overnight. we are tracking the state of emergency in hawaii as hurricane lane bears down on the islands and the nasty air quality in the bay area. good morning, friday, august 24th. a lot going on at 6:00 a.m. thanks for joining us. natasha has the day off. >> you are never more than seven minutes away from the accuweather forecast. meteorologist mike nicco and is that air quality going to improve soon? >> it is improving in some areas. you can see the yellow right there and that's because of the marine layer and its influence to bring in cleaner air over the ocean unlike the dirt owe area yesterday and shoving some of the dirty air down into the east bay valleys around livermore and then down into the south bay. the red is unhealthy for us, the orange unhealthy for the most sensitive. we are under a spare the air monitor because the smoke could mix back in into the afternoon hours. if your eyes were burning yesterday and heart to breathe, stay inside. starting in the mid to upper 50s and ending up in the office 60s

and 70s. >> had eye irritation yesterday. we are looking okay for the friday morning commute for the most part we have been friday light and one of our incidents on our main highways. westbound before san marco boulevard just getting word from chp a two-car crash was cleared off to the side, but we definitely have some residual delays from the pittsburgh area. some of that is typical volumes filling in as well. hopefully that will thin out. we can check out the drive time in a few minutes. northbound 101 looking okay around the 880 interchange and the south bay has been quiet. next traffic update at 6:10 thank you. new this morning, a serious crash in richmond. you can see a dark colored sedan pinned underneath a semi truck at richmond parkway and san pablo avenue. f'ce t sed car.fm the car didn't stop, leading to a pursuit. the car then ran a red light and collided with the truck.

the driver was killed. chp says the intersection is blocked and drivers will need to take an alternate route an international flight from sfo was forced to make an emergency landing this morning. >> the united airlines plane turned around over the pacific after a passengers say they hit a flock of birds. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live at sfo. amy? >> hi, jessica. the passengers are still here. some are trying to get some sleep at the gate. we heard from one tired passenger inside who said she really wishes united airlines had gotten them hotel rooms so they could get some sleep. here is a picture of the nose of the plane. no broken windows but the pilot told the passengers that they hit about 25 birds and says some got into the engine. he told them they were turning eparing for the possibility of a crash landing. >> an hour and a half out we heard an announcement the pilot said we had to come back.

he said had he welt anything -- and no one beside me did and neither did i but a flock of birds hit the nose of the plane. they had mentioned the engines could be involved, one or both. everyone was calm. we turned around and dumped about 100,000 pounds of fuel into the pacific ocean and headed back to san francisco. >> reporter: got rid of the fuel in case they crashed. it was a safe landing. everyone is fine. united brought out some snacks for everyone while they rebooked them. united airlines put out a statement saying they're doing what they can to get them to their destination as soon as they can. those on board tell us they heard they were going to be leaving after 8:00 this morning. so quite a delay. but they are safe. reporting live at sfo, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you. speaking of flights, this morning several flights to maui and hawaii from three bay area airports are canceled or delayed

because of hurricane lane. >> the hurricane has weakened to winds of 120 miles an hour. it's a slow moving hurricane and expected to bring rain for an extended period. at sfo, the uso center is asking for donations packed with service members and their families because of cancellations and delays. >> the center is full, people sleeping and trying to kind of figure out what their next step is going to be. we expect to see more as the storm continues to hit the hawaiian islands. >> as you know there's a lot of service members who live and work on oahu. officials say hurricane lane is causing flooding on the big island. flash flooding and mudslides expected throughout the hawaiian islands. >> now a live desk update. >> at the live desk a magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit in eastern peru overnight close to the border with brazil and bolivia. the quake happened just after 2:30 this morning. no word on any damage or

casualties. in the south bay investigators are looking for more young victims after san jose police arrested and charged a music teacher with indecent exposure. >> bill culvert accused of exposing himself to three girls between august 2017 and august of 2018. two of them were 10 years old and the other one was 8. detectives say he was also a music teacher at the school of music and art in san jose for the past decade. if you or anyone you know were a victim call police we have new details about why san francisco's public health director resigned. according to the examiner barbara garcia is accused of using her authority toward a company that paid her wife. sources close to the matter say the city's attorney's office and department of human resources had been investigating for months. they say garcia was given the choice to resign or be fired. today marks four years since a 6.0 magnitude earthquake hit napa and killed one person and caused more than $500 million in

losses. it struck at 3:20 in the morning on august 24th, 2014. today renovation is in high gear for the city's historic courthouse. according to the napa valley register workers began removing the metal beams jammed against the outside front walls. the supports are no longer needed to keep the building from tumbling into brown street if there's another quake. renovations on the courthouse are expected to be done by the end of the year. >> breaking news from the abc 7 live desk. >> we are still following breaking news from southern california. see the flames there, the aftermath from a tanker fire in hawthorne in los angeles county, right near the airport, right near l.a.x. if you're m familiar with that area, 105 in the area is shut down causing a big traffic nightmare for commuters this morning and folks who are trying to get to the airport, 105, one of the main highways to get to l.a.x., and also beach cities like manhattan beach and redondo. a big deal in southern california.

san rafael. you are dealing with cleaner air so far. the spare the air is still out there for today so keep that in mind as we go from clouds to hazy sunshine and temperatures that will be in the comfortable range once again. overcast tonight, patchy drizzle near the coast and san francisco. and a slight warming trend this weekend. if you're stee mid 50s to low 60s from about 56 to 61 is our spread. as we look at the cloud cover you can see it's well into the central valley and even by noon still hanging around the bay as it transitions over to the haze. 3:00, as much sunshine as we can and by 7:00 it's starting to work back. down in the south bay at least in the heart of the bay, mid 70s, 80s around gilroy, on the peninsula, low to mid 70s today. mild along the coast, low to mid 60s with a little less sunshine than the rest of us. mid 60s in downtown. mid to upper 70s along the north bay in the valleys, 69 to 73 our spread along the east bay shore. and as you head inland we'll

have about 78 to 84. as far as tonight's temperatures there you go. we'll be in the low to upper 50s slightly cooler and not as cloudy as it has been in our inland neighborhoods. that extra sunshine for saturday to sunday means warmer but as we head towards next week, real fall flavor into the forecast as most of us are in the 60s and 70s. here's alexis. >> taking a look at the bay bridge toll plaza from our emeryville camera, i know a little bit hazy out there this morning. you can see the camera bouncing around a bit as well. i know metering lights have been on almost an hour, 5:25 the official time. honestly things pretty light today. it's not really stacked up too far into the maze there and if you look on the far right traffic just zooming through, the carpool lanes. no delays this morning. lot of green on our traffic maps with a couple exceptions. of course tracy one of those, westbound 205 to 580, nine miles an hour and 11 miles an hour respectively. have not had any blocking incidents. mass transit has looked fine as well. big head's up for this weekend.

and la. sin rou windseaching speeds up to 135 miles an hour near the eye of the storm. >> a live look outside, bad air quality over the bay bridge, a spare the air alert as smoke blows into the bay area. we are warning everyone that's heading out the door, probably not a great day to exercise outside, right, mike. >> not in the morning. it's definitely going to be ugly the next couple hours as smog august is entrenched into our forecast and the biggest highlighter, the top story as far as the weather goes. we are seeing a little bit of clearing out there. to the graphic and you can see that we've got moderate air quality in the north bay, the coast and central bay and south central bay but our east bay valleys where the air quality is poor. in the south bay that's where we have the most unhealthy air. the trend has been for the marine layer to keep us on a clearing trend at least as far as getting cleaner air to roll into the forecast.

south bay. santa clara firefighters responded to the fire on hurst avenue near willow crest around 2:30 this morning. this is on the campbell and san jose border. and you see those big flames and that heavy smoke coming from the back of the one-story home. fire officials say the house was under construction and nobody was living there. they evacuated several neighboring homes and those families have been allowed to go back home new this morning san jose police chase a group of young people suspected in a carjacking. >> what started as a chase ended up on foot. abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live in san jose. matt? >> what a wild night for san jose police. first a carjacking and then a pursuit. in the end they arrested several people all of them were kids. take a look at video of where it all ended. last night here in san jose, this is the area of mclaughlin avenue and tourist road. the carjacking took place just before 10:00 last night. five suspects involved. the officer taking the report was then driving car and tried o

impact on flights at sfo. there were two-hour delays on arrivals last night because of the smoke. airport officials warn we could see more delays today happening now, hurricane lane is slowly churning towards hawaii. >> it is delivering large amounts of rain and dangerous surf to maui and the big island. officials reporting catastrophic flooding on the big island. the hurricane has been downgraded to a category 3 storm packing maximum sustained winds of 120 miles an hour. a hurricane warning is in effect for maui and oahu. flash flooding and mudslides are expected throughout the islands. >> the place i would evacuate to would be the mainland. anywhere where you go you're going to get the same. >> several flights to maui and honolulu are canceled or delayed because of hurricane lane. breaking news from the abc 7 live desk. >> another check ofyou see thesg in. this is the aftermath of a

tanker fire in hawthorne which is right in l.a. county right near l.a.x. if you're familiar with this area this is westbound interstate 105 and that entire area shut down, the westbound portion of the freeway and it's a very heavily trafficked freeway. it goes right to l.a.x. we just got brand new information from our sister station kabc and learned interstate 105 is expected to be closed throughout the day. that will be impacting anyone trying to get to l.a.x. if you have friends or family in the area trying to fly out of l.a.x. this morning, you may want to give them a head's up. also affect something beach cities that this freeway does go to happening now, firefighters are watching for flare-ups from a fire outside the tesla factory in fremont. sky map 7 shows the flames above contractor road around 5:30 yesterday. new cell phone video from an abc 7 news viewer shows what the flames looked like from the ground. a tesla spokesperson says cardboard

flames spread to a patch of grass. nobody was hurt and none of the buildings were damaged sacramento lawmakers will hold an informational hearing on verizon's throttling of the south bay firefighters' data during the mendocino complex fires. santa clara officials say their efforts on the fire lines were impacted when verizon restricted their internet use because they had exceeded the department's plan limit. verizon has called it a customer support mistake. investigators are saying a san francisco man started the klamathon fire on the oregon border last month and is now in jail. >> john skoda turned himself in. prosecutors say skoda set a debris fire that spread quickly and it was skoda who actually called 911. the klamathon fire burned more than 38,000 acres and thousands of people had to evacuate and dozens of homes were destroyed. also one person was killed.

you are never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. let's see what lane did while we were sleeping. you can see a symmetrical storm, nice and circular there, but now look at your starting to see the effects of wind shear as it's pulling the top off to the southwest. that's usually a sign of it starting to weaken. we're saying it's a category 3 a major hurricane with 120 mile per hour winds. into the evening hours it does slide to the west of the big island, still producing flooding rains there and then starting to produce flooding rains on maui and oahu through the afternoon and evening hours. it dprops a three to a one and then makes the left-hand turn overnight into saturday and weakens down to a 1 as it slides south of kauai which had a flood in april. ground saturated there, more rain means more flooding and that's going to the biggest issue with this storm. we've seen the flooding on the big island, but it's going to flood the other islands also and the winds are going to be much

elevations. trees coming down and power outages are a big issue. near the coast, you can see wave heights up to 30 feet and the storm surge that will be about 4 to 6 degrees higher than average which means we'll have flooding along the coast and beach erosion. notice the fastest of the winds as the strongest of the waves roll in, the fastest of the winds come in also. that is going to weaken things and make them damaged and susceptible to falling apart and creating chaos during the overnight hours into tomorrow morning. we're looking at san mateo bridge there. it's pretty cloudy, a little drizzle as you head near the coast for your commute. here's alexis to tell us more about what to expect when you head out. >> overall we've been friday light this morning and haven't had any major issues and checking out the bay bridge toll plaza, metering lights are on, but boy, i don't know if they need to be. ze approachingl are looking pre.

we did have an earlier crash on westbound -- i should say 4, not 80, before san marco boulevard. earlier crash has cleared to the shoulder and you're seeing stop-and-go traffic regardless. we'll check out drive times. westbound 580, 68 minutes for you, not terrible and westbound 4 antioch to concord the earlier crash didn't help in the yellow at 27 minutes. southbound san rafael to san francisco looking great out of north bay at 16 minutes. in san francisco you will soon have a new way to get around. a new ride share company is headed to the city with a specific target audience in mind. it's called safer. the company's ceo says the app offers riders the option of choosing a female driver be. it also gives those female drivers a say as well. they can make a choice who they want to pick up and who they don't. reaction to the new ride share alternative depends on who you ask. >> yeah. just see the cultural shift, yeah. >> i think it's unnecessary, yeah. >> i have [ inaudible ] women b

announced they were turning around. they said the plane hit a flock of birds about 25 of them hit the nose of the plane and he was worried some got into the engine as well. the plane looks fine but the pilot was concerned. they came back about 1:30 this morning and he dumped all of the fuel into the pacific ocean in case they did crash. we asked if it was tense on board. >> to be perfectly honest it wasn't the mood on the flight was not of an emergency flight. it was handled well. >> united airlines provided snacks while they rebooked the passengers who told us the landing was uneventually. united is doing what it can to get the passengers on to their destination. we did hear from one traveler who is inside and past security sent us an e-mail saying she wished united had gotten them hotel rooms so they could get

sleep after the scare. at sfo, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. new details this morning in the death of mollie tibbetts. her family will hold her funeral on sunday. the autopsy released yesterday showed tibbetts died of multiple sharp force injuries. tibbetts grew up in oakland and moved to iowa 11 years ago. she went missing while out jogging last month. the suspect in her murder led police to her body in an iowa cornfield on tuesday and cristhian rivera is an undocumented immigrant president trump continues to receive poor marks from a majority of americans on most issues except for one. the associated press and norc center released a poll that finds 60% of americans disapprove of mr. trump's work as president compared with 38% who approve. the president gets his best marks from the public on the economy. 51% say they approve of his handing on that issue happening today tech

companies are getting together to discuss the upcoming elections. buzzfeed obtained an e-mail about a meeting. facebook, google, microsoft, and snapchat plan to gather at twitter's headquarters. the companies expect to discuss cyber security among other problems. as you know facebook and twitter have faced public scrutiny over how they reacted to reports of foreign intelligence manipulating users before the 2016 election and now your morning money report, it appears elon musk is taking another step to take tesla private. >> according to bloomberg he has hired morgan stanley to advise him on the plan, but the investment firm is not advising tesla's board or committee formed to evaluate proposals. musk shocked the financial world this month when he tweeted he had secured funding earlier this month and later indicated he did not have the financing. the tweet has triggered an investigation by the securities and exchange commission. dozens of sears and kmart stores will be closing nationwide including two in

northern california. the kmart in antioch and a sears in santa cruz are among 46 listed in the latest wave of closures. yesterday sears holdings corporation announced liquidation sales will start as soon as thursday. the store expected to close by november. ? july the company announced more than 70 other stores will be shutting down a live look at the new york stock exchange. trading getting under way. investors throughout the day will be watching the fed chief who will speak at a monetary conference in jackson hole, wyoming. if you want a straw in a restaurant in california you may have to ask for one. under a new bill sent to governor brown, restaurants in the state would not be able to give out plastic straws unless a customer asks for one. it would only apply to dinen in restaurants, fast food places, cafes, delis as well as takeout orders are exempt. in the south bay a baron hillside may be transformed into vineyards.

longer than they've been all week. we will transition to hazy sunshine and not sold it's going to be as hazy as yesterday. below average highs sold on that. clouds return a little drizzle near the coast like we're dealing with and no extreme weather the next seven days. here's why i believe things will be different today. a little change in the upper level winds starting to come from the gulf of alaska and make the left-hand turn and head off to the east. that's going to take all the smoke that was coming down from canada, washington and oregon and move it away from us. we'll have to deal with our smoke and actually it's starting to push the smoke south and east of us. hopefully fingers crossed better air quality this afternoon than yesterday and this morning. temperature wise 72 in milpitas, 86 in gilroy. peninsula temperatures haven't changed much at all. 70 san mateo to 73 palo alto and 68 in millbrae. still mild along the coast, low to mid 60s. mid 60s downtown south san francisco and sausalito. low 60s at the north bay coast.

then head inland temperatures about 25 degrees warmer mid to upper 70s. everybody in the 70s berkeley and oakland, 69. as you move inland no air conditioning needed. upper 70s to mid 80s. my accuweather seven-day forecast a little faster sunshine saturday and sunday and warmer but we're cooler than average and a touch of fall with highs in the 60s and 70s. >> good morning, mike. yeah, taking a look at the roads, things have been friday light this morning. we have not had significant issues with this. still is a travel advisory in the richmond area, closed at san pablo avenue due to a police investigation. we did confirm that this was the end of a police pursuit that ended in a crash and unfortunately one person did not survive. the investigation continues and that intersection is closed. use 80 or hilltop for an alternate. a new crash in the last few minutes, westbound 80 past powell and emeryville but it cleared just as quickly. we had it on the left shoulder

if you're just joining us or heading out here are seven things to know. number one, a united airlines fliht to singapore safely made an emergency landing at sfo early this morning. passengers say they were told the plane's nose hit a flock of birds and had to turn around. the flight is scheduled to take off again at 8:45 number two, san jose police say they have six suspects in custody accused of carjacking and they are all under 18. they were arrested after an officer spotted the car and launched a pursuit number three, a car is pinned under a semi truck in richmond after an overnight pursuit. contra costa county deputies have blocked off the intersection at richmond parkway and san pablo avenue while they investigate this crash. number four, officials say hurricane lane is causing catastrophic flooding on the big island. the slow moving hurricane has been downgraded to a category 3
