joining us. days after announcing they're cutting half of their sports programs, they're reversing course and reinstating three of them. >> they're all girls sports potentially violating title 9, a requirement that girls have equal access to sports in schools. laura has an eye on oakland with the latest. >> reporter: hi, kristen, these cuts announced after school was started for the fall semester took many people by surprise including it appears the district to some extent when it became clear the cuts affected girls more than boys, a violation of federal law. now, at least some cuts have been reversed. >> because of an anonymous donation we received since friday we are saving girls golf and girls tennis. >> reporter: it's game on for 10 of the high school sports cut by a school district thanks to a $35,000 donation. >> we knew this could not

continue. we had to take a different course of action, one major aspect appealing to the public. >> reporter: girls lacrosse will be saved and bowling become a club sport. they had announced 10 sports, half of its programs would be canceled to save money. 347 were girls, 183 janeesa plays golf for the girls. >> it gives me a chance to put myself out there and have colleges look at me to start on their teams. >> reporter: several sports remain in jeopardy, wrestling, swim, boys golf, boys tennis, boys volleyball and boys badminton. >> if they keep the major sports, baseball, basketball, football, that leaves a lot of kids who participate in some of these other programs left out of the thing.

prosecutors greater power to charge police who use deadly force has ended at the state capitol. lawmakers cite too many discrepancies and opposition and still require more stringent policy and training protocols as well as more disciplinary action for officers who do not follow procedures. >> seattle and san francisco have had this policy in place without the prosecution of officers attached to it and they hav seen positive results. >> the measure was drafted in response to the officer shooting death of stephon clark. current california code allows an officer to use deadly force when reasonable and would have changed that to permit only preventing the imminent death or bodily force on an officer. a surcharge on your power bills, the bill would allow utilities in the state to sell bonds and pass on the cost to

customers. it could help cover debt when utilities equipment starts wildfires. supporters say it's written so it won't become excessive but others say it's a bailout for those like pg&e expected to pay billions of dollars for the wildfires that tore through our region last fall. scientists say climate changes will only make wildfires costlier and more destructive for the state. they say fires will burn rougherly 75% more acreage by the end of the year. that's the equivalent of two extra car fires. ryan zinke toured the car fires and likened it to a war zone and said bad forest management was to blame, not global warming. they're considering a bill to ease restrictions on logging on private lands to try to reduce fire risk. starting today you may notice more officers along a big stretch of interstate 80.

california highway patrol officers teamed up with nevada state troopers to increase patrols along 600 miles of 80 to san francisco to the nevada utah line. the goal here is to reduce distracted and reckless driving. the effort in conjunction with several events in nevada including burning man in reno and red cookoff in sparks runs through labor day. former 49ers colin kaepernick is looking to cash in on the national anthem debate he has started. he filed in california to trademark the slogan, i'm with cap. back in 2016 he was the first nfl player to take a knee to the anthem. the trademark will let kaepernick charge for the merchandise. a major recall you should know tonight about hamburger affecting stores in northern california. >> michael finney is here to

passengers who buy the tickets will pay an extra five bucks to academic a bag. $30 for the first bag and $40 for your second. for all but the highest fare cost the fee for changing or canceling a ticket will rise from 150 to $200. the legislature is struggling to come wake up a work-aound for homeowners getting nailed by new federal income tax rules. they cap a federal write-off on state income and property tax together. this is seen by many as a swipe at states with high property values and higher state taxes. and overwhelmingly in the last election. two peoples allow taxpayers to contribute to nonprofits or the state's college tuition fund in exchange for 75 to 80% tax credit. however, nothing's been done and time is running out. it's doubtful they will get anything done.
