bay commute which is always one of our latest to fill n we're looking okay so far this morning through san rafael. traffic on the right is fairly light. most of our traffic maps are in the green today. we have one exception, of course, getting out of the central valley, westbound 205, you're down to 16 miles an hour and 15 miles an hour respectively. typical volumes. moving to san francisco with, he ha -- we have changes coming. casino buses will be allowed to use the newest red transit only lanes. the so-called red carpet lanes will be painted on gary boulevard from market street to stannon street. according to the examiner, the board of directors has approved a phase of the $35 million project. but some neighborhood groups don't like the idea. they say allowing private shuttles may slow down the service. thank you. now let's get back to abc 7 news

reporter matt keller. >> he is live in san jose telling us about this sudden and surprising closure of orchard hardware supply stores. >> yeah, good morning, reggie and jessica. the official announcement coming in. the store here in south san jose has been here for decades. they had big plans here. they have the sign out front that says now hiring happy people. a lot of the current workers are finding out their jobs are going away. lowe's bought them about five years ago. orchard supply was founded in san jose all the way back in 1931. back then it was used by farmers to buy supplies. then it turned into a modern day hardware store. several of those are here in the bay area. the earnings report called this morning, lowe's announced they'll be closing all the stores and their distribution facility about it end of the fiscal year. lowe's president and ceo said while it is a necessary business decision to exit orchard supply hardware, decision that's impact our people are never easy. we'll provide outplacement ss s

the bill to eliminate cash bail for defendants awaiting trial. it passed through state legislature yesterday meaning it's now up to the governor, grofrn jerry brown. he's indicating that he supports the bill. it would make california the first state to completely end bail for suspects waiting for their trial. instead, it would be replaced with a system to jail people based on their risk level. in the north bay, cell phone companies won't be able to build 5g towers if some residents have their way. this is led by the emf safety network. they launched a campaign to stop companies from even submitting applications to build these towers. the network which fights to reduce fields and wireless radiation claims that they cause heart problems and cancer. according to the cdc, the jury is still out on the hetalth risks. a homeless man that looked for a job landed a new position. david tweeted that he accepteded a software engineering position with white fox defense.

activities they have to pay for and they're worried about losing that money. >> i already made two tours and both of them no cancellation yet. so we're supposed to go to a luai and snorkling trip. but as of last night, they said no cancellation yet. >> here's a look at the satellite image of hurricane lane. it is a category-5 hurricane. the big island is under a hurricane warning and hasn't seen a category 5 come close to that island since 1994. the center of the storm is expected to pass over or near the big island some time between tomorrow and saturday. amy hollyfield. you and i were talking early better 2018 being a very difficult year for the hawaii islands. >> yeah, specially for the big islands. they were dealing with weeks

with the lava eruptions and now this hurricane on the way. mike, i was just reading, it's been 26 years since hurricane aniki devastated hawaii. so i'm just crassing fingers this doesn't do the same. >> i'm sorry to hear that, reggie. it's the big island that is going to take the brunt of it. but other islands will be affected. but the storm is going to weaken as it does travel through the islands. let's start by showing what you happened overnight. it did strengthen. still a category 5. stilpacking center of the eye. the eye never makes it over land. notice as we go from 11:00 tomorrow evening to 11:00 friday evening as it goes from hawaii to ka wiy, it drops from a five to a two to a one. and that means the wind speeds will drop also. but let's talk about what's going to happen as far as those winds. what you're going to see is starting at 3:00 tomorrow morning, the 39 mile-per-hour winds start to hit hawaii.

now this is at the surface. winds are much faster as you head up. we know how high the islands can get in elevation. so the higher you go, the more devastation the winds are going to be. the fastest winds will pass over the big island. and they'll be up around 59. so that's where we could see more devastation from the winds at the lower elevations and here's a look at the rain. it goes off our chart. our chart stops at eight inches. this is going to put 10 to 15 inches of rain on the big island and maui. that's where the greatest chance of flooding. then we see less of a chance around oahu and kauai. there is still going to be a lot of runoff and minor flooding there too. so from today all the way through saturday evening you need to keep an eye on the hawaiian islands and be careful. >> all right. good morning, mike. we did have a traffic alert. i just got good news in. so not one but two crashes for the bay bridge drive. we're looking at the incline right now. folks heading into the island
