take a bullet for the president cut a deal.clearly looking to court documents showing donald j. trump was the candidate cohen was helping when he was committing those crimes. >> janai norman, thanks so much. a "new york times" reporter who covers the president and has for years tweeted this analysis after cohen's guilty plea. maggie haberman saying trump folks are worried about impeachment more than before. the thinking goes like this, this is something tangible, not a theoretical, and it didn't come from mueller. it does not mean it will happen but this has moved to a different stage in their minds. well, now to president trump's former campaign chairman, paul manafort, who could face the rest of his life behind bars. the jury in his tax fraud trial has found him guilty on eight counts. it's the first prosecution by special counsel robert mueller's team. >> mrs. manafort, any response? >> reporter: the verdict for paul manafort came after four y on eight counts including tax evasion, bank fraud and failing to report

his work for ukrainian officials with ties to russia. manafort's trial marks the first court test for the special counsel, robert mueller, who was appointed to investigate interference in the 2016 election. an investigation president trump continuously slams as a witch-hunt. before his rally in west virginia last night, the president reacting to the verdict. >> i still feel, you know, it's a very sad thing that happened. this has nothing to do with russian collusion. this started as russian collusion. this has absolutely nothing to do. this is a witch-hunt and it's a disgrace. >> manafort faces a maximum sentence of 80 years but the total will likely be much less. he faces another trial next month on money laundering and witness tampering charges in d.c. one of the first congressmen to support president trump's campaign has now been indicted for alleged corruption. duncan hunter and his wife are accused of misusing more than $250,000 in campaign funds to pay for a lavish vacation and other expenses.

the congressman's local newspaper, "the san diego union-tribune" now calling for him to resign but so far hunter is still running for re-election. a powerful earthquake has shaken venezuela. the 7.3 magnitude quake is the strongest to jolt that country in more than a century and sent people running into the streets. but it struck deep off the northeast coast and, therefore, caused only some limited damage. it comes as venezuela struggles with an economic crisis and a new currency. a hurricane warning has been issued this morning for the big island of hawaii as hurricane lane approaches. it is now a category 5 storm packing winds of up to 160 miles an hour. let's get a check now on your wednesday weather forecast. hurricane lane, you see there, expected to approach hawaii's big island by tomorrow afternoon. it should weaken to category 3 as it moves northwest. the path there. hawaii's governor says all

feet from their boat. they say they were surrounded by bait fish at the time and the whale couldn't resist a quick lunch. president trump's nominee for the supreme court brett kavanaugh believes roe vs. wade is settled law. that's according to republican senator susan collins who met with kavanaugh tuesday. collins has said she would oppose any nominee who's hostile to the landmark decision. the senate's top democrat, chuck schumer, isn't buying kavanaugh's statement, though. schumer says kavanaugh refused to answer when he asked if roe v. wade was correctly decided. his confirmation hearing begins september 4th. a disturbing new allegation against a catholic priest in pennsylvania. 30-year-old reverend kevin lonergan now faces criminal charges of indecent assault against a 17-year-old girl. he's accused of sending her nude photos and groping her. the charges are separate from the report released by the pennsylvania grand jury just last week accusing more than 300

in the days since that report, hundreds of people have called a clergy abuse hotline. actress asia argento, one of the leaders of the me too movement is denying accusations that she gave alcohol to a 17-year-old and sexually assaulted him. she says she never had a sexual relationship with actor jimmy bennett even though she reportedly paid him a $380,000 settlement. argento has revealed that her boyfriend, the late anthony bourdain, provided the money and says the two of them felt sorry bennett was having money problems and wanted to avoid negative publicity. facebook says it has shut down more than 650 bogus pages linked to russia and iran. they were aimed at spreading political disinformation. the company says the sites had more than 1 million combined followers. facebook says it's working with u.s. authorities on the investigation. the animals adorning your animal crackers box are now uncaged.

the identity has not been confirmed, however, we believe it to be the body of mollie tibbetts. >> reporter: authorities also announcing in addition to finding the body, a suspect is now under arrest. cristhian rivera, a 24-year-old man who police say was in the u.s. illegally and living in the same county where mollie tibbetts disappeared. rivera now in jail charged with first degree murder. officials revealing that surveillance video provided detectives with images of a suspicious vehicle. >> we identified that vehicle belonging to mr. rivera and then we located him, interviewed him and subsequently he led us to her location. >> reporter: the 20-year-old university of iowa student disappeared on july 18th. last seen going for a run in brooklyn, iowa. when she did not show up for work the next day, her co-workers got worried and her family reported her missing. according to police, rivera was brought in for questioning on monday. >> he tells us he ran alongside her or behind her and then at

one point he tells us that mollie grabbed ahold of her phone and said you need to leave me alone. i'm going to call the police. and then she took off running. he in turn chased her down and then he tells us that at some point in time he blacks out. >> reporter: the suspect worked at a local farm for four years. yarrabee farms has now released a statement saying rivera was vetted through the e-verify system and was an employee in good standing. the farm says it keep records on all employees and has shared them with authorities. authorities are not yet commenting on the motive for mollie's murder. prosecutors in colorado are deciding whether to seek the death penalty against a father charged with killing his pregnant wife and their two young daughters. chris watts did not enter a plea during his court appearance, only answering yes, sir, when he was asked whether he understood the charges. in the meantime, his wife's father, you see him there, broke down in court. watts was allegedly having an

affair with his co-worker and claimed that he killed his wife only after she strangled their daughters. he's due back in court in november. two chicago police officers caught sleeping on the job will now face disciplinary action. the pair were seen napping in a police vehicle saturday. the department is denying claims they were exhausted due to mandatory overtime. the city is pushing police to work longer hours in the wake of increased gun violence. nearly 60 people were shot in chicago over the weekend. six people died. the queen of soul aretha franklin apparently did not have a will, and that could raise questions about what happens now to her estimated $80 million fortune. her four sons have reportedly filed a document listing themselves as interested parties in her estate. franklin's niece has asked to be a personal representative of the estate. meantime, look what happened and what appeared as fans remembered franklin at last night's detroit tigers game in downtown, a rainbow suddenly formed during the moment of silence.

reporting live in oakland, amy holyfield. it is now 4:30. let's talk more about that track of the hurricane. mike is standing by. you've been looking at this all week. what does it look like now? >> looks impressive, doesn't it? very donut shape, very tight. wind gradient. that's why it increased in strength up to a major category 5. we're starting to see weakening. you notice the red starting to shrink a little bit. that is going to be the case. it is supposed to weaken as it heads up towards the big island. should be there, passing right by at 11:00 tomorrow evening with at least 110 miles per hour winds. it will skirt maui and just barely miss kauai at least the eye. your in that northern quadrant which is where the fastest winds will be and the heaviest rain.
