on fire. the end of the day, that was where we were at. just glad that everyone was okay. >> you see the piece of charred lawn behind her. that's all that's left. that and some burned metal. distributors of the electric jeep say it's never happened before. it's pulled from all websites as investigators figure out how it started. >> is there nothing sacred? firefighters in danbury, connecticut, helped this little guy get out of a tough spot.

his right arm was stuck inside a smokestack of a thomas the tank engine toy. those toys are on the attack. it took about 20 minutes to get him free. he's doing okay. he went back to playing. >> as kids will do, right? l.a. dodgers' fans are getting a new way to travel to the stadium. elon musk says his construction company is going to build a high-speed tunnel. from east hollywood to dodgers stadium. he says the dugout loop will make that notoriously slow trip in just four minutes. absolutely incredible. says it will handle about 1500 fans when it opens. the capacity will increase. last night's braves-marlins game started with a hit. ronald acuna was plunked on the elbow with the first pitch. the benches emptied out. miami pitcher jose urena was ejected. acuna had quite a streak going. on tuesday, he became the youngest player to hit a home run in five consecutive games. because he had to leave the game, he can still extend his streak tonight. not bad. >> it's not over. >> not at all. >> good luck. up next in "the pulse," the

about three or five degrees in a couple locations. your sun going down at about 8:00 this evening. let's get a check of traffic with sue. >> good morning. we are checking the golden gate bridge where we mentioned thick fog and it is right down on the deck over the waldo grade and roadwork, down to one lane over the waldo and only the left lane halfway across the span. we will check back with chp and see if that is still in effect and a bart delay in a couple minutes. new this morning the chp investigating a crash in cupertino that involves a prius and a caltrans bulldozer. the video shows the driver of the prius appears to be okay. the front driver's side suffered major damage. moran mateo police are warning of a man posing as a ride share driver. he is accused of sexually assaulting a passenger. >> the victim was able to

escape. the suspect, though, is still out there. abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo is live in san mateo. amanda? >> reggie, jessica, the attack happened tuesday night. the victim told police she was picked up by the driver, driven to a secluded area and then she was sexually assaulted. we want to get you to a police sketch of the suspect. take a good look at your screen. investigators say someone who looks like this picked up the woman in san mateo around highway 92. the victim described the suspect as a tall white man in this 30s with a slender build. the woman was able to escape and with the help of a stranger called police. officers found the victim near fashion island boulevard. >> i can't tell you the last time we've had something like this. these incidents are not very common. they don't happen frequently anywhere. especially not here in san mateo. >> reporter: investigators say the attacker was driving a gray

four-door car. it's unclear if it had a posted ride share decal on the car. you'll remember a story out of san francisco a man who police dubbed the ride share rapist. dna evidence connected the suspect in that case to several rapes in the san francisco area. that man was arrested and police are hoping for the same in this case. i'm reporting live from the san mateo police department, amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. >> thank you. new details in the death of a firefighter killed battling the carr fire. a report says jeremy stoke died after getting trapped in a fire tornado. cal fire says stoke made an emergency call the evening of july 26th saying he was getting burned over and needed a water drop. then the call abruptly dropped. cal fire says a swirling monster wall of flames and ash swept down on stoke in seconds. in this video from cal fire shows the ferocity of the inferno.
