let's get up and get going. >> this is abc 7 mornings. it's saturday, august 25th. good morning and thanks so much for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with the first look at accuweather forecast. lisa arjen. >> you can see the expansive marine layer that straddles us this morning all of the way into the inland valleys and we will see partial clearing, but not at the coast. we have half-moon bay and five miles in live aremore. current temperatures look like this. novato, half moon bay with 58 in san jose. air quality is certainly an issue again today. moderate air quality and we'll see sunshine, but as we get into

sunday we will see better air quality in the east bay and the south central bay and the santa clara valley. of course, the air quality is being obscured. the clean air from the smoke from the wildfires and that should get better as we get through the weekend. so temperatures in the 50s by about 1:00 in the afternoon and 3:00, 70s and 80s and we're brightening up in the east bay, but still, careful out there if you are sensitive to the bad air that we have going throughout the weekend. >> lisa, thanks. >> developing news. officials are investigating the cause of a crash of a san jose fire truck that left two people heard. it happened on southbound 101 near coyote creek. a black tesla rear ended one of the trucks. the two passengers in that vehicle were taken to the hospital. their conditions are not known. no firefighters were injured, but investigators are looking into whether the tesla's autopilot feature was on during

the time of that crash. two suspects have been arrested after a shooting that left a 16-year-old dead near a fairfield high school. one of the suspects ran into armijo high school to hide while a crowd gathered for a football game last night. an 18-year-old is in critical condition. abc 7 news reporter carlos salcedo has the details. >> reporter: a game abruptly cut short. parent, students and staff told to evacuate after shots rang out nearby. sky map 7 shows you where the shooting happened a block from the campus. they describe it as a gun battle. >> it appeared that the groups were shooting at each other. >> two teens shot. police quickly set up a perimeter looking for two suspects. one, they say, was seen running towards the school. >> any time we have this type of situation in our community it -- it causes fear for our staff and

our students. >> reporter: the school placed on lockdown as heavily armed officers search the campus for one of the shooters. people told to take shelter inside the gymnasium. police say the shooter blended in with the crowd. >> the school staff was able to identify that the person we were looking for was, in fact, inside the gym with everybody. horrific moments for students and parents as they had to walk out with their hands up before being reunited. >> because of this incident, the varsity football game also had to be canceled. police are not saying if the victims and the suspects were actual students of the high school. again, a 16-year-old was killed and an 18-year-old in critical condition. in fairfield, carlos salcedo, abc 7 news. in developing news, hurricane lane has been downgraded to a tropical storm, but the danger is not over yet for hawaii residents as rain continues to fall. some areas have already seen

more than 40 inches andor flooding is possible. several people including four tourists from los angeles have had to be rescued. on hand with honolulu to help with rescues is a crew from the menlo park fire protection district. meteorologist lisa arjen is back with more on what we can expect from the storm. >> this weakened quickly, but boy, the effects of the rainfall and the flooding rainfall and the potential mud slides far reaching as we take a look at the current conditions right now you can see that it did make that left-hand turn so that's why it rapidly weakened. it now is a tropical storm with winds of 65 miles an hour moving to the north-northwest at 3 so it's barely moving. as we continue to watch its trek throughout the day today, by tonight it will be with winds of 40 miles an hour and the tropical storm warnings are for all of the islands and the hurricane watches have been dropped and we're looking at the

wettest august ever on hilo with 42 inches of rain so far. oahu will see 3 to 5 inches of rainfall and maui, 8 to 12 inches and the possibility of flash flooding and mountain runoffs. this system is not done yet because the heavy rain. the wind not much of an impact anymore, but the flooding rain as we see this move to molokini and also haiakala and we'll see big problems there. chris? >> thank you. although lane has weakened the thousands remain for thousands on hawaii's big island which has seen epic amounts of rainfall as lisa mentioned. abc 7 story. >> under water turning small rivers into raging torrents. here's what the normally calm

rainbow looked like on friday. the storm has dumped more than 30 inches of rain. >> when you hear 30 inches of rain, it sounds biblical. >> hawaii representative chris todd says the ground has absorbed some of the epic rainfall, but not all of it. he's urging people to be careful. >> if the ground continues to saturate and it doesn't get absorbed as well i can see those levels rise a little bit and that's when you see problems like we have been seeing where some of the rivers have i don't know flown and causes some property damage. >> reporter: earlier that morning to tourists on waikiki, but most chose to stay in the water. honolulu's mayor is urging people to stay vigilant. we will still have rain events. we're asking residents please don't open manhole covers into the sueewers and drain the wate into the sewer system. >> 50 mile-an-hour wind gusts spread several wildfires

scorching 2,000 acres. fire officials say seven homes were damaged or destroyed prompting evacuations. >> two of those fires are out. the third is close to being contined. the mayor of mauvy said they were possibly started by downed power lines. lane has weakened but its impact can be felt into next cornell barnard abc 7 news. >> the billionaire the decision comes at the urging of investors and the company board. the stock price has been on a roller coaster since early august. that's when the ceo tweeted that he was considering taking the company private. you can read the full letter to hayward after a chemical spill forced interstate 880 shut down for several hours yesterday and what looked like orange smoke

know, people have been in this area doing, committing violent crimes. julia's daughter stables her horse at the westwind community barn. >> we've always felt safe here. >> so did neighbor, they tied up the 83-year-old home owner and ransacked the home. the woman's gardener heard the cries for help and called 911. >> reporter: police ask anyone with information to come forward. the victim did describe the robbers to deputies as three men, two wearing masks and one hispanic man in his 20s. >> that must have been so frightening for her. i can't imagine having three men come in and, you know, tie me up. >> neighbors were too shaken to go on camera, but say the elderly woman is petite, likely less than 100 pounds in weight. her husband was not home at the time of the break-in. medics treated her injuries on scene. she's said to be bruised from

the assault. in los altos, katie utehs, abc 7 news. an e evacuation order for a berkeley neighborhood is it still in place as crews were able to remove one of the six redwoods deemed unsafe. seven businesses and three homes at the corner of university and mcgee avenue were, vak waited. work will start up again at 8:00 this morning. >> after being closed for two months for construction subway service resumes at muni's twin peaks tunnel and the tunnel provides service between castro and westportal station. the project has not been without fault. a worker died on the job. >> the mayor cited the accident in a scathing letter questioning muni's leadership earlier this week. >> bart is reminding passengers trains will not be running between west oakland and lake merritt. to get to san francisco from the east bay you'll have to ride the

is gathering at his arizona home as he stops brain cancer treatment. a statement from his family read the progress of disease and the inexorable advanced of age render their verdict with his usual strength of will. he has now chosen to discontinue medical treatment. mccain has been spending his final months reflecting including in his recent autobiography. >> before i leave i'd like to see our politics begin to return to the purposes and practices that distinguish our history from the history of other nations. ? lawmakers of both parties been sending their thoughts and prayers. nancy pelosi tweeted in part, a national freshtreasure. our hearts are with his family. mollie tibbetts.

in solano county, people who never met mollie are experiencing acts of kindness in her name. abc 7 news anchor eric thomas takes us to vacaville and introduces us to some of the people taking part in the mollie movement. mary spineti is a runner and it's something she has in common with mollie tibbetts and it has drawn her closer to the young college student. >> mollie could have been me or anybody and i just felt a connection with mollie. she started following the case when mollie was missing. every day i'd see and wake up and see if mollie was found and tuesday when her body was found i woke up that morning and just cried. >> reporter: but instead of letting her grief turn paralysis, mary joined an online group started by two of tibbetts' friends in iowa. they call it the mollie movement. membe membs these random acts of ice cream.

hawaii and georgia right here on abc 7 at 12:30. it follows the international final between japan and asia-pacific at 9:30 this morning. >> now your accuweather forecast with lisa argen. >> can we break this pattern? we have been in a pattern where we've seen temperatures below average. yesterday, the only 80s we had were in morgan hill and gill roy. here's live doppler 7. we go up to the north and this is the culprit. another area of low pressure tht will be allowing for the low clouds and fog to continue to visit us each and every day, although today it will burn back quicker. the winds are calm and the marine layer at 1600 feet and not as deep as it was yesterday and as we look outside here from the exploratorium camera, numbers are in the 50s and it's 57 in morgan hill and in the coast in the mid-50s. so we're looking at a slightly warmer afternoon and this

morning, though, subtle changes with the fog burning off quicker and 55 by the delta. it's clear therels clear in concord, everywhere else holding on to the cloud cover and 58 in livermore. we're cooler this morning, two to four degrees cooler and that's due to some of the cloud cover and we're looking at that clearing and perhaps giving us more sunshine and we're looking at the poor air quality again today. midwestly cloudy this morning and warmer throughout the afternoon and mainly in our east bay valleys, but we will hang on to the clouds at the shoreline and we're looking at temperatures remaining below average into next week and of course, we're looking at the labor dai holiday into next week, as well so not looking warm at this point. 7:00 this morning see the fog into the east bay, the north bay and it clears just to the shoreline today. we'll take it through tonight and then into early tomorrow where once again it comes back and hangs out at the coast. so we'll be looking at partial

clearing around stenson, ocean beach and temperatures in the 60s there. in the south bay, numbers below average. average high for this time of year in san jose should be 82 degrees. we'll be shy of that in the 60s throughout the 10:00 hour. upper 70s should do it by the afternoon. so we're certainly a few degrees below average, but in our inland, east bay, temperatures coming up a few degrees into the low 80s, but once again, you'll notice those hazy conditions and the numbers drop off and as we enf theekt doesn't look like we'll shake this pattern up in the near future. look for 75 in redwood city, and partly cloudy, san francisco and 67 and in the north bay, 80 in santa rosa and 74 for you. 82 in pleasanton. if you're headed into the city, it will be in the low 60s for the jeengiants game.

three miles. livermore is at five miles and we're looking at an advisory throughout the bay area for the poor air quality and moderate air quality throughout the day today. i think we'll see better air quality tomorrow on sunday, but in terms of the warmth it looks like another cool day out there and 50s to start out and partly cloudy this afternoon. we could see 80s around concord and otherwise lots of 70s around the bay and partial clearing along the coast and the sun setting at 7:49. it looks like the cooling trend and the cool streak stays with us for your saturday and the last week of august coming up, chris? >> lisa, thanks. >> san jose's independent police auditor has resigned as post after a short and tumultuous tenure this comes after a series of missteps by city leaders as well as the police union, but now community groups are raising concerns. >> facing growing pressure to

jose's independent police auditor, he's calling it quits after one year on the job. zisser says i am enormously grateful to community leaders and advocates for their consistent and robust support. unfortunately, the extraordinary attacks on my work have become a distraction from important goals of reform and expanded oversight of the police and community groups. it's important for the city to move forward. >> i remain committed to the expansion of the independent police auditor's authority and scope. as i have said in the past, i expect we will push forward in the weeks ahe expansion of that authority regardless of who is in the seat of the ipa. >> zisser came under attack by the police union when his office's annual audit used percentages instead of wrong numbers for use of force incidents. he failed to warn them about a man who threatened to shoot an officer while making a police

complaint. >> we need a person with integrity that's not biassed in that office. we're not going to hand over the keys to the car that gives more oversight when it continues to crash that car on every turn. >> zisser says he's proud of the trust he's built with local community groups and some are concerned about the actual independence of the ipa and whether the city is committed to civilian oversight. >> it's san jose's loss that the small mindedness of the city forced a very capable leader out of a position where he could have done great things for san jose. >> assistant ipa shevan murray will head the office in the interim until a replacement is named. >> this marks the first resignation by the ipa since the position was created in san jose back in 1993. more than a dozen members of congress from northern california have asked the federal trade commission to investigate verizon's throttling of internet speeds that impacted

firefighters mendocino complex fires. they want to know whether verizon violated any rules when they slowed the data speeds of santa clara firefighters who were on the front lines of the fires. yesterday the company apologized and lifted all caps. state lawmakers say they could introduce legislation to outlaw the practice. > we may need to introduce legislation, and i am considering introducing data tg of any first responder never happens again. >> the internet was unusable on the front lines of the destructive wildfires, jeopardizing the lives of the public and first responders. verizon sent an e-mail us to last night, as of yesterday, we removed all speed cap retreks for first responders on the west coast and in hawaii to support current fire fighting and hurricane lane efforts. furthermore in the event of another disaster, verizon will lift restrictions on public safety customers providing full network access. time now is 5:33. the organizers of burning mane

lawsuit over continued stops of vehicles heading to the event. it happens on sunday in nevada's black rock desert and burning man lawyers say many of the stops are attempts to intimidate and harass festival goers. the bureau of indiana, fairs say the stops are part of an effort to crack down on a nationwide opioid epidemic on tribal land and the timing is just a coincidence. >> a cervical vertebrae found at monteiro state beach belonged to a monteiro man. richard moss was last seen last year. it's believed he was driving through the tunnels on highway 1. there was an exhaustive search at the time. vehicle parts belonging to his vehicle were found, but he had simply vanished. six months ago, a citizen found bones. the coroner now confirms they belong to moss. happening today, medical services will expand san franc

mission district. sutter health cpmc will open a seven-floor 120-bed campus at caesar chavez and valencia replacing st. luke's hospital. the upgraded facility include new private maternity rooms with bathtubs and high-tech innovations throughout the building. the room is four times the size which means the hospital can handle more patients. also happening today, oakland residents can dispose of unwanted items and no cost. today is the first of three bulky block parties and part of an effort to educate residents about the city's bulky waste pickup service that allows people to schedule a free curb side pickup. the disposal parties are only open to oakland residents it will be open on edgewater drive in east oakland. a team of young scientists in the south bay believe they have a solution to keep hard to recye plastics from ending up in landfills. the city of san jose and a major

recycler is betting on them. david louie has the story. >> the green waste recycling center handles waste as for away as santa rosa and sacramento. film plastics including plastic bags. >> as soon as it's covered in food waste or other what we call putresable waste and that segment of the ilifm blastec has always gone to landfill. >> reporter: the expectations are high these scientists will change that. bioselection is a start-up that has developed a process that turns polyethylene to chemicals. it's sold to companies that use them that make a wide range of products from padded jackets to perfume. there was more plastic entering the waste stream. >> a lot of packagers are moving away from glass and cardboard and moving to plastics which is much cheaper. so we're actually seeing an increase in polyethylene.

>> the city of san jose will partner with bioselection investing $240,000 for a one-year pilot project. the two scientists who co-founded bioselection are both 24 who started working on the concept in high school students in canada. jenny yao is the chief technology officer while miranda wang is the ceo. the process helps decide what to do with certain plastics and create a new source of chemicals that otherwise require petroleum to make. bioselection plans to locate labs on site, in a mobile facility no larger than two parking spaces. with the partnership with the city of san jose and green waste, the team here at bioselection believes they'll be in full-scale production by next spring. in menlo park, david louie, abc 7 news. >> a new ferry provider could soon take passengers between angel island and tiburon. the blue and gold fleet submitted a bid to the state yesterday. the operator of the angel island

tiburon ferry ended its long-time service to the company. the company pulled out of competitive bidding to provide ferry service saying a 20-year contract request places an unfair financial burden on their family business. governor brown has signed a bill to officially recognize the lunar new year. millions celebrate it every year and this is video from an, vent in san francisco. the bill was written by a group of lawmakers including two assemblymen from san francisco. the bill requires the governor to honor it each year and learn about it in schools. >> an el cerrito museum dedicated to amusement park in the past is closing after ten years. we're taking you behind the scenes before it disappears. we'

it's a tropical storm with winds of 65 mills an hour. they're all tropical storm warnings and flooding concerns in hilo where they've had 43 inches of rain and three days of record rainfall and still looking at honolulu getting anywhere from three to five additional inches of rain also on maui and hilo is the place where we're looking at perhaps the worst weather and still the possibility of some tornadoes exist. if you look at the big island where all of the colors are, that's where we're getting the heaviest rain. maui is next and then oahu and the threat remains for very heavy rain and the possibility of mudslides and flash flooding. 59 in oakland and 61 in hayward and 57 in napa and as we look out toward san rafael and nothing, but clouds there and we will see them clear and this morning with the cloudy skies, it's cool, by the afternoon, warmer inland where we're below

average into next week and part of the reason why is the low cloud and fog deck that will stay with us anywhere from 1,000 feet deep to sometimes less, but as we go through the afternoon we'll get some sun, ocean beach and even along the peninsula there, san mateo county beaches, but it will be cool and the fog comes back into your sunday morning. once again, the air quality is better for you on sunday. it's one of the warmer spots is in the mid-80s and as we go through the next couple of days another cooling trend. the numbers dropping off into tuesday and then by wednesday we can just manage about 80 degrees. in the south bay today, 79 in santa clara and look for 70 san mateo and on the coast we're cool. haezy sun downtown at 67 and up in sonoma, 77 degrees and the

low 70s with san leandro, better air quality and slightly warmer here and 83 in liver more and overnight tonight once again, you have the clouds waking up to the gray conditions and some hazy sunday afternoon sun. mid-80s inland and upper 70s at the coast and download the accuweather app to stay up-to-date hour by hour and looking at the improving air quality should be the best day and we're getting there today and tomorrow, but still certainly below average for most of us. >> on a personal note i suffer from asthma, as you know, and this air quality has been really tough for me and i know for those folks who also are asthmatic relief can't come soon enough. >> yeah. you don't even want to go outside. >> lisa, thank you. history is being read for fans of san francisco's last amusement park. play land at the beach closed on labor day in 1972. now a museum dedicated to preserving some of the park's memorabilia is also closing this labor day. abc 7 news anchor crystal zee

has one final look at the museum before it disappears. >> they come back to life, just listen. >> so much fun. it's much better than the computer games. >> reporter: the museum opened ten years ago kind of by chance. the person behind it was richard tuck. he collected amusement memorabilia and stored it inside this building in el cerrito. people heard about it and something magical started to happen. >> people started showing up at our front door and they would bring mementos and things they had at home and said can we donate it to you. >> it is a mishmash of amusement collectibles. there is santa's vegas. >> this is las vegas meets the north pole. a miniature serb us with hundred of thousands of hand carved pieces and 30 pinball machines.

>> it is so much fun to watch a 5-year-old next to a 65-year-old and they're both acting like a 5-year-old. the san francisco amusement park that closed in 1972 to make way for condos. >> one of my favorite things here would have to be laughing sal. sal was a mascot at play land. a lot of people remember kind of romantic laugh. it wasn't supposed to cause nightmares. i'm sure it did. >> since news got out of the museum's pending closure, fans have come to reminisce. >> it was a real special day and a real special treat to go over to play land at the beach. >> just like the original amusement park, play not not at the beach willlo on labor day to make way for condos. it was too expensive to move so all of the items will go up for auction in september. >> they're going to get scattered again. it's sad that they'll be going out in the public eye, but great that they'll be preserved.
