as it moves closer even if it stays far away you get significant rainfall and flash flooding and mud sideliniaing w. remember outside tropical storm force wince can go up to 125 miles. close to maui. saturday by the time it gets to kauai. >> amy. now to new trouble for president trump. david pecker, the president's friend and publisher of "the national enquirer" given immunity in exchange for information about former trump attorney michael cohen. abc's chief national affairs correspondent tom llamas joins us with all the latest. good morning, tom. >> reporter: amy, good morning to you. it's the type of high-profile split that would likely grace the cover of "the national enquirer," but this time the story involves the tabloid. "the national enquirer's" boss, david pecker, a longtime trump ally and friend talking to prosecutors and according to a source telling them the president knew about hush money deals during the campaign. this morning, another jolt to the president's inner circle. tabloid king david pecker, head of "the national enquirer" and a

longtime trump ally granted immunity by federal prosecutors. to the president? >> reporter: a source telling abc news he agreed to provide information about michael cohen, the president and the criminal investigation into campaign finance violations. >> in april of 1999 when we acquired american media -- >> reporter: pecker's company, ami owns some of the biggest tabloid and gossip magazines. and in court documents related to cohen's guilty plea prosecutors say two months after the president announced his candidacy in june of 2015, pecker and cohen hatched a plan to deal with negative stories against trump by identifying such stories so they could be purchased and their publication avoided. according to the documents, the two men coordinated on silencing two women who claimed to have sexual affairs with the president before he ran for office. former playmate karen mcdougal

"the national enquirer" endorsing him, a first for the tabloid while trashing his opponents including the baseless claim that senator ted cruz's father was involved in the jfk assassination, then candidate trump promoting that story. >> they got o.j. they got edwards. they got this. i mean, if that was "the new york times" they would have gotten pulitzer prizes for their reporting. >> reporter: but now the president slamming those who turned on him. >> everything is wonderful. then get ten years in jail and flip on the next highest one is

or as high as you can go. it almost ought to be outlawed. it's not fair. >> reporter: and we've now learned the relationship between the president and david pecker so close that sources tell us "the national enquirer" actually kept a safe containing trump-related documents. >> and, tom, the manhattan district attorney, there are reports already that they are considering charges against the trump organization. >> yeah, this is brand-new but also very, very early in the process. "the new york times" is reporting that the manhattan d.a.'s office is considering pursuing criminal charges against the trump organization and two senior company officials specifically looking at how the organization accounted its reimbursement to michael cohen for that $130,000 payment to stormy daniels. again, guys, this is still very early in the stages. >> tom, as always, thank you. >> very rough week at the white house. part of that is the feud between president trump and jeff sessions. the attorney general uncontrahar

uncharacteriuncharacte uncharacteristically firing back at the president's latest attack and then just moments later he was over at the white house for what was surely a very awkward face-to-face meeting where we are told that fight didn't even come up. abc's chief justice correspondent pierre thomas. he just blasted the attorney general again on twitter. >> reporter: cecilia, good morning, the tit for tat continues. the president is tweeting in response to sessions firing back at him suggesting the ag should be investigating hillary clinton and former fbi director james comey. the president apparently can't let go of his anger about sessions recusing himself from the russia investigation. his attacks on twitter constant recently, but in that new interview with fox it appeared to get personal. >> jeff sessions, never took control of the justice department and it's sort of an incredible thing. he took the job and then he said i'm going to recuse myself. i said, what kind of a man is this? >> reporter: now, sessions typically ignores the president's attacks, but this time he's pushing back in a statement saying, i took control

of the department of justice the day i was sworn in. while i'm attorney general the actions of the department of justice will not be improperly influenced by political considerations, end quote. >> it was a stunning statement, pierre. it seems to not be a question of whether the president will fire jeff sessions but when. especially on capitol hill people wondering before or after the midterms. >> reporter: that's a great question, cecilia. some senate republicans are circling the wagons around sessions warning president trump not to fire him. one senator saying forcing sessions out would be, quote, bad for the country. others like senator lindsey graham suggesting that while the president has a right to an attorney general he has faith in, firing sessions before the midterm elections is a nonstarter. but graham said there will come a point sooner rather than later where it will be time to have a new face at the justice department. but a growing number of law enforcement officials are worried that president trump is more concerned about loyalty than the rule of law and that he's trying to control the justice department, cecilia. >> that was a major shift in

toneroeryo >> thank you cecelia. and now to embattled california congressman duncan hunter who is in court on charges he and his wife used $250,000 in campaign funds on themselves. abc's linsey davis with more. >> reporter: the hunters appeared in court defiant and entered pleas of not guilty. while federal law forbids spending of campaign funds for personal purposes, according to the 47-page indictment the couple did just that, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on travel, tuition, gas, groceries, even dental work. overnight republican congressman duncan hunter on the defense. >> my campaign did make mistakes. there was money spent on things, not by me but by the campaign and i paid that back before my last election. i paid back $60,000 after i did an objective audit. this is pure politics. >> reporter: earlier in the day the california representative

and his wife margaret pleading not guilty to federal charges they used a quarter of a million dollars in campaign money to pay for personal expenses. prosecutors allege they illegally used more than $15,000 of campaign funds for airline tickets and hotel rooms including a lavish trip to italy, more than $11,000 at costco, $6,000 for their children's tuition. $3,000 on fast food and even disguised family dental bills paid with campaign funds as a charitable donation for smiles for files for life. when the lawmaker didn't have money to buy shorts, his wife advised him to buy it at a golf shop so they could characterize it as golf balls for wounded warriors. the couple stood next to each other in court, but they appeared to avoid eye contact. hunter pointed directly to his wife's involvement in his finances. >> when i went to iraq in 2003 the first time i gave her power of attorney and she handled my finances throughout my entire military career and that continued on when i got to congress. she was also the campaign

manager. so whatever she did, that will be looked at too, i'm sure, but i didn't do it. >> the investigation started more than seven years ago ntain the indictment is politically motivated. >> the u.s. government can do what they want whenever they want to and they've showed that against me and against trump. >> reporter: hunter says he has no intention of going anywhere vowing to stay in the race in november's upcoming congressional election. >> we're going to fight through it and win and the people get to vote in november. >> reporter: under california law because hunter won the primary in june his name cannot be removed from the ballot. also california does not allow write-ins. so these allegations could put a traditionally republican seat up for grabs. >> definitely up for grabs. we'll watch this play out in court it looks like. >> yes. >> thank you very much. now to the very latest on the murder of mollie tibbetts. preliminary autopsy results have been released as we learn more about those final moments of her life. abc's alex perez has the story.

>> reporter: according to a preliminary autopsy report, mollie tibbetts died from multiple sharp force injuries indicating that she was stabbed to death. >> mr. rivera, did you kill mollie tibbetts? >> reporter: a judge ordering the suspect, 24-year-old cristhian rivera held on a $5 million cash bond. >> mr. rivera, you have been charged with murder in the first degree. >> reporter: investigators say rivera followed tibbetts when she was out for a run, abducted and killed her, then put her in the trunk of his car and dumped her body in a cornfield. this morning, we are learning more details about rivera. his girlfriend, iris monarrez attended the bond hearing attended the same high school as mollie and yearbook photos show them both at the same school. they were even friends on facebook. investigators say there is no evidence they actually knew each other saying in a small town it's not unusual for people who go to the same school together to be friends on facebook without being personally acquainted. and the suspect has not yet entered a plea.

the colorado murder of that pregnant mother and her two daughters. a video surfacing showing her husband, the triple homicide suspect talking about affairs and offering relationship advice. what could it all mean for the case? abc's eva pilgrim is here with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this video was a presentation for a class. why relationships fail and how to fix them. a seemingly innocent subject at the time. now a piece of the investigation. six years before he was charged for the murders of his pregnant wife and two daughters, chris watts posted this video on his youtube channel, a presentation he gave about why relationships fail for a communications class. >> commitment is weak, the relationship is full of doubt and the relationship deteriorates faster. >> reporter: in the nine-minute video watts hits on some issues police say plagued his own marriage with shanann like his alleged infidelity with a co-worker. >> even at the job you might

right out and say, sometimes when you have children, the lust and the desire leave your relationship and you think you may be better off with another person, i guarantee you that's going to come in as evidence at trial for motive. >> i don't think it's going to come in at all. the idea he is suggesting if a relationship is going south, these are what -- the things that can happen. what does that have to do -- he doesn't talk about, oh, and the remedy is go ahead and kill your spouse. so, he's just talking about -- >> i think the jury can figure that out. >> say it again. >> i think the jury can figure that out. if two and two still equal four they've got him saying the love, the desire, the lust, he says, his words, not mine are gone from a relationship after having children. i mean, the jury can figure out and, again, the state doesn't have to prove motive, dan, but here's motive on a silver platter. >> but, you know, again, i don't think it will come into

evidence, mu lech less be a smog gun. i think a court will say, what does this have to do with this case? >> let's also talk about behavior. we've seen him, we've heard from this woman that says she saw them on vacation where she describes chris as stand offish. there's that porch interview that many people say he was acting strange. any clues in that there, dan? >> look, i think the porch interview is critical. the fact he looks stand offish is irrelevant. so porch interview is critical because -- >> i agree. >> it will demonstrate he was lying when he's coming out there, oh, you know, please, just come back. even if you take his version of the facts, he knew she was dead. he knew his kids were dead and he's pretending as if, oh, i just want you to come back. that's going to be devastating. >> dan, you are so right about that. they're going to play that in front of the jury and not -- in addition to that, when you are supposed to be determining his credibility which is the sole promise of a jury and got him right there lying according to his own statement later about what happened, how could they believe what his attorneys say at trial if they've already got him on video lying. >> so, we agree on that but,

nancy, do you agree that the stand offishness doesn't matter? i mean, so someone says they were on vacation -- >> doesn't mean a hill of beans. i mean, look at your own family f t ot g. l'sala artling defense he laid out for himself. he says his wife killed the children and then he strangled her quickly. believable? >> it's not even really a defense. it's basically saying i should be convicted of manslaughter, not murder because it's not a defense to say, oh, she did this and therefore i killed her. that's basically saying i acted in the heat of passion as a result of a lesser conviction. >> dan, yeah, yeah, he could argue that he should get involuntary or voluntary manslaughter because he was so angry and acted in a rage. but i really think if you analyze the time line and the physical evidence of the bodies, that defense will not work at trial. >> tough defense. >> i think the headline is she said she agreed with you at one point. >> yeah.

we're going to speak with corey widen and her 8-year-old daughter dorothy in a moment. first a closer look at their story.orning a parentg bate raging after the police were called on this mother and daughter. >> i saw the police just there like the police car and i heard the like sirens coming. >> i said, did i do something wrong? she said how old is she. i said she's 8. she said, okay, we got a call she was 5 or under. >> reporter: 8-year-old dorothy was out by herself walking her dog marshmallow in her chicago neighborhood earlier this month when someone called the cops. that call leading to a visit from police and an investigation from the department of children and family services. >> they found it unfounded but it took a lot to get to that point. >> reporter: lenore skenazy, an advocate for the free-range parenting movement, says independence is important for children. >> when you give them independence it's a chance for

them to become resilient. >> reporter: earlier utah's governor signed a bill giving parents the freedom to allow their children to do more activities independently. without being penalized for child neglect like walking to school, playing outside and staying home alone. new york and texas are now considering similar legislation illinois department of children and family services says we did what the people of illinois ask us to do, we investigated. we found no wrongdoing on the part of this mother and we closed the case last week. so, mom, corey and daughter dorothy and their little dog marshmallow are joining us live. i have to ask you what your initial reaction was when that doorbell rang and you saw police on the other side of the door. >> shock, anger, fear. my first response was i thought they were there for fund-raising or something. when i found out what the call was about, i just couldn't believe it. >> then i'm sure you felt equally appalled it was a neighbor that called police. what do you say to people who say 8 years old is too young to walk a dog on a neighborhood

street? >> i would say every 8-year-old is different. every neighborhood is different. every parent is different. so you can't make an overall judgment like that. >> yeah, talk a little about where you live. your neighborhood and why you felt it was safe for dorothy to walk marshmallow. >> we live in a beautiful neighborhood. we're very fortunate. we live on the north shore of chicago, wilmette, illinois, it's safe, clean, beautiful. we're very lucky. we stretch and sacrifice to be there but that's why because it's safe. >> dorothy, why do you like walking marshmallow? >> iseallyun walking him. when he walks on this side and on the sidewalk, i like that he's very fluffy and stuff like that. >> he is super cute and i'm sure this is -- i know this is a chore. i have a chore for my children to walk the dog. this is something you think is important for dorothy and you believe you get to make that decision as a mother. >> absolutely.

yeah, i also homeschool my kids. so dorothy, this was something we did to start giving her more independence because i didn't feel she had enough so i wanted to make that happen. >> the department did what they had to do in terms of the law, investigating you and your family. what does that do to your children to see and feel what happens when an investigator comes to your home and it's a pretty invasive process? >> very invasive and it's traumatizing for the kids always and there's no way to shield them from it. i do think that changes need to be made because the call should have never gotten as far as it was. the initial call was for an unattended 5-year-old and once they knew i didn't even have a 5-year-old it should have stopped there. i don't think it should have made it past the hotline that a little girl walking her dog needs to be investigated. >> what do you hope people take away from the story? >> don't judge a book by its cover. you don't know every situation. you don't know every child and that when you do things like this, you overwhelm an already overwhelmed system with nuisance

good morning, east bay. let's get up and get going. >> this is abc 7 mornings. >> happy friday to you. it's 8:27. i'm reggie aqui from abc 7 mornings. a serious crash in richmond means trouble for some of your commutes. take a look at the sedan pinned underundernea underneath a semi truck at richard avenue and san pablo avenue. that car eventually collided with a truck and the driver was killed. the chp says the intersection is blocked. alexis smith has been watching this for some time now. >> yeah, all morning. and this is easily our biggest trouble spot here, reggie. we've got some long delays. if you are trying to use richard parkway or san pablo after, those surface streets jammed for maybe 20 to 30-minute delays. so i would definitely avoid them. stick to hilltop or interstate 80 for an alternate. other than that, we are fairly friday light. westbound 580, tracy to dublin, the only one in the yellow here
