at record highs and the dow closed past 26,000 for the first time since february. nasdaq nasdaq closing 41 points up and finishing at 8,000 for the first time and s&p 500 jumped 22 points closing at 2896. older americans are filing for bankruptcy at an increasing rate. is there some help available. >> a look at the problem growing. >> catch this number, more than 12% of filers are now 65 or older. that doubled the number from back in 1991. as government has pulled back the social safety net and employers canceled pensions and they now are getting jobs working overnight in convenience stores. how to avoid that happening in your life, george, a good friend of this program. i know it crosses all age groups. medical bills is one of the major reasons for bankruptcy.

it has to be double that for seniors. >> senior citizens have the highest inflation rate because they have to pay for housing and inflation. the youngest is 54 and the oldest is 72. the median retirement savings is only 48,000. the math doesn't work. there's going to be a problem out into the future. >> if you're retired and you file bankruptcy, what next? you hang onto your house and that's about it, right? >> that's about it. you file bankruptcy and we normally don't recommend that. you have to go through a process to try to figure out what you can do today. you develop three columns, first column, list your assets, some might be lazy assets, maybe you should sell your house to get cash from that to help feed you while retiring. the middle column would be debt, credit card debt. maybe reconsolidate your debt. the third column is expense, maybe youo a lower cost area.

a way of look writing you're at today and managing it to take care of tomorrow. a lot of us will live 20, maybe 30 years beyond our retirement and we have to prepare for that. >> it appears to me millennials are hip to this, saw their parents lose their homes, i think they're a lot better than generations coming before. am i right or want it to be? >> no, you're right. we as baby boomers saw our parents go to work everyday, got their social security and somehow had enough money, because they had a pension. the baby boomers do not have pensions. millennials see that and a lot of my millennial clients are putting away as much money into their 401(k)s and baby boomers taking retirement beforeevy yro more. you're giving up some checks in the beginning. when you're older in friends and

80s and 90s you have more money and we're trying to maximize our cash flow to be independent in our retirement. >> all of those watching now we just made a little paranoid, save more. is that all you can do? is that really what we're down to? >> saving is really important. you have to look at your current assets and see if they're lazy assets. sometimes we have things that don't provide cash flow we can convert them to cash flow. we have to look at our debt, our expenses. how we're spending our money is really important. maybe we don't need to go out to dinner, two times a week, maybe it can be one. we have to find ways of reducing our expenses to make our money last a long period of time. when that paycheck stops all we have is our resources. >> at what age do people come in and they're serious, your clients? >> the millennials kind of get it, starting to put away a lot of money. people in their 40s might have children and a house. when they get into their 50s and
