family announced he had decided to stop treatment for brain cancer. arizona state troopers escorted his body from his home to phoenix. >> his service to his country began in the late 1950s. in 1967 his navy plane was shot down during the vietnam war. he was severely injured and spent more than five years as a prisoner of war. mccain was elected to the house of representatives in 1982 and the senate in 1986. he ran for president twice. >> many are honoring the life of john mccain, including right here in the bay area. >> abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo is live with local reaction. orr: a south bay moth says senator john mccain helped her through the loss of her 31-year-old son, a man who was killed in 9/11. alice hoagland's friend wrote the senator in 2001, not knowing it would lead to one of the most meaningful moments of her life. alice hoagland was living some of the darkest days of her life

when senator john mccain and his wife made a special trip to berkeley to speak at the dedication. her son was on board flight 93of on september 11th. he and others were believed to have thwarted the plans to fly the plane into washington, d.c. >> he touched my heart. he said, i didn't know mark but -- >> i may very well owe my life to mark and the others who summoned the enormous courage and love necessary to deny those depra depraved, hateful men their terrible triumph. such a debt you incur for life. >> reporter: alice says mccain brought a sense of calm when there were so many questions about her son's death. in life she says her son respected the republican politician. during a campaign stop in 2000, bingham went out of his way to meet mccain. their interaction captured in this picture. >> senator mccain was trying to

look tall. it was hard to do next to a guy who's 6'4". they were grinning. >> reporter: a happy memory. alice says mccain's words action ands those years ago brought the admiration her son had for the senator full circle. >> he was at the capitol building on that awful afternoon. so i think that's why he told us all that he had a personal debt to mark and the others because he may very well have saved my life, he said. >> reporter: alice tells me she only wishes she said more. alice never got around to writing senator mccain about his impact on her life, now she has plans to write cindy. mccain's daughter megan now one of the hosts of "the view" released a heartfelt statement on her father's passing writing in part, he was a great fire who burned bright and we lived in his light and warmth for so very

to the family of senator john mccain. arizona's governor also ordered ul flags in that state to be flown at half staff. >> you can remember senator john mccain on the abc 7 news facebook page. share our posts and write your own tributes. developing news in oakland. police say a man was stabbed on a bart train at the macarthur station. police say it is a minor wound to the hand. suspect is at large. the macarthur station was shut down for a time, it's now open. it's the same station where 18-year-old nia wilson was stabbed to death last month. police say that appeared to be a random attack on the woman and her sister, who is recovering from injuries. john lee powell could face the death penalty if convicted. an east bay woman said she escaped from a rideshare when she felt unsafe when the driver began to take her in the opposite direction miles away from her destination.

>> it became a fight or flight situation. >> reporter: that's how britney sun quist describes the lyft ride she took friday morning. >> i needed to quickly escape. >> reporter: the 27-year-old ordered the lyft from a bar at 2:04 a.m. the app said she should have arrived in east oakland 14 minutes later. >> drifter veered off the destination that he was given, which was my home. and was driving me deeper into an isolated and desolate area of the oakland hills that i'm unfamiliar with. >> reporter: britney says she end up here in the area of montclair park, 3 1/2 miles from her home. she said she was able to escape from the lyft and run into the woods. unsure of where she was, britney ordered another lyft at 2:30 a.m. to take her home. >> you don't know how you're going to react until these situations happen to you. >> reporter: she filed a police report with oakland p.d. and has been in touch with lyft, who

says in part, we've reached out to the passenger to extend our full support and the driver has been permanently banned from the lyft platform. amanda wood is britney's roommate and is a lyft driver. >> as a female driver there's been times where i've started to question, am i safe? my comfortable with this passenger? >> reporter: to improve rideshare safety the women started a petition asking lyft and uber the option of requesting a female driver. abc 7 ran a story about another rideshare company called safe ever, offering the choice of a female driver, and gives drivers more say about who they pick up. kate larsen, abc 7 news. there are no more warnings in place for hawaii as tropical storm lane moves away from the state. lane had been a category 5 hurricane but weakened as it neared the islands. while this was no direct hit, there is widespread flooding on the big island. at least 21 structures and

27 vehicles dam wiret broke yesterday. it was fueled by dry brush and strong winds from hurricane lane. at least 2,000 acres have burned and the fire is 80% contained. over 100 homes were evacuated at one point, one person was hurt. new at 11:00, one man dead and a driver is under arrest after a contract are in san francisco's potrero hill neighborhood. a car hit a motorcycle near 23ed and arkansas. the man on the motorcycle died. the driver of the car that hit him took off, however, officers arrested the expect later. we know a stockton man died in a crash near the san mateo bridge. the accident backed up traffic in the eastbound direction this afternoon all the way across the bridge into foster city. the collision between a big rig and a box truck happened just after 2:00 this afternoon near the industrial boulevard exit bed twoanes of traffic until about 6:00 p.m. tesla's auto pilot feature

is again being looked at after reserve after a car slammed into a fire truck in the south bay at about 1:00 a.m. on southbound highway 101 near coyote creek in san jose. investigators say the fire truck was responding to another crash and was just about to park on the freeway. that is when the tesla crashed into it. two people inside the vehicle went to the hospital. no firefighters were hurt. the san jose fire department made this plea -- >> people need to be following the law. not distracted. making sure they're following the appropriate speed, paying attention to the surroundings. >> chp is looking into whether or not the autopilot feature made a contribution to the crash. a statement saying, tesla has not received any data from the car but we are working to establish the facts of the incident. a high school coach accused of being in a relationship with a student. the search in stockton after authorities say the man and the teenager ran away together.

school the suspect coached at. they're believed to be in a truck similar to the one here. a 16-year-old killed and another teen hurt in a shooting that put a fairfield high school on lockdown. police identified 16-year-old august mature willis of fairfield -- or ahmar willis of fairfield. the shooting happened a block from armeo high school sending people at a football game running for safety. cornell bernard has the story. >> it was terrifying. >> reporter: karen duff was working at the stadium concession stand at armeo high school when chaos unfolded. >> people just started running into the concession stand saying that the school was, is apler.orr: ren's son tand then it was like three po. >> reporter: those pops were gunfire coming from nearby

washington street and bell avenue. police called it a gun battle. >> we do know there was multiple shooters, it appeared the groups were shooting at each other. >> reporter: this is how close it was to the high school, a block away from campus, a bullet ripping through the radiator of this minivan. a 16-year-old was killed, an 18-year-old wounded. the football stadium was evacuated. hundreds of spectators told to take shelter in the gym. police say it's the same place where one of the suspects ran and hid, blending in with the crowd. >> i was scared to death for my son. i didn't know where he was. i just knew they were in the gym. then we heard one of the gunmen might be in the gym and to think your own child is in there -- you never think it's going to happen to you. >> reporter: the jv team took cover in the locker room.isaiah the shoes he had to >> they sa t dude might be in the gym, they didn't know. >> reporter: the suspect hiding in the gym was arrested, a

specced suspect found at a house nearby. the school district doesn't know if the shooting victims or suspects were students here. monday morning counselors will be available to talk to students about the incident. volunteers joined the search for a missing palo alto woman more than a week after she vanished. abc 7 news was on university avenue in east palo alto as searchers gathered. that is where 66-year-old wymetha kaboga miller was last seen driving toward the dumbarton bridge on august 17th. miller's son say she mother recently had back surgery and she's been taking painkillers that might impair her judgment. >> we don't know her state of mind. i don't believe she was upset but i know she didn't like staying at home, being on bed rest, in pain and all those things. >> she's described as 5'1", 120 pounds. if you see her or her 2002

mercedes-benz, palo alto police urge you to call them. a key link open following two months of major construction. abc 7 news was at the west portal muni station where light rail trains were entering and exiting the twin peaks tunnel. muni replaced the rail and key systems inside the tunnel. shuttle buses were used to get riders around the closure. today san francisco delivered by opening new restrooms insigh golden gate park. abc 7 news was at the boat playground at 45th avenue and lincoln way. generations of children have treasured this urban oasis but it lacked restrooms until today. a group of sunset district neighbors led the change.eaoryo? >> sunny, pretty mild. drew tuma has details on if it's going to last. >> we've been in this pattern where we have thacl with the

afternoon flightful. temperatures actually dip below average for this time of the year and that will continue the second half of the weekend. we have that pattern again of that coastal cloud cover beginning to move back in and around the bay. we get an update on what is tropical storm lane. look at this storm system. it is just falling apart. barely recognizable on our radar and satellte loop. still it is having wind observations of at least 50 miles an hour moving to the west. it's picking up speed at 9 miles an hour, about 200 miles to the south and west of honolulu. the track will continue to take it into cooler ocean waters which will weaken the storm. tomorrow evening winds of 40. by monday evening winds of 35. as it pulls away f the next 48 hours. future weather showing you as that system departs we could see 3 to 5 inches of rain around

senator john mccain died today after a battle with brain cancer. he was 81 years old. a war hero with decades of public service. >> arizona state troopers escorted mccain's body from his home in sedona to phoenix. mccain is expected to be honored in arizona and washington. he will then be buried at the u.s. naval academy cemetery in annapolis, mid. kenneth moton has a look back on the life of the political

maverick. >> reporter: he was a political maverick and a military hero. over five decades, john sydney mccain iii became a towering figure in american politics and public service. mccain grew up in northern virginia the middle child of three in a family of navy admirals. he attended the naval academy and became a combat aviator flying missions over north vietnam. in 1967 mccain was shot down, captured, tortured during 5 1/2 years in a north vietnamese jail dubbed the hanoi hilton. >> you have to have faith your country and countrymen are doing everything they can to bring you home. >> reporter: his scars of war became reminders of his valor, a decorated hero who turned to politics as a second calling. in 1982 mccain ran for congress in arizona, home to his wife, a phoenix schoolteacher who became

never took control of the justice department. and it's sort of an incredible thing. he took the job. then he said, i'm going to recuse myself. i said, what kind of a man is this? >> sessions has fired back telling reporters he took control on day one, and touted he's helped make president trump's agenda succeed. sessions has said he's tried to keep politics out of the justice department. at least seven people were arrested after a rally near a toppled confederate soldier statue turned violent. protesters clashed on the university of north carolina at chapel hill campus when punches were thrown. some people came carrying signs denounce racism, others seen wrapping themselves in confederate flags. the statue, called silent sam, was brought down monday night by protesters. three people have been charged in that demonstration. pope francis addressed the outrage over the church sex

abuse scandal during his visit to ireland today. speaking to government authorities in dublin, the pope said he shares the belief that the failure to punish those responsible has brought shame to the catholic community, but he gave no indication he would be taking any action nor did he address the recent allegations of widespread child abuse in pennsylvania. still ahead on abc 7 news at 11:00, a 6-year-old boy stands up to bullies and look what happened to him. his harrowing story that ended with him badly injured and in the hospital. keeping own land clean. the special event in the hopes of curbing the illegal dumping problem plaguing the city. we're tracking that cloud cover moving in overnight.

funeral services for mollie tibbetts will be held tomorrow in iowa. it will be inside the gym of her former high school in brooklyn.

the 20-year-old's body was found this week more than a month after she went missing. the tibbetts family lived in oakland when mollie was younger. 24-year-old cristhian rivera has been charged with her murder. a 6-year-old's boy heroic act to stand up to bullies ended with him in the hospital in seattle. carter was attacked at his apartment complex after he confronted kids for bullying his friend. he was then beaten with rocks, sticks, and had sawdust rubbed into his eyes. carter has a broken arm, cuts on his face, and needed eye surgery. >> they were bullying him, beating him up. i told them to stop. then they did it to me. >> what did they do to you? >> bullied me. >> the police say they have found a 5-year-old boy who started the whole thing, but due to the ages of everyone involved, it's likely there won't be any criminal charges. there is a gofundme page for carter, so far raised more than $11,000.

in the east pay, people took part in a bulky block party in an effort to keep their city clean. abc 7 news was in east oakland where neighbors had a chance to dump large, bulky items for free to curb illegal dumping. the event featured food trucks and music. people even got some help unloading their items. two other bulky block party events are planned in oakland next month. happening now, a bridge linking solano and sacramento counties closed until tomorrow. these are images of when the bridge was closed for emergency repairs earlier this week. it will reopen at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. find alternate routes by calling 511. weather, do you think drew gets bored of the forecast when it's like this? >> drew? bored with weather? no way. >> i love the fog. certainly we will have warmer temperatures as we head toward the month of september. tomorrow, though, it's all about that cool, cloudy start on your

running back alfred morris and defensive back richard sherman made their 49ers debut, both starting in today's hiti l oil stadium. morris making a strong case for a roster spot. 17 carries for 84 yards, including this game high 11-yarder. he had a 17-yard carry that was negated because of penalties. penalties and dropped passes hurt the offense. jimmy garoppolo, a would-be touchdown pass, but oops, garoppolo 9 of 19 for 135 yards. andrew luck and eric ibram connected for a 15-yard score, andrew luck's first touchdown pass since 2016. c.j. bethard, pettis can't hang on in the end zone.

49ers get their lone touchdown with four minutes remaining in the game on the quarterback keeper. the colts win 23-17. kyle shanahan is pleased with his new running back. >> i was happy from what i saw. looked like he got good rooks. and looked like he got more than what they blocked for. he ran hard. i was pleased with him. >> carried the ball well. i've only been here a week or so. i thought the o-line blocked great, both running and passing. gave me plenty of time, barely got touched today. that makes everything easier. the raiders have a quarterback controversy. nobody's made a clear case who should back up derek carr. manuel had a better performance, leading the team down the field on the lone touchdown drive, but he's fumbled the ball in three straight games. derek carr hasn't played much this preseason but coach gruden isn't concerned. >> i've seen enough. you know, there's not much more to see.
