coastal clouds early on. we are quickly warming up midday? into the afternoon. it is sunny and warm to hot around the region and our warmest spot is inland heading near 100 degrees and it is a spare the air day in effect and poor air quality in the east bay and the santa clara valley. smoke from the wildfires to the north and notice a haze where that poor air quality is. >> we'll take a look at our afternoon highs and we'll be closer look at what the weekend has in store. >> a vallejo man is in custody charged with stealing a chp cruiser and carjacking a shuttle bus. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard has the story. >> you see it on tv, but as far as seeing it actually happening this is the first time i've seen this happen. >> even the chp couldn't believe what air an avitan is accused of

pulling off. he stole the chp cruisers from stealing a chp cruiser. during the carjack, the crude s cruiser's mirror got knocked off. he drove to sacramento state where he commandeered this shuttle bus from san joaquin delta college telling the ten students onboard he was a police officer. >> we got kidnapped. >> he knew what he was doing. >> the suspect took the wheel from bus driver mary speck. >> he demanded i get out of the bus now, so i did and he jumped in and took off with my bus. >> a quick-thinking student attacked the man putting him in a choke hold. >> when he choked him we just started hitting him and i put the car in park. >> when avitan tried to escape others on campus who witnessed the carjacking bravely jumped in to stop him. >> a few passersby actually stopped and held the bus doors

closed until the police showed up on scene and something like this, this severe, it can go bad really fast and really quick, but it didn't. >> amazingly, nobody was hurt and aaron avitan is being held in a sacramento county jail. his bail has been set at $7.8 million. a motive for the bizarre crime is still unknown. >> cornell barnard, abc 7 news. highway 4 in martinez has reopened after a three-alarm grass fire. it broke out last night near alhambra avenue. contra costa firefighters were able to contain it, but the freeway was shut down around 9:30. the fire was burning near a neighborhood. thankfully, no one was hurt and no homes were damaged. >> when the fire broke out. as always, you can get push alerts and updates on local news by installing the abc 7 news app

on apple and android devices. six restaurants were shut down, those businesses are back open. they're facing an administrative hearing with the health department and district attorney. abc 7 news reporter katie utehs has the details. >> the food court at sun valley mall looks new and it's busy, but last week, a different scene. >> last week there was actually, like, yellow caution tape all around this whole entire area. >> jcpenney employee dolores bennett said she had no idea why. >> we had no knowledge of a rat infestation. >> contra costa county environmental health shut down restaurants due to rats and one from cockroach infestation. >> this is very unusual to have this many facilities in a mall affected at the same time. >> it concerns me a lot because a lot of my coworkers do come here to the food court every day for lunch and it's not healthy. it's not safe. >> the first closures happened

in may and the most recent, last week when an inspector actually saw a live rat while investigating a complaint. in addition to other evidence of rodent contamination. >> there's obviously a systemic problem and not just individual restaurants. it's involving the mall itself. >> mall management shared this statement. tenants are responsible for complying with all health department regulations. upon learning of the situation, our management team stepped in to help quickly remedy the situation and the food court is open after receiving clearance from the inspector. businesses are back open. >> we wouldn't let them reopen unless we felt it was safe for the consumers to go back. >> the business owners do face an administrative hearing with the district attorney as health officials try to make sure this doesn't happen again. we should also add that there were no reported illnesses linked to this con tam nation. we have created a story on our website that contains the entire list of affected businesses. in concord, katie utehs, abc 7

news. >> our time is 8:05. the suspect in a fatal hit and run in the tenderloin neighborhood has been charged with murder. 41-year-old michael smith was in court yesterday and the charges stem from a tuesday night accident that killed 65-year-old gregory blackman. court documents allege smith's wife warned him not to drive while thinking in oakland and he continued to drink on the drive to san francisco. >> tense moments in san mateo county when the car was left teetering on the edge of the cliff. sky 7 was teetering over the cliff in half moon bay. the driver of the mini cooper veered off the road after being cut off by a white mustang. good samaritans stopped to pull the occupants out and there are no injuries to report. a settlement has been reached in a lawsuit against a santa rosa senior home in the wildfires. 17 elderly residents and family

members sued oakmont senior living of not taking adequate precautions to eradicate the facility. the case was about to go to trial and terms were not made public because the settlement has yet to be signed. >> the trial for the ghost ship fire defendants is likely to iss begin next year. they've been charged with involuntary manslaughter. an oakland judge threw out plea deals agreed upon by both suspects. almena's attorney wants to make a motion for the move in november. >> potential jurors in alameda county for the most part have absorbed all of the assassination of character attributes manifested in the press of my client. they have an opinion. >> the defense has mentioned courts in san jose, redwood city and martinez as potential

locations, both defendants will be back in court next month likely to set a trial date. happening today, richmond police will host a gun buyback events and people can turn in guns for gift cards later today and up to 100 bucks for gift cards will be given for each rifle, shotgun and handgun and $200 will be exchanged for each assault weapon. the metal will be melted and repurposed for material for art. it will be in the plaza in richmond. the family of nia wilson, the woman killed at a bart station last month, is now suing month. the attorney blames fare evaders and lack of security. he claims to have two witnesses who interacted with wilson's suspected killer john cowell. one said cowell threatened to slit her throat. neither could locate station agents. hundreds mourned a chp officer who died yesterday -- hundreds mourned a chp yesterday

15th near the upper pines campground. last week the park service reported san jose resident scott tenczar missing, as well. he was last seen july 25th before a planned hike from robinson creek. time now is 8:10. two bay area communities are banning round up. venetia and solano county and novato both announced they will discontinue using the weed killer. its main ingredient was at the center of $290 million awards to a bay area man who said it causes cancer. both communities plan to use safer or natural alternatives. >> east bay lawmaker is calling for more testing of potentially radioactive soil in pittsburgh. it came from the hunters point naval shipyard. last year they released a statement saying soil samples were manipulated before being sent to the landfill in pittsburgh. he wants the navy to conduct a

former secretary-general of the u.n. and nobel peace prize winner kofi annan has died. his foundation announced his death in a tweet early this morning saying annan died after a short illness. his wife and their three children were by his side during his last days. annan fought for a fairer and more peaceful world. he was a member of the elders. that's the group founded by nelson mandela which is committed to building peace and advancing human rights. annan was 80 years old. a funeral for aretha franklin will be at the end of the month. the funeral itself will be limited to family and friends

half moon bay. at 1:00 will stop the time and you see the cloud cover just right along the coastline and elsewhere, we're seeing tons of sunshine and into the afternoon we will get sunshine along the coast and the sun efficient at warming us up. starting in the south bay, it will be hot in morgan hill and 99 degrees and warm in san jose and 85 in cupertino for sunshine. 83 for mountain view to start out the weekend and 82 and half moon bay up to 62 degrees. downtown san francisco will reach 70 later today and it is mild in the city and 63 with daley city and 88 for petaluma in the north bay and it is hot in calistoga, and 88 in san rafael. mind you, these numbers are five degrees above average for this time of the year. >> into the east bay, it is warm and sunny today. 76 for oakland. about 86 in arinda and it's downright hot as you move inland

good morning, south bay. let's get up and get going. >> this is abc 7 mornings. thanks so much for being with us, i'm chris nguyen. a quick look at the accuweather forecast. here's drew tuma as we begin our saturday morning. >> good morning, chris. we are tracking a warm afternoon on the way, but this morning we have an issue with fog along our coastline. we'll switch it over to visibility mode on live doppler 7. we continue to see the fog very thick around half moon bay. elsewhere, we're doing a-okay where you're seeing the number ten as good as you can get with visibility, however, we'll take you to the walnut creek camera. we will have issues with air quality. the 12-hour day planner features a lot of sunshine.

it will be warm in the afternoon and you look at that temperatures around the bay into the 80s and our warmest spots inland closing in on 100 degrees, but the spare the air day is in effect today and poor air quality is forecasted for the east bay and santa clara valley. you saw the haze from the walnut creek camera. if you have respiratory issues please take it easy. we'll take a look at how the second half of the weekend is shaping up. >> there has been steady progress in containing some of california's largest and most destructive wildfire. >> the carr fire has burned more than 224,000 acres and is 79% contained. the mendocino complex fires have burned more than 331,000 acres. containment is at 76% and the holy fire in orange county has burned 23,000 acres and is 85% contained. climate scientists in san jose are working hard to provide more tools to help firefighters deal with the erratic nature of wildfires.

a team from san jose state university is gathering weather data from burn zones to make future fire forecasts more accurate. abc 7 news reporter david louie takes a look at what they're doing. >> reporter: while the carr fire continues to burn, fire weather scientist dr. craig clements moved in with this truck in search of data. the weather system and other instruments onboard are a profiling system. they gather weather data to help forecast the behavior of wildfires under dynamic weather conditions. >> our goal is to better measure and observe the wild land fire environment. take those data to basically tune the model. >> reporter: he's talking about computer simulation models that will help to predict how fast fires will move and how intense they will be. the carr fire created a tornado rarely captured on video that is an important case study. he was created by unusual conditions and triple digits temperatures and single digit. hume inity.

the temperatures topping 2700 degrees fahrenheit. he's amazed by the extent of damage the tornado creating f ff whirls and bushing like matchsticks. >> it's moving in a circulation so that's why fire whirls and fre tornadoes can rotating columns are dangerous. >> it may take five years, dr. clements believes, before they have enough data to produce reliable fire forecasts. >> we're on the verge of developing these tools, but we need more observations at fires, wildfires to make those tools more accurate. >> reporter: dr. clements says fire behavior is influenced by three factor, climate, popography and fuel leadie loads, they'll have these to figure out how fast trees and other combustible matter will burn. >> including parts of the santa cruz mountains. in the near future fire rings

and say that's something they're unwilling to do. time now is 8:34. in san francisco renewed arguments for establishing safe injection centers for homeless addicts in the city. abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman has the story. >> reporter: if you haven't seen her specifically, you've no doubt seen someone like doris rowland, she's wandered for 20 years and admits to a witch's brew of addictions beyond her control. >> you suffer a lot because of your choices, but i mean, things happen in between and it's quite hard. >> on paper might have help on the way if the memorial church opens what they call a safe injection centeren side these walls and it would be the first in the nation, is imlar simila one where they can inject in a safe place that might help break their habit, but not everyone in san francisco wants them. >> we are embarrassed that california has been leading the way in drug addiction.

happening today. law enforcement officers from around the world are in san francisco to show off their motorcycle riding skills. today is the last day of sfpd's international police motorcycle skills competition. officers pay an entry fee to compete. that money goes to the police department's wilderness adventure youth april. you can check out the action up close and it starts at 9:00 this morning at pier 32. smart trains in the north bay will be free this weekend to celebrate the first anniversary of service. today smart will also hold a festival from 9:00 a.m. to p.m. with beer and wine.

>> drew, thanks. how many passwords do you have and how would you like to trade them all for just one ultra secure password? it's possible, but 7 on your side's michael finney says you have to really want it. >> we're told to have a different password for every website. a good idea, but hard to keep track of, so there are password managers. they securely hold our passwords and dole them out and the set up process, that can be challenging. for the life of me i don't see how you're supposed to save this. joe is with consumer action. he agreed to look at password managers while i followed along and kept track. >> this is not a very easy or straightforward process. this is not very intuitive. >> exactly what i experienced when i downloaded several password managers myself.
