now from abc 7, live breaking news. >> listen to your radio and vacate immediately. >> warnings are sounding in hawaii tonight. the next few hours will be critical as hurricane lane continues to bring high winds, flooding, and mudslides to the islands. good evening. >> lane remains a category 3 storm tonight. let's give you a live picture from the big island. it is dark there, but you can probably still tell those palm trees are blowing in the wind. a tropical storm warning is in effect and flooding is a major concern. >> the national weather service says the highest threat of rain and wind shifts to maui overnight. uber is providing free rides to and from red cross shelters.

we'll touch base with sandhya patel for the latest on this hurricane. >> yeah, this is a slow-moving soaker. hurricane lane still a category 3, packing winds of 120 miles per hour, 170 miles southwest of ki kilua. so far, up to two feet of rain has fallen on the big island. it is going to weak on the a tropical storm by sunday. now, look at live doppler 7, it is tracking some rain across the big island. they've seen flooding and they'll continue to see major problems as isolated spots could pick up 30 to 40 inches of rain. watches and warnings are up and wave heights increasing. seeing the winds gusting over 45 to 50 miles an hour. kristen? >> sandhya, thanks so much.

the storm has had a serious impact on flights in and out of the bay area. kate larson joins us live now where people have been changing travel plans in a hurry. >> reporter: that's right. many flights from sfo to the hawaiian islands have been canceled. but i'm hearing from passengers that airlines are actually adding flights to get people out of hawaii. but first, let's take a look at why so many people are worried about hurricane lane to begin with. video from the rainbow falls shows how much water hurricane lane is bringing to the island. >> lots and lots of rain. i mean, it's pumping over here. >> reporter: she says this photo shows what the area above the falls normally looks like. but once lane brought in the

rain wednesday, she took this video of the river swelling. 24 hours later and there's more water overflowing. travelers flying to and from sfo show eed an abundance of cautio. >> we welt felt like we were in danger. >> reporter: this couple lives in vermont, but decided to buy tickets away from hawaii and ended up in san francisco. >> i'm $4,000 in debt right now just to get off that island. >> reporter: others were trying to get back to hawaii. david chung works for salvation army. they changed their flights to get home to honolulu as soon as possible. >> we're here at the airport because we're trying to beat the hurricane back, which you probably won't. it won't be in full mode yet. >> reporter: so everyone we spoke to at sfo tonight who had

hawaii plane tickets was changing their itinerary because of the hurricane. if you have hawaii plans, best to check with your airlines because there are a lot of cancellations and delays. kate larson, "abc7 news." >> thank you very much. at oakland, three arrivals from hawaii came in on time tonight. in san jose, one flight from honolulu was canceled. united airlines canceled all flights two and from maui. >> if you have a trip planned to hawaii in the next few days, you can rebook for free. but the new flight usually has to be within a couple of weeks, so may or may not work for your schedule. if the airline cancels your flight, you get your money back. we have information on all the major carriers at abc7news.com. let's move on. firefighters are working into the night monitoring a fight that broke out outside the tesla family in fremont.

the flames billowed above contractor road around 5:30 this evening. this shows what it looked like from a ground. a tesla spokesperson said some cardboard materials caught fire and the flames then spread to a patch of grass. power lines also then caught fire. no one was hurt and none of the buildings were damaged. firefighters are watching for hot spots after flames broke out on mt. diablo around 3:30 this afternoon. you can see how the fire is in the state park near hunt rosumm. >> because some of that in an unusual move, a spare the air alert was issued tonight through tomorrow. smoke from the wildfires suddenly blew straight into the bay area. this is what it looked like from

our tower cams at sunset. carlos is live in berkeley tonight with how bad the air forced people to change their plans. this is a real mess for a lot of people. >> reporter: that's right. these conditions coming from those wildfires burning on the west coast, the air quality so bad it forced the cancellation of several outdoor practices. as night fell, this orange haze served as a reminder of the smoky conditions seen through much of the day. >> it is sad the fact that people live in this, have to breathe this air. >> reporter: if you were outdoors at all, chances are your noticed the darkness, which had some thinking it was the fog. >> it doesn't seem that smoky actually. it's like pretty stiff breeze right here. >> reporter: eric gellarman was out walking the dogs after

docker practice got canceled. >> a little disappointed. we were a little late forpractid five seconds before we got there, i just said oh, it's canceled. >> reporter: most of the games at the regional sports complex were called off due to air quality. but a few decided to stick it out. others enjoyed the breezy conditions. >> i don't really alter my daily routine because of the smoke. >> reporter: health officials advise people to stay indoors. >> avoid outdoor activities, especially if you suffer from a respiratory condition. >> reporter: if you see or smell smoke, take the necessary steps to protect your health. and you will want to make sure and check if other outdoor activities have been canceled for tomorrow. >> carlos, thank you. all the bad air is having an

impact on the flights at sfo. there are two hour delays on arrivals because of smoke and low ceiling. a san francisco man investigators think started a fire on the border last month is in jail. prosecutors say he set a debris fire that spret quickly and he himself called 911. the fire burned more than 38,000 acres. thousands had to evacuate as a result. one person was killed. this is the view atop san jose's communications hill. the drive up is currently surrounded by barren hillsides, but some neighbors say they see plenty of potential for unique type of development. vineyards. amanda is live tonight with details. amanda? >> reporter: yeah, vineyards to

today, officials in iowa said mollie tibbetts died from multiple sharp force injuries. those are the preliminary autopsy results. her body was found tuesday, more than a month after she disappeared. 24-year-old christian rivera has been charged with the murder. brice yourselves now. scientists say there's no amount of liquor, wine or beer safe for your health. researchers just published a new study, looking at a massive amount of death records and

so out there tonight even still, you can see all the smoke and haze. >> it's really been bad. how long will it continue? sandhya patel is here. not great news. >> tomorrow, it will be awful again. it will start to improve as we head into the weekend. i want to show you the time lapse. at the time the sun was setting, it was so obvious to see the fun going down because of the smoke from the wildfires out west. that reddish hue is from the smoky skies at sunset at 7:52, which is why a spare the air alert has been issued for tomorrow, unhealthy air quality for parts of the bay area. air quality advisory continues through sunday. and that smoke, along with the marine layer, is impacting visibility. down to six miles at sfo. down to four miles in livermore, tracking a deep marine layer.

that means a push towards low clouds. 50s and 60s, the buoy temperatures were in the 60s just a short time ago. 61 degrees right now at half moon bay. so we don't have the strong winds to cause the upwelling of the cold water, so it might be feeling muggy, so dealing with mist and drizzle tomorrow morning. here's a look at the weekend. minor warming expected on saturday. temperatures in the mid 80s. hazy on sunday, but not all parts of the bay area will have to deal with the smoke. so we will see some improvement. a very gray view of san francisco. sfo has been reporting over two-hour delays on arriving flights. if you're flying out tomorrow from our local airports, smoke may impact and cause delays. morning overcast and spotty drizzle. below average temperatures are
