live where you live, this is abc 7 news. >> it didn't surprise me that somebody snapped with the pressure from video gaming. >> going inside the mind of an esports gamer tonight to try to understand why one would open fire at a tournament. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm kristen sze in for ama daetz. and here is the latest on the shooting that left three people dead, including the gunman. tonight electronic arts canceled three more madden esports tournaments to review their safety protocols. >> investigators say gunman david katz clearly targeted the two gamers he killed, following them into a back room and opening fire. >> katz's parents said he had mental health issue, and according to divorce filings was on anti-psych cot ticks and anti-depression at a young age. >> kate larsen talked with mental health experts about the

effects of gaming and she is here in the studio with the story. >> dan, kristen, police have not given a motive, so we don't know why david katz shot fellow gamers before killing himself. we do know that katz was hospitalized in psychiatric facilities twice as a teenager and was entrenched in the video game world. >> you're a little bit psychologically imbalanced and then you lose, i could see why it would push somebody over the edge. >> dr. david greenfield is a psychiatrist and founder of the center for internet aged technology addiction. he spoke to us via facetime. >> i will tell you, if you're playing at the tournament level or watching people play at the tournament level, it's very easy to get lost in cyberspace and to cross that line online to a level of addiction. >> david katz regularly competed in gaming tournaments with cash prizes. on sunday, police say he targeted fellow gamers, avoiding other patrons at the bar. one witness said katz lost a game the day before the shooting

and refused to shake hands afterwards with his competitors. >> we are terrible at predicting violence. we can't predict who is going to become violent or not. lots of people have mental health issues and psychological issues and they never commit violence. >> dr. greenfield says if you or your child is playing video games more than a few hours a day or is unwilling to get off the game, it may be wise to look into whether there is a potential problem there. >> are a lot of families with kids that struggle with mental health issues. >> according to documents relating to katz's parents divorce, david was under the care of mental health professionals since he was at least 11 years old. >> your child needs help if they are, i think, refusion talk to you, if they're ivan refusing to get help, and you have a sense that something is wrong. >> now, we have more information on our website, abc7news.com with links to resources about technology addiction, and even a link to a video game addiction screening test.
