landslides and flash flooding on the big island. >> water is only getting more extensive, more whitewater. it's coming down one to three inches per hour. the rainfall totals will be measured in feet most certainly as we are just in the beginning of this event. >> reporter: packing winds of up to 130 miles an hour. forecasters keeping a close watch. still, it could lash the islands with severe storm surge, another 20 inches of rain and damaging winds. abc's gio benitez in honolulu. >> we are here in waikiki beach and seeing the waves get bigger and bigger and heard a lifeguard saying to get out of the water because it's just too dangerous. >> there's a lot of uncertainty. what is for sure, though, is that hawaii is going to be impacted by hurricane lane. the question is how bad. >> reporter: people facing long line answer empty shelves at supermarkets as they make final

preparations. >> scared. concerned about the storm. >> reporter: for some of the 300,000 tourists in hawaii this morning, shelters are their only refuge. >> we are afraid of the storm and in frns we don't have storm like that so we decide not to stay near the beach and to go to the shelter. >> reporter: not just people taking shelter. an intern at this resort in maui was given the difficult task of herding floriamingos inside. it will have no impact on the kilauea volcano flow. it is expected to be a major one as it passes by hawaii today and tomorrow. we'll check the latest track from accuweather in a few moments. now to washington where another one of president trump's closest allies has turned against him. the head of "the national enquirer," david pecker, has cut a deal to provide prosecutors with information in the case against michael cohen. this all comes as president trump issues a stern warning about what will happen if he's

impeached. abc's janai norman is breaking down the latest for us. good morning, janai. >> reporter: stephanie, good morning. you know president trump has been defending himself after being implicated by his former attorney, michael cohen, and then he learned it was another close friend who cut an immunity deal in the cohen case. it's been a tough week for president trump as the political and legal implications grow. >> i don't know how you can impeach somebody who has done a great job. i'll tell you what, if i ever got impeached i think the market would crash. i think everybody would be very poor. >> reporter: warning about the prospects of impeachment and still fuming over his former personal attorney and fixer michael cohen turning against him. >> everything is wonderful and then they get ten years in jail and they flip on whoever the next highest one is or as high as you can go. it almost ought to be outlawed. it's not fair. >> what is your message to the president?

>> reporter: david pecker, publisher of "the national enquirer" and a friend of president trump for more than a decade has been granted immunity in exchange with cooperating with prosecutors. pecker said he worked with cohen to buy the silence of women who claim to have affairs with trump. he worked with cohen and one or more members of the campaign to help deal with negative stories about trump's relationships with women. cohen admitted to paying hush money to silence karen mcdougal and porn star stormy daniels claiming he was directed by the president. >> did you know about the payments? >> later on i knew. later on. >> reporter: and prosecutors say the plan to protect trump began back in 2015 after he launched his campaign. the associated press reports "the national enquirer" had a safe full of documents related to hush money payments and other damaging stories about trump. at this point it's unclear whether federal investigators now have ahold of those documents. >> huge development. thank you, janai. the attorney general jeff

sessions is firing back at his boss, the president, who claims sessions never took control of the justice department. in a rare rebuke of the president, sessions released a statement thursday saying he has been in control since day one. president trump has long been furious that sessions recused himself from the russia investigation. >> he took the job and then he said i'm going to recuse myself. i said what kind of a man is this? and, by the way, he was on the campaign. you know, the only reason i gave him the job because i felt loyal. he was an original supporter. >> what kind of man is this? sessions releasing a statement saying while i am attorney general the actions of the justice department will not be improperly influenced by political considerations. many political analysts are now predicting the president will replace sessions but not until after the midterm elections. funeral services for murdered iowa college student mollie tibbetts are set for sunday in her hometown of brooklyn.

the medical examiner has revealed the 20-year-old died from stab wounds. authorities say cristhian rivera, a mexican immigrant in the country illegally, confessed to kidnapping and killing tibbetts. he's due back in court next friday. police have not yet said what was the motive. overseas and pope francis is headed to ireland this weekend as the church copes with multiple sexual abuse scandals including the historic abuse cases in pennsylvania. the pope issued an unprecedented letter to catholics promising to prevent further cover-ups and referring to them for the first time as crimes. but many irish catholics are now demanding more action. crowds for the pope's visit expected to be one-third the size that greeted john paul ii who was the last pope to visit ireland back in 1979. in the meantime, in the wake of that report on clergy abuse, authorities in missouri and the latest to launch investigations in their states into how the church has

name, reality winner, she was working as a contractor in georgia when she printed the secret document. she left the building with the report tucked inside her panty hose. she then mailed it to a news website and got caught. she later pleaded guilty to transmitting national security information. prosecutors say it's the longest sentence ever imposed in a federal media leak case. that is her new reality. >> yeah, that, indeed. three days after customs officials debuted new facial recognition technology at airports across the country they say it's helped them catch an impostor when a man gave a french passport to officers they later found his real i.d. hidden inside his shoe. he was actually from the congo. he's now been sent back to that central african country. the nation's largest grocery chain says it's phasing out plastic bags and plans to be plastic-free by 2025. kroger's has been ordering 6 billion plastic bags each year

good morning, east bay. let's get up and get going. >> this is "abc 7 mornings." >> hi there, good morning. it's friday, august 24th. we made it to friday. >> 4:27 a.m. natasha has the morning off and i did notice yesterday that there was a woman riding her bike down the street and she had a mask on and i don't blame her. >> probably a smart idea. the air quality deteriorated rapidly and it's bad out there today. we'll take a look at that in about two minutes. temperatures when you step outside, me, mid 50s to low 60s. the warm spot san jose at 63 degrees. today is our tenth spare the air and yeah, we're going to have poor air quality. i will show you in a couple minutes. temperatures will be below average once again. mu mid to upper 60s along the coast, upper 70s to low 70s inland. a check of the friday morning commute. >> good morning, mike. we have an issue in the richmond area, taking you in on our

traffic maps. police investigation has a full closure of richmond parkway at san pablo avenue and this will likely be several hours in the making. we will have more details throughout the morning but this is the end of a high-speed chase and does sound like a fatality was involved. walnut creek, a tough commute late yesterday morning. right now we are wide open and we are looking friday light in most areas. we'll check out drive times coming up next. >> thank you. right now some developing news from our live desk, an emergency landing at sfo. united flight 1 from san francisco to singapore was forced to turn around. passengers made it back to sfo and were given refreshments and snacks around 1:30. we are told the plane hit a flock of birds during the flight. passengers are being rebooked on to later flights. also new this morning, san jose police chase a group of young people suspected of a carjacking. >> what started as a car chase ended up on foot. matt keller live for us in san

jose. matt? >> good morning, reggie and jessica. what a wild night for san jose police. first it started as a carjacking and then a pursuit, eventually they arrested several people, all of them were just kids. take a look at the video from where this all ended here in san jose. this is in the area of mclaughlin avenue and lupa avenue. five suspects involved. the officer taking the report was driving down mclaughlin and spotted the car. tried to get them to stop. the driver took off. the police helicopter helped out. police say eventually the car stopped and everyone ran. officers set up a perimeter in the neighborhood, canines were brought in. six juveniles ended up being arrested, two bitten by the dogs, two were taken away on a gurney and put in ambulances and the others handcuffed and put in the back of patrol cars. police say the carjacking victim will get their vehicle back. reporting live in san jose, matt

keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you. the other big stories this morning the poor air quality that we just mentioned with mike. smoke from our wildfires is now pushing into the bay area and it is forcing that spare the air alert. sky 7 video will show you the thick haze hanging over san francisco. the city sent a red alert late yesterday describing the air quality as unhealthy. people with asthma and kids and older adults told to avoid being outdoors for long periods of time. all that bad air is having an impact on flights at sfo. there were two-hour delays on arrivals last night because of the smoke and the low ceilings. airport officials warn we could see more delays today it. >> was noticeable yesterday. 4:30 on the dot, just waking up, another check of your weather and traffic. will the haze hang around today? >> it will improve a little during the evening and overnight hours, but it's going to be out there once again.
