california. developing news from hawaii as hurricane lane gets ever closer, more than 19 inches of rain fell on parts of the big island, during a 24-hour period. hawaii's governor is urging residents to set aside two weeks worth of food and water. several flights are being cancelled. so far, more expected. abc 7 news meteorologist sandhya patel joins us now with the latest on lane. it is still a dangerous hurricane, but it has weakened to a category three. the latest from the central pacific hurricane center. our live doppler 7 is tracking the storm. big island still seeing the rain. it has been up to 19 inches, as you mentioned, this category three storm packing winds of 125 miles an hour. it's 190 miles away from kona, hawaii area. it makes a sharp westward turning weakening to a category one heading towards the weekend. with this storm, warnings and watches are up as you know, and

rainfall totals through sunday morning may be up to 30 additional inches of rain. wave heights, 10 to 25 feet, not out of the question, and offshore, over 30 foot waves are expected. so a powerful storm headed towards hawaii, but moving very slowly. kristen is this. >> sandhya, thank you. uncertainty for people who left the bay area on flights to hawaii today. the last chance to get there before the storm really arrived. abc 7 news reporter matt keller has an update from san jose international airport. >> reporter: heading home to hawaii would normally be a joyful time for cora dell rosa. but she's worried about what she'll find when she arrives. >> very scared, concerned about the storm. >> reporter: she says her kids in honolulu have let her know about the current weather conditions and officials have prepared them for what to do in case they have to evacuate. >> they know they can go to a shelter nearby. >> reporter: an airport official

state senators passed a bill today that would allow surface parking lots to be replaced with housing at a number of bart stations in san francisco and the east bay. assembly bill 2923 would give bart total zoning control over bart-owned land and essentially allow the agency to override local city and/or county zoning standards to fast track development. the proposal was called a no brainer. >> biggest challenge is to our quality of life, to our communities, to our economic health is the crisis we have around affordable homes, and traffic congestion. >> reporter: some riders have expressed concerns about parking spaces possibly being eliminated. but a last-minute change was made requiring a replacement parking policy to ensure people could still park specifically at suburban stations. however, opponents say cities and counties not bart should oversee residential development planning and approval. fremont mayor lily may believes the bill ignores the success of recent transit oriented
