>> cory weiden was investigated by illinois state child services after someone called authorities to report her 8-year-old daughter walking the family dog around the block alone. the police came to the house, investigated the case and did not pursue any charges, but weiden says that apparently was not good enough for the person who called police. >> apparently whoever called the police didn't think the police were a good enough judge of what was okay and not okay. and they called dcfs. the police did not call dcfs. >> the illinois department of children and family services found the call to be unfounded. weiden will be on "good morning america" talking about this. so obviously a different time, you know, back in the day when our parents grew up, you could kind of roam the block. >> my parents would be please, leave. i'm like, mom, i just left the womb.

leniency for cooperation in criminal cases should be banned. he's referring to his former long-time personal attorney michael cohen who's cooperating with the mueller investigation, but it appears he's not the only former trump ally doing so. abc's pierre thomas has the story. >> reporter: he's been friends with president trump for more than a decade. but david pecker, publisher of the national enquirer, has now been granted immunity in exchange for his cooperation with prosecutors. a source telling abc news, pecker has told investigators he worked with president trump's former fixer and personal attorney michael cohen to buy the silence of women who claim to have had affairs with trump and that trump knew about the deals. cohen pleaded guilty earlier this week, admitting his role in the scheme, which he claims was directed by the president himself. prosecutors say the plan to protect trump began in 2015. just after the billionaire launched his campaign. they say pecker, in coordination with cohen and one or more

members of the campaign, offered to help deal with negative stories about trump's relationships with women. specifically assisting the campaign in identifying such stories so they could be purchased and their publication avoided. a year later, the enquirer publisher bought the story of karen mcdougal, a former playboy playmate who claimed to have had an affair with trump. cohen says he worked with pecker to bury it. cohen recorded a conversation with trump where they seemingly discussed buying the rights to the story. a source says pecker told prosecutors he also worked with cohen to buy the silence of stormy daniels and that trump knew about that deal, too. idt's own story has been changing for months. >> this is what he told fox news this week. >> did you know about the payments?

>> reporter: first responders from the mainland, like these from washington, are racing into hawaii to help. while tourists are flocking to airports, trying to get out. what were you thinking knowing that you still had a flight tomorrow? >> i just wanted to get out as fast as possible. just so i didn't have to, i guess, stay for the aftermath. >> reporter: and officials now are warning to get out of the water. we just heard a lifeguard on a megaphone to get out. they don't want them in there. it's just too dangerous. we've been watching as these waves get bigger and bigger. powerful bands are just hours away. gio benitez, abc news, honolulu. >> it's something they will be dealing with through sunday. some of the major airlines are doing what they can by capping airfares. >> united airlines reduced fares from honolulu to san francisco but canceled all flights to and from maui scheduled for today. hawaiian airlines has canceled all island commuter flights today. >> julia weiden is tracking the storm.

>> kendis, stephanie, we are still watching hurricane lane. it is expected to weaken some today. and though it never quite makes landfall in hawaii, it is still going to bring some concerns with regards to flooding rains and rough surf. again, as it heads its way northwestward through the day, it will weaken slightly. we are still expecting to see up to one to three feet of rain in your high-elevation spots and the surf will be quite rough especially on the southeastern sides of the islands. >> we'll keep an eye on hawaii. the state department in the meantime has issued a travel advisory for americans visiting parts of western mexico. it comes days after eight bodies were found inside the tourist resort of cancun. however, it does not include the cancun region itself.s eral
