on. hi, everybody. the marine layer spent more of the energy pushing inland than producing drizzle this morning. you can see the gray overtaking our enableds and even into the central valley. you have a drier commute this morning. it's a little warmer out there. we're in the mid 50s to near 60 degrees. we'll see the sunshine quicker, even by noon in most neighborhoods. except around the bay, a little stuffy. there by 4:00, mostly sunny away from the coast with temperatures in the 70s. the coast is in the 60s. that's your 12 hour planner. how about the commute? >> yeah. we're doing okay so far today, mike. here's a live look at the south bay 101 and 880, no significant delays. we're system looking fairly light on the northbound side of 101. so we know it will be a different story in an hour or. so right now we're enjoying a light commute. the drive times are looking good too with one exception, stop and go out of the central valley. you're up to 39 minutes. no delays to mission boulevard. the green at 15. northbound 85, you're looking great at just 14 minutes.

>> thanks, alexis. happening today, the suspect charged with murdering iowa college student mollie tibbetts expected to be arraigned. tibbetts who used to live in oakland disappeared a month ago. >> look at what neighbors are doing with the signs in iowa. they're putting tape over the word missing and writing the word why. in today's first look, we're learning more about a possible motive from the suspect who is in the u.s. illegally. here is alex perez. >> reporter: in this morning's "gma first look," the tragic ending mollie tibbetts' family feared, investigators discovering a body andis man wi murder. he confessed to crime according to investigators. officials believe the 24-year-old abducted her while out for a run back on july 18ahr phd said you need to leave me alone. i'm going to call the police. and then she took off running. he in turn chased her down. >> reporter: investigators say the suspect led them to the remains found in a corn field

shortly. a man now accused of trying to pay someone to kill the children that he was charged with molesting according to the district attorney, rodney thomas jr. asked several jail inmates to kill his alleged victims after he was arrested for molestation. he's now expected to face an additional five charges of solicitation to commit murder. a south bay fire chief says verizon did not lift throttling restrictions despite officials telling the phone company that it's impacting the ability to communicate. santa claira county's fire says cell phone service was slow. a verizon spokesperson called it a customer support mistake. they tell our media partner that the data restriction should have been lifted at the fire department's request. an alert has gone out to the streleed. the victim says it was on the

campus -- the main campus late sunday or early monday morning. stanford is still on summer break. classes resume in late september and there is concern for incoming freshmen. a law professor speaking for herself and not familiar with the details of this newest case says sexual assault is an on going concern. >> students and parents should be aware of that as they come to the university this fall. 43% of our female undergraduates experience sexual violence during their time at stanford and the number is highest for freshmen. >> there were 190 reports of sexual harassment or violence at stanford in the 2016-17 school year. that's the latest year statistics are available. new details about the body found in the ver. offial identified the man as san francisco resident mubarek salasu. he was reported after friends say he didn't show up for

bay commute which is always one of our latest to fill n we're looking okay so far this morning through san rafael. traffic on the right is fairly light. most of our traffic maps are in the green today. we have one exception, of course, getting out of the central valley, westbound 205, you're down to 16 miles an hour and 15 miles an hour respectively. typical volumes. moving to san francisco with, he ha -- we have changes coming. casino buses will be allowed to use the newest red transit only lanes. the so-called red carpet lanes will be painted on gary boulevard from market street to stannon street. according to the examiner, the board of directors has approved a phase of the $35 million project. but some neighborhood groups don't like the idea. they say allowing private shuttles may slow down the service. thank you. now let's get back to abc 7 news

reporter matt keller. >> he is live in san jose telling us about this sudden and surprising closure of orchard hardware supply stores. >> yeah, good morning, reggie and jessica. the official announcement coming in. the store here in south san jose has been here for decades. they had big plans here. they have the sign out front that says now hiring happy people. a lot of the current workers are finding out their jobs are going away. lowe's bought them about five years ago. orchard supply was founded in san jose all the way back in 1931. back then it was used by farmers to buy supplies. then it turned into a modern day hardware store. several of those are here in the bay area. the earnings report called this morning, lowe's announced they'll be closing all the stores and their distribution facility about it end of the fiscal year. lowe's president and ceo said while it is a necessary business decision to exit orchard supply hardware, decision that's impact our people are never easy. we'll provide outplacement ss s

the bill to eliminate cash bail for defendants awaiting trial. it passed through state legislature yesterday meaning it's now up to the governor, grofrn jerry brown. he's indicating that he supports the bill. it would make california the first state to completely end bail for suspects waiting for their trial. instead, it would be replaced with a system to jail people based on their risk level. in the north bay, cell phone companies won't be able to build 5g towers if some residents have their way. this is led by the emf safety network. they launched a campaign to stop companies from even submitting applications to build these towers. the network which fights to reduce fields and wireless radiation claims that they cause heart problems and cancer. according to the cdc, the jury is still out on the hetalth risks. a homeless man that looked for a job landed a new position. david tweeted that he accepteded a software engineering position with white fox defense.

up overnight and became major category 5 hurricane, the most devastating one we can have. however, the track still says it is going to whacken jueaken a l. take a look at 11:00 tomorrow evening. it's going to rake mir mile-per-hour winds. and then honolulu and during the friday time frame with 80 mile-per-hour winds. then it moves out and continues to weaken. you'll be susceptible to wind damage. the lower you are, flooding and down near the coast, you're going to have a storm surge of up to three to four feet. there could be flooding there. also, there is damage from the storm unfortunately. here's a look at what is going on back at home. clouds this morning. about 56 degre about 65 degrees in san jose. grab the sunglasses. a brighter afternoon and slightly warmer inland. minor warming is coming for all of us. we have a little bit of a roller coster coming up. low to mid 60s along the coast.

south of portland. there are no reports of damage so far. so now let's go west and south from there. this morning our eyes on the eye of a monster storm headed right for the hawaiian islands. hurricane lane is a category five right now. the big island bracing for what could be a big impact. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live at oakland international airport for us. amy? >> hi, jessica. flights are still leaving oakland for hawaii and passengers are still going. take a look at the hawaiian airlines ticket counter here this morning. very busy. but we did talk to people as they're headed out of here with at least one passenger telling us she did have a sleepless night worrying about this storm. alaska airlines says on the website it will waive change fees for travelers who decide to stay home. you do have to go on the trip by next thursday. hopefully the storm will be long gone by then. some are still going today. they point out to us that even if they get a break on changing a flight, they still have other

activities they have to pay for and they're worried about losing that money. >> i already made two tours and both of them no cancellation yet. so we're supposed to go to a luai and snorkling trip. but as of last night, they said no cancellation yet. >> here's a look at the satellite image of hurricane lane. it is a category-5 hurricane. the big island is under a hurricane warning and hasn't seen a category 5 come close to that island since 1994. the center of the storm is expected to pass over or near the big island some time between tomorrow and saturday. amy hollyfield. you and i were talking early better 2018 being a very difficult year for the hawaii islands. >> yeah, specially for the big islands. they were dealing with weeks

with the lava eruptions and now this hurricane on the way. mike, i was just reading, it's been 26 years since hurricane aniki devastated hawaii. so i'm just crassing fingers this doesn't do the same. >> i'm sorry to hear that, reggie. it's the big island that is going to take the brunt of it. but other islands will be affected. but the storm is going to weaken as it does travel through the islands. let's start by showing what you happened overnight. it did strengthen. still a category 5. stilpacking center of the eye. the eye never makes it over land. notice as we go from 11:00 tomorrow evening to 11:00 friday evening as it goes from hawaii to ka wiy, it drops from a five to a two to a one. and that means the wind speeds will drop also. but let's talk about what's going to happen as far as those winds. what you're going to see is starting at 3:00 tomorrow morning, the 39 mile-per-hour winds start to hit hawaii.

now this is at the surface. winds are much faster as you head up. we know how high the islands can get in elevation. so the higher you go, the more devastation the winds are going to be. the fastest winds will pass over the big island. and they'll be up around 59. so that's where we could see more devastation from the winds at the lower elevations and here's a look at the rain. it goes off our chart. our chart stops at eight inches. this is going to put 10 to 15 inches of rain on the big island and maui. that's where the greatest chance of flooding. then we see less of a chance around oahu and kauai. there is still going to be a lot of runoff and minor flooding there too. so from today all the way through saturday evening you need to keep an eye on the hawaiian islands and be careful. >> all right. good morning, mike. we did have a traffic alert. i just got good news in. so not one but two crashes for the bay bridge drive. we're looking at the incline right now. folks heading into the island
