good morning bay area. it's saturday, august 18th. thanks so much for waking up with us. i'm chris nguyen. >> let's check in with drew tuma in for lisa arjen. >> we have fog and visibility and doppler 7 is showing us it's dense. petaluma down to one mile and half moon bay down to zero and that's as bad as it gets. you're good to go and san francisco right now, a live look from the embarcadero camera showing you it is clear from this vantage point and it will feature a lot of sunshine and the cloud cover will not last very long where it is associated with right now. it is warm away from the coast. you will see temperatures well into the bay. we do have some air quality issues with the spare the air day in effect. moderate air quality in the north bay and the coast and poor air quality in the santa clara valleys and you will notice haze

in the atmosphere in the next 24 hours. >> drew, thanks. a vallejo man is in custody this morning charged with stealing a chp cruiser and hijacking a college shuttle bus. it happened in sacramento where the chp was investigating a collision. >> you hear about these things and see them on tv, but as far as actually happening, this is the first time i've seen something like this happen. >> reporter: even the chp couldn't believe the brazen crime 34-year-old air an avitan is accused of pulling off. he stole a chp cruiser that officers were investigating. avitan drove to the campus of sacramento state where he ditched the patrol car and commandeered this shuttle bus from san joaquin delta college telling the ten students onboard he was a police officer. >> we got kidnapped. >> he knew what he was doing. >> the suspect took the wheel

from bus driver mary speck. >> he demanded i get out of the bus now, so i did. and he jumped in and just -- >> a quick-thinking student attacked the man putting him in a choke hold. >> when he choked him we just started hitting him and i took the key and put the car in park. when avitan tried to escape, others on campus who witnessed the carjacking bravely jumped in to stop him. >> two passers by coming from the campus here actually stopped and held the bus doors closed until the police showed up on scene. something this severe, it can go bad really fast, really quick, but it didn't. >> amazingly, nobody was hurt and aaron avitan is being held at the sacramento county jail and his bail is set at $7.8 million. a motive for the bizarre crime is still unknown. cornell bernard, abc 7 news. a three-alarm grass fire

county when a car was left teetering on the edge of a cliff. the chp says the driver of the mini cooper veerd off the road after being cut off by a white mustang. good samaritans reportedly stopped to pull out the occupants. there were no injuries to report. a settlement has been reached in the lawsuit against the santa rosa senior care home that burned during last year's north bay wildfires. 17 elderly residents and their family members sued oakmont senior living accusing staff of villa capri of not taking adequate precautions to evacuate the facility when flames 20 through the complex. the case was about to go to trial. the terms were not made public because the settlement has yet to be signed. the trial for the ghost ship fire defendants is likely to begin next year. derek almena and max harris are

video captured a pod of blue whales swimming and feeding in the bay last wednesday. the whale watch said at least 15 blue whales were spotted and they were seen feeding on the plentiful swarms of krill that swell the monterey bay in the summer. today is 8/18/18. for some the number itself is considered very lucky which is why it is considered to be the most popular wedding day of the year. >> many are expecting it to be the busiest wedding day of the year. the 18th of august and the 18th year of the millennium. china village seafood restaurant in belmont was booked more than a year in advance for a wedding party in saturday and has since turned away 20 couples who wanted the same day. >> for me, it is much easier for me to remember and hey, you forget our wedding day. no because 8/18 is easy to remember. >> reporter: in some cultures the number eight is associated with luck as well as balance.

bay and zero miles visibility and that's as bad as it gets. patchy fog and napa down to three miles and the sun is up and good morning, a live look from the east bay hills camera. i'll flip it over to the golden gate and you can see there's the thick fog along the coast. be aware, it doesn't last all that long and it quickly warms us up and it will quickly pull the cloud cover away from the region. by noon, a lot of sunshine and by 4:00 it is warm to hot across the area. 80s around the bay and the inland going into the upper 90s, but we do have a spare the air day in effect. poor air quality thinks the smoke from the wildfires which will notice some haze in the atmosphere. if you have respiratory issues,well take a look at the forecast in the accuweather forecast. >> california's largest and most destructive wildfires. the carr fire has burned more

than 323,000 acres and is 77% contained. the mendocino complex has burned 330,000 acres and is 76% contained and the holy fire in orange county has burned 33,000 acres and 85% contained. a team from san jose state university is gathering weather data from burn zones to make future fire forecasts accurate. abc 7 news reporter david louie takes a look at what they're doing. >> reporter: while the carr fire continues to burn, fire weather scientist craig clemens moved in with this truck. other instruments onboard are a more ilatmospheric profiling system. they gather weather data to forecast the behavior of wildfires under dynamic weather conditions. >> our goal is to better measure and observe the wildland fire

environment, take those data to basically tune the model. >> he's talking about computer simulation models that will help to predict how fast fires will move and how intense they will be. the carr fire created a tornado rarely captured on video that is an important case study. he was created by unusual conditions, triple digit temperatures and single-digit humidity. and temperatures topping 2700 degrees fahrenheit. he's amazed by the extent of damage that the tornado created, wrapping utility poles around trees while shearing off trucks by matchsticks. >> it's moving because of the circulation and that's why fire whirls and fire tornados and rotating columns are dangerous. >> it may take five years, dr. clemens believes before they have enough data to produce reliable fire forecast. >> we are on the verge of developing the tools, but we

need more observations as fires, wildfires to make those tools more accurate. >> fire behavior is influenced by three factors, climate, popography and fuel load. they have strouinstruments such fuel teches. conditions are at severe levels in much of the state including parts of the santa cruz mountains. clemens is hoping that in the near future, fire rings will carry instruments to provide additional research data. >> with the amount of research still to be done, craig clemens has received a grant from the national science foundation to build a second vehicle like this, but that will be equipped with radar to do more of his ground breaking research. at san jose state, david louie, abc 7 news. california may have the fifth large of the economy, but the state is becoming a dystopia for many families and the reason is the lack of affordable housing. california has the highest rate

of homelessness and poverty in the nation. analysts are calling it a miserable irony. >> it's nothing that will be solved overnight if it is ever solved, but it is something we should be embarrassed about to be as rich as california is and to have the worst poverty should be something of a civic embarrassment. lawmakers must make it more enticing to build more affordable home, but say that's something they've been unwilling to do. in san francisco, renewed arguments for and against the steak safe injection centers for homeless addicts in the city. wayne freedman has more. >> reporter: if you haven't seen her specifically, you have no doubt seen someone like doris roland kelly, and admits to a witch's brew of addictions beyond her control. >> you suffer a lot in life because of your choices and things happen in between and it's quite hard. >> reporter: on paper doris might have help on the way if

glide memorial church opens what they call a safe injection center inside these walls. it would be the first in the nation similar to this one in vancouver, canada, where addicts inject with supervision and support in a safe place that might help break their habit, but not everyone in san francisco wants them. >> we are embarrassed that california has been leading the way in drug addiction. >> reporter: a coalition of opponents launched a full-scale assault. >> our job is not to exacerbate the addiction. our job is to deliver them from this madness. >> pastor ron allen, a former crack addict himself, just one of many who spoke out against safe injection centers. >> we're afraid that this will only worsen the problem because, you know, it will only attract more to come to san francisco. >> reporter: the city and state are looking for a way around that, hence their delay. supporters claim that safe injection centers in other
