>> yeah, they are. and now you see that they're in their prime a little bit later. especially our last two olympic teams, they're 17, 18, 19, even 20, 21 years old, which is, you know, a terrific thing that's happening. you know, you don't have to be a child. unfortunately you're still basically having to have a child's body. so that hasn't changed too much. but yeah, that is the thing that you -- in order to be an elite gymnast, for your viewers, we're only talking about elite gymnastics. because youth gymnastics is fabulous, wonderful sport, we love it. when you get to the elite level, all the rules change, all the expectations change, and these girls have just a window in which they can be the best in the world. so, you know, they're staving off bpuberty, they have to havea body like an adolescent boy's body and their careers are over when they turn into women. >> one of the most controversial
4:50 pm
figures in gymnastics is bella caroley, a lot of gold medal winners, so we see these girls who are stars and american heres in some cases, but there are hundreds or thousands who have been physically and mentally broken, and some for life. >> there's a payoff for all those years and years of literally suffering. in the book i call it legal child abuse. that is what it is. and these girls, there's no safety net for them. there's no government oversight because it's a sport. it's not a job. well, tell that to these girls. i mean, it is a job. >> and isolated from their parents in many cases, so 23 years later, you know, here we are. if we come back and do this interview in another 20 years, will things be better, i hope? >> they will absolutely be better. and i say this for one reason. when i was watching, as many of us did on cnn at the sentencing hearing for larry nassar in that
4:51 pm
lancing, michigan courtroom, and i saw -- i think it was originally a list of 75, 80 gymnasts and former gymnasts coming forward to testify at the sentencing. as it was on live television, other gymnasts saw it, packed their bags, and went to michigan, and at the end of the sentencing hearing there were 156 gymnasts and former gymnasts who testified. having written that book and seeing what it took for these girls to be the best in the world and be elite gymnasts, it's that tenacity, it's the hyperfocus, it's the grit that they needed to get through that. and i could almost visualize now as you said it's almost 300 of them, like their gaze turning from gymnastics onto the federation and these coaches. >> right. >> and they are the ones that give me hope. they're not going to let it go
