click, call or visit a store today. live where you live, this is abc 7 news. >> community groups calling for change at the santa rita jail. the nearly two mile walk protesting the release of female inmates in the early morning hours. good evening and thanks for joining us. >> the push for change comes nearly one month after the death of a young woman. >> she was released from jail on july 28th around 1:30 in the morning. hours later she was found dead. tonight her parents and state senator held a vigil. >> katie is live from the jail with what they are hoping to accomplish. >> reporter: they'd like a change of policy or change of law regarding overnight inmate

releases. while st. james death was ruled there was not foul play involved, it does highlight the issue of releasing vulnerable people at an hour when services are not available to help them. a large crowd gathered in both vigil and protest. in late july, jail deputies released jessica st. louis around 1:30 in the morning. four hours later she was found dead. the coroner has ruled out foul play, saying the death appears to be an overdose. her mother says her death, however, was preventable. >> we're terribly shocke by the situation that took place, for them to release her at such a late hour in the morning. as you cansee,t totally dark with just a bart ticket and no cell on care who you are.

people that live near the bridge. >> reporter: the man is facing multiple charges. and the police say he was a part of a show. we witnessed some of it while we were shooting our story. engines revving and tires screeching. three cars shut down traffic on the bay bridge when instead of continuing rest into san francisco, they decided to drive in circles across all five lanes at 10:45. >> by the time we got there, most of the vehicles had already fled the scene. >> reporter: but the driver of the white pterygomustang crashe broken axle and was unable to get away. >> fortunately had several good videos taken by bystanders that were able to help us document what happened and it will help us with filing some of the

charges, including reckless driving, providing false information and driving without a license. he was treated for minor injuries that he got during that sideshow. reporting live in san francisco, abc 7 news. >> highway parole officers arrested two drivers on suspension of racing at interstate 580. the cars were pulled over. both drivers were taken into custody and will face reckless driving and speeding charges. their cars were impounded for 30 days. >> family, friends and class mates paid tribute to two high school graduates killed in a tragedy being blamed on underage drinking. antio antioch's deer valley high school. today would have been his 18th birthday, one he shared with his twin brother dominic.

a man is recovering from a gunshot wound following a shooting outside a house party. abc 7 news reporter spoke to surprised neighbors. >> i have never heard of a shooting here before. >> this doesn't happen on fifth avenue. >> an early morning shooting was a shock to many. >> i fell asleep around midnight. i was spoken to an argument between two men screaming really loud. >> this neighbor thought a fight was unusual. but hours later at 3:00 a.m., that fight escalated. >> a woman in particular with curdling. and i hear two -- it sounded like gunshots, and then everything was quiet.

>> investigators say a 20-year-old man was shot after a fight broke out on the street near this home. but the vtim vanished before officers arrived. >> we didn't get a subsequent phone call from the hospital where a victim showed up with a nonthreatening gunshot wound. he's going to be fine. >> neighbors say residents of this house were having a party on saturday. >> last night there was a big party when we walked by. >> one man from washington state who police say was visiting the home was arrested. >> there was a male who was arrested for being a convicted felon in possession of ammunition. >> police aren't sure if he played a role in the shooting. they continued to look for shootings. >> police got a search warrant for this home. they are looking for evidence, a motive for the crime is still unknown. a father and son barely made it out of ghlassier national pak

in montana. >> the car is heating up. it is beginning to exmode. >> that is they were backpacking. then the winds sifted. both men hopped back into the car and escaped the names. at one point driving in reverse down a narrow mountain road. >> when i put the car in reverse and looked out the back window, i couldn't see anything. somehow i was able to stay on the road. >> today more evacuations were ordered. firefighters have built a fire break to keep flames from spreading further. more than 7,000 acres have burned. crews battling the ferguson wild fire say the fire is now 100% contained. the wild fire started on july 13th. two firefighters died in the fire that grew to 151 square miles. on august 5th, the national park

service closed indefinitely due to smoke and the fire closing roads into the park. a quick update on some of the other major wild fires still burning. the ranch fire has charred more than 524 square miles. it is 76% contained. cal fire expects full containment by september 1st. crews continue to make progress on the deadly car fire. it has burned 355 square miles since starting july 23rd and 185% contained. >> we know heat was problem for a firefighter. let's see what it's going to be like now. >> lisa. >> a deeper marine layer and increased air flow all working to allow for cooler air and that marine layer to be transported further, helping in the efforts for the firefighters was temperatures will be coming

down. in fact, they already came down today as much as eight degrees. here is a look at doppler 7 all the way down the peninsula and pushing over into the east bay right now, widening the perspective. it is all the way down to santa barbara. bring the numbers a bit below average. as we look at our 24 temperature change we're anywhere from two to nine degrees cooler at this hour. so certainly a better day today. still you had that haze and smoke, but tomorrow will not be a spare the air day. as we look at the numbers, plenty of 50s. even with the southwest wind at 16, it is 59 here in fair field with 66 in clear lake. you will be waking up to gray sky as well tomorrow. better air quality on the way for monday. temperatures trending down throughout the week.

no extremes for the rest of the week. that means we will take the 90s out of our inland valleys. we may get close to that, but it will be a better week in terms of the extremes. you will notice the low cloud and fog deck reaching into the north baby tomorrow afternoon. tomorrow morning, i should say and across into the bay. it's going to pull back. it should be slow clearing. as a result, temperatures in the morning hours will be cool. temperatures going back to school, have to bring the jacket early. another update for you where this continues to weaken. it is a category three. 120 miles an hour winds. moving to the west at 14 miles an hour. south of hilo. around maui, you could get high surf and high waves. some of the schools back in session next week. 80 in santa clara.

them. justin verlander and matt chapman took this off the center field wall. khris davis followed two batters later, 35th of the season. the a's go up 2-0. verlander lasted five and a third. he gave up four runs. that was a three-run variety. well, the a's get it back in the bottom half of the inning. it's davis yet again. number 36 on the season for him ties it up at four. in the top of the fourth, gattis puts the astros ahead with a solo shot. he gave up two today. oakland had a chance to do damage in the sixth. they road in the bases but with two out, he struck out against brad peacock. that would end the inning. astros would hit three more home runs off emilio pagan.

24 last weekend. today would have been one victim's 18th birthday. a young woman faces charges in their deaths. >> community activists demanded change. they want the county sheriffs office to stop releasing inmates in the middle of the night. their outrage follows the death of a woman hours after she left the jail. two cities are no longer using round up following a ruling against the manufacture. earlier this month a jury awarded a former school district grounds keeper with terminal cancer $289.2 million. abc 7 news reporter has more on a new organic approach. >> these small faces are a huge motivation. >> there is a saying that you put your money behind your values and in our community we value the environment. we value protecting our children. >> in an effort to do so, the city will no longer use the weed

for responsible action after allegations of child sexual abuse. >> we have listened to them carefully. second of all, we have removed priest from ministry. third of all, we have turned it over to the district attorneys of appropriate counties. >> the report lists several cases it alleged were mishandled. first as a priest and later as bishop. two years in the making, that report finding more than 1,000 children abused by 300 catholic predator priests in six diocese over the past 70 years. robert criticizing those who stayed silent. >> in 2016 the pope announced that he was going convene a commission on bishop accountability. it never happened. >> the pennsylvania report coming amid another sexual abuse scandal. former washington, d.c. cardinal accused of molesting both adolescent boys

friend aretha franklin today. franklin known as the queen of soul died on thursday. the 76 year old suffered from advanced pancreatic cancer. >> a british woman says she's lucky to be alive after falling from a cruise ship and do the sea. a 46 year old woman said she went ten hours treading water overnight waiting to be rescued. it is not clear how she fell overboard. finding her did not immediately happen. >> i fell off the buck of the norwegian star and i was in the water for ten hours. so these wonderful guys rescued me. your name is? >> kay. i am very lucky to be alive. >> the woman was taken to the hospital. the cruise ship company says she is uninjured and in good spirits

it's a pitching matchup seemingly perfect for the game to decide the division leader. justin ver land against the a's shawn manea. matt chapman and khris davis both connected off verlander. davis with his 35th. brought the a's up 2-0. verlander gave up four runs. shawn gave up four runs. four of those in the third inning. shot this three run home run to put the astros up by two. so theba in the bottom half of the inni thanks to mr. davis yet again. this one ties it up at four. but the a's gave up five home runs today. pagan allowed three of those. m.
