live where you live, this is abc 7 news. >> it didn't surprise me that somebody snapped with the pressure from video gaming. >> going inside the mind of an esports gamer tonight to try to understand why one would open fire at a tournament. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm kristen sze in for ama daetz. and here is the latest on the shooting that left three people dead, including the gunman. tonight electronic arts canceled three more madden esports tournaments to review their safety protocols. >> investigators say gunman david katz clearly targeted the two gamers he killed, following them into a back room and opening fire. >> katz's parents said he had mental health issue, and according to divorce filings was on anti-psych cot ticks and anti-depression at a young age. >> kate larsen talked with mental health experts about the

effects of gaming and she is here in the studio with the story. >> dan, kristen, police have not given a motive, so we don't know why david katz shot fellow gamers before killing himself. we do know that katz was hospitalized in psychiatric facilities twice as a teenager and was entrenched in the video game world. >> you're a little bit psychologically imbalanced and then you lose, i could see why it would push somebody over the edge. >> dr. david greenfield is a psychiatrist and founder of the center for internet aged technology addiction. he spoke to us via facetime. >> i will tell you, if you're playing at the tournament level or watching people play at the tournament level, it's very easy to get lost in cyberspace and to cross that line online to a level of addiction. >> david katz regularly competed in gaming tournaments with cash prizes. on sunday, police say he targeted fellow gamers, avoiding other patrons at the bar. one witness said katz lost a game the day before the shooting

and refused to shake hands afterwards with his competitors. >> we are terrible at predicting violence. we can't predict who is going to become violent or not. lots of people have mental health issues and psychological issues and they never commit violence. >> dr. greenfield says if you or your child is playing video games more than a few hours a day or is unwilling to get off the game, it may be wise to look into whether there is a potential problem there. >> are a lot of families with kids that struggle with mental health issues. >> according to documents relating to katz's parents divorce, david was under the care of mental health professionals since he was at least 11 years old. >> your child needs help if they are, i think, refusion talk to you, if they're ivan refusing to get help, and you have a sense that something is wrong. >> now, we have more information on our website, abc7news.com with links to resources about technology addiction, and even a link to a video game addiction screening test.

father edward reese in san francisco will take part in the wreath laying and address those in attendance. father reese spoke to abc 7 tonight about a side of mccain rarely seen, his love for nature. years ago when a flash flood hit near his sedona ranch, mccain was concerned by the displacement and the animals, in particular his favorite hawk. >> i was there when this bird came back. and there was grin on his face from ear to ear. just his hawk had come back. and that's the kind of man he was. >> the arizona memorial is just one of two planned for the late senator. abc news reporter marci gonzalez has more. >> his desk in the senate chamber covered in black velvet and white roses as colleagues honor senator john mccain. >> he was america's hero all along. >> the six-term senator, war hero, and two-time presidential candidate asking his former campaign manager to share his final words, a farewell letter

he has a previous dui conviction. the tourists had to call ride shares to pick them up. katie utehs, abc 7 news. tonight fema has awarded bart nearly $7 million to help with security eyewitness news reporter trains. it's ban problem recently. the federal organization will help paidpay for continued police patrols on trains traveling through bart's busiest station and upgraded security cameras at powell street, civic center and 16th street station. this comes after several high profile incidents at bart stations this summer, including the death of 18-year-old nia wilson at macarthur park. new developments tonight. a catholic bishop in the south bay is calling it an error in judgment after he went public that he was going to move into a $2.3 million home. san jose bishop patrick mcgrath released a statement, quote, i failed to consider adequately the housing crisis in the valley and the struggles of so many families and communities in light of that crisis. the diocese faced criticism following its decision to buy

layer when you see clouds marching all with a t way into the inland valleys. one of the reasons for the cooler than average pattern today and again tomorrow is we're under the influence of a trough instead of a ridge of high pressure. so when you have this area of low pressure to our north, it keeps us in an onshore flow mode, and it takes a while for the clouds to clear, and in some instances it doesn't clear as all which is why it's cooler than average. napa's high 80 degrees tomorrow, a good 10 degrees below normal for this time of year. but we'll inch closer to average as we head into friday. here is live look at the temperatures right now. temperatures are in the 50s and the 60s. now we'll take a look at a live picture from our san jose camera, and it is showing you some cloud cover with a light breeze there. widespread low clouds and patchy morning drizzle. afternoon highs still below average, but it is going to be nice for your holiday weekend. it is back to school time for albany unified. tomorrow morning, make sure the little one, especially if they go back to school tomorrow, are
