>> announcer: good morning bay area. let's get up and get going. this is "abc 7 mornings." good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, august 26th. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist, lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn, good morning to you. lots of gray sky out there. that marine layer once again over into the east bay. and that stratus will be scouring back to the shoreline later this morning. a live look at sfo, some sun here. temperatures are in the mid- and upper 50s from san francisco to san jose and morgan hill. we still have the haze in the atmosphere today. mt. tam, mid-50s. 61 in concord. the reason for that, still the smoke in the north bay mainly from the wildfires well to the

north. but we'll see the hazy condition throughout the afternoon. seven-mile visibility in half moon bay. a live look outside with the breezy winds. air quality moderate today to good. and we'll look for the numbers to be in the 80s inland, 70s around the bay, and cool 60s at the coast, carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. developing news this morning, oakland police are investigating two shootings that left two men dead and injured, three other people. please found two people suffering from gunshot wounds at 2:20 this morning near 11th avenue and international boulevard. a third died at the hospital. earlier this morning, two other people were found with gunshot injuries near e street and elm hurt aven hurst avenue. it's unclear if the two incidents are connected. police ask anyone with information to> the tributes co pour in this morning for senator john mccain.

bin cancer.erday after a battle he's expected to be honored in arizona and in washington this week, before being laid to rest at the u.s. naval academy cemetery in annapolis, maryland. here is abc news reporter maggie rule. >> reporter: senator john mccain leaves his home in arizona for the final time. tributes are felt across the country. flags hang at half-staff at the capitol and the white house. his fellow lawmakers remembering the four decades he served in congress. >> i hope that we will remember him by being a little kinder to each other and by remembering that politics doesn't have to be a blood sport, we can work across the aisle and see the good in people. i'm certainly going to try to do more of that going ahead. >> reporter: speaker paul ryan calling him a giant of our time. and senator lindsey graham simply remembering him as one of his dearest friends and mentors.

his respect crossed party lines. democratic senator chuck schumer immediately announced a resolution to rename a senate office building in mccain's honor. >> everyone looked up to him. everyone respected him. it's going to take a long time to find another john mccain. >> reporter: from former presidents like the one he ran against, barack obama, writing that despite their differences they saw their political battles as a privilege and noble, to donald trump, who has made controversial comments about mccain in the past, tweeting "my deepest sympathies and respect," and his family, his daughtering me meghan mccain mccain mccain m meghan mccain writing about her love. maggie rule, abc

senator dianne feinstein tweeted that john mccain was a leader, a public servant and a patriot. house minority leader writes, he was a patriotic, courageous hero who served his country above all. east bay congressman eric swalwell said, we remember senator mccain as a selfless patriot. b.a.r.t. police want to find the person responsible for injuring a 40-year-old m the macarthur b.a.r.t. station. two people got into a fight that turned physical. the injured man suffered a cut on his hand. this happened at the same station where 18-year-old nia wilson was stabbed to death last month. b.a.r.t. police say it appeared to be a random attack on wilson and her sister, who is recovering from her injuries. the suspect in that case could face the death penalty if

convicted. a driver is under arrest after this deadly crash in san francisco. investigators say a car hit a motorcycle near 23rd and arkansas streets just brday aft. the man on the bicycle died. the driver of the car took off. officers were able to track down the suspect a short time later. counselors will be on hand at a fairfield high school tomorrow after a shooting that killed a 16-year-old and puppet the school on lockdown. police have identified the victim as ahmar willis. he is from fairfield. the shooting happened just after 5:00 friday night, a block from armijo high school. here is abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard. >> it was terrifying. >> reporter: karin duff was working at the stadium concession stand right before kickoff of the jc football game when chaos unfolded.

>> people started run othe concession stand, saying te school was on lockdown and that there was gunfire. >> reporter: her son was on the field. >> we had the national anthem and the . >> reporter: that was gunfire coming from washington street and bell avenue. police called it a gun battle. >> we know it was multiple shooters. it appears groups were actually shooting at chosen. >> reporter: it was just a block away from campus. one bullet ripping through the radiator of this minivan. a 16-year-old was killed, an 18-year-old wounded. the football stadium was evacuated. hundreds of spectators told to take shelter in the gym. one of the suspects ran and hid, blending in with the crowd. >> i was scared to death for my son, i didn't know where he was. then we heard one of the gunmen might be in the gym. to think your own child is in there, you never think it's going to happen to you. >> reporter: the jv team took

cover in the locker room. >> they said the dude might be in the gym, because they didn't know where he was at. >> reporter: the suspect hiding in the gym was arrested. police found a second suspect at a house nearby. the school district says at this point it doesn't know if the shooting victims or the suspects were students here at armijo. on monday morning, counselors will be available to talk to students about the incident. in fairfield, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. the san joaquin county sheriff's office wants to find the high school wrestling coach suspected of running off with a 16-year-old girl. this is the man police are looking for. he is 25-year-old phillip of stockton. investigators say he and the teen are in a relationship. the girl attends the same high school where he coached. investigators believe they are in a green 1994 toyota extra cab truck similar to this picture that you see here.

happening today, a celebration of life for kevin manning, the cabdriver hit and killed in san francisco. police are still looking for the hit man. the celebration of his life is at 2:00 this afternoon at lindley meadow in golden gate park. happening today, the annual silicon valley pride parade. the parade starts at 10:00 this morning on east julian street along market street in downtown san jose. dozens of companies from the bay area and nonprofit organizations will take part. that's followed by the day-long festival with music, dancing, and food. festival tickets are $5. and look who's here after a long time away, lisa's back. >> i'm back, glad to be back, everyone. good morning. we are looking at some gray conditions out there. but peeks of sun coming out.

24-year-old cristhian rivera is charged with her murder. she spent part of her childhood in oakland before moving to iowa. all tropical storm warnings and watches have been canceled across the hawaiian islands as tropical storm lane has passed on by. this morning a new look from above at the serious flooding with more on the way. abc 7 news meteorologist rob marciano has the latest from honolulu. >> reporter: overnight tropical storm lane continuing to rake the hawaiian islands with wind, rain, and pounding surf. an astounding 45 inches of rain falling on the big island in four days. the saturated ground refusing to hold. trees, dirt, and debris poured over the highways, making many roads impassible. the port of honolulu, shut down during the hurricane, now reopened. >> planes have to come from the mainland to get critical supplies out to the island. these aircraft can handle the

weather better than a helicopter can. >> i would trust them in this weather. >> reporter: now these resilient cargo planes are delivering fema supplies to the outer islands hardest hit. we jumped on a helicopter and immediately saw what may be the storm's signature. >> the signature of hurricane lane will be wild fiefireswildf. >> reporter: and of course a tremendous amount of rain causing mudslides from rain. >> at 2,000 feet, you can also see the rain coming in. >> reporter: rainfall totals that are approaching that of hurricane harvey, striking texas one year ago this weekend. here in hawaii we're hoping for a drying trend to take hold around mid-week. rob marciano, abc news, honolulu. ride share company lyft has banned one of its drivers after an east bay woman says he took

her miles away from her destination. she says she escaped into the woods when she started to feel unsafe. abc 7 news reporter kate larsen >> it became a fight or flight situation. >> reporter: that's how brittney sundquist describes the lyft ride she took friday morning. >> it was a situation i needed to escape from. >> reporter: the 27-year-old artist says she ordered the lyft from a bar in oakland at 2:04 a.m. she should have arrived home 14 minutes later. >> for whatever reason, the driver veered off the destination, which was my home, and driving deeper and deeper into a desolate area of the oakland hills that i'm unfamiliar with. >> reporter: she says she ended up here in this area, 3 1/2 miles away from her park in oakland. she says she was able to escape from the lyft car and run into the woods. she ordered another lyft at 2:30 a.m. to take her home. >> i feel like you don't know

how you're going to react in these situations until they happen to you. >> reporter: she filed a police report with oakland pd. lyft has released a statement which says in part, we have reached out to the passenger to extend our support and the driver has been permanently banned. amanda wood is brittney's roommate and happens to be a lyft driver. >> as a female driver, there's been times where i've started to question, like am i safe, am i comfortable with this passenger. >> reporter: in an effort to improve ride share safety, the women have started a petition to ask lyft and uber to give passengers the option of a woman driver. a new sapp, safer, gives passengers more say about what kind of driver picks them up. an alert for b.a.r.t. passengers, trains are not running between west oakland and

19th street and lake merritt stations this weekend. you're going to have to ride the free bus bridge to link up between those stations. it's all part of ongoing maintenance. b.a.r.t. will close these stations again labor day weekend. here or there. because of the thicker deck of marine clouds, up to 2,000 feet, we're a little bit e again, an of low pressure north of us allowing for healthy marine air and also some smoke from the wildfires to still transport into the bay area. so, breezy along the coast. the clouds will give way to a partly sunny day along the coast. 56 downtown. 58 oakland, mountain 54 in santa rosa and napa. even a little fog out there. winds blowing by the delta, 30 miles per hour. we're looking for another day when temperatures will be cooler than average. right now, because of that deck of low clouds, taller than yesterday, two to three degrees co cooler, 24 hours ago compared to

right now. and the flags are blowing 15 to 25 miles later today. hazy afternoon with more sunshine. moderate air quality. still the advisory with us today. it will be cooler, even the first few days of the workweek, leading up to the middle of the workweek, trying to bring in slightly warmer temperatures by the end of the week. here is where we sit right now. as we stack up the averages in the first column, and where we're going to sit today. six degrees cooler than average in oakland. san francisco, san jose, concord, four degrees cooler than late august. and redwood city, six degrees cooler. the fog and low clouds again tomorrow morning. then by tuesday morning, peels back by the afternoon. wednesday morning, all the way to the delta and sacramento valley. that will dictate the temperatures on monday with low 80s once again. very little change around the bay. below average numbers continue into tuesday with upper 70s to near 80. and no changes yet into wednesday. so if you like this pattern, you're in luck. we'll continue to see this for

i'm trying to find a nice picture for you but there's so much gray out here. you can see it here in emeryville, a lot of clouds and temperatures are cooler than what we've been used to. mid- and upper 50s from san jose to san francisco. and check out this live view, this is walnut creek where you're holding on to the low cloud deck. 54 in santa rosa and napa. 61 in concord. right here from the roof camera, you can see not a lot of wind at all. that breeze will kick up and we're going to see moderate air quality today. some places will be good. but you'll still notice the haze around today. and as we go through the afternoon, temperatures will be very similar to what we experienced yesterday, upper 70s by about 3:00 p.m., out towards our warmest inland valleys. 77 in san jose with just mid- and upper 60s around the bay. and then tonight, the fog is back. the sun sets before 8:00. we'll let you know how long this pattern sticks around, coming up, carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. developing news, crews in chicago are working to find the cause of an early morningth vic

two adults, including a baby. a teenager and an adult were taken to the hospital with critical injuries. according to city officials, the building failed its last inspection in june due to electrical issues. firefighters say there were no working smoke detectors in that building. in washington, tensions are escalating this weekend between president trump and his attorney general. the president tweeted that jeff sessions doesn't know what's going on in the justice department. abc news reporter white house correspondent tara palmieri has the story. >> reporter: president trump back on the attack against his own attorney general jeff sessions, claiming he's letting special counsel robert mueller have a field day, tweeting, jeff sessions wouldn't allow politics to influence him only because he doesn't understand what is happening underneath his command position. >> he feels like jeff needed --

news, washington. east bay congressman eric swalwell says democrats should upcoming midterm elections. he appeared on "this week with george stephanopoulos" this morning to talk about michael cohen's case. cohen pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations and implicated the president, saying it was at the direction of the then-candidate. congressman swalwell says there isn't enough evidence yet to determine if president trump violated those laws. >> we don't want to be as reckless with the facts as he is. putting forth an case is important for the american people. >> the congressmanays the core e

issue people from both sides should be talking about is improving the lives of people. tributes are pouring in for the man known as a political maverick. this is a live look now at the white house where the flag is flying at half-staff for senator mccain. president trump, who had a contentious relationship with mccain, tweeted last night, saying "my deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of john mccain, our hearts and prayers are with you." former rivals and presidents barack obama and george w. bush were asked to give eulogies by mccain, who had been planning his funeral services over the past year. his family made it clear president trump is not invited. arizona state troopers escorted mccain's body from his home to phoenix. as you know, he passed away yesterday after making the decision to stop treatment for his brain cancer. mccain's service to the country

began in the late 1950s. in 1967, his navy plane was shot down during the vietnam war. he was severely injured and spent more than five years as a prisoner of war. mccain was elected to the house of representatives in 1982. the senate in 1986. he ran for president twice. senator mccain was 81 years old. many are honoring his life, including a mother right here in the bay area. abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo talked to her about how senator mccain helped her through the loss of her son. >> reporter: alice hoagland was living some of the darkest days of her life when senator john mccain and his wife cindy made a special trip to cal berkeley. he spoke at mark bingham's memorial dedication. bingham was her son. bingham and others are believed to have thwarted hijackers'

layer that has grown taller. and we will see breezy at times today, clouds peeling back from the shoreline. a live look outside from san rafael where we have a mix of clouds and sun. it's a cool 56 downtown, 57 in san jose, with low 60s in morgan hill. it's been one of the warmer places, morgan hill and gilroy. look at the sun here at sfo, no delays. the peninsula will be breezy later on today. mid-50s santa rosa and napa. the winds pick up through the delta. if you're headed into the sacramento valley towards the sierra nevada, a red flag warning for mountains there. 59 in livermore. finally, here in san francisco, still on the gray side. so a light jacket if you're headed into town. and a little bit of afternoon sun. cloudy skies for most. hazy afternoon sun with the air quality once again moderate to good in spots. and the cooling trend is going to last through the first part of the workweek. santa cruz right now with all the cloud cover, in the 60s later this afternoon.

we'll get some clearing, and those winds up to about 15 miles an hour. partly cloudy skies, low 60s from ocean beach and half moon bay. bodega bay at about 60. further north into the valleys of the north bay, it will be in the mid-70s. so really not too hard to take. a nice afternoon there. with temperatures in the south bay just a little bit warmer, upper 70s, very similar to yesterday in santa clara and san jose. mid-70s for you in palo alto and mountain view. a late afternoon sea breeze. lots of clouds along the shoreline. for a time they're going to peel back and give us hazy sun. 65 downtown. north bay, upper 70s from santa rosa. near east bay, 60s. berkeley, mid-70s. 77 union city. you head inland, irving this is where we have all the cheers with low 80s. nice, comfortable afternoon. it's been pretty consistent for you folks. and the low clouds and fog back
