>> smoke from the california wildfires is making the air in some parts of the bay area unhealthy. >> lisa ar jenn has a c has a cc conditions. >> yes, the smoke is all the way in the atmosphere up to 7,000 feet. we have high pressure, a big dome of it bearing down over the bay area. that's allowed for temperatures to rise in our inland valleys as much as 7 degrees. with the extra heat, poor air quality in the east and south bay. we have a 43 degree temperature spread from half moon bay to gilroy. 65 in san francisco. the marine layer continues to deepen but it will take another day or so for the air quality to improve. we have another spare the air alert in effect for your sunday. and we do have better news for the week ahead. details in a few minutes. >> lisa, thank you very much. there's staggering new figures about california's wildfire season. the u.s. forest service reporting overnight the estimated total area burned in

california this year has surpassed 1 million acres. >> the largest wildfire in state history, the mendocino complex fires grew slightly overnight. it is 76% contained and has scorched 595 square miles. the smaller of the two fires is fully contained. the forest service says soil scientists and ecoses are among the team of people addressing potential environmental ricks. >> containment is up to 79% at the carr fire that destroyed more than 1,000 homes in the redding area. it's grown to 350 square miles since july 23rd. fire spreads remains within vegetation inside the burn areas. >> flags lowered to half-staff around the world to honor a pioneering humanitarian. kofi annan, the first black african to lead the united nations died today at age 80 after a short unspecified illness. >> and led the u.p. u.n.

rangers and firefighters combined forces today to rescue a horse that had fallen and couldn't get up. that horse fell on a narrow section of trail in the point reyes national seashore. it was unable to stand back up because of the terrain and the slope of the trail. firefighters and park rangers managed to put a sled under the horse and move the animal to wider flat ground. the horse immediately stood up and began eating and drinking. a family dispute led to a shooting this morning in san francisco. police say the suspect is the 85-year-old uncle of the victim. it happened just before 9:00 this morning on fell street. the victim's a 49-year-old man who is expected to survive. abc7 news was in richmond for a gun buyback event. no questions asked of anyone who dropped off a weapon. guns were exchanged for gift cards. police wanted to see assault weapons and while a few were turned in, there was one big surprise. >> in fact, we just received a bazooka that's in our mobile

command center. and this event's been very successful so far. it's even better this year. >> the buyback was cosponsored by a foundation that receives the dee missed weapons from police and mes them down for artist who's turn the metal into art of peace. >> police in berkeley making a plea to residents to register home security cameras to be used to help find suspects involved in crimes. residents will be asked whether they're willing to share video footage with investigators in the event of a crime. registering is free and personal information submitted to police will be kept confidential. the city launched a reg industrial this week following the lead of many other communities. >> today san francisco recognized the founder of the oldest african-american bar in the city by renaming a street after him. sam jordan's bar has been in business since 1956, but jordan was more than a bar owner. he was a longshoreman, a golden gloves boxing champ and prune

and the first african-american to run for mayor of san francisco in 1963. the supervisor who led the fight to designate sam jordan's as a landmark spoke at today's event. >> sam jordan's was not just the local neighborhood watering hole but it was also a place where communities came together. that's what makes this location so significant and so historic. >> galvez street off third is now known assam jordan's way. the rio vis tas bridge connecting solano and sacramento counties is open again after an overknew the closure for now anyway. cal trans workers had to do emergency work on the drawbridge when a gearbox that raises and lowers the bridge broke. crews had to use winches and pullies to manually raise the span. contractors blame the old age for the broken gearbox. cal trans says the bridge will close again tonight at 10:00 p.m. and reopen monday at 3:00 a.m. after repairs.

candidates in orange county. according to reuters the hackers infiltrated the campaign computers can of david min and hans keer stead, both democrats, both competing for seats in the republican leaning orange county. the hackers managed to install software in campaign computers that recorded keystrokes. investigators don't know what information was obtained. both districts are seen as competitive battlegrounds in the upcoming midterm elections. >> twitter's ceo jack dorsey denied accusations paid by president trump that the media giant bans is users plaus because of their political leanings. he explained their decisions are not driven by any political ideologies. it says twitter provides a forum for people to express opinions within the rules it's established. >> are we doing something according to political ideology or viewpoints. we are not. we do not look at content with regards to political viewpoint or ideology.

we look at behavior. >> dorsey also emphasized that social media and tech companies need to be transparent and they should explain their decisions and articulate goals. >> a mother says she's living a nightmare in southern california after i.c.e. agents arrested her husband while he was drubing her to the hospital before their son's birth. maria delcarmen and her husband had left their home so she could give birth to her son by c-section. before they got to the hospital, they pulled into a convenience store parking lot. surveillance footage shows two vehicles surrounding them and agents taking her husband into custody. a tv reporter translated for her. >> she says her husband has no criminal hust and that police have never stopped him. he's never had a ticket. >> you can see her crying on the phone after her husband was taken away. she drove to the hospital before giving birth to her fifth child. her husband is still in custody. >> in east bay landmark that

we are looking at low clouds, fog at the coast. boy, is it hot inland. we are looking at temperatures today. it was 101 in gilroy. we saw the 50s at the coast. so we will be looking at a minor cooldown helping to mix out the smoke that is preb len throughout much of the bay area today due to the light winds and a strong dome of high pressure. 94 in danville. 85 in fremont with 63 in san francisco. 80s in the south bay and spare the air alert today because of light winds and big dome of high pressure. the winds kick up allowing the marine layer to spread across the bay. the cooling continues monday and tuesday. even some mist and drizzle and looking at a seasonal pattern for the rest of the week. overnight tonight, that fog makes an impact as it pushes across the bay and waking up to the gray sky tomorrow morning. we will notice that cool down but as we look at air quality

forecast tomorrow, notice the sacramento valley looking at oranges for the worst air quality. closer to home, you notice it's in the inland east bay. livermore and san jose has poor air quality. everyone else mod reality quality. it will be improving later on tomorrow. 50s tonight with the low clouds and fog set up along the coast. a quick look at the tropics. a major hurricane lane in the pacific with winds 140 miles hour. a category 4. weakens to a 3 on monday. and tuesday. but still going to create very big waves and perhaps some rain around some of the islands. so check that out if you're headed that way. 94 in morgan hill. 82 in sunny veil. peninsula fog at the coast. upper 70s san mateo. san francisco mild in the 60s and in the north bay, better air quality. certainly hazy today. 88 in santa rosa. still a spare the air alert.
