the back of patrol cars. police say the carjacking victim will get their vehicle back. reporting live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you. the other big stories this morning the poor air quality that we just mentioned with mike. smoke from our wildfires is now pushing into the bay area and it is forcing that spare the air alert. sky 7 video will show you the thick haze hanging over san francisco. the city sent a red alert late yesterday describing the air quality as unhealthy. people with asthma and kids and older adults told to avoid being outdoors for long periods of time. all that bad air is having an impact on flights at sfo. there were two-hour delays on arrivals last night because of the smoke and the low ceilings. airport officials warn we could see more delays today it. >> was noticeable yesterday. 4:30 on the dot, just waking up, another check of your weather and traffic. will the haze hang around today? >> it will improve a little during the evening and overnight hours, but it's going to be out there once again.

hi, everybody. my eyes still hurt from what happened yesterday and i stayed inside most of the afternoon. those of you more susceptible to it i feel for you this morning. what we had is a little offshore flow in the northern part of the state that pulled the smoke offshore and then we had the onshore flow near us. that's how small the circulation was. it's enough to bring the smoke in and now bringing in a lot of low clouds with it also. wanted to start down in the south bays because you have the poor air quality right now. your air is unhealthy for everybody and looks like it's going to remain that way for the next several hours. as far as the accuweather 12-hour planner, 60s at the coast, 70s around the bay, starting off in the '50s. your weekend forecast and the latest on lane coming up. >> good morning, mike. so far we're looking quiet in our areas across the bay area but bay bridge toll plaza, one of those normal early busy spots and we have a stack up in the cash lanes on either side of the

toll plaza. camera bouncing around. no high wind advisories in effect. drive times okay with one exception, tracy to dublin, 47 minutes for you. southbound 680 dublin to mission boulevard in the green at 15 and northbound 101 to cupertino wide open at 15 minutes. >> thanks. new this morning, smoke and flames consumed a home in the south bay. firefighters responded to the fire on first avenue that's near willow crest around 2:30 on the campbell and san jose border. you can see the heavy flames rising from the back of that one-story home. we don't know what started the fire happening now, hurricane lane is moving slowly toward the islands of hawaii. >> in the meantime it's delivering large amounts of rain and dangerous surf to maui and the big island. hurricane lane remains a category 3 storm packing winds of 120 miles per hour. a hurricane warning is in effect for maui county and oahu and has dumped more than two feet of

rain in some areas and hawaii's governor has urged people to stock up on supplies and brace for what could be a historic storm. abc news's kendisgibson has the latest. >> more than 20 inches of rain drenching hawaii as hurricane lane closes in. the downpour triggering landslides and flash flooding on the big island. >> you can see major flooding in progress. the water is several feet deep ahead of him. >> reporter: forecasters keeping a close watch on its track saying it likely won't make landfall. but still, could lash the islands with severe storm surge, another 20 inches of rain and damaging winds. abc's geo ben knee tiz is in hawaii. >> we heard a life guard here on a megaphone saying to get out of the water because it's just too dangerous. >> there's a lot of uncertainty. what is for sure is that hawaii is going to be impacted by hurricane lane. the question is how bad. >> people facing long lines and empty shelves at supermarkets as

during the mendocino complex fires. santa clara officials say their efforts on the fire lines were impacted when verizon restricted their internet use because they had exceeded the department's plan limit. verizon has called it a customer support mistake. scammers targeting fire victims are at it again after the carr fire. the "sacramento bee" says they are cracking down on scam artists. police arrested a man who offered bids to repair homes without a license. authorities are warning fire victims scammers may try to steal their identities to claim disaster relief funding. in the east bay one of the two arrested for the murder of a restaurant owner is scheduled to be arraigned. 39-year-old dante holloway and 38-year-old paul piaz of oakland were arrested monday and charged with murdering cindy lee in april. surveillance video here shows the struggle that ended in the 61-year-old's death. the district attorney says the two men were trying to steal her

purse. police say they hope their arrests will help bring closure to the family. >> this incident changed their lives foreverp th they don't have a loved one. >> holloway is scheduled to be in court at 9:00 a.m. piaz waived arraignment and will be in court next month. both could face the death penalty if convicted new details this morning in the death of mollie tibbetts. her family will hold her funeral on sunday. the autopsy released showed tibbetts died of multiple sharp force injuries. she grew up in oakland and moved to iowa 11 years ago and went missing last month. the suspect in her murder led police to her body in an iowa cornfield on tuesday. that man cristhian rivera is an undocumented immigrant if you want a straw in a restaurant in california you may have to ask for one. under a new bill sent to governor brown, restaurants in the state would not be able to give out plastic straws unless a customer asks for one. it would only apply to dine-in

restaurants, fast food, delis and takeout orders are exempt. a look at what's going to happen. you can see there's going to be more mist as you're driving around. we're looking at the western span of the bay bridge. i ran into that this morning. some of my colleagues did too and used their windshield wipers. for the ferry ride it's going to be calm and hazy. poor air quality. same thing for mass transit. we're going to switch gears here and talk a little bit about what's going on with lane. still a very strong hurricane and it's a category 3 right now. it continues to weaken. the thing that i'm noticing and the thing that looks more promising is look how it's becoming oblong. notice it's not as symmetrical and the upper level winds starting to add some wind shear which hurricanes hate and that will start accelerating that weakening trend. the forecast a 2 as it heads past the big island and still

making the left-hand turn, something we have never seen before and weakening down to a 1 as it passes kauai and then stays a 1 as it moves away sunday. the wave heights and storm surge are going to combine together at about 5:00 this evening and that's when we can see the most damage from wave heights to 30 feet and a storm surge six feet. watch the winds, tropical storm in yellow. the evening hours they're starting to head into oahu and could get up to 75-mile-per-hour winds on oahu and 50 to 60-mile-per-hour at the surface. go up about 100 to 200 feet the winds will be faster. the greatest damage is from flooding and as you head into the higher elevations of the islands we'll have wind damage and power outages. bring alexis in and talk about the morning commute. nothing like that to deal with. >> no. >> have a hot spot or two. >> thankfully we have calm

driving conditions this morning. we have an issue, a travel advisory in effect in the richmond area. this is police investigation due to a deadly crash overnight. i believe this happened around midnight. we are working on confirlg details with the concord sheriff. sounds like this is the end of a police pursuit and full closure of richmond parkway at san pablo avenue. no estimate on when the roadway will reopen. this is a busy route. if this lasts far into the morning commute it will be a big deal. westbound 80 looking really good. checked the speed a moment ago. 47 miles an hour. i believe it's faster than that at the moment. so things are looking better. we don't have any significant construction delays along that stretch. you can use that. next traffic update in about ten minutes. sears is closing more stores, two local stos w'titr, h giants ramping up security for the midterm elections and they have a big meeting today. looks like a typical house looks like a typical house from the outside but

a hazy 77 at tahoe. 81 in yosemite. 83 with afternoon sunshine in l.a. as far as what's going on in tahoe, temperatures are going to be a little below average with a high fire danger starting sunday. >> thanks. dozens of sears and kmart stores will be closing nationwide including two in northern california. the kmart in antioch and a sears in santa cruz are among 46 stores listed in the latest wave of closures. sears holdings cooperatirporati announced liquidation sales will start as soon as thursday. in july the company announced more than 70 other stores will be shutting down a pharmaceutical company is recalling medications for babies and young children. king bio is voluntarily recalling 32 medicines due to possible contamination that could cause infection. the products are used to treat things like bed wetting, chicken pox and colic sold between august 2017 and july of this year. we have a full list of the
