san francisco public schools welcomed students back this morning kicking off a new school year for more than 50,000 kids. i'm kristen sze. thanks for joining us. drivers are urged to be extra careful around campuses all this week as police step up traffic enforcement to ensure chairmhuus safety. there are new programs and emphasis this year. for more, we'll go live to amy hollyfield at hillcrest

elementary school. amy? >> reporter: hi, there was a lot of talk this morning about things like innovative learning and goals, but that was the adult talk. it was the children and their eagerness that really stole the show. listen to this earnest answer we got from a cutie pie when we asked him how he was feeling on this first day of school. >> well, i'm kind of feeling nervous and also excited because new year, new me. >> reporter: that's how jaden trotter started his fifth grade year this morning at hillcrest elementary school. it's that kind of enthusiastic attitude the superintendent enjoys seeing for himself. so he toured a few schools like hillcrest on this first day. >> do it throughout the year, but definitely on the first day. i want to be amongst the students. >> reporter: dr. vincent mathews first watched a third-grade class approach math with an innovative problem-solving method. next, he stopped by the wellness center where students' mental health is the priority. jaden was happy to lead the tour

even though when we asked him what a superintendent does, he wasn't quite sure. >> superintendent is like, they want to know about stuff. they like come to places and ask people what is this about. >> reporter: when we told him the superintendent is the boss and asked what he'd like to change, jaden said he'd lightning to see more play structures. we asked a mom the same question. her focus was on security. >> you know, like keeping the school safe and -- last year we had a crazy guy come on campus, try to kill a kid. i -- to his car. so we try to keep the school safe. >> reporter: we asked dr. mathews about answering to such a wide range of opinions. >> part of doing this job is to do everything we can to keep the pats on the back, the good things we're, do keep those things going. also to look into the areas we need to improve and try to keep making things better.

>> reporter: he says his goal this year is that all students are thriving. so here we are with a clean slate, everyone has ideas and goals. the superintendent says they really do look at today like it is new year's day. live in san francisco, amy thank eld, abc7 news. san francisco muni says service in the city is normal this morning. that's after san francisco unified warned students and staff that there could be delays because of an ongoing driver shortage. muni officials estimate half of the school district's 57,000 students use public buses or light rail to get to and from school each day. today a bay area law firm files suit against the spa chain massage envy. this after dozens of customers across the country accused its massage therapists of sexualmion ore live from the san mateo courthouse in redwood city. matt? >> reporter: yeah, this is a major lawsuit, and the attorneys in this case are looking for

more alleged victims to come forward. >> this lawsuit seeks to give a voice to all the women in california who were sexually assaulted at a massage envy. >> reporter: attorneys bobby thompson and brian kent today say seven unnamed women have come forward claiming sexual misconduct from massage therapists at massage envy franchises in southern california, sacramento area, and the bay area, and claims that range from inappropriate touching to rape during their appointments. the attorneys say the massage therapists at the burlingame location raped the client. hee was arrested and faces -- he was arrested and faces 14 charges including sexual battery by fraud. complaints were made against the pe yethe hwastillclient was ald conti worki at massage envy. >> if somebody reports an assault by a therapist, why is that not being reported to the police or massage therapy board?

it creates an atmosphere that allows predators to continue doing what they're good at which is deceiving people into sexually assaulting customers at these locations. >> reporter: massage envy has 25,000 mass am -- massage therapists, and buzzfeed last year revealed more than 180 people nationwide claim they were sexually assaulted at a massage envy. wreeched out for a statement -- we reached out for a statement, while they weren't able to comment on active litigation, they said, "we remain committed to our commitment to safety plan which is further strengthening our existing policies. safety and will always be our priority, and we will never stop working on it." the next hearing is in september. >> thank you. san rafael police are looking for the gunman responsible for a shooting that took place outside a house party. it happened yesterday in the sun valley neighborhood near 5th avenue and j street. a woman who lives nearby heard

two men arguing before the gunfire broke out. >> a woman in particular with terrifying yells, just blood curdling. and i heard two -- sounded like gunshots, and then everything was quiet. >> investigators say a 20-year-old man was hit. he's expected to survive. police arrested the man from washington state who was visiting the home. the investigators are not sure if he pleaded in shooting. an update on the mendocino complex fires. the archer fire is 74% contained -- the ranch fire is 74% contained. the river fire is 100% contained after burning 49,000 acres. late last night, cal fire issued new mandatory evacuations. they're in the area you see in the orange. north of the glen colusa county line, east of the mendocino national forest foundry, south of county road 308, and west of county road 306.

♪ right now, a funeral is taking place this morning for vo was killed earlier this month battling the mendocino complex fires. battalion chief matthew burr chet died after he was hit by a tree. firefighters throughout utah and the nation are attending the service in west valley city. he leaves behind a wife and a young son. take a look at this now. these are the latest numbers in the carr fire burning in shasta and trinity counties. the fire has burned nearly 230,000 acres and is now finally getting close to full containment, but still only at 88%. our meteorologist here now in for mike to talk more about the air quality from these fires and, of course, the fog that we're looking at in san francisco. >> yeah. we continue to have wishes air quality thanks to smoke from the mendocino complex fire moving into the atmosphere. the good news -- we will see improving conditions in the coming day. i want to show you satellite, you see the imagery overhead, that smoke right outside ukaia. that is the mendocino fire

complex. and that is what is filtering into our neck of the woods locally. you see the haze from time to time, that means we have moderate air quality across the board. if you have respiratory issues, you want to take it easy as you're out and about today. the good news, we'll see refreshing onshore winds pick up on tuesday, and that's going to help to get some of the smoke out of here. improving air quality the next 24 hours. what's also improving are visibility. earlier we had dense fog in the north bay and along the coast. visibility is on the rise. good news there. the fog is lifting. temperaturewise, still chilly in san francisco. 55. 64 in san jose. 62 in oakland. this afternoon, sunnier skies, but fog will roll back later tonight and usher in even cooler air as we head into tuesday. we'll take a look at how warm we get and the cooler air approaching tomorrow. that's coming up. we just learned that district attorneys from several counties across california plan to give an update on the golden state killer case tomorrow

morning. the suspect, 72-year-old joseph james deangelo, is in a sacramento county jail. he's accused of several murders and relationships across the state in the 1970s and '80s. the d.a.'s news conference will take place in santa ana. it starts at 11:00 a.m. happening now, a fundraiser is taking place to help the family of a fallen chp officer. dutch bros coffee is offering a fundraiser. the chain will donate $1 from every drink sold. he died in fairfield on august 10th. a pickup truck him hit after he made a traffic stop. the man who was stopped was also killed. the jury in the paul manafort trial is back to bork to decide his fate. president trump's former campaign chairman is accused of tax and bank fraud. abc has the latest from the federal courthouse in alexandria, virginia. >> reporter: day three of jury dla deliberations in the case of paul manafort. the jurors parring over a mountain -- pouring over a mountain of evidence, nearly 400 exhibits. the former trump chain chairman is accused of tax and bank fraud, allegedly stashing money in offshore bank accounts. prosecutors and special counsel robert mueller says manafort failed to pay taxes in millions. he defrauded banks out of millions more. crimes the government claims manafort allegedly committed before his work for the president. >> i think it's a sad day for our country. >> reporter: friday, the president weighed in. >> he happens to be a very good

skies later on this afternoon. outside we go. a live look at san rafael at this hour see something sunshine breaking out. the north bay, a similar story. say hello to the south bay. san jose, morning cloud cover. getting brighter peeks of sunshine out there. we'll make it to the 80s in the subway tod -- in the south bay today. cloud cover in san francisco. we're on the chilly side, only 55 in the city. 62, mainly cloudy in oakland. 64 in san jose. where the sunshine was breaking out earlier, brentwood at 6. hour by hour -- 76. hour by hour, we'll time it out by 1:00 this afternoon, away from the coast, lots of sunshine. even a few breaks for sunshine right along the immediate coastline. then to the evening hours, 6:00, we expect fog already rolling in and encompassing san francisco and patchy fog ind around the east bay shoreline. as we head toward the later hours of monday night, the marine layer intensifies and deepens. that means fog will return overnight into tuesday. highs today with the sunshine breaking out will begin the warming process after a cool

it's baking. the question -- if we put this thermometer inside of the stroller, put the cover down as you would when baby's napping, and cover it when a blanket, how hot will it get inside? this blank set a thin muslin. it seems breathable. i check under the blanket after just ten minutes. wow. it's 98, 99 degrees. it's gone up almost ten degrees. that's hot for a baby. we tried the same thing with a thick blanket thinking it will be much hotter. but -- 102. only a little bit hotter than the thin muslin blanket on top. what's interesting, there's no baby here. so there's no breath being ex l expell expelled, no 98-degree heat generator. meaning that stroller seat could get even hotter. if you think walking ventilates the stroller, think again. ten minutes of walking, we checked the temperature again. wow. 100 degrees. pediatricians say there isn't an exact temperature that will

cause a child to overheat, but it's never a good idea to cover a stroller with a blanket. >> babies regulate heat as well as adults do. >> reporter: while we don't know how many children overheat from being covered in strollers, it's important to remember that heatrash and heatstroke can happen in a flash. >> the baby's going to get flushed. the heart rate's going to start to go up. and then they might start to act confused and not be really with it. >> an important safety warning there. we've seen a lot of legendary first pitches over the years. but there's none, n-u-n nun, better than this.
