live where you live, this is "abc7 news." this morning, a community asks why, as the man accused of killing mollie tibbetts makes his first court appearance in iowa. hello there. the man police say followed and murdered the 20-year-old college student should be appearing before a judge any minute now. in fact, here's a live look from iowa. an autopsy is scheduled for mollie tibbetts. they'll try to determine how she died.

>> rep news llie tibbetts' family feared the most. tuesday, investigators recovered her body not far from where she was last seen in brooklyn, iowa. >> in one aspect, it's been able to be resolved. but, again, not the outcome at all that any of us wanted. >> reporter: this man, 24-year-old christian rivera, has been charged with first degree murder. investigators say rivera, an undocumented immigrant, confessed to the crime and led them to her body. officials believe he abducted her on july 18th while she was out for a run. >> he ran alongside of her or behind her. then she took off running. he chased her boun. >> reporter: her body was found in a cornfield. rivera spent the last several years working in iowa, his employers saying he worked at a farm for four years and was vetted through government's e-verify system. the president didn't waste any

time politicizing the arrest at a rally. last night in west virginia. >> should have never happened. illegally in our country. >> reporter: this morning, officials at the university of iowa where she attended say they're deeply saddened by the news and offering support to students who need it. zachary quiche, abc news, new york. >> i want to share with you what we received in the last ten minutes, a statement from the family saying -- >> we know that many of you will join us as we continue to carry her in our hearts forever. the bail is set at $1 million. if convicted, he could face life in prison without parole. and we are learning more about him. he worked at a dairy farm owned by the family of a republican leader. the farms said that rivera worked on the farms for the last

and matt keller is live at one of those stores. matt? >> reporter: a lot of people getting sentimental about this announcement, saying this is where they went with their parents growing up in the bay area. and now those workers and customers, taken by surprise by this announcement. samuel is moving from san jose after 23 years. this morning, he found out he's not the only one leaving. all these stores will be closing for good. >>'s sad. i feel sad for the economy, for the employees, for people. >> reporter: orchard supply was founded in san jose in 1931. back then it was used by farmers to buy su police. eventually it turned into a hardware store. lowe's purchased orchard supply in 2013. this morning, lowe's made it official, all 99 orchard supply stores located in california, oregon, and florida are expected to close by the end of the year. people we spoke with say they're

oakland b.a.r.t. station made a brief court appearance. he's charged with the murder of mia wilson and the attempted murder of 4her sister last mont. prosecutors today added a charge of lying in wait. he's due back in court september 14th. wilson's family issued a lawsuit against b.a.r.t., claiming the transit system should have banned him for previous threats and fare evasion. another big story this morning right here. this hurricane barreling toward the hawaiian islands. it's just been downgraded. mike, we have expected that it will be downgraded, but this is still a monster storm. >> absolutely. i want to show you looking for about five minutes ago, you can see the first signs of the hurricane coming in from the thunderstorms around the center itself. we've got hurricane warnings out, and since we last talked,

they've been extended to maui and some of the smaller islands around it. a warning means it's expected. at least 39-mile-per-hour winds in the next 36 hours. the rest of the island under a watch, which means it's going to beossible within the next 48 hours. so you can see it churning, spinning, the red hanging around the eye, keeping those winds at 155 miles per hour. as we look at the track, you can see by tomorrow morning, it's down to 1:30. as it passes the big island and heads to maui, down to 100 miles per hour. and it keeps weakening as it heads towards kawaii. reggie? >> mike, more on that now, hurricane lane is making for a pretty stressful dilemma for people traveling to hawaii from the bay area. do you go any way? do you take up the offer to reschedule? amy hollyfield is live and has been talking to passengers about

that decision. hi, amy. >> reporter: we keep hearing the word "hope." we hope it will be okay. we hope it will change course. and then they head off to the gate. some airlines we are hearing are offering to waive the change fee. but that is -- there's a catch. so that's making a decision even tougher. cole knew when he heard the words "category 5 hurricane" he was not going to hawaii today. but making that decision was up easier than rescheduling the flight. >> we're on the phone with customer service for about an hour now, trying to change our tickets. i don't know what they're going to do with us or not. they're not letting us cancel the tickets. >> reporter: he said hawaiian airlines offered to waive the change free but he would have to take the trip by september 9th. he said he does not want to go see a possibly flooded, damaged hawaii. >> we want to move our dates to springtime. and they said you have to take it up with consumer affairs,

which is a fax number. >> reporter: and it's not just flights tourists are worried about. some have prepaid activities planned and don't want to lose the money. >> we're supposed go to a snorkeling trip, but they said no cancellation yet. so we'll see. >> reporter: it's not just vacations at stake. >> i ran a spartan race, so hopefully that will happen. but yeah, i want to do it. so we're going to go. >> reporter: hurricane lane looks massive from space. the islands could get more than 20 inches of rain from this storm. but travelers like tina campbell, mother-in-law and two young sons were still boarding flights. >> we're very scared. we're just going to make the most of it. >> reporter: i reached out to hawaiian airlines about that passenger's dilemma. i haven't heard back.

as of right now, flights are still going to hawaii. we haven't seen any cancellations. >> i have hope for them. thank you, amy. now to the update we received this morning on the mendocino complex and carr fires. the ranch and river fires, which make up that complex, are 67% and 100% contained, respectively. the ranch fire has burned more than 361,000 acres. the river fire has burned nearly 49,000 acres. santa clara county's fire chief says verizon did not lift throttling restrictions while battling the fires, slowing cell phone dataered communication. they tell our media partner that the data restriction should have been lifted at the fire department's request. the carr fire burning in shasta and trinity counties has

payments with two women with whom he had affairs. now the president is firing back. >> reporter: president trump breaking his silence over the betrayal of michael cohen, mocking him, saying the two counts of campaign violations are not a crime. tweeting -- this from the man who worked with him for of a decade. cohen pled guilty to eight counts, including making illegal campaign contributions. cohen, while not naming the president, referred to payments made weeks before the election to stormy daniels and former playboy model karen mcdougal for their silence over alleged affairs with trump. >> if he's telling the truth and the reason he was directed to do that was to influence the election, that's a campaign finance violation. that's against the law. >> reporter: cohen's lawyer,

see yeah, some nasty thunderstorms heading towards the island. this is the first band of what could potentially be devastating flooding event from hurricane lane. and the eye, you can barely see it, still about 270 miles offshore. you can see how far the reach is out of this hurricane. let's take a look at what to expect. flooding likely starting today, all the way through at least saturday, at least 10 to 20 inches of rainfall on the islands. and the surf, didn't get a chance to talk about that yet. 15 to 25 feet on top of a storm surge that could get up to three to five feet. we could have dangerous rip currents, beach erosion, and low lying flooding from the surf, let alone the rain that's going to fall. so we'll keep an eye on that. fingers crossed. a lot of thoughts going out to our friends and family. back home, you can see yeah, it's starting to get sunny, a little quicker. we'll have haze out there with

upper level smoke. so we're going to be fine. minor warming trend for the weekend, and the warmth, as soon as we get it, temperatures fall back below average. we're about 4 to 9 degrees warmer than this time yesterday. right now, temperatures in the mid 60s around the bay. even a few 70s starting to show inland. this area of low pressure that is steering the winds around us and bringing them on shore, that's why we're staying cooler today. even some l to mid 80s around gilroy. santa clara, about 76. low to mid 70s this afternoon on the peninsula. near 60 along the coast. mid 60s in downtown. still going to struggle with the sunshine. mid to upper 70s in the north bay valley. ukiah, one of the warmest spots today. low to mid 70s along the east

bayshore and don't need the air conditioner inland, upper 70s. two shutouts, two wins over the last place team in your division, that's what you're supposed to do. going for the sweep today in the coliseum. 65 under sunshine. you can see the hazy sunshine already developing in walnut creek as we break down the next 12 hours. we'll get up into the 70s away from the coast. by 8:00, if you're heading out, grab a coat. 50s by midnight and a little cooler tomorrow momomomomomo slight more drizzle. so the pattern remains clocked through tomorrow. you can see the warming trend, but nothing is out of control. temperatures back to average friday, saturday, sunday. and next week, on shore flow comes back and feels like august once again. back live to iowa. this is live from the courthouse where christian rivera is making his first court appearance.
