good morning, north bay. let's get up and get going. >> this is abc 7ornings. good morning, everyone. thanks for joining us on this sunday, august 26th. let's start with the quick look at the weather with our meteorologist, lisa argen. good morning to you. we're waking up to clouds and cool temperatures in the 50s right now. live doppler 7 is showing the fog and low clouds extending out to the east bay. southwest wind of 22 by the delta. that's an indicator of another cool afternoon. here is walnut creek. clouds breaking up a bit. 56 downtown.

59 in mountain view. mid 50s in morgan hill and half moon bay. it's cloudy in the city. low 50s santa rosa, 55 by the delta. 56 in concord. so, we are looking at moderate air quality once again today throughout the bay area due to the smoke from the wildfires. getting better in the south central bay. we will see hazy conditions for another day. planning your day today, numbers in the 70s inlan by noontime. brighter skies. upper 60s around the bay. coastal clouds with a few breaks in the afternoon. 80s inland. by tonight that fog comes back. the sun setting before 8:00. >> lisa, thank you. new overnight, oakland police are investigating a deadly shooting. it happened near e street and elmhurst avenue. the department tweeted out a picture for us from the scene. this was just after 12:30 this morning. it's not clear what led up to the shooting. oakland police are asking anyone with information to give them a

call. the tributes continue to pour in for senator john mccain. he died yesterday after a battle with an aggressive brain cancer. mccain is expected to be honored in arizona and in washington thk before being laid to rest at the u.s. naval academy cemetery in annapolis, maryland. >> reporter: as senator john mccain leaves his home in arizona for the final time, tributes honoring his life and legacy are felt across the country. flags are hanging at half staff at the capitol and the white house. his fellow lawmakers remembering the four decades he served in congress. >> i hope we will remember him by being kinder to each other. by remembering what the politics is, it doesn't have to be a blood sport. we can work across the aisle and see the good in people. i will try to do more of that going ahead. >> reporter: speaker paul ryan

calling him a giant of our time. and senator lindsey graham remembering him as one of his dearest friends and mentors. his respect crossed party lines. democratic senator chuck schumer immediately announced a resolution to rename a senate office building in mccain's honor. >> everyone looked up to him. everyone respected him. it's going to take a long time to find another john mccain. >> reporter: from former presidents like the one he ran against, barack obama, writing despite their differences they saw their political battles as a privilege and noble. to donald trump who made controversial comments about mccain in the past, tweeting my deepest sympathies and respect. and his family. his daughter meghan mccain writing the task of my lifetime is to live up to his example, his expectations and his love. as fellow senator and former vice president joe biden put it, john mccain's impact on america

has not ended, not even close. it will go on for many years. local leaders are reacting to mccain's death. dia dianne feinstein he was a leader, public serve vant aant will be deeply missed. nancy pelosi writing he was a patriotic, courageous hero who served his country above all. eric swalwell says we remember senator mccain as a selfless patriot who put family and country first. coming up in the next half hour, a south bay mother shares a personal story about john mccain. how he helped her following the loss of her son. that's coming up in 30 minutes. b.a.r.t. police want to find the person responsible for injuring a 40-year-old man on a train. it happened at the macarthur b.a.r.t. station after 9:00 last night. investigators are saying that two people got into a fight that turned physical.

the injured man suffered a cut on his hand. this happened at the same station where 18-year-old nia wilson was stabbed to death last month. b.a.r.t. police say it appeared to be a random attack on wilson and her sister who is recovering from her injuries. the suspect in that case, john lee carol could face the death penalty if convicted. a driver is under arrest after this deadly crash in san francisco. investigators say a car hit a motorcycle near 23rd and arkansas streets just before 4:00 yesterday afternoon. the man on the motorcycle died. the driver of the car took off. officers were able to track down the suspect a short time later. counselors will be on hand at a fairfield high school tomorrow after a shooting that killed a 16-year-old and put the school on lockdown. police identified the victim as omar willis of fairfield. the shooting happened after 5:00

friday night a block from armlio high school. >> it was terrifying. >> reporter: karen duff was working at the stadium concession stand before kickoff of the jv football game when chaos unfolded. >> people started running into the concession stand saying that the school was on lockdown. that there was gunfire. >> reporter: her son, justin s a jv player. he was on the field. >> we had the national anthem and then kickoff. then three pops. >> reporter: those pops were gunfire from washington street and bell avenue. police called it a gun battle. >> we know there were multiple shooters. it appeared the groups were shooting at each other. >> reporter: you can see how close it was to the high school. just a block away from campus. one bullet ripping through the radiator of this minivan. a 16-year-old was killed, an 18-year-old wounded. the football stadium was evacuated. hundreds of spectators told to take shelter in the gym.

police say it's the same place where one of the suspects ran and hid, blending in with the crowd. >> i was scared to death for my son. >> i didn't know where he was. we just knew he was i then we heard one of the gunmen might be in the gym. to think your child in there, you never think it will happen to you. >> reporter: the jv team took cover in the locker room. isaiah came back for the shoes he had to leave behind on friday. >> they said the dude might be in the gym or something. they didn't know where he was at. >> reporter: the suspect hiding in the gym was arrested. police found a second suspect at a house nearby. the school district says at this point it doesn't know if the victims or suspects were students here. monday morning counselors will be available to talk to students about the incident. happening today, a celebration of life for kevin manning, he's the pedi cab driver who was killed in a hit

and run in san francisco. police are still looking for the driver who hit manning while he pedalled along the embarcadero back in late june. the celebration of life is at 2:00 this afternoon at lindley meadow in golden gate park. funeral services for molly tibbets will be held in iowa today. the service will be inside the gym of her former high school in brooklyn. the 20-year-old's body was found last week more than a month after she was reported missing. 24-year-old christian rivera is charged with her murder. tibbetts spent part of her childhood in oakland before moving to iowa. the sheriff's office wants to find the high school wrestling coach suspected of running off with a 16-year-old girl. this is the man they are looking for. he's 25-year-old phillip madlea of stockton. investigators say he and the teen are in a relationship. the girl attends the same high school where he coached. investigators believe they are in a green 1994 toyota extra cab

truck. it is similar to the one you see here. the search continues for a 66-year-old woman who was reported missing more than a week ago. abc 7 news was on university avenue in east palo alto where searchers gathered yesterday. the woman was last seen driving near the dumbarton bridge. that was on august 17th. her sons say she recently had back surgery. she was taking painkillers that might impair her judgment. >> we don't know what her state of mind was. i don't believe she was upset. i know she didn't like staying at home all the time, being on bed rest, the pain and all those things. >> here is another look at the woman, she's 5'1", weighing about 120 pounds. she may be driving her 2002 mercedes clk coupe.

runners will take part in the 42nd annual bridge to bridge run along the embarcadero in san francisco. the runners experience a sightseeing tour of the city with historic sites. the 5k and 12k races start at the bay bridge, pass through fisherman's wharf and ending at the run benefits special olympics of northern california. it starts at 8:00 this morning. welcome back, lisa. you were missed for those few weeks. >> thank you. i have a little scar here on my elbow. those runners have some nice strong acls which i'm working on. mine not so strong. good morning, everyone. it is a cloudy and comfortable start out there. look at this beautiful shot. the sun coming up in another 20 minutes. it's in the low 50s in danville. 56 in livermore. the haze still with us today.

rideshare company lift says it has banned one of its drivers after an east bay woman says he took her miles away from her destination. she said she escaped into the woods when she started to feel unsafe. abc 7 news reporter kate larsen has more on what happened. >> it became a fight or flight situation. >> reporter: that's how brittney sunquist describes the lyft ride she took friday morning. >> it was a situation that i needed to quickly escape from. >> reporter: the 27-year-old artist says she ordered the lift from a bar in oakland at 2:04 a.m. the app said she should have arrived in east oakland 14 minutes later. >> but for whatever reason, the driver veered off the destination that he was given, which was my home. and was driving me deeper into an isolated and desolate area of the oakland hills that i'm unfamiliar with.

>> reporter: brittney says she ended up here in the area of montclair park, 3 1/2 miles from her home. she said she was able to escape from the lyft and run into the woods. unsure of where she was, brittney ordered another lyft at 2:30 a.m. to take her home. >> you don't know how you're going to react until these situations until they happen to you. >> reporter: she filed a police report with oakland p.d. and has been in touch with lyft, who released a statement saying in part, we've reached out to the passenger to extend our full support and the driver has been permanently banned from the lyft platform. >> i've heard of other incidences like this. >> reporter: amanda wood is brittney's roommate and a lift driver. >> as a female driver there's been times where i've started to question, am i safe? my comfortable with this passenger? >> reporter: in an effort to improve ride share safety, the women started a petition asking lyft and uber the option of requesting a female driver. just this week abc 7 ran a story about another ride share company coming to san francisco this fall called safer.

the app offers the choice of a female driver, and gives drivers more say about who they pick up. kate larsen, abc 7 news. a key link for thousands of commuters in san francisco is back open following two months of major construction. abc 7 news was at the west portal muni metro station yesterday where light rail trains entered and exited the twin peaks tunnel for the first time since june. muni replaced all of the rail and other key systems inside the 100-year-old tunnel. many people spent their summer riding shuttle buses and navigating other detours. >> i'm excited. it was really inconvenient to have the street closures. >> they'll see a quicker trip through the tunnel. the speed is up. it should be a smoother ride. >> muni finished the project on time to restore full service on the k, l, m, and t metro lines.

there's a new restroom inside golden gate park thanks to a group of neighbors. abc 7 news was at the boat playground at 45th avenu celebration yesterday. generations of children have treasured this urban oasis, but it lacked restrooms until now. a group of sunset district neighbors collected hundreds of signatures to make it happen. >> instead of having to go home or especially across this busy street, we thought we should build a bathroom. >> birthday parties were cut short. play dates were cut short. a lot of people were going in the bushes. >> neighbors say the closest bathroom before this was a 15-minute walk away. a brand-new house in los gatos is open to the public this weekend. it's no ordinary house.

it's sunset magazine's 2018 idea house. it takes a classic design and adds modern touches for today. david louie has this look inside. >> reporter: who doesn't look to tour a house and discover interesting ideas and features? sunset's 2018 idea house looks like a traditional craftsman. but with a modern interpretation. on the main level, it's difficult to distinguish the outdoors from the inside because of folding glass doors in the living room and in the great room where the eating area seems to be a natural extension of the house. even the staircase lets light through. >> what a craftsman house would typically have would be the picket rail, and here we have a house with a glass rail. it allows us to see through the house. >> reporter: the house is 2,900 square feet, three bedrooms and a study. >> i think it lives more like a 4,000 square foot house. even the basement has flow in and out. >> reporter: the basement has a media room with a built-in bar.

temperatures, which we should see for this time of year. 60s in san francisco. 70s and 80s in san jose. notice where we are today, 2 degrees cooler in napa to 6 degrees cooler than we should be in oakland and redwood city. getting used to this pattern. at the beach, it's cloudy now. we'll see sun. we'll call it partly cloudy. the numbers in a narrow range with low 60s from ocean beach to half moon bay. mid 60s in santa cruz. cool for a beach day. that water temperature at 60 degrees. spending time in the north bay, numbers will be in the 50s to sta start out. settling into the mid 70s for the bay today. dropping back off into the 60s with low clouds and fog. in the south bay, haze by the water. mid 70s in milpitas. it's been cool and breezy at

we're socked in with low clouds trying to find you an interesting looking picture. from mount tam, a little color to this. this is due to the haze in the atmosphere from the wildfires. it was better yesterday, but still it's not going to be completely clear. so that advisory still in effect. 56 in san francisco. 59 in mountain view. mid 50s in morgan hill and half moon bay. the fog reaching well east of the bay. that's another indication of why and how it's going to be below average again there. 53 santa rosa. southwest winds blowing now. and that's an indicator that that area as well will see temperatures capped off in the low 80s. air quality moderate for everybody. still haze today. temperatures in the 50s now. we'll rebound to near 60 at the coast by noontime. 60s and 70s around the bay.

it will be brighter but clouds lingering at the coast. temperatures running shy of where we should be this time of year. >> lisa, thank you. john mccain, war hero, six-term senator from arizona. tributes are pouring in this morning for the man known as a political maverick. arizona state troopers escorted mccain's body from his home to phonix. he passed away yesterday after s serce to the country began in the late 1950s. in 1967 his navy plane was shot down during the he waseverel injured and sent more than five years as a prisoner of war. mccain was elected to the house of representatives in 1982, and the senate in 1986. he ran for president twice. senator mccain was 81 years old. many people are honoring his life including a mother right here in the bay area.

amanda talked to her about how senator mccain helped her through the loss of her son. >> reporter: alice was living some of the darkest days of her life when senator john mccain and his wife cindy made a special trip to berkeley. he spoke at mark bingham's memorial dedication. bingham was alice's son, and was on board flight 93 on september 11, 2001. bingham and others are believed to have thwarted the hijackers plans to crash the plane into a building in washington, d.c. >> what he said touched my heart. he said i didn't know mark bingham but -- >> i may very well owe my life to mark and the others who summoned the courage and love necessary to deny those depraved hateful men their terrible triumph. such a debt you incur for life. >> reporter: alice says mccain brought a sense of calm when there were so many questions about her son's death.

in life she said her son respected the republican politician. during a campaign stop in 2000, bingham went out of his way to meet mccain. their interaction captured in this picture. >> senator mccain was trying to look tall. it was hard to do next to a guy who's 6'4". they were grinning. >> reporter: a memory of happier and healthier times. alice says mccain's words and actions all those years ago brought the admiration her son had for the senator full circle. >> he was at the capitol building on that awful afternoon. so i think that's why he told us all that he had a personal debt to mark and the others because he may very well have saved my life, he said. >> reporter: alice tells me she only wishes she had said she had more. she never got around to writing john mccain about the impact he had on her life. instead now she will write cindy. >> mccain's daughter meghan, one

congress, he lived by his creed every day. flags at the white house are at half staff for senator mccain. president trump tweeted, my deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of senator john mccain. our hearts and prayers are with you. arizona's governor also ordered all flags in his state flown at half staff. >> you can remember senator john mccain on the abc 7 news facebook page. share our posts on your wall and write your own tributes. president trump escalated his attacks on attorney general jeff sessions, even hinting at firing someone he hand picked for the job. the president lashed out on twitter saying sessions doesn't understand what is happening underneath his command position. that tweet follows another attack by mr. trump during an interview with fox news.

in sports, tomorrow the a's will start a huge series in houston against the a.l.-west leading astros. first this morning oakland will try to take their four-game weekend series in minnesota against the twins. the game starts at 11:10. the giants face the rangers at at&t park. that first pitch is at 1:05 this afternoon. the 49ers will close out their preseason thursday night at levi stadium against the chargers. yesterday the niners played the colts in indianapolis with the starters getting their most action of the preseason. min mindy bach has the highlights in this morning's sports. good morning, everyone. running back alfred morris and richard sherman made their debut

in the 49ers third preseason game. both started in exhibition at lucas oil stadium. morris is making a strong case for a roster spot. he had 17 carries for 84 yards, including this long for 11. he had a 17-yard carry that was negated because of penalties. penalties and dropped passes hurt the offense. jimmy garoppolo, a would-be touchdown pass, but oops, garoppolo 9 of 19 for 135 yards. andrew luck and eric ibram conn an lucs first touchdown pass since 2016. c.j. bethard had a great pass to pettis, but pettis can't hang on in the end zone. 49ers get their lone touchdown with four minutes remaining in the game on the quarterback keeper. the colts win 23-17. kyle shanahan is pleased with his new running back. >> i was happy from what i saw. looked like he got good rooks. and it looked like he always got more than what they blocked for.

he ran hard. i was pleased with him. >> carried the ball well. i've only been here a week or so. i thought the o-line blocked great, both running and passing. those guys gave me plenty of time. barely got touched today. that makes everything easier. buster posey was not in the lineup for the giants as he will undergo season-ending hip surgery monday in colorado. the all-star catcher was still available off the bench against the rangers. this might have been kind of mean. the giants honored the 2010 world championship team before the game that was the team that beat the rangers. like friday night, san francisco jumped out to a four-run lead in the first inning thanks to brandon crawford's three-run home run. in the seventh inning, hunter pence pinch hitting. his second home run of the season. that made it 5-0. giants win but don't make it easy. will smith loaded the bases in the ninth with the rangers down

from our east bay hills camera, just a beautiful picture. we had the full moon earlier. so it's a cloudy start for everyone. a bit of haze mixed in with sunshine today. the air quality has been improving, it will take another day or so for it to get back to standards that we have around here in the bay area. cooler for the first half of the week. subtle changes for the second half. it's all about low clouds and fog. by 2:30 this afternoonful lo, lw the clouds pull back and push back in through the later afternoon. your monday morning may be mist and drizzle. by the afternoon, once again, partial clearing at the coast. with that forecast, we can't get too warm. into monday, low 80s inland. upper 60s around the bear. below average. for tuesday, one of the cooler days as we continue to see numbers trail off a few degrees inland. staying just about the same by

entitled to a credit toward future travel. instead mary lou filed a dispute with her credit card company and won a full refund. >> i owed road scholar nothing. >> but it didn't end there. road scholar later billed her nearly $2,300, half the cost of the cruise. that's when she came to 7 on your side. we contacted road scholar and mary lou got a call. >> we made a mistake, you don't owe us any money. >> road scholar tells us, "she accepted our sincere apology for the bill that was sent to her by mistake after we issued her a credit, unaware that her credit card issued her a full refund at the same time." >> i just think you're wonderful. the insurance administrator said mary lou failed to provide documentation showing she would be in treatment at the time of the cruise, which was leaving months after she filed her claim. if you file a travel insurance claim, make sure you read all the rules beforehand. i'm michael finney, 7 on your side. coming up, a day dedicated to dogs. it's national dog day. how one bay area sports team is celebrating with fans.

animal advocate colleen page founded the holiday in 2004. the san francisco giants are celebrating with the 2018 dog days of summer. fans who brought advanced tickets can bring their dog to the game today. the sold-out event includes a pregame parade and a costume contest. a dog in finland is getting a lot of attention for its special talent. he plays piano and sings -- sort of. ♪ this is elmo a key-stroking red setter. he likes to test out his vocal range at his owner's music shop. this is not a one-time thing. elmo has been performing since he was puppy. i don't think he'll make it to "american idol," though. >> no. no i have to agree with you. gray start out there. we will look for hazy sunshine.
