down connections for firefighters in the north bay. it could have impacted their effort to contain the fire. and the local church group accused of vandalizing a publicly accessible peak in the south bay. plus, caught on camera. what caused this police helicopter to suddenly crash? good morning on this august 22 nnd. it is 6:00 a.m. >> here's our meteorologist with the forecast. >> look at all the grayness. good morning to you. i overlaid the clouds on live doppler 7. it's a lot drier this morning. good news for the commute there and for the frizz factor. check out the 12 hour planner. temperatures mild they are morning. a lot of upper 50s to even a few mid 60s out. there we hit the low 60s at the coast with faster sunshine around our bay and inland neighborhoods. we're around 66 to 71 at noon. because of the faster sunshine, you notice a little bit warmer inland today. by 7:00, most of us back in the

60s with the clouds coming back. let's find out if the traffic is out there waiting for you. >> good morning, mike. we definitely have some heavy traffic at the bay bridge toll plaza. started off with a sig alert due to a crash on the bridge around treasure island. that is gone. the backup is not. this is probably going to be here for the rest of the morning. you're stacked up into the maze. this is a look at the toll plaza. once you make it past the metering lights, things have improved. so i'll prove that here with drive times. westbound 80 and highway 4 to the maze. at our worst point, we were at 40 minutes across the bay bridge down to 13 now. that is not terrible. san francisco to sfo, still looking great in the green at nine minutes. next traffic update coming up around 6:10. >> new details on the announcement that orchard supply hardware is shutting down. >> the parent company releasing the earnings report overnight. confirming all 99 stores will close in california, oregon and hawaii by the end of the fiscal year. i believe it's florida,

actually. that is february 1st. now the chain started in san jose 87 years ago. our abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live at one of the south bay stores with a little more information. hi, matt. >> hi. good morning, jessica and reggie. orchard supply started in san jose back in 1931. and this morning the official announcement the stores will be closing and the workers are looking for new jobs. now lowe's bought orchard supply about five years ago. it was started decades ago when this area was filled with farms and orchards. they used orchard supply to buy supplies. eventually it turned into a modern hardware store with 99 stores in california, oregon, and florida. several of those are in the bay area. it's earnings report called this morning lowe's announced they will be closing all the stores and the distribution facilit fi. lowe's president and ceo marvin ellis son said while it whats a necessary business decision to exit orchard supply hardware, decisions that impact our people are never easy.

we will be providing outplacement services for impacted associations and they will be given priority status if they choose to apply for other lowe's positions. lowe's says they will start conducting store closing sales soon. reporting live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> matt, thank you. happening today, an autopsy is planned in iowa to learn when and how bay area tibbetts died. >> he got out and ran beside her. she said she would call police and he panicked, got angry and then blacked out. he claims the next thing he knows he realized that mollie tibbetts was in the trunk. rivera also remembered leaving her in a corn field. using home surveillance video, that showed a car following a woman running, investigators found clues that led them to riff air yachlt. >> we identified that vehicle belonging to mr. rivera and wloekted him and interviewed him

and then he led us to her location. >> the 20-year-old was missing since mid july was found buried under corn stalks. rivera who is an undocumented immigrant is expected to make th today. a man is charged with molesting. according to the district attorney, rodney thomas jr. asked several jail inmates to kill his alleged victims after arrested for molestation. he is expected to face an additional five charges of solicitation to commit murder. verizon did not lift throttling restrictions despite officials telling them it was impacting the ability to communicate. the santa clara fire chief says cell phone data was slowed while batting the complex fires. verizon spokesperson called it a customer support mistake. and they tell our media partner the mercury news that the data restrictions should have been lifted at the fire department's request. an alert has gone out to the

stanford community after a woman said she was raped on campus. the exact location of the assault has not been released. but the victim says it was on the main campus late sunday or early monday morning. stanford is still on summer break. classes resume in late september and there is now concern for incoming freshmen. a law professor speaking for herself and not familiar with details of the newest case says sexual assault is an an going concern. >> students and parents should be aware of that as they come to the university this fall. 43% of our female undergraduate students experience sexual violence during their time at stanford and then the number is highest for freshmen. there were 190 reports of sexual harassment or violence at stanford in the 2016-2017 school year. that is the latest year statistics are available. >> new details about the body found in the russian river. oefd identified the man as a san francisco resident. he was reported missing sunday

night after friends say he did not show up for dinner while vacationing at rental home in againville. the friends found the sandal as and t-shirt on the dock. a search and rescue team found his body monday. the cause of that death has not been released. >> in the east bay, a high speed chase ended in a crash on interstate 80 during the evening commute. abc 7 news was in berkeley near the scene of i-80 and gillman street. all but one westbound lane of the freeway was shut down just after 6:00 last night. the pursuit involved the county sheriff's deputies. they have not yet released any details but they say no one was seriously hurt in this crash. five g cell phone service is coming to the bay area. one community wants to turn it off before it even starts. >> i think he said okay now you're going to tell me the real story or we're all going to die. >> three women described how they survived this incident. >> you are never more than 7 minutes away from the forecast.

welcome back to our breaking news from our live desk. live pictures right now from los angeles. firefighters still at the scene of that raging inferno. it erupted throughout the roof

of a commercial building within just the last hour or so. it's happening in downtown los angeles. it started about 5:00 this morning. firefighters were on the roof trying to stop this fire. then about 5:30 firefighters went into defensive mode. they got off the roof. you can see them there dousing the flames with ladder trucks. you can still see some flames, the orange glow coming from that building right now. there are no immediate reports of any injuries. we're going to keep tracking this for you and have updates as we get them. >> caught on cam rashgs a pilot seriously hurt after a police helicopter crashed during takeoff. this happened in little rock, arkansas. police say they were testing new equipment in a helicopter when wind knocked it off the platform. the pilot has a severe head injury. an uber driver accused of kidnapping three women in sacramento county and this morning we're hearing from one of the victims. >> she says they are on they are way home from a book club when things got uncomfortable and then scary.

>> he said okay, now you're going to tell me the real story other we're all going to die. and none of us knew what he was talking about, obviously. >> so what are you supposed to do? he says the driver was passing exit after exit. she was fearing the worst so she called 911 and then she jumped ot of the car once the driver slowed down. sacramento county deputies say the driver is facing kidnapping charges. uber released a statement saying the disturbing behavior the riders reported will not be tolerated. uber says the driver's access to the app has been removed and uber will now help authorities with the investigation. south bay neighbors are accusing of a church group of va vandalizing a mountain. angry visitors took notice and tracked down those responsible. on the bridge's public facebook page, a handful of users criticized the church's actions. page administrators and church pastors acknowledge the o morgan

forecast. here is more news. the oakland police department is making big progress on reducing gun v violence in the city. we were at oak planned police headquarters where police announced the result of a seven year cease-fire program. the city says it's been able to reduce shootings and murders by 52% since 2011. cease-fire is a data driven strategy with three goals reducing shootings and murders, decreasing incarceration rates and strengthening police and community relations. and speaking of police and jails and that sort of thing. there is something coming for raiders fans and we're not making any comment on it. we're just reporting it. >> the team planning to have a courtroom in their new stadium. that's not all. a travel and events website reports that in addition to nine clubs and countless other luxury amenities, the raiders new stadium will include that courtroom and also a jail. the stadium is expected to open in time for the 2020 season and we should note there is a jail

look at the winds. 10 miles per hour or less. and that bodes well for more sunshine and a slight warming trend inland today. we're starting off a little warmer this morning with upper 50s to even a few mid 60s out there under the gray sky. we'll need the sunglasses faster by noon today. and it will be brighter but still cooler than average this afternoon. 60s at the coast. low to upper 70s elsewhere. back into the 60s for us by 7:00. let's see how the commute is. >> good morning, mike. we have that sig alert still in effect in the north bay. taking you to napa, a little bit of good news in the last few minutes. we have a crash that was blocking northbound lanes at 221 right at kaiser road. one lane reopened. the other lanes still blocked because they're waiting for a street sweeper. we had a fuel spill involved if 12 to state route 121 to get into the downtown napa area, that's going to save you quite a bit of time. that. instead, in the meantime, a in you crash in for northbound 85 before saratoga avenue.

we have reports of a two car crash in the two middle lanes. working on more information on that one too. >> thank you. happening today, an autopsy is planned in iowa to learn when and how bay area native mollie tibbetts died. 24-year-old christhian rivera confessed to her murder. >> he said he followed her in his car while she was jogging. he got out and ran beside her and then she said she was going to call police. that's when rivera claims he panicked, got mad, and then he says blacked out. he claims the next thing he recalls is finding an earpiece from head phones in his lap and realizing that mollie tibbetts was in his trunk. he also remembered leaving her in an field. rivera is an undocumented immigrant and something that president trump touched on during a rally in west virginia. >> you heard about today with the illegal alien com sadly from mexico. and you saw what happened to

today. he is accused of stabbing wilson and her sister at the mcarthur bart station last month. wilson died. hadder sister survived. the family filed a lawsuit against bart claiming the trans it system should have barred him. michael cohen is facing prison time this morning. >> he pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations. he now admits he illegally paid hush money to silence two women who claimed to have had sex with the president. he told the judge he was working "in coordination and at the direction of a candidate for federal office." cohen's lawyer appeared on "good morning america" this morning. >> is michael cohen prepared to tell everything he knows about president trump to special counsel robert mueller and other prosecutors? >> yes, 100%, that's the decision he made. and that led to what happened yesterday and that's why his feelings right now are mixture of the pain he went through for his family but relief and

liberation that he can now speak completely the truth without the shadow of the potential prosecution hanging over him. >> meanwhile, the president has denied knowing about a $130,000 payment made to stormy daniels 11 days before the election. but prosecutors say cohen was reimbursed by the trump organization. and president trump tweeted a sharp dig at cohen this morning and here's the tweet. it says, if anyone is looking for a good lawyer, i would strongly suggest that you don't retain the services of michael cohen. president trump's former campaign chair paul manafort has been found guilty on eight counts in his financial fraud case. the jury deliberated for four days before reaching their verdict. the judge declared a mistrial on ten other counts that jurors could not agree on setting up the possibility of a retrial. manafort's defense attorney says he is evaluating his options. and president trump, as you might expect, also tweeted about manafort this morning.

he was kinder. i feel very badly for paul manafort and his wonderful family. justice took a 12-year-old tax case, among other things, applied tremendous pressure on him and unlike michael cohen, he refused to break, makeup stories in order to get a deal. such respect for a brave man. from the south bay this morning, regional medical center of san jose is investigating a racially charged social media post that appears to have come from an employee. according to our partners at the bay area news group, the author is identified as beth lorine, an emergency department manager. in the post, she expressed disgust and immigrants who she claims kneel at the playing of the star spangled banner. the second part of the post reads "i am sure the u.s. is giving you housing, food stamps, free health care and education for your children and this is how you feel. go back to your nasty country! dirty illegals!

now the hospital said it is handling the matter internally and would not confirm if she works there. bart commuters may have noticed the new monitors outside of the fare gates in san francisco. bart tweeted the photos of the screens. it shows ride wherz trains are going to arrive. and then on the right you see a live surveillance feed of the platform. bart says the monitors serve as a reminder that they have working cameras that are being monitored. earlier this month, bart announced a $28 million plan to increase security throughout the system. at the live desk, a mall any tud 6.2 earthquake has struck off the oregon coast. the usgs says it happened 1:30 this morning south of coos bay, located about 200 miles south of port land. there are no reports of damage so far. this morning our eyes on the eye of a monster storm headed right for the hawaiian islands.

>> hurricane lane is a category 5 and right now the big island is bracing for what could be a big impact. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live in oakland international airport with the latest and how it's affecting travelers. hi, amy. >> hi. people are still going to hawaii. check out the hawaiian airlines counter here at oakland international airport. they're getting ready to send a flight out at 8:00 this morning. people are still going. but some are nervous. and alaska airlines recognizes that. the website says it will waive change fees this week so people can avoid the storm. but they have to go on the trip by next thursday. the storm should be long gone by then. but many are going today. some have trips planned and snorkle trips, they already booked and paid for. they say they can't get a refund. another couple we talked to, they're heading over to meet up with relatives who are already vacationing there. that doesn't mean though that they aren't worried. >> most definitely second

mile-per-hour winds. it is still slated, forecasted to weaken. but it's going to hit the big island possibly 110 mile-per-hour winds. just to the south of that. as we head towards tomorrow evening, 11:00, then maui and oahu are next. friday overnight, it's going to get close to kauai. now here's the projection for where the fastest winds are going to be in comparison to where the islands are. this is at the surface. as you go up in elevation, there is less friction in the atmosphere. you can see the wind will be increasing all day thursday across the big island. and then maui and oahu as we head towards the overnight hours into friday. the greatest amount of damage could happen during the overnight hours and then into saturday. now we're going to wd damage. flooding. 10 to5 inches of rainespecially where we could get up to 20 inches of rain. there is going to be flooding

here along the islands to a lesser extent as you get to kauai and we'll have damaging surf on every beach except for the north facing beaches. so it's not going to leave much untouched as it rolls through there with potential damage starting tomorrow all the way through saturday. all right. we'll take a look at our forecast coming up. quieter than that. how about traffic this morning? >> yeah. good morning. we do have several issues there this morning as well. so taking you up to the north bay, one lane is back open for sig alert. a crash with injuries northbound 221 at kaiser road. you are able to take kaiser or some surface streets or just stick to state route 12 to state route 29 for an alternate. we also are hearing an updated location for this crash in the south bay, northbound 85 near winchester boulevard. initially reported a little further north of there. but with he have at least one lane blocked. you definitely are stacked up for a few miles. next traffic update at 6:50. >> a live look at the big board at the new york stock exchange. up slightly this morning.
