now from. now from net net 7, breaking news. >> coming out of hayward. a tanker is leaning and shut down in both directions. let's look at the vantage point from sky 7. the tanker appears to have several containers on the back of it. one clearly missing in the space in the center. from what we understand full of s sulfuric acid. and we have a tremendess traffic back up along 880 in hayward. nobody has been injured. however, there is no estimate as to when those lanes will reopen. donot know where this truck originated from or where it was going or what company it belonged to. this was issued about 1:15 this afternoon.

we know again all lanes of i-880 in both directions were blocked because of that truck leaking the hazardous substance. you can see in the red and especially the purple. the purple is where the leak actually happened and the red surrounding in all directions. it traffic is being diverted at 92 at winden avenue. that's what we're getting from this update. traffic is back said up in a major way as we zoom out from sky 7, the traffic appears to be from this vantage point backed up for miles and miles, especially if the spill happened just a couple of hours ago. let's get to right now hayward fire department public don joining us on the phone. can you tell us a little bit of the circumstances surrounding this because we're looking at back up for miles on the

roadways. >> caller: about 12:30 this afternoon there was a truck on when it realized that was leaking its product that it was containing. pulled over and the called 911. we got there and realized that it was a significant leak. there was a vapor cloud that we felt that the need shut down the freeway in both directions. initially it was one direction as the wind shifted. we shut down both freeways. so unfortunately but we had to do that for the safety of the public. >> don, you mentioned that vapor cloud. we are getting reports there was a small fire. i don't know the nature of sulfuric or nitric acid but i tt do not know of.ly f. however, i'm not on scene yet.

i'm making my way there and i'll get more information as i arrive. but there was a small fire. the can company that was there put it out. like i said it was small. i think it had something to do with the ice plants or greenery or shrubbery around there. i think it started a small vegetation fire. >> our viewers are taken a look at sky 7 and taz moves side to side along 880, we could see the back up is for miles. >> the teamnow. there was an initial report of 300 gallons of that product. so that product was leaking out. so it's either -- has completely leaked out or is in the process of doing that where they're

that is because there's been a hazmat situation a chemical spill in that purple area you see on the right-hand side of the screen. if that purple section is where a chemical truck spilled and leaked sulfuric and nitric acid, about 300 gallons of the on to the roadways. we know from hayward fire that they decided to shut down both directions because of the gravity of this. no people have been injured. now taking a live picture from 24 ground, this is from our photographer thomas fiche who is nearby at the southbound mall in hayward. this is about two blocks from the exit there. do tom on the line? we don't. but you can see a close up of the tank chemical truck, one of the barrels and i can only speculate on this. there seemed to be several

barrels on the back of a flat-bed style truck. there was a gap miss in thing center and we can only assume this is the barrel that fell off or in some can capacity rolled off behind the the fence very close to the ground southland mall. it's lined with chemical something and a few vapors coming from it. we also got reports of a small fire on the roadways. we don't know if that's exactly from the sulfuric or nitric acid. but you can see that truck and how the roadways, 880, in hayward completely empty because of that. so many thanks to you for tuning in. we will, of course have much more on news on air at the news at 4:00 and on for your sport? >> he's taking off like he knows
