wilson will file a lawsuit against barth. her sister was also stabbed in that incident but she was able to survive. the suspect was caught within 24 hours. he's due back in court next week. drivers out on bail after being arrested on charges of killing a highway patrol officer and a man that officer stopped in fairfield. 36-year-old sean walker faces two counts of vehicular manslaughter and they rested him yesterday. he was released on bail. prosecutors believe walker drove recklessly and may have been distracted by his phone. his truckeeid cross westbound i-80 hitting a police officer and the man he pulled over. both victims died. the memorial service for the officer is tomorrow. back to school means backpacks. what if you could make that backpack bullet-proof?

as you know, it's difficult for many people to buy a home in the bay area. maybe we hit a ceiling. prices are starting to fall by double digit percentage points. david has been talking with real estate experts and joins us live with the story. >> reporter: you are right, larry, the bay area real estate market has been a difficult one because of lack of supply as well as fast rising prices. these newest sales numbers are indicating a slowdown may be in the works because of higher interest rates langced of affordability. home sellers remain in a good place, their properties are appreciating as the economy keeps adding jobs. the median sales price rose $186,000 in july compared to the

same month last year, going from $1.1 million to $1.3 million. fast rising prices are making it more difficult for people to buy. interest rates are rising, too. >> we're in the teens in terms of percentage, a population that can afford to buy a property today at the median affordability is very very low. >> reporter: that reality is causing home sales to drown in santa clara county, down 14.6% in one month in june and from last year. from the california association of realtors told us by skype this trend will continue. >> we expect prices to continue to rise and at 2019, albeit at a slower pace but we expect rates will go up.

>> reporter: a year ago homes were selling 22% over the asking price, not today. >> they're still selling over the asking price but only 11% more. doesn't sound like a lot. on a $2 million average property that's a lot of money. in addition, the market has actually doubled more than 18. >> reporter: another factor that may have slowed home sales is tax reform that impacted how much interest and property tax can be economist levin said it may help surrounding areas like east bay where they may find home prices more affordable. david louie. abc news. movie-goers are going crazy over the film, "crazy rich asians." it earned $5 million in opening day yesterday and showing no signs of slowing down.

today through sunday, oakland will be the home of some of the best rowers in the united states. 16 athletes competing in races. it's free, go down and check it out this weekend. this is the first time since 2000 lake merit has hosted the national championships. a year later, the chase center will be the host of the golden state. it's busy now with 1,000 construction worker on site. we were taken on an exclusive tour. here's a sneak peek. >> reporter: we are in coach

during an arraignment hearing today. josh haskell from our sister station was in court. >> reporter: blocked by a computer monitor, 28-year-old gene atkins hears an additional 28 charges have been filed against him at this silver lake trader joe's. >> people versus -- >> reporter: it includes 15 cases of a hostage. because of these additional charges, bail was in to read to $4 million? bail is set at 23 million $155,000. >> reporter: atkins public defender asked for time to collect video. here's atkins at his first court appearance last month when he was charged with murdering the 27-year-old manager of trader joe's and also charged with the attempted murder of his grandmother he shot before leading police in a chase that

ended with a crash at the supermarket. >> reporter: atkins public defender said he was surprised at the additional charges but did not challenge the new bail amount. the next hearing is september 17th. in the east bay, police are looking for a convenience store bandit quite persistent to get his hands on some cash. the police posting this video to youtube today. saying he's responsible for two robberies, one at this chevron station and the second at a little ceasar's pizza place on san pablo. anybody who recognizes this man is asked to contact police. friends, family, colleague, remembering a professor who died. the 76-year-old died after a snorkeling accident last friday. friends are remembering her as an author, historian, activist.

muni riders may notice changes next week and hopefully will like them, most of them. the time for a transfer from 90 minutes to two hours and a new day pass option available for $5. it can't be used on cable cars. discount fares will be calculated at 50% of the full fare meaning some prices will rise a few dollars and single rides will not change. big shipping and oil companies are working with marine experts to protect whales in san francisco bay. some of them are being killed in collision with ships. this is the image that shocked environmentalists last year. an accomplish boat running into a humped back whale, the second in two days. warmer waters possibly linked to climate change could be making the situation more dangerous. >> we have seen food concentrated closer to shore.

the food normally offshore for the whales concentrated close to shore attracted the whales to shipping lanes and very coast to our coastline and into san francisco bay. >> agencies like guard and police and ocean goers are jumping in to police themselves. more than a dozen major shipping and oil companies including chevron and exxonmobil received awards today at the headquarters of the national marine sanctuary for their work in a recently launched program to reduce speeds in ships traveling in coastal waters in san francisco bay. >> we know where the ships are and don't always know where the whales are. we're trying to work with noaa and other agencies. >> reporter: they agreed to reduce speed to 10 miles or less during the whale season. experts say moving at that speed not only gives them more time to see a whale and ups the chances

of survival. >> 10 knots makes the difference between injuring and killing a whale. >> reporter: so far nearly half the shipment in bay area waters is moving at the slower speed. industrialists and environmentalists believe they are charting a saver course for these majestic and vulnerable creatures. >> obviously, no one wants to hit a whale just as someone driving down the highway doesn't want to hit an animal. >> that speed is targeted to those outside the golden gate during whale feeding season, make through november. do you feel lucky? do you? i know it was better when clint said it, but feeling lucky for a number of reasons. >> (sound of footsteps) (sound of car door opening) (car door closes) (sound of engine starting)
