it could pass year maui is oahu later this week as a damaging category 2 hurricane. marci gonzalez, abc news, los angeles. this is inside the eye of hurricane lane, the storm was at its pea intensity at this point. >> spencer christian is hacking hurricane lane right now. what's the latest? there's a lot of people coming back from summer vacations. >> the storm is getting much closer to the island state right now. it's a very powerful and potentially dangerous storm, a category four hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 155 miles per hour. it's expected to pass a couple hundred miles southwest of the big island tomorrow morning and then it will continue on near maui, but to the west/southwest of maui on friday morning as a category two storm and then passing just barely southwest of honolulu on saturday as a category one, it will move out and weaken moving westward.

this storm will come close enough to potentially produce a flooding rain, damaging wind, and high waves. so hurricane warnings are in effect for the big island, and most of the eastern half of the state, and hurricane watches are in effect for the western half of the state. and this color coding will show you that some locations, especially on the big island, could get 6 to 8 inches of rainfall in isolated spots. actually, isolated spots could see more than a foot and a half of rain, but generally, we're talking about six to eight, ten inches of rain in those areas, closest to the heaviest rain in the storm. we'll keep tracking and update you later in the program. >> despite the threats, a live look right frau frnow from sfo, travelers are still traveling to hawaii this afternoon. >> amy holly field as the story from oakland international where tourists were still heading out to the islands. >> carl rhinbul new he was not

to death 18-year-old nia wilson at the mcarthur bart station could face the death news ath t hearing in the case. a large number of wilson's family showed up for the proceedings. prosecutors today added a special circumstances enhancement. that means if john lee cowell is convicted, he would be eligible for the death penalty, or life in prison without parole. cowell did not enter a plea today. the man accused of killing mollie tibbetts said his client was working here legally. immigration authorities say they have no record of that. tibbetts is the iowa college student who grew up in the bay area. all this coming as rivera made his first court appearance today. mo more. >> reporter: cristhian rivera made his first court appearance in iowa, and immediately his

attorney made it political. >> the government has weighed in at the highest levels of a predisposition that this young man is guilty. >> he's accused of murdering mollie tibbetts, last seen jogging not far from her home. >> he ran alongside of her, or running. he in turn chased her down. >> rivera worked at a nearby dairy farm confessed to the crime and led them to her body. the owners of the family-run farm speaking out wednesday. >> we are small, six-generation farm. we are still shocked to learn that one of our employees was involved. >> adding, rivera was a good employee. >> he came to work every day. was on time. and got along with his co-workers. >> mollie's body was found in a corn field about ten miles outside of brooklyn, iowa where she was living. mollie's parents released a statement saying our hearts are boken, and thanked people for their thoughts and prayers.

president should be impeached, let that emerge. but for us, our responsibility is to improve the lives of american people, lower health care costs, increase their paycheck and make government work for them. >> yesterday trump's former campaign chief paul manafort was convicted of bank and tax fraud, also tuesday, trump's former personal lawyer michael cohen pleaded guilty to campaign finance-related charges. in contra costa county health officials are trying to figure out how many people have crossed paths with a person who had a contagious case of the measles. the local resident may have exposed people at two different locations, chow restaurant in lafayette and john muir hospital in walnut creek. eric thomas is live at the hospital with more. eric? >> reporter: kristen, these two exposures would have been in the bay area. there are actually more. the person stopped in sedona, arizona first week of august and in los angeles county a couple days later before coming home to

contra costa county. so the health departments in all three locations are investigatou meiod, one of the places where there was a measles exposure was here at john muir hospital. measles isn't just for kids, although babies are the most vulnerable. >> our concern, though, is anyone who's unvaccinated. that might be a baby under 1 year of age, is unvaccinated. most babies don't get vaccinated until one year of age. >> reporter: a resident with the measles visited the emergency department on august 11th from 11:00 in the morning until 2:00 in the afternoon. the same person had a meal at chow restaurant in lafayette an august 14th. >> anyone who is not vaccinated or had past disease could have been exposed. >> reporter: the county health department found and interviewed everyone who could have been exposed at the hospital, but it's difficult to track down who was in and out of the restaurant. the measles virus is transmitted

through the air and carries these symptoms. >> red eyes, fever, sore throat, rash that starts from the head and moves down the body. someone who has it could get serious complications, pneumonia, swelling of the brain, permanent disability. >> reporter: someone with the virus is contagious four days before and four days after the rash appears. folks who have been exposed won't be completely in the clear until september 5th. >> and they should check their umm immunization status or disease history and call their doctor if they feel like they're having any symptoms of measles. >> reporter: if you were born before 1957, you're considered to be safe. either you got the immunization or you had the measles. after that, well, they highly recommend getting the u immunization. if you're wondering when the last time was that contra costa faced a case, one in 2015 and another in 2014, and it was a big deal because in both cases those people were contagious

as you may have heard, orchard supply hardware stores are closing down. that chain started in san jose 87 years ago. but its parent company lowe's says it need to slim down. >> moving from san jose after 23 years. this morning, he found out he's not the only one leaving. all orchard supply hardware stores will soon be closing for good. >> it's for me sad. for the employees, for the people. >> orchard supply was founded in

live, this is abc 7 news. headlines approaching 4:30, the price of freedom went up today for the man accused of killing mollie tibbetts. the judge increased the $1 million bond to a $5 million cash bond.

prosecutors say he came to the u.s. illegally. the employers say they gave him a fake name. the body believed to be tibbetts was found yesterday. abc 7 news meteorologist drew tuma tweeted this track of hurricane lane as it heads for the hawaiian islands, the toughest item to forecast is exactly when lane will make the left-hand turn. the sooner it turns the better, but all of the islands will be impact wed a lot of rain and wind, and perhaps some significant damage. take a look at the eye of the hurricane that the national oceanianic and atmospheric administration tweeted out today, noaa says it's near peak intensity. south bay firefighters say verizon restricted their internet service while they were at the mendocino complex fires, impacting their efforts on the fire lines. vic lee joins us now. >> reporter: well, larry, this is the blistering testimony

which the chief of the santa clara county central fire department wrote in a court brief to support the county's lawsuit against the fcc, the federal communications commission. now, the county is one of many agencies and states suing the fcc to overturn the commission's repeal, the so-called net neutrality rules, this to ensure the equal treatment of internet traffic. the data throttling happened after the mendocino complex fires erupted last month. throttling, deliberately restricting data transfers. santa clara county firefighters saw internet data flow slow down dramatically. >> the speed was reduced to 1/200th of the full speed of the internet collection. >> council puts it another way. >> below dial-up, putting them back 20, 30 years in terms of

internet access really. >> reporter: while the firefighters were battling what would become the biggest wildfire in the state's history. >> they started using personal devices to overcome the issue. >> reporter: the court filing, verizon officials said its department exceeded the plan limit. the command in communications rig called functioning, in this e-mail from the fire department to verizon an i.t. officer demanded remove any data throttling on oes-5262 immediately. verizon responded by suggesting the department upgrade its plan by more than doubling its bill to $99.99 a month. >> it's just ludicrous. their answer was, you know, upgrade your plan. >> reporter: county supervisor cindy chavez. >> the idea that verizon or any other provider can opt in or opt out of helping us do what the public demands is appalling.

>> reporter: well, verizon issued a written statement which says, in part, and let me quote, we have a practice to remove data speed restrictions when contacted in emergency situations. in this situation we should have lifted the speed restriction. this was a customer support mistake. vic lee, abc 7 news. new york state investigators today subpoena michael cohen, president trump's former personal lawyer, as part of an investigation into the trump subpoena came after cohen's attorneys said their client had information that would be of interest to prosecutors. meanwhile, president trump is reacting to cohen pleading guilty to campaign finance-related crimes. abc ease tara palmeri has more on that. >> reporter: president trump implicated in campaign finance crimes of michael cohen. the president now speaking out, telling fox news the campaign finance violations, cohen pled guilty to, are not crimes. >> my first question when i

heard about it was was did they come out of the campaign? because that could be a little dicey? they didn't come out of the campaign. white house spokesperson sarah sanders saying the president did nothing wrong. >> just because michael cohen made a plea deal doesn't mean that that implicate it is president on anything? >> reporter: the president lashing out on twitter, accusing cohen of making up stories in order to strike a deal with prosecutors. even mocking the man who worked for him for over a decade, tweeting if anyone is looking for a good lawyer, i would strongly suggest that you don't retain the services of michael cohen. cohen faces jail time after pleading guilty in federal court monday to eight counts, including making illegal campaign contributions in coordination and at the direction for candidate for federal office. while not naming the president, cohen apparently referred to payments made weeks before the election to porn star stormy daniels and former playboy model karen mcdougal for their silence over the alleged affairs.

the president -- they're forced for the president? >> high crimes and misdemeanors? >> i wouldn't go that far yet. >> reporter: cohen's lawyer lanny davis rejecting the possibility of a presidential pardon. >> he will not and does not want anything from donald trump. >> reporter: former presidential candidate incurring utah senate candidate mitt romney without naming trump or cohen called their behavior dis-honorable and illegal. a san francisco firm is being credited with stopping a cyberattack of the democratic national committee. according to mobile security company lookout one of its detection systems thwarted the hack. the hacking attempt was on a voter database of tens of millions of people. authorities say no information was compromised. party officials say the culprit is not clear at this point, but in a statement the dnc's chief

security officer said the trump administration is not doing enough to protect american democracy. a man in italy is in custody after being caught on security video setting fire to a gas station. the man was seen spraying gas on the ground before lighting it up. police say he did it for revenge after a pump swallowed his cash and failed to give him gas the day before. >> that seems harsh. >> investigators tracked down the man by identifying his work uniform, criminal as well. this is scary, a police helicopter pilot in little rock, the video shows the helicopter hovering unsteadily off a takeoff platform. a man emerges, gesturing, land, land, cut the engine. look how it ends. the helicopter goes sideways, the tail snags the platform. police initially claimed the wind blew the helicopter over and that it had not left the ground but the video clearly shows otherwise. >> the pilot's going to be okay?

dave kavill told us they are hoping the fan experience inside the coliseum, the product on the field, and their commitment expressed to stay in oakland will all combine to bring even more people out to the games. in oakland, laura anthony, abc 7 news. >> laura, i can see a few of the final tail geters there behind you, they only had 13,000 fans at this game. as much as dave kavill is eternally optimistic, i talked to them last week about what they need to do, what they can do, what's realistic in bringing the fans back, it seems clear this is going to take a while. there are a lot of die hands. for myself, you know, i really had a hard time when they traded josh donaldson and a lot of other players. you're a big a's fan as well. how long do you think it will take for fans to buy back into the team, and not only the players, but what management and ownership is doing? >> reporter: well, larry, i did talk to david about that as well. and i think they see this as a

building process. i asked him, as the team was out on the field, are you guys committed to keeping these players, the chapmans, the mark hannah's, semiyen,all those guys, with the exception of khris davis, a free agent. he said, hey, we've got those guys for four or five years. barring a trade, he expects them to be here. that's one thing fans are looking for. i also think this commitment to build a stadium here in oakland for the first time we're hearing that loud and clear in the last few years, i think that commitment will go a long way toward helping them build this fan base back where it was, even four or five years ago. >> yeah, laura, they've got to sign khris davis again. you're going down the whole lineup. we may have to deputize you in the sports department, laura. >> reporter: okay, thanks. she was talking about the stadium, the a's are taking another step forward. they've hired b.i.g. to lead the

hurricane lane is bearing down on hawaii. tourists already there, or those planning to go need to get prepared. to what rights to travelers have in this tough situation? >> "7 onichael fine knee is here with some

answers. >> one day here, the other guy doesn't, it gets complex. each airline makes its own rules. things do get complicated. here's the basic rule. if the airline cancels a flight, you can get your money back, generally. if you cancel the flight, you can rebook for free. hawaiian american, united, alaska and delta, the flights must have been booked before august 21st for trips set to take place somewhere between the 21st and august 26th. it all depends on the airline. some are only giving two days, the 23rd and 24th, others up to six days. you can rebook. moat airlines also require the rebooking take place within a couple of weeks. now, hotels can be tough on this. many locations in hurricane zones have policies of state. if they're open during a storm, no refunds. check your hotel small print. excursions, attractions and local tourists tend to shut down on hurricanes, but reopening on
