good morning, bay area. let's get up and get going. >> this is abc 7 mornings. it's saturday, august 25th good morning and thanks so much for being with us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with the first look at the accuweather forecast. here's meteorologist lisa argen tracking live doppler radar. >> good morning, everyone. we have the expansive marine layer and behind me you're looking at walnut creek where we're trying to get sunshine and we will. the air quality will improve it's 59 in san jose and the top pic, this is a beautiful picture and boy, awfully cloudy, i know. 55 in fairfield with upper 50s in concord and livermore. the air quality alert from the smoke from the wildfires continues and improves more so tomorrow and i think you will notice a difference today. no delays at sfo and with temperatures climbing through

the 60s and 70s by noon time, you'll notice the sun and by the afternoon we're in the low 80s around pleasanton and walnut creek and sun setting at 7:49 and back with more low clouds and fog and i'll let you know if we'll warm up any in the last week of august with the long holiday weekend coming up next weekend. chris? >> developing news, officials are investigating the cause of a crash involving a san jose fire truck that left two people hurt. that happened at 1:00 on southbound highway 101 near coyote creek. firefighters were responding to an accident when a black teslaa. the two passengers were taken to the hospital and their conditions are not known. no firefighters were injured. investigators are looking into whether the tesla's autopilot feature was on during the time of that crash. two suspects have been arrested after a shooting that left a 16-year-old dead near a fairfield high school. one of the suspects ran into armijo high school to hide while

a crowd gathered for the football game last night and a 16-year-old is in critical condition. >> a football game at armijo high abruptly cut short. students, staff and parents told to evacuate after shots raj out nearby. skymap 7 shows you where the shooting happened on washington and bell a block from the campus. police describe the shooting as a gun battle. >> we do know that there were multiple shooters and it appears that the groups were shooting at each other. >> two teens shot. police quickly set up a perimeter looking for two suspects, one they say, was seen running towards the school. >> any time that we have this type of a situation in our community, it -- it causes fear for our staff and our students. >> the school placed on lockdown as heavily armed officers searched the campus for one of the shooters. people told to take shelter inside the gymnasium, police say the shooter blended in with the

crowd. >> the school staff was able to identify that the person we were actually looking for was in fact in the gym with everybody. >> the suspect arrested without incident. horrific moments for students and parents as they had to walk out with their hands up before being reunited. >> the varsity football game also had to be canceled. police are not saying if the victims and the suspects were actual students of the high school. again, a 16--year-old was killed and an 18-year-old in critical condition. in fairfield, carlos salcedo,sac abc 7 news. in developing news, hurricane lane, rain continues to fall. some areas have already seen more than 40 inches and more flooding is possible. several people including four tourists from los angeles have had to be rescued. on hand in honolulu to help with any rescues is a crew from the menlo park fire protection

district. we received new pictures from their meetings with honolulu firefighters. meteorologist lisa argen is back with what we can expect. >> good morning, everyone. this has been downgraded to a tropical storm, but still several days of rainfall is anticipated with this, skirting the hawaiian island chain. so as i put this into motion, we get the current conditions right now with winds of about 60 meils an hour just crawling along three, and you'll notice by tomorrow it continues on its westward track, that left-hand turn, but boy, the wet part of the storm just drenching hilo with record amounts of rain. so that island really getting the worst of it with over 44.8 inches of rainfall. so that's an all-time record and the wettest august ever, the three-day rainfall totals there and oahu could see three to five inches and maui could see half a foot. so the flash flooding continues and we're looking at the possibility of some mud slides

as well. so the big island certainly getting the worst of it, but still at least another day and a half of rain. the wind threat is over and it's more likely now that we see flooding and the torrential rains continuing, chris? >> lisa, thanks. the danger remains for thousands on hawaii's big island which has seen epic amounts of rainfall and abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard has the update. >> tropical storm lane leaving its mark on the big island of hawaii. flooding has left many areas under water turning small rivers into raging torrents. here's what the normally calm rainbow falls looked like on friday. it has dumped more than 30 inches of rain. >> when you hear 30 inches of rain that sounds -- sounds biblical. >> hawaii representative chris todd says the ground has absorbed some of the epic rainfall, but not all of it. >> it is picking up right now. >> he's urging people to be careful. >> the ground continues to

saturate and it doesn't get absorbed as well, you can see the levels rise a little bit and that's when you see problems like what we have been seeing that some of the rivers have overflown. >> earlier that morning to tourists on waikiki, but most chose to stay in the water. honolulu's mayor is urging people to stay vigilant. >> we will still have rain events and have localized flooding and we're asking residents please don't open manhole covers and drain the water into the sewer system. this is a huge, huge, huge fire. on maui, 50 mile-an-hour wind gusts spread several wildfires scorching 2,000 acres. fire officials say seven homes were damaged or destroyed, prompting evacuations. >> two of those fires are out and the third is close to being contained. the mayor of maui says they were possibly started by downed power lines. lane has weakened, but its impact can be felt well into next week with more rain. cornell barnard, abc 7 news.

tesla's ceo elon musk has announced the elect riblg car company will stay public. the billionaire says the decisions comes at the urging of investors and the company board. the future of the company and the stock price has been on a roller coaster since early august. that's when the ceo tweeted that he was considering taking the company private. you can view the letter on abc 7.com. a chemical spill forced interstate will 880 to be shut dwn for several hours yesterday and what looked like orange smoke could be seen in the air at 12:30 and take a look fm sky map 7, as crews rushed to mop up the hazardous acid spilling from leaking containers on a truck. drivers were stuck. >> i've been in traffic for, like, four hours roughly. it's horrible. it is horrible. >> a shelter in place was ordered and that included

homeowner and ransacked the home. the woman's gardener heard the woman's call for help and called 911. >> santa clara county's sheriff's investigates asks anyone with information to come forward. the victim did describe the robbers to deputies as three men, two wearing masks and one hispanic man in his 20s. >> that must have been so frightening for her. i can't imagine having three men come in and, you know, tie me up. >> neighbors were too shaken to be on camera, but say the elderly woman is petite, likely less than 100 pounds in weight. her husband was not home at the time of the break-in. medics treated injuries on scene and she's said to be bruised from the assault. in los altos hills, katie utehs, abc 7 news. an evacuation order for a berkeley neighborhood is still in place as crews work to remove trees in danger of falling. crews were able to remove one of the six redwoods deemed unsafe. seven businesses and three homes at the corner of university and

with lisa argen. >> good morning to you. you've been getting used to this weather, 60s and 70s and today we'll change it up just a little bit and here's live doppler 7 where we do have cloud cover around the bay and a pretty great start for you with visibility in petaluma and a mile up in santa rosa and three miles in livermore and pictures for you with no delays at sfo and 60, oakland and upper 50s, san jose and morgan hill and 55 and look at the golden gate bridge. we will get some clearing today so the fog is a little bit less dense and it will clear sooner with the help of some west-southwest winds. 57 by the delta, and 54 in santa rosa, up ander 50s in concord and livermore and we still have the advisory from the unhealthful air and the west-southwest wind will be pushing that into the sacramento valley and you will notice an improvement today and more tomorrow. cloudy to start and warmer in our inland valleys and it will

calling it quits after less than one year on the job. in a statement zisser said i am enormously grateful to community leaders and advocates for their consistent and robust support. unfortunately, the extraordinary personal attacks on my office and my work have become a distraction from the important goals of reform and expanded oversight of the police sought by the public and community groups. >> san jose mayor sam ricardo says it's important for the city to move forward. >> i remain committed to the expansion of the police auditor's authority and scope. as i said in the past i expect we're going to push forward in the weeks ahead with an expansion of that authority regardless of who is in the seat of the ipa. >> zisser came under attack by the police union when his office's annual audit used percentages instead of raw numbers for use of force incidents. he failed to warn the officers about a man threatening to shoot

officers with a complaint. >> we need a person with integrity who is not biassed in that office. we're not going to hand over the keys to the car that gives more oversight when it continues to crash that car on every turn. >> zisser says he's proud of the trust he built with local community groups. some are concerned about the actual independence of the ipa and whether the city is truly committed to civilian oversight. it's san jose's loss that the small mindedness of this city forced a very capable leader out of a position where he could have done great things for san jose. >> assistant ipa shevan will head the office until an interim is named. >> sense the position was created in san joss ney 1993. time now is 8:32. the closure of orchard supply hardware has created a big problem for a beloved san jose tradition. christmas in the park has counted on orchard to help

supply hundreds of trees that filled plaza de cesar chavez every year. it was losing the major sponsor. orchard had already committed to providing $25,000 and typically provided the plastic fencing for the park. officials are scrambling to find new funding. >> we rely on sponsorship to make up most of our cost of the event to keep it free because we are a free event and we don't charge the community to visit santa claus or to walk around. >> christmas in the park has tried reaching out to lowe's, the owner of orchard supply hardware and said they have yet to hear back from corporate. a go fund me page has been created by suppotoy,edical ssn . sutter health cpmc will open a seven-floor 120-bed campus at cesar chaff sxves and valencia.

it will have bathtub and high-tech innovations. it is four times the size and it can handle more patients. >> oakland residents can legally dispose of large, unwanted items at no cost. today is the first of three bulky block parties and part of an effort to educate resident about the bulky waste pickup service that allows people to schedule a free curbside pick up. the disposal parties will be only open to oakland residents and in east oakland. eye team of young scientists believe they have a solution to keep hard to recycle plastics from ending up in landfills. the city of san jose and a major recycler are betting on them. abc 7 reporter david louie has the story. >> the green waste recycling center in san jose handles waste from as far away as santa rosa and sacramento. the waste that poses the biggest challenge is what you see here. film plastics, including plastic

bags. >> as soon as it's covered in food waste or other what we call putresable waste, there isn't a market for those materials and the segment of that has always gone to landfill. >> expectations are high that the scientists at bioselection will change that. bioselection is a start-up that has developed a process that turns polyethylene to chemicals. they use them to make a wide range of products, from padded jackets to autopart to perfume. there is more plastic entering into the waste stream. a lot of packagers are moving away from gls to. >> the city of san jose will invest in partner selection for a one-year pilot project. the two scientists who co-founded bioselection are both 24 and who started working on the concept while in high school in canada. miranda wang is the ceo.

the process they develo not only helps to solve what to do with certain plastic, but also create a new source of chemicals that otherwise require petroleum to make. bioselection plans to locate labs on site that will allow the chemical process to be done at recycling centers in a mobile facility no larger than two parking spaces. >> with the partnership with the city of san jose and green waste, the team here at bioselection believes they'll be in full-scale production by next spring. >> in menlo park, david louie, abc 7 news. a new ferry provider could soon take passengers between angel island and tiburon. the marin independent journal said it submitted a bid to the state yesterday. the operator of the tiburon ferry ended its long-time service to the island. the company pulled out of competitive bidding saying a 20-year contract request places an unfair financial burden on their family business. still to come, an el cerrito

santa rosa and upper 50s for you in concord. livermore has had fog and we're looking at a slightly warmer day today, inland. the air quality slowly improves over the weekend. emoriville, mostly cloudy and mainly in the east bay valley and say pleasanton and walnut creek and otherwise, very little change as we go through the next several days and temperatures will remain below average. so if you like this current weather pattern you're in luck. overnight lows tonight will be in the 50s with the low clouds and fog just making it over the bay again. somewhat hazy, but as we look at the south bay today, the average high should be about 82 for you in san jose. shy of that and upper 70s for the middle of the afternoon. so we're still pretty gray down around san jose and santa clara. it will take some time to clear out and with those hazy afternoon skies i think you will notice somewhat of an improvement during the later

afternoon hours in the east bay. the temperatures will come up and you will see the smoke drift more so into the sacramento valley and we have west, southwesterly winds today pushing it away and that's what pushed it onshore, as well and some of you still looking at the poor air quality and that should continue to improve. 105, 63 degrees with breezy wins at at&t park and a little cool for you and temperatures will be in the mid-70s and also on the peninsula, san mateo, 70 and 71 near napa. ukiah will see 90 degrees. the accuweather seven-day forecast looking at temperatures coming up just a bit in the inland valleys. k you can download the app and we're looking at the temperature still a little bit below average and we round out august staying on the cool side which is good for some of you, but as we look

the person behind it was richard tuck. he collected amusement this building in el cerrito. people heard about it and then something magical started to happen. >> people literally started showing up at our front door and started to bring mementos they had at home and they said can we donate it to you and so we became a museum. >> the museum say mishmash of museum collectibles and there is a santa's village. >> this is las vegas meets the north pole. a miniature circus with hundreds of thousands of hand carved pieces and about 30 pinball machines. >> it is so much fun to find a 5-year-old playing next to a 65 groe -year-old and they're both acting like a 5-year-old. the san francisco amusement park that closed in way for condos. >> one of my favorite things here has to be laughing sal. sal was a mascot at playland. r.

here are the wenning numbers from last night's $118 million mega millions drawing. 1, 6, 13, 18, 49, the mega number 8. nobody picked all six so tuesday night's jackpot goes up to $134 million. the fish made popular by the movie finding nemo is in a bit of trouble, but now an australian biologist is trying to help scientists say the number of clown fish in the wild has dwindled because of climate change and overfishing.

that overfishing stems from the demand for clown fish as pets so an australian biologist has begun a program to breed clown fish to boost their numbers around the great barrier reef. happening today, if you're a thrill seeker who loves to test your limits head over to six flags discovery park. it has teamed up for the coaster challenge. riders choose a 5k, 10k or 15k and then have to raise money for the level selected and that's the distance where you'll have to ride the coasters on the park. the park opens for those taking part in that fun event. let's get a final weather check now with meteorologist lisa argen. >> it could be a hot place up in vallejo and we are looking at temperatures this morning on the cool side. here's the fog pattern and the way it will play out. you can see, it will clear throughout the day today and partial clearing at the coast and then it comes back tonight and we'll be looking at a similar pattern and the wildfire
