>> manafort found guilty on eight of 18 counts. some of it involving his work for ukraine. prosecutors may re-file the other ten counts. pierre thomas in northern virginia. >> reporter: president trump's former campaign chairman, paul manafort, is a convicted felon who could spend the rest of his life behind bars. after four days of deliberations, the jury rendering its verdict. guilty on five counts of tax evasion. one count of failing to report a foreign bank account and two counts of bank fraud. they were unable to reach a verdict on ten other counts. the judge declared a mistrial on those ten counts. manafort sat stonefaced, winking at his wife kathleen as he was led out of the courtroom. his attorney later addressing reporters, saying manafort got a fair trial. >> mr. manafort is disappointed of not getting acquittals all the way through or a complete hung jury on all counts. he is evaluating all of his options at this point.

>> reporter: prosecutors accuse manafort of masterminding two schemes, one to hide millions of dollars from the irs, the other to defraud banks into lending him millions more. they say he stashed $60 million in 31 offshore bank accounts, telling the jury, use your common sense, does it make sense that he forgot that he had to report them? they argued he used the money to bankroll a lavish lifestyle, posh homes, fancy suits. the trial, the first big test for special counsel mueller and an extraordinary fall for manafort. two years ago he was running the trump campaign, guiding the candidate through the convention. >> he's a decisive person with a human side who cares about people. >> reporter: trump seemed thrilled. >> paul manafort has done an amazing job. he's here somewhere. where's paul? >> reporter: but soon manafort was pushed out amid a swirl of stories about his work for ukrainian officials with ties to moscow.

corporate contribution and the second one for personally making an excessive personal contribution, both for the purpose of influencing the 2016 election. >> reporter: just 11 days before the election, cohen paid off porn star stormy daniels who claimed she had a one-night affair with donald trump. >> mr. cohen sought reimbursement for that money by submitting invoices to the candidate's company, which were untrue and false. it was simply a means to obtain reimbursement for the unlawful contribution. >> reporter: cohen also involved in the payoff to karen mcdougal, a former playboy playmate who claims she had a one-year-long affair with trump before the election and she sold her story to the national enquirer. they bought it and buried it. a practice known as "catch and kill." the president denied knowing about that payment as well. but cohen recording a secret

turning to the other major concern for the white house. former campaign chairman paul manafort was convicted of eight of 18 financial charges. >> they include not reporting income from ukraine and lying to obtain millions in loans. >> peter thomas reports from the courthouse in northern virginia. >> reporter: paul manafort received a hung jury on ten of the 18 counts. he nonetheless faces significant prison time. of those eight counts he was convicted of, he faces a maximum of 80 years in prison. the judge most likely won't give him all that time, but he's facing years if not a decade in prison. he faces another trial in september in washington, d.c. he's in jail right now on allegations of witness tampering in connection with the upcoming

trial. suffice it to say, he's facing tremendous pressure. i'm pierre thomas, abc news, alexandria, virginia. talking to reporters in west virginia, president trump expressed sadness for manafort but said the case had nothing to do with him. >> he also said it has nothing to do with collusion between his campaign and russia. and he says he's not a loser. terry moran says there was a winner, the american system. >> reporter: the real victors are the jury. this jury was not sequestered. they walked out looking at the press every day. they could see us covering this trial in a highly politicized moment with the president of the united states himself coming out from time to time and commenting on this case. they put all that aside in this looney political moment and did what juries do. they worked methodically through the evidence for three and a half days. they agreed on what they could agree on and punted on what they disagreed on.

attorney michael cohen were found guilty of frauds, involving millions of dollars. >> president trump called manafort's conviction a disgrace but didn't comment on cohen. we begin with emily rau. >> reporter: president trump's long-time fixer walked out of court in new york after pleading guilty to a total of eight felony charges, two campaign finance counts, one for giving a false statement to a bank and five counts of tax evasion. 11 days before the election he paid off stormy daniels who claims she had a one-night affair with president trump in 2006. the president initially said he didn't know about that payment. but later, the white house saying he did know. >> mr. cohen sought reimbursement for that money by submitting invoices to the candidate's company, which were untrue and false.

>> reporter: cohen was also involved in the payoff of former playboy playmate karen mcdougal, cohen telling judges he was working in coordination and at the direction of a candidate for federal office. and in virginia, a jury found president trump's former campaign chairman, paul manafort, guilty on five counts of tax evasion, one count of failing to report a foreign bank account and two counts of bank fraud. they were unable to reach a verdict on ten other counts and the judge declared a mistrial on those ten counts. manafort showed no emotion as the verdict was read. president trump reacting to the verdict tuesday night. >> it doesn't involve me. but it's a very sad thing that happened. it has nothing to do with russian collusion. >> reporter: cohen is now out on bond. paul manafort has another trial starting next month. emily rau, abc news, washington.

president trump seems more upset by manafort's conviction, but the cohen plea bargain may be more of a problem for the president. >> maryalice parks says this is more likely to have far-reaching political repercussions. >> you know it was an absolutely head-spinning day, when the president's former campaign chairman is convicted of crimes, and yet that feels like the second-biggest headline. instead, the biggest news, the accusations from michael cohen. cohen pointed his finger at the president and said the president instructed him to commit a crime. a crime during the 2016 election. and it was that part that was really the zinger here. because cohen said that the crime he committed, those campaign finance violations, the paying off of women who were accusing the president of affairs, that all of that was designed to help the president

politically, to help his campaign and not just to help his marriage. so what happens next? for cohen, likely jail time, considering the seriousness of the crimes that he pled to. for the president, consequences are really unknown territory. many legal experts say the president of the united states probably cannot be indicted. probably cannot have charges brought against him. instead, law enforcement could make recommendations to congress based on cohen's accusations. but either way, for the president, it's really a political question. more testimonies or hearings regarding the president explicitly, those are all likely questions for members of congress. so suddenly the midterm elections that are two and a half months away look even more significant. and whereas michael cohen only pled guilty yesterday, former campaign chairman paul manafort was found guilty by a jury. none of those charges had
