around this area is backed up due to the hazmat situation. the northbound 880 lanes reopened a few minutes ago. we ended up taking surface streets to avoid 880 altogether because of the lane closures. the leak is near winton avenue near the interstate. the sulfuric and nitric acid spill, as you mentioned, was reported after 12:30 this afternoon. no injuries have been reported, but a shelter in place was issued for the surrounding area, which essentially tells residents to stay indoors and close their windows until the shelter in place is lifted. we've seen crews wearing hazmat suits. they've been cleaning up this after stopping the leak. and right now we're told that they're working to neutralize the substance on the ground. it's believed that about 300 gallons may have spilled. so, again, that's why it's taking -- it's taking several

hours for hazmat crews to actually be able to clean up the situation and neutralize this acid. but again, as you mentioned, northbound 880 lanes just reopened minutes ago. but as you can see, still major backup as a result. i'll send it back to you guys. >> sounds like they cannot be more careful. let's talk about the nature of these acids as they try to remove it. they are quite caustic, aren't they? carlos? we may have lost -- oh, g ahead. >> reporter: yeah, i'm sorry, repeat that. >> we were talking about the nature of the acids, how caustic, and what kind of irritation they can cause to folks, of course they need to be very careful removing them. >> reporter: as far as anyone in the area and they breathe it, it's a heavy amount and, of course, that could cause irritation, burning to the eyes, so far again we haven't seen any

those powerful bands over maui. it is windy, it is rainy, and forecasters say it's about to get a lot worse. fierce winds here blowing out hotel windows. another concern, strong winds are definitely helping to fuel the fire. this fast-moving brush fire erupting in the middle of the night. multiple fires now burning, dozens of homes evacuating as the storm closes in. and we are feeling that wind right now. but we're also looking at the potential for days and days of rain. if that system stays in the area. and that really is just a recipe for even more extreme flooding here. larry, kristen? >> yee ogio, i know you're clos to -- crazy you didn't -- had a brush fire break out. is there any sense about exactly when they expect hurricane lane to reach maui, or at least the stronger effects with heavy rains? >> reporter: you know, it still

hasn't made that westerly turn. and so, larry, the people are looking at this and saying wait a minute this thing is moving at 2 miles per hour. that's what's worrying them. as you know, these grounds get very, very saturated. that's exactly what leads to the extreme flooding. but you mentioned that wildfire. well, it just turns out that ironically all of this rain that could cause the flooding is also the rain that could also put that fire out. it's really one of these complicated situations here on maui. >> that would be one of the benefits of the rain coming to take care of the fire. gio, thanks and be safe. >> the stalling leads to more rain being dumped. let's head to sandhya patel with the latest on the storm. this storm is extremely slow moving, as you just mentioned. it is crawling which is why they've been getting dumped on. take a look at live doppler 7 right now. maximum sustained winds of 105 miles an hour. it is moving north at five miles an hour, 150 miles south of

honolulu. as you take a look at the track by 11:00 a.m. tomorrow it's a category 1, just south o it becomes a tropical storm by sunday morning, continuing to weaken. but it's that sharp west turn that it has to make before the weakening continues. rainfall, 10 to 20 inches. isolated up to 40 inches. some parts of the big island already seeing over 30 inches of rain. gusty winds, possibility of tornadoes coming, damaging waves up to 25 feet with that storm surge between two to four feet. biggest threat will continue to remain, the flash flooding and the mudslides. larry? >> thank you, sandhya. obviously it's not exactly paradise given the weather situation. people at bay area airports are still showing up to fly to hawaii. matt keller has that part of the story. >> reporter: workers were on the clock at the san jose airport without much to do. their morning daily flight to honolulu was cancelled. the 7:30 a.m. flight to maui was

delayed until 12:15 p.m. many people have already cancelled their trip due to hurricane lane. except michael west ling. he's trying to get home. he's been checking in with his wife. >> winds are picking up, rain hasn't been too much as of late. >> reporter: we witnessed the takeoff of alaska flight 867 about 9:15 this morning. alaska cancelled their morning flight to maui. hurricane lane is causing major problems on hawaii's big island. officials say three major roads were closed friday because of flash flooding. michael westling is expecting his home to get hit hard as well. >> a lot of tourists are wondering what to do, a lot of us tied everything down, put it away. with the big island getting 20 inches of rain in 24 hours and we're looking to get close to that, there's going to be quite a bit of damage, especially from flooding. >> getting back here to the bay area from hawaii is going to be touch as well. there's a flight scheduled to be

containment lines. the wildfire is 93% contained, it's burned nearly 230,000 acres. cal fire says if you plan to travel to the area, watch out for fire crews along the way. the ranch and river fires which make up the mendocino complex are 67% and 100% contained respectively. the ranch fire, the larger of the two, has now burned more than 373,000 acres. busy road to yo semisee valley is reopened today. warner road, or highway 31 reopened at 8:00 a.m. it's been closed since july 25th because of the devastating ferguson fire. that fire is now contained. meanwhile, highway 140 will close between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. this weekend so pg&e crews can do power restoration work. >> state lawmakers today criticized verizon for throttling, slowing down the internet speeds of santa clara firefighters as they were fighting the fires. verizon jeopardized the safety of the public and first

update on the breaking news. 880 southbound in hayward near winton avenue is still shut down. the northbound lanes are mufing left to right. the whole freeway was shut down for a while. still, the southbound lanes closed near winton because of a sulfuric and nitric acid spill off a tanker truck. crews are working to try to get things cleaned up and at some point open southbound to 880. we have no idea when that will occur. we'll keep you posted throughout this newscast. a police auditor has resigned. the police union questioned his ability to do the job.

for the rest of you, there's hazy sunshine. as we take a look at the temperatures, 65 in san francisco, 68 in oakland, 70s in mountain view to san jose. mrgan hill, 80s. the exploratorium camera, hazy skies, it will linger and we will continue to see the smoke. 69 in santa rosa, 77 in novato. 78 degrees in fairfield. pretty comfortable in livermore, 78 degrees. golden gate camera, clouds and smoke. smokey skies tonight warmer tomorrow afternoon and it remains below average next week. hour by hour we go, 7:00 tonight you have the marine layer right near the coast pushing over the bay at midnight. heading into tomorrow morning, it will break apart, start to see more sunshine. the problem is, because of the lingering haze it will still definitely be not completely clear in all parts of the bay area. tomorrow morning, starting you off with temperatures in the 50s, 60s, and definitely some low clouds and fog out there.

funeral services for mollie tibbetts, the yeiowa murder vicm who grew up in oakland will be on sunday. tibbetts tied of multiple sharp force injuries, the 20-year-old college student went missing while out for a jog last month. the suspeuspect in a murder led police to her body in an iowa corn field last tuesday. that man is 24-year-old cristhian rivera, an undocumented immigrant. in solano county, people who never met mollie tibbetts are experiencing acts of kindness in her name. >> we're taken to vacaville, to some of the people taking part in the mollie movement. >> mary spinetti a >> mollie could have been me,

winton avenue off ramp. the hayward fire department says they plugged a leaky container of acid coming out of there being hauled on a flat bed truck. the alameda cal fire department told us the shelter in place has ended. lyanne melendez tweeted bizarre video of hurricane force winds fueling a brush fire on maui. they're bracing for hurricane lane's impact. it's now a category 2 storm, expected to bring catastrophic flooding to hawaii. leslie brinkley sent a photo of mt. diablo in the distance, but it's shrouded with fire, smoke and smog, an unhealthy combo that triggered a spare the air alert today. longtime arizona senator, well wishers, he announced today he's stopping his treatment for an aggressive form of brain cancer.

zachary kiesch joins us with the story. >> reporter: he had a reputation for never giving up, first as a pow, and then of course for more than 30 years in washington, d.c. where he had a reputation of working across party lines to get things done. as you just mentioned off the top, his family announcing today it's time to end treatment for this aggressive form of cancer. the family of john mccain says this senator will stop treatment for his brain cancer. it's been a year since he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of gleoblastoma. >> i am not running for president to be somebody, but to do something. >> reporter: over the years mccain has become a legendary figure in washington, he's also known for being a family man. in a statement the family sayst received. mccain, 81, attend it had naval academy and was flying missions over vietnam when he was shot down, captured and tortured. when he returned home, he served five terms in the u.s. senate and ran for president twice.

touched the ground. >> how long might this take? >> caller: well, it should be -- with them having the product on scene, it shouldn't take more than a half hour. that's what i was told about ten minutes ago. so another 20 minutes and we should have the freeway back up and g. >> so northbound is open, but right now southbound is still being closed as we wrap up this work. can you talk a little bit about whether there's any concern whatsoever at this point for anyone in the area? >> caller: no concerns for anyone in the area. obviously we have police on scene, chp shutting down any approaches to the scene so that, you know, if there was any -- you know, if there was any other leaks or anything like that, people would be far enough away. so we have that, you know, in place. so, you know, protect the community. >> all right. but the traffic is certainly ruined for a friday afternoon, dn. >> caller: yeah, it's pretty bad. we apologize for that.

with the acronym, we're talking about sexually transmitted diseases here. in your book you talk about the age of the swipe right culture. how have dating apps affected modern dating? >> well, there have been a lot more casual sex, some anonymous sex. it makes it difficult when an std isn't identified to track people who have it. if you don't tell the people who you've had relations with, that they have an std, you know, then stds typically have no symptoms, they go untreated and the problem intensifies. >> that's not a conversation a lot of people want to have. >> it's -- there's so much stigma and there need not be. stds are not scary. we've got great prevention, great diagnosis and great treatment. but you have to know about it and you have to get checked regularly. >> what's the most important thing you want people to know? >> well, the most important thing is that we have great prevention and great treatment, but stds don't have symptoms and you've got to get regularly checked. if you're having regular

intercourse and you have multiple partners, you must understand these issues. >> you say charlie sheen inspired you to write this book. there's a dozen punchlines that come to mind. i'm trying to play it straight. >> as you're aware, carly came out in 2015 and said he had hiv, he and i appeared on "today" show, in that interview, he said he had intercourse with several girlfriends without a condom. that initiated a fire storm. they're criticizing me as an enabler doctor. people are not aware that a treated hiv patient is noncommunable. they don't realize prep is out there, which we gave to girlfriends, that the chance he would give it to a girlfriend with condomless sex was less than a chance a woman would get it if she went into a nightclub and had intercourse with someone with a condom. it's a whole new world. we have great treatment for people with hiv and people can't have the stigma of hiv as a

killer disease. >> let me make it clear here. you're not advocating condomless sex for somebody that has hiv, right? >> if someone with hiv is fully treated and appropriately treated, and their partner is treated with a new drug called prep, they are much, much safer than having intercourse with a condom, yes. this is a new world. hiv, there is a prevention that now makes it absolutely safe to have intercourse, condomlessly. >> that's fascinating. we can do a whole show based on that. you mentioned you really feel like everybody needs the information in this book. most important thing, aside from having the conversation with your partner? >> stop the stigmas. just like if you're an athlete, you're going to get a sprain and a strain. if you're sexually active, you're going to get stds, recognize it and stop the bs of the stigmas. it's needless. >> it obviously is something that needs to be talked about, especially with the dating apps

the freeway was shut down for hours. >> carlos saucedo is live with a breaking update for us. carlos? >> reporter: dan and kristen, we are at a secure spot just feet away from this tanker truck. i'll take a few steps here and you can see some cars just surrounding that area. we did see some chp officials also surrounding the truck moments ago. hazmat crews, again, were trying to neutralize the substance, the leak that was on the ground there. but as you can see, traffic flowing both directions now on interstate 880. traffic, as you can imagine, a major, major backup as a lot of people were trying to get home during the commute. both directions of i-880 were closed for several hours during this massive cleanup. the sulfuric and nitric acid spill was reported just after 12:30 this afternoon. a shelter in place was issued for the surrounding area here in hayward.
